Hey Nat, are there any local artists you're a fan of lately? I like most of the music we talk about here but don't think I know a single artist from South Africa

I like Tyla a lot - you might recognize her stuff. You’d def recognize some of Black Coffee’s songs as well. I also like Bongeziwe Mabandla like he’s got a very distinct style. I like a lot of the local indie stuff like Shortstaw, Al Bairre, I think they split up but Shadowclub had some good songs. I like Alice Phoebe Lou and Thor Rixon as well. Those are more obscure. Moonchild Sanelly worked with Bey so you might recognize her voice also. Will Linley has a very catchy song call miss me when you’re gone. That’s like off the top of my head there are a loooot of South African artists I like.

     I do enjoy when people on different continents recommend quality music to me. That way, I can generate my normal half-assed commentary but with a greater sense of accomplishment for branching out of my normal range and delivering something fresh to my dear listener. So, indulge me, and dip your heels into content from another culture for a change. I should mention firstly that this band and track were recommended to me by unicornsglitterandcandyfloss, whose home is South Africa, and she’s been my mutual for an internet eternity on Tumblr. She’s a very talented illustrator and she’s expressed a few times that her and I have a similar but not all-the-same taste in music. I recently asked her to send me some of her favorite music from SA… and she responded in droves, listing off band names that were completely alien to me (Black Math, Fokofpolisiekar, Plush, etc.). The single act that most easily rose to the top of her list, to me, was Shadowclub. This is Good Morning Killer from 2011’s Guns and Money. If there’s one style of music that is criminally underrepresented on my blog, it’s blues music. I do prefer classic blues artists (B.B. King, Etta James, Robert Johnson, etc.) but in my advancing years I am getting used to hearing it mixed in with modern rock, and I can’t say I hate it when used effectively. That said, this trio executes bluesy punk-rock very well, and I found a good portion of their catalog to be downright raw and ballsy compared to your average corporately subsumed and tame American acts. I couldn’t find much of a history on this group surprisingly, I suppose because they’re relatively young and Africa is a 16-to-20-hour flight away. But according to some direct interviews with the band, the group were immature punks when they first started making music. They got drunk a lot; they were often physically fighting with other bands before or after live-shows and their professional attitude and discipline was practically non-existent! Around 2009 or so, they had a chance to retool some of their demo material into a serviceable product and get more mature about their place in the SA music industry. This resulted in a moody, intense, fun, brash and bluesy-punk noise which I can sum up in one word… REFRESHING! Them Dirty Shrikes Light Up “November” with Forlorn New Single

~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~

Doomy alt rock foursome THEM DIRTY SHRIKES have made quite an explosive entrance into the heavy music scene, hailing from Pretoria, South Africa, where they formed about four years ago. Steadily gaining a foothold in the heavy underground, the four-piece have taken the stage at local top-tier events like Oppikoppi, Misty Waters Music Festival, and the Durban International Blues Festival. They've also shared the stage with South-Africa's Hellcats, The Black Cat Bones, Shadowclub, Dan Patlansky, and (my favorite) Ruff Majik. So that will give you an idea right away of who you're dealing with.

Their name is interesting, as well, taken from a carnivorous Shrike bird that impales its prey on thorns and barbed wire fences before chowing down. They also let out a shriek like you wouldn't believe. It's a fitting "spirit animal" for the band, if they regarded it as such, though the warbles of Them Dirty Shrikes are anything but jarring to the ears. In fact, fans of blues-touched heavy psychedelia and jamming stoner rock will be immediately at home with their wounds."

Take the new single "November," for example (one of two the band plans on releasing in the months ahead, following their debut EP Heads or Tails in 2018).

"November," elaborates vocalist Soné Briel, is borne from a very dark time in her life. "This is one of the most personal songs we’ve released to date. When writing this song, I decided to be very frank about what it’s about -- drinking like a fish just to cope. It touches on how destructive coping mechanisms are often a cry for help." Certainly something many of us can relate to. She adds, “There’s a way to deal with the hand you’ve been dealt with, but losing yourself along the way is not it. It’s okay to feel. It’s okay to show emotion. There’s no need to put on a brave face just because you’re human.”
