Hi prequel community. If I said that I think the reason why there were only two prequels compared to the three that the other parts of the series got (3 TSY books and 3 TCY books) AND the reasons why Rhian's eye colour changes miraculously from Rise to Fall from green to blue (I think he's described as having green eyes in Rise? someone might have to correlate me on that) is because in Rise he's supposed to parallel TSY Sophie (green eyes, doubtfully good, multiple boyfriends) and then in Fall he's supposed to parallel Japeth (blue eyes, fratricidal, insane, gets cool one liners) how would you react to that
#the brackets make this unreadable im so sorry#but like you've got to hear me out on this right. right.#im cooking something I dont know what it is but its being cooked#the downsides ive spotted here is that I don't know if Rafal goes from TSY Agatha --> TCY Rhian that is a problem#but I might've just not spotted it#there's def some rhian sader in rafal cause of the whole ā€œidc if you're evil and I'm the One (true king) we can still rule togetherā€#and the whole Getting Murdered#I didn't pick up much of Agatha in him in Fall but the Sophie parallel was DEFINITELY there for Rhian#and ā€œthe Oneā€ being introduced as a parallel to ā€œthe One True Kingā€ makes way too much sense#this is also a convenient explanation for the wrong eye colours (though that also doesn't apply to Agatha. applies well to TCY twins though#is ā€œcool one linersā€ solely a japeth trait? no. did he get the best ones? absoLUTELY. ā€œwelcome to hell thenā€ okayyyyy go off#submitting this for peer review#there's so many little observations I have about prequels that I don't want to make full posts about#for example how the school masters' colours in the movie are the rise + fall ones#but whatever#sge#tsfgae#school for good and evil#the school for good and evil#fotsge#rotsge#sge prequels#japethposting#if anyone spots any more parallels that I missed pleaaaassseeee tell me I need to build a case file for this#rafal mistral#rhian mistral#oh also this was accidentally inspired by a wisteriaum post so thank you 4 that#MORE TAGS oh my god sorry I just remembered that Rhian gets described as serpentine/snakey a LOT in Fall that's def something

I recently watched the entirety of Good Omens (first two seasons at this point) in two days, and it's surrealā€”the quality of the writing is incredibleā€”all the subplots intermesh so well. Just, I'm awestruck by it. It's by far the best thing I've seen in a long time, and it beats out a lot by a landslide, as far as storytelling and wit goes.
Also, this song reminds me of the show, in a rather thematic way:

Finishing chapter 2 of my School for Good and Evil AU for House MD (Hilson driven). This is getting fun. I love the SGE setting, especially the School for Good. It's so fucking creepy (important: I'm using the book world, not the movie world, which is less explored and thus less creepy). I'm not a horror writer by any means, but it's fun diving into the really, really fucked up teachings of the School for Good. Specifically how Wilson, a character known for being selfless and subjugating his own needs for those of others, reacts to the demands being made of him. Also how his anxious, people-pleasing personality reacts to the sense that someone is always watching and judging him, trying to see if he can fit himself into a box he can't fit into.
I think a lot of the reason the horror and hypocrisy of the School for Good went unexplored in the main series is because the author wanted to make Clarissa Dovey (the dean of Good) a nice, warm mentor figure. She isn't. She systematically destroyed all gay students who couldn't fit into the closet for decades (this is confirmed in canon). She enforces conformity ruthlessly (also confirmed). Under her tenure, Good churned out people who would burn "wicked women" for no clear reason, punish any crime with death or dismemberment, and torture beaten foes (confirmed). And frankly I think it would be disrespectful to her not to properly display her evil (ironic) in my fic. Especially when it can be used to torment (and thus do some fun character exploration of) Wilson.
Dovey and her teachings on Good will make Wilson wonder if doing what others need him to do will strip him of literally every facet of his identity (his as-yet-undiscovered queerness, his morals, his autonomy, his literal human body). Whether he wants to do it. Whether he has any choice at all.
Tldr: While House is finally around people who understand him and having the time of his life over at Evil, Wilson is being systematically destroyed and driven mad by a person and ideology that literally calls itself Good. This fic is going to be fun times. Love putting blorbo in very new situations.

The thing I donā€™t like about the whole ā€œugh good always winsā€ complaint in the school for good and evil is that if evil did win, the readers would just call them good. History is written by the victors, and all that; itā€™s kind of what happened with the Schoolmaster

On the Subject of "All-Kinds-of-Fur:"
Link to the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale for reference. It's basically a variant of "Cinderella."
Also, if I have the inspiration for it, this could become part of a series, set during the peaceful days before the prequel events. Thus, if anyone would like to send in a request for the School Master brothers' reactions to a classic fairy tale or an SGE one, however obscure it may be, I might write it!
āø»
[Rhian enters the tower chamber looking distressed while Rafal is grading fourth-year students' theses on treachery, taboos, and the natural lines of family, that, when wrongly crossed, drive people insane and disrupt the fragile human psyche.
For an example of this so-called phenomenon (stolen from the plot of Hamlet), imagine a scenario as follows: a wife marries her husband's brother after her husband dies. While they may not be blood relations, this scenario is still off and rather strange, even if modern times could make more allowances for such a thing to occur and be socially-acceptable.]
Rhian: My fourth-year Class Captain had to run away whilst on her questing assignment!
Rafal: [absently, without looking up from the papers, slashing through lines in bloodred ink] Mm, shame. [He sips his tea.]
Rhian: [tries to smile but it looks uneasy and he begins to pace with anxiety.] No! It's... good... I suppose. [He cringes.] If she hadn't run into the Woods last night, she would've had to marry her father!
Rafal: [spits out his tea.] Who's her father? Not one of my graduates, surely. Even my curriculum standards rise above that, that rot.
Rhian: No, it's not one of yours. Simply some brazen king. I just... I wish I could do something. She was one of my best students. [He sighs dejectedly.] But I doubt the Pen will tolerate an intervention. We just have to let her tale play out.
Rafal: Well, is it worth working yourself up over? She got away. Maybe it's you who's too invested in your studentsā€™ lives. They can fend for themselves, you know... well, probably. Actually, some Evergirls can be dimwitted. [He pauses.] How about this?: you always have the option of throwing her a lovely funeral.
Rhian: Oh, forget it. I donā€™t expect you to understand. [He throws up his arms, flustered, and exits the room.]
[Rafal observes that his brother still looks rather sad. In fact, Rhian grows more worried with each passing day as the Storian writes of the poor girl's travails as a forlorn scullery maid in hiding.]
āø»
[Several months later, three days and three nights after each night of the ball and banquet in the Evergirl's fairy tale:]
Rhian: [elatedly, swelling with hope] Rafal! Rafal! Have you heard? My Class Captain might live to see her Happily Ever After! The young king is going to save her! Sheā€™s danced with him three nights in a row and he would take no other partner. Though, each night, she slips away and conceals herself in that hideous, asymmetrical coat. You've seen the Pen's illustrations, haven't you? And last night, she wore a dress that glistened like the stars! I just knew the Beautification Practice While Impoverished classroom simulations would pay off! I knew it! It's the sheer magic of what a little soap and water can achieve!
Rafal: [not listening to Rhian's enthusiastic raving] Uh-huh.
Rhian: [finally looks at Rafal more closely after his lackluster response.] Say, Rafal? Where did that patchwork blanket come from? Is it new? I feel like Iā€™ve seen it before. Somewhere... [he muses.]
Rafal: [shrugs without looking up from his book.] Nowhere. Youā€™re not stillā€¦ sad about that tale, are you? Itā€™s old news. And the Storian's been still about that tale for a good few hours. Maybe it'll be scrapped, storybook and all.
Rhian: [grits his teeth in frustration] Yes. I know. You weren't listening.
Rafal: [expressionlessly] Wasn't I? Regardless, Happily Ever Afters don't concern me.
Rhian: [tongue-tied, attempting to come up with a fitting retort] An-and, you need a good douse of soap and water too. You've got... soot andā€”is that walnut oil all over your hands?
Rafal: [rolls his eyes.]
āø»
[The next day:]
[Rhian devours the completed tale in one sitting and notices a discrepancy he assumes is a continuity error by the Storian: the vagabond princess disguised in the role of a scullery maid returned to her little cubbyhole below stairs to find that her coat, which sheā€™d left in the shadows, had disappeared, seemingly stolen.
Perhaps, a creature of the night had made off with it, desperate to reclaim its skin.
Or perhaps, there had been an intervention.
Thus, the princess was forced to show her true, shining self to the kingā€™s men hunting her down. In her gown, that gleamed like the stars, much like a bride's.
And Rhian has a feeling he knows why this Ending came to be.]
āø»
[A week later:]
Rhian: [enters, humming about wedding bells to himself.]
Rafal: You look well. Did something go right?
Rhian: Yes! Something nice came in the post today, brother. My former student and the young, foreign king have invited us to their wedding. And look! Even you got an invitation, too. [He laughs to himself and makes a face of mock fright, lowering his voice and gnarling his hands into claws.] Whooo, they probably didn't want the Evil brother to curse them during a christening someday, so you'll probably get a golden plate and sweetmeats to spare at the wedding feast in order to "appease" you.
Rafal: [glares at him.]
Rhian: [drops the act.] Ahem. Anyway, weā€™ve got to pack for spring in Altazarra. Bring some non-black, festive clothes, if you have any. Oh, and bring a less ugly coat than that scruffy old blanket, will you?
Rafal: Iā€™m not attending. I donā€™t like inane balls or sentimental Ever Afters, but have fun.
Rhian: Are you sure about that?
Rafal: Positively.
Rhian: [holds up an illustration of the princess' cubbyhole from the tale heā€™s been scrutinizing for the last few days.] Then whatā€™s this shadow the Storianā€™s inked in darker than the rest? It looks quite a lot like a human form.
Rafal: Trick of the light. Just be glad Evil didnā€™t prevail this time, and call it a day. My side will win next time to be sure.
Rhian: [smirks knowingly] I guess I owe my peace of mind and sanity to a thief then.
Rafal: [deadpans] Run along, Ever. Pip-pip. You've got a wedding to attend, have you not?

first year vs fourth year
aka im back in sge mode heyyyyy šŸ˜ just doodling some (mostly soon to be featured) characters from my prequel / young callis+arthur series (i know its kind of old BUT. i AM working on the next installment which is probably going end up 3x as long šŸ’€ stay tuned for wip posting. and callis posting šŸ„°)
ummm random ideas / explanations under the cut:
gareth and gaheris are arthur's cousins (gaheris is 15 (1 year older than arthur), gareth is 12) and both in his class. they generally dislike arthur for various reasons but mostly because they think he's cursed + stole the crown from his brother
callis is gareth's best friend. he is Not hers. he might also be in love with her but that is a tale for another time. you'll see
george (or grog) and alek are callis's roommates (alek is barely 16, george is turning 12). they both got into evil technically by nepotism. you'll see
it will be Ages before i can properly explain why lesso's name is completely different in this series so ill just say it here. its quite silly actually but its been this way for Years and Years so "leonora" is actually a portmanteau name of her first nickname (nora) and a second nickname (leo). the road to nickname 2 will be a long one paved with the power of friendship and not dying in the trial by tale etc etc. you'll see
emma is a surprise tool we will use later or something. she's not relevant after first year or so but im doing my own spin on her not being asked to the snow ball but somehow not being failed. what i'll say now is that callis and gareth are involved. you'll see
uhhh and if you're reading this have a snippet

Introā€¦
About: Iā€™ve been a fan of The School for Good and Evil (SGE) since around 2018. I literally love the fandom with all of my soul, and cant go a single day without thinking about it. Out of all the fandoms that Iā€™m in, itā€™s my definitely my favorite.
Iā€™ve been on Tumbler for a year or two now, and scrolling on here has become one of the things I look forward to most, haha.
While this is an SGE focused blog, it will delve mainly into the prequel series. (Rise of The School for Good and Evil and Fall of the School for Good and Evil). I think the prequels have so many easter eggs and details, I also think some characters in the prequels were little explored. But to be honest, Rafal and Rhian are kind of the whole reason. I love their dynamic and relationship so much. Iā€™ve fangirled over Rafal since book 3. So you can imagine how estatic I was when the Soman announced the prequels.
Ever or Never: Honestly? I take both qualities, but I seem to be more of an Ever.
Iā€™ve had an SGE blog in my head for a while now, but never took the chance to do it. Instead, Iā€™ve just been looking at other peopleā€™s blogs and commented here and there. Thanks to those bloggers I now have the inspiration to do this myself. Ib: @liketwoswansinbalance @rosellemoon and @maraneedscoffee. Iā€™m sure thereā€™s more so please let me know if I missed you!
So incredibly excited to join the SGE community here on Tumblr!

thereā€™s a lot of emphasis on eye color in sge. I may be the only one to have noticed it but since I finished the prequels itā€™s been something I think about a lot
Rhianā€™s eyes are blue and Rafalā€™s eyes are green. In the main series, green typically represents Evil (in book 3, there was a lot of emphasis on green lighting in the castles), and Sophieā€™s emerald eyes are a key characteristic of hers. Tedrosā€™s eyes are blue, representing Good (the boyā€™s towers in the Good castle are blue).
Green means Evil and blue means Good. But there are moments where Rafal and Sophie do something Good or something in the name of Good, even if some people consider it Evil (using black magic to save their closest friends, taking the Storian to the heart for someone they love). There are times where Rhian and Tedros did something Evil, or something they thought was Good but wasnā€™t (declaring war on Evil, hating others, stealing power [mostly concerning the Storian]).
brown I feel represents somewhere in the middle, like theyā€™ve meddled in both sides. Agatha knows tons of dark/Never spells because of her time helping Sophie with her studies in their first year, and Fala (Rafal in disguise) used the Circus of Talents to expose his brotherā€™s plot to cheat. He even declared himself ā€œFala of Goodā€ as his nationality. They have each been both the victim and the aggressor, usually in the name of love for someone they care about.
in general thereā€™s TONS of emphasis on appearance in this series, especially eye colors. Being ugly is an Evil trait and being beautiful is a Good trait, but throughout the whole series ā€” including the prequels ā€” the characters have flipped things around, and itā€™s awesome, itā€™s one of the several things I seriously love about this series

So I said iā€™m a comment on a post I would share my Rafal playlist with you all and I want to preface this by saying some of these songs are based off my own interpretations of his character or personal headcanons.
Tagging the sge prequel fans bc obvi
@liketwoswansinbalance @thescarlettshrimpernel @harmonyverendez @discjude @rosellemoon
The songs with reasons are all below the cut!
MAJOR SPOILERS!!!
Look What You Made Me Do - Taylor Swift
- Do i need to explain?
Mastermind - Taylor Swift
- ā€œNo one wanted to play with me as a little kid
So I've been scheming like a criminal ever since
To make them love me and make it seem effortless
This is the first time I've felt the need to confess
And I swear
I'm only cryptic and Machiavellian 'cause I careā€
THATS THE MOST RAFAL THING EVER
Also the last line, reminds me of the scene where heā€™s talking to the students and getting them to hell him fight against Rhian he says something like ā€œif iā€™ve gone to far it was to protect everyoneā€
Sign of the Times - Harry Styles
- Idk reminds me of his death
- And ā€œwe never learn weā€™ve been here beforeā€ makes me think of the fact he got stabbed by the Storian in Rise and Fall and the symbolism it holds.
Mercy - Shawn Mendes
- ā€œIā€™m prepared to sacrifice my lifeā€ is when he jumped in front of Rhian in Rise
Bad Habit - Steve Lacy
- ā€œI wish I knew you wanted meā€
Idk itā€™s giving James X Rafal yk
People I Donā€™t Like
- Fits his personality lmao
Murders - Miracle Musicsl
- ā€œAll for nothing at allā€ IS HIM DYING IN FALL LIKE ā€œoh i did all that for rhian and got nothing in returnā€
Gilded Lily - Cults
- Same as above ā€œHavenā€™t I given enough?ā€
- Also, ā€œAlways the fool with the strongest heartā€
Christmas Kids - Roar
ā€œYouā€™ll change your, and change your mind, and leave this fucked up place behind, but Iā€™ll know Iā€™ll know.ā€ Rhian killing and taking his identity and Rafal being the only who knows :(((
Heather - Conan Gray
- Another James X Rafal one but ā€œBut you like her better, I wish I was Heather,ā€ BUT MAKE IT KYMA BECAUSE APPARENTLY JAMES AND KYMA ARE A THING? (Where did Soman find that one? Up his ass?)
Another Love - Tom Odell
- Him not being able to show sympathy for anyone else really because heā€™s wasted all his time and energy on Rhian
If I Killed Someone for You - Alec Benjamin
- Since Rafal had changed who he was for Rhian to be good I thought this was fitting since the point of the song is ā€œI killed a part of myself for you, am I enough now?ā€
Many more Taylor Swift songs but I didnā€™t want my playlist to be a ton of Taylor Swift. I canā€™t think of some off the top of my head right now.

Which SGE book is your favourite?
Also who is your favourite character?
I have to say Rise / Fall of the school for good and evil. Is amazing to see the prequel book and how It shaped the future/ current timeline of the school for good and evil series.
Now my favorite character is Rafal and Rhian Mistral.
I'll be lying if I said Rhian wasn't my favorite šŸ˜šŸ˜˜
He's such a babe.
Who's your favorite character? And which SGE book is your favorite?.
And thank you for the ask.

Rafal would dress like a vampire and act grumpy to everyone but deep down you know this guy has a heart of dark chocolate: Bitter but also really sweet
I feel like thatā€™s one of the only sweets heā€™ll really like, Rafalā€™s not fond of sweets, his brother Rhian would be more into sweet things like milk chocolate and caramels. Fala isnā€™t really into sweets and candy, though he might have dessert on special occasions.
