SGA × Long Dark — rus & en ↓
Tumblr media
Local doctor Carson, in addition to real medicines, likes to make simple teas from rosehip berries and local mushrooms, and natural moss bandages. And also teaches staff to distinguish mushrooms in the wild. For this, he received the harmless nickname "Voodoo" from Rodney McKay. >> I created these images in Recraft Ai. I used the official Long Dark arts to create them. I don't get any commercial benefit from it. I don't have rights to Long Dark. All rights reserved by Hinterland.

SGA Summer Vacation Recs
Tumblr media
So, a few weeks ago, a friend asked for longfic recommendations to read while on vacation, and I did not really realize how many I was recommending at the time. Seemed like a good idea to make a post about it.
Time in a Bottle by astolat, 14K (not originally on my list because it was too short, but it's too perfect for a summer reading list, so I added it), McShep, Rated E, Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings To see a World in a Grain of Sand / And a Heaven in a Wild Flower / Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand / And Eternity in an hour.
The Long Dark (series) by @logicgunn, 141K, McShep, Rated G-E but the first is M, Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings An astronomical event causes two strangers to crash land on a remote island in the frozen Canadian north. Cue a fluffy slow burn in a survival setting.
Lord John Sheppard Versus Earth by LitGal, 61K, McShep, Rated M, Graphic Depictions of Violence Canon diverged before Jackson found Atlantis. The IOC stepped in and decided to make things more efficient. A gene testing program brought Major John Sheppard into the program earlier, but budget constraints and international treaties have kept Dr. Jackson out of the antarctic. So now John has to find his own team--and his own geek--or he's in danger of being stuck in the mountain forever as a light switch. However, as the universe changes, fate forces some things to return to proper form, and other things… they get wildly out of control. John isn't sure how he came to be Earth's enemy, but he's going to have to deal with the cards he's dealt.
Teamwork by onthewaters, 24K, McShep and others, Rated E, Graphic Depictions of Violence There is an Earth where things have turned out a little differently, and the people who go to Atlantis aren't quite the ones we know. AKA The one where Rodney is a Mountie.
The Doctor and the Sheppard by @hero-in-waiting, 70K, McShep, Rated E They've been in Pegasus for a year before Rodney is finally allowed to go off-world to meet with the mysterious leader of a group of allies against the wraith. The first meeting goes well, sending them down a path none of them could've foreseen, and leaving Rodney with thoughts of the mysterious leader with his bright eyes and dark hair.
The Hard Prayer by Rheanna, 30K, McShep, Rated M One year after the end of the world, John meets another survivor.
In Sickness and in Health by @a-storm-of-roses, 31K, McShep, Rated E "So I told a little lie, just to get you back to Atlantis. It was the only way, so try not to get too mad. I told them we were married.” When John suffers a major, life-changing injury on Earth, Rodney must pretend to be his husband to ensure his return to Atlantis. As he struggles to navigate recovery and accept his new reality, John must also come to terms with his new role as Rodney's husband and the new dynamics in their relationship. A story of healing, recovery, loss, love, and acceptance.
Enigma by sgamadison, McShep, 32K, McShep, Rated E, Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings During an off-world mission, a piece of Ancient technology transports Rodney and John on a one-way trip to a deserted airfield. Working together to get back, it takes a vivid dream to make Rodney realize what's been in front of him all along.
Bridges by bussaiko, 52K, McShep, Rated E Engineer Rodney McKay went to North Carolina's Crystal Coast to help his sister design a series of bridges. He hoped to rebuild his career following a professional disaster; he didn't expect to be drawn into the small community of Athos Island, where he found friendship and perhaps something more with helicopter pilot John Sheppard. But when Rodney tries to learn more about John's past, what he discovers might tear them apart. (non-Stargate AU)
Apocalypse Rising by sian1359, 81K, McShep, Rated M, Graphic Depictions of Violence The Goa'uld are not the only ones who covet Earth.
Zen and the Art of Jumper Maintenance by Indybaggins, 39K, McShep, Rated M The one where Rodney gets sucked in and John… follows. Featuring a quirky John, Rodney in orange robes, crazy Ancient-worship, sheep milking and jumpers that aren't broken but need to be fixed anyway.
Black Helicopters (series) by whizzy, 141K, McShep, Rated T-E but the first is M, Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Screw the bet. Rodney was going to prove the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence. Oh, and incidentally, he might just catch the United States Air Force with their pants around their ankles.
Pegasus Purgatorio by MrsHamill, 127K, McShep, Rated E, Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings It is difficult to write a paradise when all the superficial indications are that you ought to write an apocalypse. It is obviously much easier to find inhabitants for an inferno or even a purgatorio. (Ezra Pound) Yeah, I'd say that about covers it, Ezra. John and Rodney are left behind when Atlantis (and, by extension, Pegasus) is evacuated. While returning to the Milky Way, they decide to bring a few friends along.
What A Wonderful Bunker You Would Make by ocdindeed, 50K, McShep, Rated M Summary in simple words: Rodney is recluse and John has a kid. Summary in not so simple words: Rodney McKay has given up on the world, living a simple life up on a mountain devoid of people. He likes it that way, at least he did until a kid with a full head of dark hair ambled up his dirt driveway and changed his sequestered life forever. (AU - Set during SG1 & Pre-SGA timeline.)
G******, Tramps, and Thieves* (series) by auburn, 372K, McShep and a whole lot more, Rated T-M, Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Rape/Non-Con, later fics Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Vala Mal Doran and her partners, renegades Jehan abd-Ba'al and Meredith McKay, hijack the Tau'ri ship Prometheus and leave the Milky Way behind in search of the Lost City of the Ancients, Atlantis.

Atlantis Expedition: Science Division Departments
"Many of the scientists on Atlantis are organised into departments, each with their own department head. Dr. Rodney McKay was head of the Science and Research Division which most likely meant he was in charge of all of the science departments. Dr. Radek Zelenka was also the head of his own department. The various science departments on Atlantis are:
> Physics
 » Astrophysics
> Biology
 » Microbiology
 » Astrobiology
> Oceanography
> Botany
> Medicine
> Anthropology
(SGA: "Remnants", "Grace Under Pressure", "Suspicion")"
From <https://stargate.fandom.com/wiki/Atlantis_expedition#Departments>
---
As I'm working my way through worldbuilding headcanons on the expedition, I figured I ought to start with the science division first. Above is my starting point: the canonical information at hand, to flesh out and give it some real-world reliability.
When I looked at it again, I realized it was, to put it politely, ill-thought-out crap that was only looked upon when the writers needed some random scientist around for episode material.
So, what considerations would an expedition like this actually need to take into account when hiring people?
At the very bare bones of it is "how many people can I fit through a wormhole in twenty or twenty-five minutes, plus supplies?". I went back and forth, prevaricated for a bit, and settled on 200 people if you really want to hoof it.
(Why 20-25 minutes? It's SGC's first stable-ish wormhole to another galaxy that's powered by a ZPM. They don't even know how much of a success that would be, or if they're just shoving people into a glorified shredder. Gotta pick and choose who you're maybe putting through the billion-dollar shredder. Y'know. Just in case.)
My initial rough estimations were about an even split between scientific and military personnel, which I kept on hand as napkin math to sanity check myself. This would be approximately 150 scientists.
What departments would there be, and how would it be divided? Who makes the priorities, and why?
The canon data is a mess, and as I worked through things, canon kept getting folded and refolded into different configurations because there's two competing priorities: the IOA/SGC, and Rodney's approach to pragmatism.
What was everyone expecting to see on the other side of that wormhole? Definitely not a city ship sunk into the ground of an ocean, and definitely not isolated from others (the Athosians were an unexpected godsend that kicked off the reason to have a plot in the first place). Whatever the IOA or SGC had in mind will quickly get thrown out the window, but needs must, and the departments were likely arranged long before the shipping manifest was decided.
I poked around the uniforms, because everyone is colour-coded, and there's five sections:
> Red (civilian, leader) - Worn by Dr. Elizabeth Weir, Teyla Emmagan, Colonel Samantha Carter and Richard Woolsey.
> Blue/dark blue or purple (scientist) - Worn by Dr. Meredith Rodney McKay and Dr. Radek Zelenka.
> Yellow (medical) - Worn by Dr. Carson Beckett and Dr. Jennifer Keller.
> Black (military) - Worn by Lt. Colonel John Sheppard and Major Evan Lorne.
> Green (technician) - Worn by Chuck and Amelia Banks.
This information is listed in both the "List of Atlantis personnel" and "Atlantis expedition uniform" pages on SGCommand.
Thus far that gets me two and a half departments in my hand: Scientist, Medical, and Technician (that's the half).
What would the SGC and IOA want the expedition to prioritize? Technology, and lots of it. This means that, probably, there's going to be more engineers than you can shake a stick at, and not a lot of pure sciences. Remember, it cost money to fire up the gate, and flinging people into another galaxy is an unfathomable amount of (international, at this point) taxpayer funds. You're going to want as much applied science as possible, and as much overlap in disciplines as possible.
(Unfortunately this does leave little room for error, so anyone that dies is capable of leaving a hole in potential research.)
Therefore, how would a top-down order of technological research look like? My assumption was this:
> Engineering of the city of Atlantis itself
» ZPMs, auxiliary and/or complementary power sources
 » Materials and material manufacturing
» Design specs of different technologies (jumpers, yes, but also anti-grav, shields, climate controls)
> Biological sciences
 » ATA gene therapies
» Whatever the Ancients were working on regarding ascension
⇛ Helpful with the Ori once Atlantis is informed of that issue
To wit, neither addendum on the biological sciences bullet point is pertinent at the time of department formation, as Carson invented the ATA gene therapy after arriving in Atlantis, and the Ori weren't an issue for a similar reason.
Ergo, all non-biological engineering fields would have had higher billing, and thus more of them hired. The only exception would be medical, and I'm sure the SGC had the forethought to bully the IOA into its relevancy and make sure that department was as fully-stocked as they could manage.
Now what about practical considerations? Plans are nice and all, but rarely survive contact with reality, so some adjustment might be needed. This, I believe, the SGC considered, given their own history of needing to rapidly adjust on the fly.
Rodney, as Chief Science Officer (CSO), would be the one to not only make these kinds of decisions, but also to listen to the head of the expedition as to what needed to be prioritized. As the show has demonstrated, there can be a significant amount of shuffling around of employees based on the needs of a minute, and hour, a week, a month - for an indefinite amount of time? Basics are what gets the job done.
So what things would Rodney need to consider, or be directed to consider by Elizabeth?
> Oh shit this can sink
» Rodney's main work - keeping the ZPM working and get as many new ones as possible
> Oh shit everything's so far away
» Rodney's other main work - making sure the gate works as ordered
> Oh shit we're in another galaxy
 » Food
⇛ Getting, keeping, preserving, maybe the occasional growing
 » Utilities
⇛ Luckily they don't have to pay for it lol
⇛ But also oh shit lighting, water, sewage, air filtration, general life support
   ⟹ Rodney's third main work
   ⟹ This poor guy
 » Medicine
⇛ Rodney delegates the hell out of this
⇛ Good luck making potions, guys!
 » Bullets
⇛ Also other things the military needs
⇛ Fun times re-inventing the wheel I mean gunpowder
⇛ Good work for bored soldiers, and possibly also any scientist Rodney puts in time-out
 » Clothes
  ⇛ Ha, thread
  ⇛ Also needles
⇛ Experiments in sewing machine making
   ⟹ Watch the fingers
  ⇛ How to replace fabric?
  ⇛ Off-duty clothes
⇛ Also medical clothing (scrubs for staff, patients)
 » Miscellaneous
  ⇛ Entertainment, I guess
Internal monologue included because I think it's funny.
Anyway.
While Rodney's spending his days with Benny Hill music playing in the background trying to get all of those priorities done on top of actually delegating work and doing whatever else Elizabeth (and John) want him to do, other people actually need to have some work to get done. So what are they doing?
It depends on who already does what, frankly. So in the above combined interests (amount of people that can fit through an intergalactic wormhole, competing IOA/SGC interests, realities of living in Atlantis), I'm proposing this set-up (commentary included):
Medical Sciences Department
Head: Carson Beckett (later, Jennifer Keller, later, whomever)
Contains: Surgery, psychiatry, physical therapy
Function: Maintaining health of expedition members
Examples of function: surgeries, medical prescriptions, recuperation from injuries, mental stability
Personnel quantity: 1 (Head) + 10 (surgical team) + 5 (nurses) + 1 (psych) + 1 (phys. therapy) + 1 (anesthesiologist) = 19 total
A/N: Nurses have training in medications and physical therapy, surgical team also doubles as general practitioners.
Life Sciences Department
Head: OC
Contains: Earth biologists, bio- & biochemical engineers, astro/xeno-biologists, botany, environmental chemistry, zoology, microbiology
Function: Auxiliary to Medical Department needs
Examples of function: pharmaceutical synthesis, analysis of unknown species, biological database creation, gene therapies (pharmaceutical adjacent)
Personnel quantity: 1 (Head) + 2 (Earth biologists) + 2 (bioE & biochemE) + 1 (astro/xenobio) + 1 (botany) + 1 (envchem) + 1 (zoo) + 2 (microbio) = 11
A/N: Both biologists also have training/specialization in genetics/gene mapping (assists both Carson and Katie), some input in requesting gate missions based on in-house needs.
Field Sciences Department
Head: OC
Contains: Linguistics, historical geography, cartography, ethnography, sociology, oceanography, hydrology, atmospheric physics, planetary physics
Function: Research pool for gate teams and any assigned missions
Examples of function: Preservation of refugee cultures, scouting for trade planets, analysis of back-up sites for establishment
Personnel quantity: 1 (Head) + 3 (linguistics) + 1 (histgeo) + 1 (cart) + 1 (ethno) + 1 (socio) + 1 (oceano) + 1 (hydro) + 1 (atmophys) + 1 (planphys) = 12
A/N: SGC duplicate all shoved into one department, mostly ignored in-house but their brains are picked for background dossiers when it comes to mission planning. Linguists trained in xenolinguistics, from the SGC, can cover the various anthro fields if necessary, also various training in structural linguistics. Main scientist pulls for gate team assignments, if something critical isn't needed (i.e. Ancient technology).
Applied Sciences Department
Head: Rodney McKay (or perhaps Radek Zelenka?)
Contains: Electrical/technical engineering, nuclear physics, civil engineering, astrophysics, laser/optical, chemical engineering
Function: Study, synthesis, and adaptations of Ancient technology
Examples of function: ZPM analysis with intent to duplicate, experimental duplications of Ancient technology materials, study of gate physics and construction with intent to duplicate, study and experimental duplication of other Ancient technologies (i.e. hyperdrives, cloaks, weapons, etc)
Personnel quantity: 1 (Head) + 3 (electreng) + 6 (techeng/gate techs) + 1 (nucphys) + 1 (astrophy) + 1 (LZ/opt) +  3 (chemeng) = 16
A/N: The people Rodney are yelling at most often, because mistakes mean kablooey. Also a lot of the people running around in an emergency. 1 nuclear physicist because Rodney pulls a lot of intellectual weight, and same with the astrophysicist and laser/optical person (mostly they're there as on-paper hires and back-ups/assistants for him for his own research).
Gate Technicians
Head: ??? Joint custody
Contains: Gate technicians
Functions: Auxiliary to Applied Sciences Department, interacts with the gate and the gate only
Examples of function: dialing, searching database for addresses, maintaining mission logs and planets visited, basic repair and maintenance of the gate, technical drawings as required by others
Personnel quantity: Chuck, idk +5 for full shift overlaps = 6 total (listed in Applied Sciences department as techeng/gate techs)
A/N: Technically nerds but are active duty, probably loans from SGC (maybe also Russia because of the DHD debacle?).
Gate technicians are, although folded into the Applied Sciences department, listed separately in order to better articulate their duties (and the fact that they get the green shirts). Shout-out to @spurious for enabling the idea that gate techs would do technical drawings 😁
Sum Total of Science Division Personnel
Medical: 19
Life Sciences: 11
Field Sciences: 12
Applied Sciences: 16
Total total: 19 + 11 + 12 + 16 = 58
This isn't anywhere close to my initial estimate of 150, but I think it adequately covers all the preconceived and actual responsibilities that the science division would need to handle in the expedition. Possibly I might update these numbers as I develop this headcanon further, but that would end up in a new post.
Further elaboration on headcanons about each department will be in their own posts, with links updated here as they're posted for ease of reference.

I’ve finally finished the incredible show that is Stargate Atlantis and I. Have. Thoughts.
Tumblr media
I watched Vegas and Enemy at the Gates together (on the advice of my sga leader @lightthewaybackhome) and I’m so happy I did.
So Vegas feels like a different show entirely, from the filming to the characters. Sheppard does not seem like Sheppard nor does anyone else. They’re all darker, more broken versions. My heart was just broken the whole time, but I didn’t cry until I saw Rodney though. This is the Rodney without his Sheppard to guide him and help him. This is the Rodney who lets Keller pass him by. This is the Rodney that lets Sheppard go alone. This is Rodney without a Sheppard that lit up Atlantis (this is honestly worse than last man but it’s a good parallel).
Tumblr media
This is the Sheppard that goes alone on yet another suicide mission because he’s lost everything anyway…and then he dies. While Johnny Cash’s “Solitary Man” plays. Because that’s who Sheppard is, not the man in black saving the world with his people, but the solitary man who is alone without a home and no chance to be healed. And yet still he sacrifices himself and is brave and dies saving the world. Sheppard becomes the action hero at the end of the movie that goes out guns blazing and, while it’s usually cool to see, this one just breaks our hearts.
And then we move to the finale and…oh! Sheppard is Sheppard again, and Rodney is Rodney and everyone is okay.
Tumblr media
And we see the parallels between the Vegas world and ours throughout the episode. Sheppard about to go on a suicide mission stops right at the last moment because Rodney’s voice breaks through the radio. The team is about to die blowing up the hive ship but stops because Atlantis is there in time to save them. Atlantis is lit up because of Sheppard. And then we see them all at the end. They’re happy, and alive and not broken.
And even though they aren’t fully healed, cause who ever is in this life, they’re on the path to healing. There’s hope, there’s light that has broken through the darkness (the way the show ends with the light piercing through the clouds is so beautiful in a literal and metaphorical sense like I’m sobbing).
There’s a couple lines from songs that my Sheppard told me about that is forever linked with SGA now. Ghosts That We Knew has a beautiful line, “So give me hope in the darkness that I will see the light”. Throughout the show there’s so much darkness and pain, but we stick through it with the team because there’s hope that it’ll be okay. There’s hope because John is there, because they’re all there right where they should be. It’s a beautiful metaphor for life.
And then there’s a song called Hospital for Souls. It’s mainly a Sheppard song, as he lets himself burn for his family, but it’s also how Atlantis is a hospital for all the broken souls and brings them together. It’s why Sam didn’t stay there long and Woolsey came on board. It’s why Ronon says at the end that he is home. It’s why Teyla chooses to stay and raise her son in Atlantis instead of her home world. Why Rodney waits 48000 years for Sheppard and why Sheppard realizes finally that he doesn’t have to die to be redeemed, that living and healing is possible for even him.
Tumblr media
It’s been a wonderful journey watching this show, it’s changed me, helped me grow and made me realize that healing is possible for even me. That a family is what you make it and they can be your hospital for your soul no matter how weary, broken or hurt.
I just love this show. I’m immediately gonna start rewatching it from the beginning because this. This is my family, my home. I’ve found myself in the darkness of Sheppard and the outlierness of Rodney. In the fierce love of Ronon and sisterly bond of Teyla.
I’m ever so grateful my friend got me to watch this, so happy that I went through the darkness into the light with my team, through tears and shouts of joy. I always said Supernatural would be the only show with this kind of life-changing, life-saving impact. But Stargate Atlantis now holds that honor too, this little, cheesy, ridiculously funny and terribly sad series has changed my life, helped me be the person I wanted to be for so many years but always struggled with (yeah I’m louder, complain more and am maybe a bit more annoying but gosh it’s more fun) and just generally helped me with so many endless things. And I’ve found some great friends and got closer to one of my best friends, aka my Sheppard lol.
Anyway, all this to say that this show is beautiful and incredible and please do yourself the honor of watching it but definitely bring tissues. Don’t worry too much about why they wear sneakers for like two seasons or their military tactics are off, but just enjoy the friendship, the humor, and how wonderful it shows that it doesn’t matter how messed up you are. How dark you’ve gotten or how many pieces of your soul you’ve sacrificed for others. You can be redeemed and healed and made whole. You can find people who love you despite your flaws and shortcomings. And you can find the light no matter how dark the world has become. You too can be home.

Wraith vs Goa'uld
Ok so these are basically the 2 biggest enemies in Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis. We've seen both of these enemies go up against the replicators and honestly they get their asses handed to them REPEATEDLY. I mean the only way the Wraith survived them was by turning off the directive sending them at them. We already know who'd win there, but I'm curious about who'd win between the Wraith and the Goa'uld. This is what I've theorized while being in season 1 of SGA rewatch (Edit: I finished it now, wrote this a while ago) and like a year since my last SG-1 rewatch so if I forget stuff, that's why.
Firepower:
The Goa'uld have it here I think. I mean, they've got staff weapons which kill vs the stun guns wraith have. Wraith ships are organic and quite sensitive when it comes to traveling fast due to the risk of ripping the hull in two. Even the zat gun, their version of a stun gun, can still kill, not to mention their personal shields (not that that'd stop a wraith from feeding on them, but from the blasts yes). The Wraith are too focused on preserving the life of their victims in order to feed to win this potion in my opinion.
Numbers:
This is a hard one to me to be honest. The Goa'uld have the Jaffa with them (if we're talking about their prime at least), and the Goa'uld themselves, both of which have long life spans and healing capabilities. Neither of these come even close to the Wraiths abilities though (those mf basically have to be nuked in order to die if they've eaten recently). I honestly think the Wraith might have the numbers on this though given the sheer scale we see in SGA, plus they're harder to kill.
Battle tactics:
The Goa'uld really take a hit here honestly. Both species are incredibly cocky but the Wraith are smart. The Goa'uld genuinely believe they're gods who could never be defeated and that's what gets them wiped out in the end. The Wraith's confidence comes from their victories, from the fact that they beat the ancient's asses so hard the few survivors ran to another galaxy to get away from them. They're powerful, smart, hard to kill, and they know they have the numbers on any other thing in the pegasus galaxy who could rival them technologically. Strategically, they whoop the Goa'uld.
Technology:
The wraith 1000%. The Goa'uld have tech, yeah, but they stole like all of it. The wraith did it all, were they inspired by the ancients? Probably, but they made their shit. They grew ships for fucks sake! They figured out ancient tech, they could figure out any tech you could possibly throw at them and we see that repeatedly. They do not fuck around, Goa'uld don't have scientists, not on their level anyway. I mean, do you see the Goa'uld hacking the replicators? No, those dudes just died in the face of them.
Conclusion:
Honestly I think the Goa'uld would shit themselves in the face of the Wraith. The Goa'uld need to be feared to stay in power but the Wraith are fear. They are the thing in the dark. They might not have the fire power the snake dudes have but I'm confident they would whoop them. I do wonder what tf would happen if a Goa'uld got a Wraith as a host. THAT is horrifying to think about, I mean, it would not be wrong in having the cockiness they do at that point tbh.
Anyway, I'd love to hear your thought on the matter, agreeing or disagreeing!

Your McShep fics are giving me life. I'm CRAVING McShep content recently - its so hard to discover a love for old fandoms that are now less active! Please send me all the great other McShep fics you stumble across, I've burned my way through your whole library
Oh my goodness!!!! This ask plus the one from a few weeks ago are really telling me I need to get back to doing fic rec posts regularly!!!!!
First of all thank you so much for your kind words about my fic 💖💖💖💖 honestly for me SGA fandom feels soooo active, even though I know it was an actual juggernaut back in the day lmao. BUT that means that there’s a MASSIVE backlog of stuff to read!!!! Just insane amounts of staggeringly good fics!!!!
And second of all you can check all my previous rec posts here: the tag is sometimes ficlets I’ve reblogged but also lots of links and lists in there!!
ANYWAY. Let me see if I can rustle up some new recs for you my friend! I have a couple of unposted recs in my notes so we’ll pop those in first:
Five People Who Know by hestia_lacey | ~4k, rated E
Five people who know exactly how John Sheppard feels about Rodney McKay.
Only read this if you’re prepared to have your heart stomped on, but ahhhhhhhh. The first part, with Jeannie, is definitely my favorite.
Wishes on a Wheel by waterfalliam | ~3.2k, rated T
The sun is gentle, faintly wrong against his skin. The wind whispers against his arms and neck that he’s alive and that counts for something, he’s never wholly alone, he still has himself—but it’s nothing like the sea breeze that feels like home.
Absolutely beautifully sad introspective Epiphany!John piece, dealing with his depression and feelings of abandonment, with a sweet ending 💖
Solitary by @esteefee | ~5k, rated M
Four days in solitary gives a guy time to think. Unless he's an idiot.
Aggggh the John voice in this is immaculate (as is to be expected from esteefee ofc). Sardonically funny with a soft and chewy emotional core that just...takes a little time and a little chipping away at to get to. But, you know, worth it.
Followed by two faves from this year’s sga secret santa, both of them variations on the theme of John and Rodney making up:
In the Dark of the Night by @hero-in-waiting | ~5.8k, rated M
The problem with arguments is that they never happen at a good time. Which is a to be expected given their nature. And the problem with trying to make up is, at least in the Pegasus galaxy, they come at an even worst time. Especially when John and Rodney get stuck off world, running from some locals who took a dislike to them immediately and five days after an argument that, in John's opinion, had started over nothing.
But at least they were together?
Love the concept of this one, love them being forced into life or death situations before being able to talk about their feelings, looooove the misunderstanding on Rodney’s part 🥰🥹
When I Think of All the Worries That People Seem to Find by @audioletter | ~2.3k, rated G
After ten years of being together, John acts like John and Rodney acts like Rodney.
Absolutely cried reading this I love it so much. The depth of knowledge that they have for each other after so long is so apparent in the best, most beautiful way.
Aaaand let’s round it out with a nice long one:
Inukshuk by murron | ~80k, rated M
A mission-gone-south isolates Rodney and John from the rest of the team. Forced to search for an Ancient outpost, they struggle to keep each other alive until the time their kidnappers prepare to sacrifice the one and purify the other.
This is absolutely a mcshep fic but I almost found that taking a backseat for me in my enjoyment of the way that the plot unfolds, the way that it’s written? Absolutely spellbinding work, I struggled to put it down.

[fic] [sga | mckay/sheppard] we're still here
Summary: "We're here. That's our status." ----- “‘So long, Rodney,’” comes McKay’s slurred mimicry of what Sheppard’s last words to him could have been. His attempt at a baleful glare is dimmed by obvious sleep deprivation. “Asshole.”
ao3
He doesn’t bother knocking. He does lock the door behind him, though.
Rodney is face-down on his bed, hand still half on his tablet screen. His eyes are hazy, and he had clearly been in the middle of something when his brain gave up on him. Sheppard tosses the turkey sandwich onto his back, causing him to jolt into something resembling wakefulness.
“‘So long, Rodney,’” comes McKay’s slurred mimicry of what Sheppard’s last words to him could have been. His attempt at a baleful glare is dimmed by obvious sleep deprivation. “Asshole.”
Sheppard leans against the wall next to the bed while McKay sits up to wipe the drool from his mouth and nibble with uncharacteristic daintiness at his food. It’s the most standard-sized sandwich they have.
“I didn’t exactly have time to recite a sonnet before flying off to my death.”
He stands there, watching McKay slowly chew the corner of his sandwich until he decides enough is enough. He pushes the tablet towards McKay’s feet and sits at the head of the bed beside him.
McKay’s eyes are trying to focus somewhere in the direction of the doorway. “I’m sorry about Lieutenant Ford.”
That’s why Sheppard is here. He’d laid in the dark, eyes pointed at the ceiling but still seeing Ford’s wrathful expression as the transporter doors closed between them. He was–is–responsible. For Ford. Markham. Smith. Sumner. He’d figured Rodney would be up, detoxing from the amphetamines or doing a postmortem on one thing or another, and he’d been right.
“Yeah,” is all he can really say. He looks at the tablet by their feet, gestures with his chin. “What were you working on?”
McKay tosses the rest of the sandwich on his nightstand and blinks tears from his bloodshot eyes. “Grodin, he–” Tears well up again and he sets his jaw, shakes his head, and instead picks up his tablet and shows Sheppard his weekly agenda. “Very few remaining have the interdisciplinary skills to be as useful in the field, and I’m not putting Zelenka at risk by sending him out there with any regularity. I’ve been looking at where it would make sense to squeeze in worksho-o-o–” McKay interrupts his high-speed explanation with a protracted yawn, opening his mouth wide and stretching. “Workshops.”
“That’s–a really good idea, Rodney.”
“I’m so…” McKay’s chin trembles, and he stares at where his hands sit, face-up in his lap.
“Hey,” Sheppard says, waiting until McKay’s eyes slowly come up to meet his. “Hey. Think you can sleep?” McKay nods, glassy-eyed.
Sheppard switches the lights off with a thought, ignoring McKay’s bitter ‘show-off,’ placing the tablet on the nightstand beside him. He gets his boots and gear off, helps McKay with his, and pulls the sheet up over them both.
McKay is pretty rank from a week of amphetamine usage, stress sweat, and not showering. But this quiet space, with McKay’s overheated body and heavy breathing, is the reassurance he needed. Atlantis is still standing, most of them remain to fight another day, and McKay is here to keep his eyes on the horizon while Sheppard watches his six.
It’s unlike anything Sheppard has had anywhere else. Better than the wind in his hair on a flat stretch of highway, the view of the sky from a ferris wheel, or the freedom of flight.
“I’m glad you’re alive,” McKay murmurs, barely awake.
Sheppard grins at him. “Ditto.”

Please send in Stargate fic requests! :)
Specifically, please send in (via askbox or DMs) a prompt from one of the following bingo cards, then give me some idea for what direction you want me to take it in. Like, “This prompt jumped out at me because it made me think of ___,” or, “This prompt would be so perfect for a post-ep to ___ where X and Y have a conversation about ___,” or, “This prompt goes really well with my favourite trope of ___.” Be as incredibly detailed as you wish!
The reason I’m sharing my cards is to hopefully use people’s requests to give me a breather from my current main Stargate WIPs, so I’d like to focus on the writing part and not the coming-up-with-an-outline part here—and that means you cannot possibly get “too” detailed!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since this is a Halloween Horror Bingo, I am open to dark themes and unhappy endings. Include any content warnings you’d like! Conversely, I am equally open to playing around with the prompts and with the aesthetic of the whole event to squeeze out some fluff and schmoop. If you specify no preference, I shall go wherever the wind takes me.
See below for more request parameters but the long and short of it is shoot your shot with an idea and I just might write it. 👀
What I can definitely do:
Sam/Jack focus (UST, MCD, hand-wavey happily married during canon shut the heck up, any other flavour except smut)
genfic, incl. solo character stuff
^ including-including your favourite nameless/background character getting their time in the spotlight if you want!
canon compliant, canon divergence, pre-canon (I would include post-canon but I’ve only just started s9 of SG1 and s2 of SGA 😅)
AUs (from within the show or your own idea)
What I might do (i.e., feel free to send it in but I hope you don’t mind if I get back to you and am not feeling it):
other Canon x Canon ships in the background of a genfic or S/J story
Canon x Reader
Canon x OC (gimme deets and I’ll see what I can do)
What I will NOT do:
SGU or Origins because I haven’t watched them, sorry…
any of the movies except the original because I haven’t watched them yet, sorry :/
any of the books because—three guesses why
smut (if you send in a spicy prompt, I will find a way to make it T-rated 😂)
You can make multiple requests, but send them as separate asks please. And try not to combine prompts, but I won’t mind if you really want to!
Anon is on. Judgement is off. Let me write your highly specific plot bunny? :)
(It helps me along and betters your chances if you do, but you don’t have to give me a load of details! <3)

Gotta know what "Long Forgotten Light at the end of the World" is because that title SLAPS
Doesn't it though??? ❤️❤️❤️
"Long Forgotten Light at the End of the World" is my John/Todd historical AU, because I an utterly obsessed with historical AUs, and none of the SGA ones that I can find have Wraith characters.
@aintgonnatakethis asked me about this one too, so click here for more rambling about the premise/backstory and a few pages from chapter 1, which tells what Todd's up to.
Or read below the cut for 4 more pages, now from chapter 2, introducing Sheppard (& Co)!!
The winter day was dreary and overcast as John Sheppard walked down Queen's Boulevard. The weather rather suited his mood, as his morning business had not developed in the way he had wished and bright sunshine would have felt like salt in the wound. He ducked his head against the bustle of the street, and tried to ignore the Wraith passing him in carriages. In the day to day of his life in the army he could at least pretend that he and his fellow soldiers fought for reasons that had nothing to do with the Wraith or their Queen. But that had been stripped from him, and it was the Wraith’s fault.
He walked quickly to his destination and was at the turn onto Gold Street before he had time to truly stew on the subject of his misfortune. Which was all to the good, as Teyla possessed an absolutely prescient ability to know when his thoughts had strayed to darker topics, and he hated to bear her looks of disappointment after she had been so generous with him.
Three houses down Gold Street was the Miller's, and he mounted the broad steps with easy familiarity. While not in the best area of town, finding better accommodations would have required calling on Colonel Caldwell, or- even worse- his brother David. Either would have come with certain obligations that John was not eager to engage; he would have felt further indebted to the Colonel who had already done too much for him, and an appeal to David, to his family, would have meant submitting to yet more scorn concerning his discharge and the determining of a course for his future that he knew could only be filled with unhappiness. Teyla's knowing looks were easier to bear and her aspirations for his future were, if often frustrating, more welcome. He thought her of a better moral fiber than his family in any case, and worth aspiring to please. And his other housemates were also of a company much to be preferred.
John opened the front door and stepped inside. The foyer was lit from high windows in the rear wall which let light fall in, over the staircase that led to the upper floors, and down to the doorway. When the weather was overcast, as it often was, the arrangement lent a somber, mysterious aura to the space, which Teyla felt was good for business. The dark alcove below the staircase, from which Ronon insisted on watching the door, was currently brightly lit by an oil lamp situated on the corner of Ronon's desk. The desk was a huge block affair, an old partner's desk he'd salvaged from some bankers and had dragged into the front corner, where he often sat sharpening knives. After he'd frightened too many visitors this way, Teyla had insisted on the expense of the lamp if he was going to have his knives out. John didn't think a single oil lamp illuminating a six foot man with wild hair and a desk full of knives, and with Ronon's piercing glare, was any more comforting of a greeting than dimness and the sound of a blade against leather, but then it hadn't been his decision.
The lamp was burning cheerily today, the light glinting off the lace-hooks of his boots where they were perched on the corner of the desk as Ronon looked up with his usual glare. He grunted, his expression softening when he saw it was John.
His sharp-eyed gaze glittered as much as the knife's edge he was honing. The light of the lamp also caught the alabaster of his waistcoat buttons; a coat was nowhere in evidence, but that was not unusual as Ronon thought them overly formal and an encumbrance. "How did it go?" he asked.
John grunted in his own turn. "It didn’t. As you predicted." He took off his hat and overcoat.
Ronon's responding grunt took on a flavor of self righteousness.
John rubbed a hand through his hair. "I know. You were right." He sighed.  "I thought-" He shook his head. "It doesn't matter."
Ronon swung his long legs down from where they were draped over the desk. "You wanted to do something for Teyla," he observed. "Help her with the business."
John flushed. It was true, and he'd too often had his sentiment used against him; having it remarked upon at all made him defensive.
But Ronon was not like the stone-faced generals who'd sat in judgment of him, and even less like the wild-eyed Wraith who were the reason he'd lost everything in the first place. Ronon had also been a beneficiary of Teyla's generosity, and knew the urge she inspired, to treat others in kind.
"It seemed the least I could do," John allowed.
Ronon nodded, like the feeling was perfectly understandable, but said, "I think she'd rather have had you here."
John laughed without amusement, but couldn't hold back a genuine smile. "I do believe you're right." He wasn't comfortable with his newly discovered abilities and usually attempted to avoid her requests for his assistance in matters of that nature, though if she'd been seeking him this morning his ability to evade her had been a happy accident.
Ronon leaned back, watching him for a moment, then nodded. He directed a long look up the staircase and added, "She's been having trouble with McKay."
Taken off guard, John laughed more easily. "Ahh, I see, I'm valued as a mediator."
Ronon grunted, though it was a fond sound. "He's had a letter from the Scot, sent him into a whole fit. He's been burning things all day. She just got him to stop half a mark ago or you'd have smelt it the minute you walked in."
John sighed. Rodney McKay owned the building and had been generous enough to not only give Teyla space for her business dealings but to allow Teyla and her foundlings, as Rodney called them, to take rooms there. Since the arrangement had begun, John had learned that McKay wasn't the easiest individual to live with, which made his generosity make more sense; engaging boarders in the usual manner in an environment where one periodically exploded, burned, dissected, and otherwise tested the bounds of the physical properties of objects would definitely not have been an easy prospect, even without considering how the neighborhood had fallen into disrepute in the last century. Though as he turned to mount the stairs, John chided himself for the thought. Rodney had a very generous spirit, however much it was often buried under an acerbic tongue and self-interested mien.
He heard the front door open behind him, and paused at the turning of the stairs to see who it was. Teyla's clients were their only usual visitors; that and the post boy whipping back and forth to deliver Beckett's and McKay's correspondence, though if Rodney had recently had a letter it couldn't be that.
It was a pair of young women. The first one was a honey blonde with a determined expression in her blue eyes. John was thrice removed from knowing the intimacies of current fashion- by profession, inclination, and having been shunned by his family and thus the ton- but he recognized the woman's gown as fashionable; the opulence of the mantua style combined with its simplicity had made it popular with young women who preferred needing less assistance in getting in and out of their clothing, a good ten years ago. It was a dress that had cost some money, even if it wasn't current: either she was the daughter of a noble family, or she was employed by a Wraith. Something about her made him want to guess the latter, though most Wraith had little interest in beautiful young women.
John was somewhat shocked to realize he knew the second woman. Lieutenant Laura Cadman was wearing the formal uniform of an active duty member of Her Majesty's Royal Corp. Female members, only allowed since the Wraith descended at the turn of the last century, were given uniforms that preserved their modesty: a long skirt, wool in the current climate, and a high necked bodice with sleeves past the elbow; a compromise between the ton that the Wraith had allowed to remain and the Queen's proclamation that limiting access to any service on the basis of gender was absurd when all humans were equally lesser in her eyes. Cadman's uniform was deep blue, noting her as a member of the Scientific Reserve Force.
Her eyes went to him first, so John greeted her, "Lieutenant Cadman."
"Sheppard," she replied. Her smile was thin and wry. The title she wanted to give him but couldn't perched on her lips but died unspoken. John wanted to appreciate the informality of the greeting as much as he hated the way any greeting forced the truth into the open- that he had been dismissed from the service. If not for Colonel Caldwell stepping in he'd likely be dead now, sent with the Queen's jubilee tribute, for what he'd done; or, what he'd failed to do. All in all, his gratitude and the pain evened each other out and left him feeling annoyed. "What are you doing here?"
She cleared her throat. "Jennifer, this is Mister John Sheppard. May I present Miss Jennifer Keller."
John sighed. He should walk back down and greet them properly, but he didn't want them here. Instead, he gestured and introduced, "Ronon Dex."
Ronon looked amused by the whole undertaking and saluted them with one of his knives. The society woman, Keller, looked doubtful, but John was honestly surprised she hadn't fainted or recoiled from Ronon.
"I'm looking for someone named Teyla," Keller said. She raised an eyebrow at John and Ronon as if she wasn't sure she'd come to the right place.
"What for?" Ronon asked.
"I have a friend who needs help with something," Keller answered.
John snorted at her deliberate vagueness.
Ronon grunted. "You don't get to Teyla without telling me who gave you her name." He looked at John. "And if Sheppard knows you, then only if he says you're okay."
Keller's expression widened. "I don't know Mister Sheppard, but I was given Teyla's name by a Doctor Carson Beckett." She pulled a letter out of her handbag and held it up with one gloved hand.
Ronon took it from her with a quick movement of fingers; John admired that she didn't even flinch as he loomed over her, though Cadman watched Ronon suspiciously. Ronon looked to Sheppard.
John sighed. "Cadman's alright," he admitted.
She smiled. "Thanks, Shep."
Unwillingly, John felt a grin pull at his mouth.
"Letter's in the Scot's hand." Ronon nodded decisively. "I'll put them in the blue room. You get Teyla."
John nodded in turn, and continued up the stairs.
He knocked lightly at Teyla's door but when there was no answer he continued down the hall to Rodney's lab.
Opening the door filled the hall with the overwhelming scent of burned ink, which had previously been faint.
John coughed. "McKay?" The entryway was narrow, bracketed by tall bookcases, the path inside winding between them before diverging to the lab on the left and a small sitting area to the right.
"Yes, yes," Rodney said loudly. "I did it a purpose, the results have  been very informative, and I will not burn the house down." He peered out from behind a bookcase overflowing with scientific pamphlets. "Oh, Sheppard." Rodney blinked. "Have you been out?"
"Yes. I just got back."
"Ah, of course. I don't recall your presence at the height of the conflict but," he stepped out and gestured to the laboratory behind him, "I assure you, burning the papers was quite informative as to the inks' properties, and I have the delight of informing Carson that he is inaccurate in his surmising that his ink qualifies as 'invisible'." He sniffed derisively. "It's almost easier just writing in cypher. Though not as entertaining, I suppose." He grinned.
John had to grin back. "Have you seen Teyla?"
"I am here, John," she said. Her voice was patient, and laced with amusement.
"You have visitors," he said as he peered around the stacks of shelves and found her seated comfortably on the Camelback that dominated the small sitting area, her feet tucked under her as she sipped a cup of coffee.
"Business?" she inquired.
John nodded. "They have a letter of introduction from Beckett."
Rodney snorted, but disappeared back into his laboratory.
Teyla smiled. "You are finished with the experiment, correct Rodney? I'd like to warn our guests if they should expect any strange odors or sounds."
Rodney snorted again, calling from the other room, "You know very well I'm finished and am noting my findings." He appeared in the door, scowling, but asked pleasantly enough, "How was your morning, Sheppard?"
"Unproductive." John couldn't help adding, "I thought you hadn't remembered."
"I remembered," he said defensively. "I just forgot it was today." He frowned. "I'm sorry that it didn't pan out." He turned away suddenly, busily looking for something; John suspected it was a cover for realizing he hadn’t meant to discuss the issue in front of Teyla- she was looking down at her cup, too wise by half- but Rodney found a crumpled jacket where it had fallen behind a precarious stack of papers and frowned at it. “Give me a moment, and I’ll meet you there.”
“Are you coming down, Rodney? Splendid.” Telya smiled with real pleasure and rose to kiss his cheek.
John offered his arm and escorted her down the stairs.

sheppard gives kolya to todd??? 👀👀👀👀👀👀👀🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
@sga-owns-my-soul So when I first saw the episode where Sheppard kills Kolya, my first thought was how much more valuable he'd be to them alive. And then my thought process moved on from 'trade him back to the Genii where they'll punish him' to 'what if Sheppard gave in to his dark side and handed him over to Todd instead'…
He has that capacity within him, ya know? The only thing he's truly scared of is himself… and he fights against it every day. But what if he slipped at just the right moment? 👀
The idea's been marinating in my head for quite a while, I mentioned it on here in passing and there was enough interest for me to give it a bash. Two chapters are done and the third is well underway. When that's done I'll start posting with the hope I'll be able to keep up and not have any long breaks between updates!
Sheppard's darkness intrigues me. I wanna get inside his head and pick apart the building blocks of who he is and how he became that way (read: his father had no small in hand in it!)
To show weakness was indecent. That was perhaps the one lesson his father had taught him that had stuck.

Tag Game: AO3 and fic writing!
Tagged by @cheeseplants and @dbacklot99 💖💖
How many works do you have on ao3? 24
What's your total ao3 word count? 303,167 with big collabs! But without those, I clock in at 170,775. 👀
What fandoms do you write for? Good Omens currently, but have written in Stargate Atlantis, Firefly, and Battlestar Galactica as well as one classic film fic.
Top five fics by kudos:
Not including the big collabs, and all Good Omens (E, NSFW):
A Sixty In Nine Saves Time
Aziraphale reads the wrong book, uh oh! Feeling responsible (or maybe just titillated), Crowley tries to lend a hand.
Takedown / Reversal
After their near miss in 1941 with a bullet, Furfur, and Nazi zombies, Aziraphale and Crowley retire to the bookshop for a mellow evening of too much wine. Unfortunately, someone is wearing quite the saucy fedora, and someone else takes quite a fancy to it. Obviously wrestling and banging and angst must ensue. Bittersweet ending with a 1955 followup. (inspired by @gleafer arts!)
Shake Like Hell and Spell Success
Set after S1/Armageddon. Newly smitten (I believe), Aziraphale tries to create the perfect first-time scenario but has difficulties. As usual, Crowley doesn’t know what’s going on until he does, and then he knocks it out of the park on his first swing, because, demon? There's lingerie involved.
Wooing Peaceably
Sometime after the Second Coming, Crowley and Aziraphale are visiting Crete during olive picking season. A little bit of happiness (and smut) after too long. Olives olives olives and olive oil!
An Arrangement in the Dark
England during Georgian/Regency time period. Crowley turns down Aziraphale’s offer of an Arrangement swap for a Northamptonshire holiday house party. Naturally Aziraphale turns up anyway to see what kind of especially Evil! wiles need thwarting.
Do you respond to comments? Absolutely! Like all of us I adore comments. Someone liking a fic I wrote enough to say so is such a great feeling.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Definitely Takedown / Reversal, although I tried to soften it with a follow-up. Not sure if that worked. 😆 Also Impersonal (Firefly, Inara/Zoe) is a bit angsty but hopeful.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I think a lot of my fics have pretty happy endings! Maybe It's the Edge of the World As We Know It?
Do you get hate on fics? Not yet...
Do you write smut? Yes ma’am
Craziest crossover: nothing super wild? Most GO fic features some kind of fun historical reference or person (without feeling like RPF to me since they’re usually long dead, but essentially…) @angelictroublemaker and I wrote a Firefly/SGA crossover and that was about as wild as I got.
Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not to my knowledge 👀
Have you ever had a fic translated? Not yet!
Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes! My first ever fic was cowritten with @angelictroublemaker and I’ve done more collabs within Good Omens fandom. My fave so far is a big ol project with @dbacklot99 and @sixbynine-da ❤️. The others:
Coming Home - A Choose Your Own Adventure Story
Interdimensional Leakage
Keeping it in the Vault (and its less-hairy counterpart)
All time favorite ship? I love Aziraphale/Crowley so much. I have lots of other favorite ships from fandoms I've read but not written in, though.
What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Probably one of my Human AU bits from the Guild Thursday sprints: Aziraphale as wedding planner/Crowley as floral designer, or Aziraphale as photography dabbler/Crowley as Some-Eldritch-Thing-Or-Other he (Az) starts capturing on film. And just typing these out makes me want to work on them now, so NEVER SAY NEVER.
What are your writing strengths? Description, grammar(ish), dialogue, smut (I hope. I like to write it and rewrite it at least).
What are your writing weaknesses? Description 😳 Also I have to really work on movement of plot (if I actually manage to have one, instead of events that happen for Purposes of Smut) and pacing.
Thoughts on dialogue in another language? Perfect for Good Omens in my opinion. I like it overall.
First fandom you wrote in? I wrote a (disavowed) Mary Sue-insert fic for Star Trek Voyager in a notebook when I was a youngun. My first posted fic was for Battlestar Galactica.
Favorite fic you've written? I really like how To Ride a Journey on a Jade turned out, and also Sea Change. I also am loving working on Sins of Knowledge, although the size of it is intimidating to me.
And also whichever one I'm finishing up at the moment! Right now that's a Pride Exchange fic that I'll share (if the giftee is willing) this Saturday, and an angsty Doppelbanging fic that may or may not see light of day.
Tagging: @angelictroublemaker, @lemon-tart-221, @ghst-signal, @ladybracknellssherry, @demonsandpieohmy and anyone else who wants to play!

Hints and Could Be's
Stargate: Atlantis; Evan Lorne Word Count: 1013 (T)W: Being lifted against your will. Request: Yes. “I was wondering if you could do an Major Lorne imagine or Fanfic. Set in Atlantis but can have a cameo of SG1 💁🏼‍♀️ Where reader/Yn is an archeologist (like Jackson) has a PHD and they meet one day and it’s a hint of what could be, head strong like carter. Enjoys making fun of flyboys, is kinda a “hot girl” if you will 🤦🏼‍♀️ (trying a different than the shy “nerdy” girl) could of joined the Airforce but has too strong of a memory of what Generals can be like. (Has family ties to the airforce! Oh she totally likes to “bullies” McKay, he actually respects her (secretly) because she can stand up for herself and show off her knowledge. She might have a dark past?? Unsure Have fun! Thanks for looks at my request 🙋🏼‍♀️” @stargurl-battleship A/N: I am so, incredibly sorry this has take so long! Some of your request I'm kind of working into an SGA long shot and to prevent myself from (accidentally) reusing lines, I wasn't able to cover everything in the request, and I'm so sorry about that! I hope this is close to what you were looking for!
Being part of the Stargate programme was one of the best things that could have happened to you. Never once in all your years of studying, did you think you would ever get to use your degree to the extent which you currently were. Seeing the different races and cultures that participated towards the evolution of your own made your other hopes for your degree usage pale in comparison. You hadn’t realised that the stargate programme would be made up of mainly military personnel and was even more shocked to discover that most of them were Airforce and the few scientists that were in the team tended to be civilian contractors, with Major Samantha Carter seeming to be the exception to the rule. You studied under Dr Daniel Jackson for the first year or so of your career with the Stargate programme, you learned the dialects, the common and uncommon hieroglyphs, the correct pronunciation of words from Dr Jackson and Teal’c.
Eventually you joined a different SG team and would travel with a Major Evan Lorne and his team once Dr Jackson had deemed you ‘well versed’ enough to go solo. You and Lorne both got along well enough and had a similar bond to O’Neil and Jackson. You would call out Lorne for his ‘military tactics’ and he would call you out on your ‘naïve and protocol breaking ways’. When you were both made aware that you would be joining the Atlantis programme and travelling off world for an extended period of time, you made sure to grab any PDF’s you could on the language and dialects of the ancients and attempted to pack as lightly as you could. When Lorne came by your office to check in on your progress, he was highly amused and alarmed at the books piled high, the scattering of objects and the general untidiness of your normally pristine workspace. He had the greatest smirk on his face when you randomly popped your head out looking extremely disheveled, and making Lorne catch his breath without realising it.
“No, no, no, it can’t be time to leave already! I haven’t finished packing yet!” You panicked more, bouncing between different piles of books and artefacts. Lorne became more amused and continued to watch you from the doorway.
“Came on nerd, let’s go through this together, you still have a couple of hours until we actually have to leave, yet.” He put his rucksack down by the doorway and made his way into the office.
After a lot of debate and a few arguments of what’s logical to take and what’s essential to take, you and Lorne had finally managed to get a) your bag packed and b) drastically reduce the amount of bags you were trying to take through the gate with you. You both made it to the gate room just as the dialling sequence was finishing, much to Lorne’s annoyance, and bid your farewell to the Cheyenne Mountain Complex.
When you both arrived at the Atlantis site, it was breathtaking. You spent your first few days exploring the city, or what was open and accessible of it. You met Sheppard and his team. You found Tayla and Ronin friendly enough and learning of their cultures was fascinating. McKay was arrogant, selfish and definitely someone you made a mental note to avoid in the future. You were capable of keeping pace with McKay, but wasn’t up for the constant debate that you felt was sure to follow with being in a close proximity to him. You heard from Tayla that McKay appeared to enjoy your company and the intellectual sparring. You mentally gagged at the thought. When you were sent on your first mission with Lorne and Sheppard’s team you were excited, you made sure to keep at least 2 people between yourself and McKay and stuck close with Lorne.
When you were translating something, lost in thought and focussing on the writing and translation, Lorne would make sure that you remembered to hydrate and eat (even if it was just a snack) and when he was doing a perimeter check he would ensure that someone else from your team would take over the role of ensuring you ate and drank.
Once the survey of the planet was completed, you had packed up your equipment and was trying to grab some last pictures to study when you returned to Atlantis. Lorne made sure to watch your 6 and gently hurry you along. After about 5 minutes the patience ended and while you continued to ignore his pleas to head back to the gate, Lorne eventually huffed and grabbed you, throwing you over his shoulder and hauling ass back to the gate. Your protests being greatly ignored. Sheppard looked incredibly amused at the sight before him, Lorne attempting to run with your legs randomly kicking in protest and your faint voice calling for 5 more minutes to go back as you had missed a few columns for researching. Tayla completed the dialling sequence as you made it to the gate and Lorne refused to put you down until you were all through the gate. You huffed and squirreled yourself away in the research lab, using the Ancients data base to try and help translate faded parts of the text.
Lorne would periodically pop in or send Doctor Beckett in with nutrients and hydration, but you were so lost in thought (and truthfully still annoyed at Lorne) that half the time your forgot to eat the ever-growing snack/fruit basket which was accumulating on your desk. On Lorne’s 8th check-in he threatened to carry you to med bay for nutrition if you didn’t sit and eat soon. “Y’know I’m tired of you airforce boys trying to threaten me with med bay.” Lorne tried to hold back a smirk and stopped himself from bringing up the fact that you should be used to it growing up with ‘flyboys’.
The light smirk you attempted to push down when speaking with Lorne stole his breath. His checking in on you, made your heart skip.

20 Questions for fanfic writers
Tagged by @trainofcommand and @cordeliaperry , thank you 😁
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
351
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
969,232 !
(I had a soft goal of trying to break a million this year, but I probably won't quite make it. Ah well, next year!)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Literally anything I see or read that happens to hit squirrel-brain in the right spot: Stargate, Star Wars, Cosmere / Stormlight Archive / Sanderson's books generally, Loki series & other MCU media, OFMD, Good Omens, Dresden Files, Star Trek (and one-offs for random-ass shows like the Mentalist, 1899, tLoVM, Echoes, etc). Honorable mentions to past beloved fandoms that I'm not super likely to really get back to again include Midsomer Murders, the Witcher, Assassin's Creed, and the Expanse 💕
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Top spot is A wonderful thing (OFMD); the next four in order are all Witcher - A Tight Fit, Stolen Moments, Keep it up, and Undignified.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do! I love seeing people's reactions, and letting them know how much I appreciate that they took the time and energy to comment (because fuck knows, I don't always have the spoons to comment on stuff myself). And it's so nice to get that connection with people and get excited about stuff together!
(I have missed some replies here and there just because of over-stressing about what to respond, and subsequently feeling guilty that I left them unanswered so long 🙈 ahh, anxiety-brain, you sure are special)
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
This is one is easy, it's definitely Zombie / what's in your head. One of only two times I've written Major Character Death, and the only time I've used the Angst and Tragedy tag.
It's fucking brutal, honestly. Damn good, but ouch. Dark. Sometimes I reread it when I just want to cry hopelessly for awhile. It's like an... emotional reset or something.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Most of my fics have happy endings in the happy-sexy-sated vein, but most of my fics are also happy-sexy-oneshots so there isn't any real conflict or worry to come back from that makes the happy ending something that wasn't a given, if that makes sense. My first thought for something more involved was Inflection Point, but it's not exactly a happy ending for everyone. So I think I'll go with Curious Creatures, because even though I know how it ends and I wrote the damn thing, I still somehow get worried it will have a sad ending every time I go back and reread it, and then I'm relieved all over again at the end.
(Honorable mention to the Adventures of Admiral Prawn and Yee-Claw, because how can we not be happy that he found his lost hat with the help of a new friend 😂)
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Honestly nowhere near as much as I'd kind of expect to? 😆
I had some rando dickhead giving me grief in comments on a couple Assassin's Creed fics, and I've seen people griping in fandom social media spaces about a couple of my works and the fact they (gasp) existed in the tags at all, but mostly people have been decent and kept it to themselves when they don't like me or my writing 💖
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
Yes. All of it. All the smut.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
Not really! Never published one to AO3. Closest I've got is that Witcher-Assassins Creed WIP languishing in my google docs, and a silly fun little SGA-Original SW thing on tumblr from probably a couple years ago now.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Pretty sure, yeah. Not to the point of really being able to do anything about it but it kinda sucked. Shit happens.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! A couple of them that I know of 😁
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
Oh hell yeah. Many times 💕
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
Cock/Hole.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
Mmm I have two published WIPs that fall into that category exactly, Ill-advised encounters and The skills of Assassins. They were really fun, I'd have really liked to finish them, annnd I probably never will 😅
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think I'm pretty damn good at pacing a story, whether it's a oneshot or a longer fic, and at getting ~feelings~ across (whether it's horny feelings, smushy soft feelings, angsty feelings, whatever). And I've been told that I'm good at like... developing a setting and characters in a way that flows or unfolds naturally with the story while you read? Or something like that? (they said it better and it made me very happy)
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
That would be not getting things actually started and just keeping the ideas in my head because What If this time I can't make the words do the thing good enough. Especially whenever I have ideas for something potentially longer or more involved, I do tend to kinda shoot myself in the foot by going "eehhhhh that would be a LOT of work though.... I don't want that kind of commitment....... Maybe I'll write down the idea later............"
Also being constantly distracted by shiny new things. But that part's fun 😆
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I use italics, try to limit it to single words or short phrases, and where possible I make the meaning clear or translated somehow within the fic itself. Last resort, I'll add a little glossary to the start or end notes if it's important to the story.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Midsomer Murders 💖
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
I genuinely don't have a favourite! There's a few I'm extra proud of myself for accomplishing, but I really like most of what I've ever written for one reason or another.
Or another answer would be, my current favourite changes like every week and is usually one of my recent fics 😂 Right now it's probably The Taste of My Blade; it'll be something else in a month.
No pressure tags: @dewdropreader , @mirilyawrites , @starport-seven-five , @loki-is-my-kink-awakening , @dedkake , @wantonwhale , and I won't spam tag all the same people as I did in yesterday's tag game in case you're not feeling it right now, but as always - if you see this and want to be tagged, you are! 💙

in all the wrong places, SGA, asexual John Sheppard
John Sheppard learns early on in life that people’s acceptance of him is contingent on the degree to which he can give them something they want. Sometimes people want respect, like his teachers, and sometimes they want deference, like his father.
Sometimes all they want is a smile or a wink. And sometimes they want something from him that makes his skin itch, when hands paw at his body and faces blur up close, breathing heavily.
He learns to smile through it. To flirt just enough to convey a teasing possibility. Sometimes that’s enough. Sometimes it’s not.
-
He’s determined to fit in in college. He’s not going to be the posh kid. He’s not going to be the sensitive one. He’s going to be one of the guys.
He’s not big enough or athletic enough to make the football team but he learns to drink and swear and make filthy jokes to fit in with the football crowd. Occasionally he catches some of the guys looking at him for a beat too long. He gets nicknamed pretty boy, and it’s not what he wanted but there’s a kind of interest behind it; it’s clearly not entirely a joke.
Todd is the college’s star running back, all long limbs and pale, delicate features. John lets Todd fuck him after big games, long fingers leaving dark bruises over his slender hips.
It’s not quite the acceptance he craves, but it’s close.
Todd makes John swear not to tell anyone, and he never does.
-
It’s a relief when he graduates college and meets Nancy. She’s military too; she understands the life. She understands him. She’s smart and capable and beautiful and, for whatever reason, she seems to genuinely enjoy his company.
He respects the hell out of her and that should be enough. He stands at an altar with her in his family’s old Catholic church, and it’s the only time he can ever recall his father looking proud of him. He promises to love and honor her and he means it, he really does.
Something uncomfortable twists in his chest when he thinks about the word forever but that’s just jitters and he can do this, he can be her husband, he can, he can.
-
He’s only been married a few months when he gets sent on deployment with Holland. It starts off casual between them: a hand meeting his late at night, a spark of pleasure when they’re both lonely and far from home. That’s just how it goes and it doesn’t even count as cheating because it’s not like there are any feelings involved.
But there’s something about Holland’s goofy grin when he teases Sheppard about his non-regulation hair or the knowing look he shoots him on cold nights when they’re sat across the fire that spells trouble.
He knows it’s all going to go to shit when he lets Holland kiss him one night. And then Holland’s bird goes down in enemy territory and Sheppard doesn’t even stop to think before charging after him, and Holland dies in his arms in a freezing cold desert.
He gets discharged and Nancy knows, somehow. She isn’t even mad, which would have been easier to deal with. She’s just sad, and that makes John want to dash himself against the rocks.
-
It will be different in Atlantis, he decides. It’s a fresh start. No one knows him here and he can be whoever he wants to be.
They haven’t been in Pegasus long when he meets Chaya. Rodney keeps making cracks about how he’s a charmer with all the ladies so perhaps this is who he’s supposed to be. She looks at him with a depth of perception which makes his stomach roll but she’s kind and gentle and her hair is soft and smells like the sea.
She kisses him on a balcony overlooking the city and this is how romance is supposed to go, isn’t it?
She smiles at him knowingly, and it’s a relief when she ascends to a place he can’t follow.
-
He’s never had a boss he respects like he does Elizabeth. She’s caring and thoughtful but she’s got a core of iron and she won’t let him push her around.
There’s something which simmers hot between them and he convinces himself it must be romance. When two aliens take over their bodies and make them kiss, it’s all anyone on the base talks about for days. That must mean something.
He waits for a quiet night, when there’s no imminent threat and the salt breeze carries through the city, and he goes to her quarters. She smiles brightly when she opens the door and invites him in.
He kisses her, because it seems like the right thing to do.
She puts a hand on his chest to stop him.
“You don’t want this,” she says, head cocked to one side. Almost curious.
He bites down the urge to argue with her. “I want to want it,” he ends up on.
She looks at him very, very kindly. “John, that’s not the same thing.”
-
He never feels more at peace than when he sits in Atlantis’s control chair. Even when they’re in a battle his mind feels clear and full of purpose. Interfacing with the city is like slipping into a cool river, his thoughts and the city’s sensors intertwining and mixing.
Why is your mind so disquieted? the city asks. You are at war with yourself.
I need to be better, he thinks. I need to be more.
No. You are sufficient, John Sheppard, it says. Just as you are.
-
The room smells of burnt popcorn. Teyla has charred the hell out of the kernels but she says it tastes better that way and, heaven help him, John is starting to agree with her.
Ronon insists that they watch Jaws again. For a man who has never seen a shark, he sure does love movies about them.
John flops onto the floor in front of the sofa. Rodney sits behind him and plays with his hair, while bickering with Ronon over whether a shark can accurately be called a large fish.
Maybe this is what happiness is, Sheppard. Atlantis's voice vibrates in the back of his mind. Maybe this is enough. Maybe this is the acceptance you’ve been searching for.
For the first time, he thinks it might be.

20 questions for fic writers
thank you, @mylittleredgirl for tagging me! Have I done this...perhaps. Will do it again! It might also be new? the questions are fun.
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
423
2. What’s your total ao3 word count?
2,817,922 (hitting 3 million should be fun). I average 6661 words (ha) per fic. Which is interesting. I have 43 drabbles and 7 fics over 100,000 words so they must even out.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Once Upon a Time (though not for years). Star Trek the Next Generation, Star Trek Voyager, Star Trek Discovery. Stargate Atlantis and Agents of SHIELD. many other things, but not a lot of fics. (12 or less).
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Stray Feathers and Scales (Emma Swan/Regina Mills, Once Upon a Time) I almost listed this one as Maleficent/Regina, which it isn't..kind of is, could have been poly if I'd thought about). This fic has HUGE stats for me and I haven't reread it in years. Parts of it are really detailed though, and it's VERY me. It's all the tropes.
Lost Leaves of Autumn (Catelyn Stark/Ned Stark, Game of Thrones) This one is very soft and doesn't really belong in the GoT universe, which is so brutal, but I really love Catelyn.
Thawing Deep (Sansa Stark/Margaery Tyrell, Game of Thrones). They could have worked! I haven't read this one in ages either.
Her Majesty's Mercy (Maleficent/Regina Mills, Once Upon a Time) The best Once fic I wrote, in my opinion. I remember the fun of writing this one.
A Funny Thing Happened at a Stark Tower Gala (Melinda May/Phil Coulson, Agents of SHIELD). Maybe this got recced somewhere? Maybe AoS fandom was just big that year? It's cute and fun, and for some reason has a bunch of kudos.
(this is long)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to? If it's a fic that I'm really into I'll reply. I'm kind of giddy about comments on the ones I'm writing right now. If it's an older one that I am sentimental for I try to reply. If I'm not into it at the moment (I am kind of burnt out on Once Upon a Time, and I haven't been into Chakotay lately so I've been kind of meh on my own Janeway/Chakotay stuff). I try to, but I am fickle.
I did just have this really positive experience where I posted my chapter of Quantum Variations (which is my long Disco WIP) and the chapter was kind of a mess, but I was so happy to post it, I really didn't care) and people found things for me to fix and were really kind about it. It felt good, for a chapter with a bunch of errors.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I killed Elizabeth Weir once, but she came back, so the ending was pretty hopeful. I don't write much angst without a happy ending.
I have Janeway rather self-destructively run off with the Borg Queen but... uh...it wasn't that angsty. Dark, but she kind of wanted it.
There's probably something really angsty I'm just not thinking of, but I don't reread my really old stuff often. (some of them I honestly have no idea what the fic is about).
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
there's a really sappy SGA one where they have a bunch of kids.
Firefly (Star Trek Discovery, Philippa and...learning to have feelings). maybe? Considering how messy Philippa's feelings are, she ends up happy, and more human, and she goes on a very long journey about it.
8. Do you get hate on fic?
Not lately. I did, I have, but it's been years. Once Upon a Time fandom you were a wild ride.
I did make massive drama back in the day with Janeway/Crusher, because I really wanted to get to play with them in the fandom space I was in, but that was not the space for that.
9. Do you write smut?
Sometimes! I'm on a somewhat lazy sort of fade to feelings place at the moment. I wrote a somewhat detailed one awhile back, but it was pretty tame. The fic is good though! I really like that one. Trapped in a turbolift and then later they have sex.
Migrations and other recurring phenomena (Star Trek Discovery, Michael Burnham/Laira Rillak). Happy Birthday, madame captain...
10. Do you write crossovers?
Not often, I do have a SGA and TNG crossover where the Enterprise turns up at Atlantis, which is odd but fun, and for some reason (there's a space battle) it got outside my usual audience. I really liked the challenge of all the characters meeting each other.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I recall.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! I think a OUAT one? maybe two? It has happens but...I don't remember which fic it is.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes! Jackie and I wrote two really long ones together (which were a blast). I don't think she's still on tumblr but, @shinewithalltheuntold, I love you).
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
I am really into whatever I am really into at the moment, because I get REALLY into things.
Right now it's Michael Burnham/Laira Rillak, underappreciated ship of my dreams. Michael gets to date the president of the Federation, as a treat. fun bonsu for me is that they have scenes together! and a relationship arc and that's really fun. (even if it's not romantic, it's something and I adore them, so I'll take it).
All time ever? Kathryn Janeway/Beverly Crusher, which made drama, ruined some of my fandom relationships, but really gave me something I needed.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?
I have a few that I just ended, which I'm okay with. I've taken longer hiatuses than I'd like, lately. (life's just been a lot).
I have three right now. Only one is posted and I'll finish that one! (Quantum Variations on a Love Theme (Star Trek Discovery, Michael Burnham/Laira Rillak) is my favorite. It's my heart right now. It's long and it's sometimes hard to write and there's backstory and plot threads BUT I love it.
And it has it's own little following and really that's all a really long fic needs: a handful of people who read it.
The other two I need for Year of the OTP so I should get those done too. (Firefly universe crosses over into canon-adjacent universe and Michael rescues sick Laira fic).
Hopefully they all get finished. (I'm fairly certain they will. I am not answering the question well).
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue. Soft feelings. Incremental character growth. Long, slow, introspective character journeys. Friendship and found family moments. (there are some Tilly and Philippa moments I really like in Firefly, and Tilly and Laira and Tilly and Michael and...people having loving conversations is fun).
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Description. (I feel like I'm really lazy with this most of the time. They're there, you know what they look like).
Urgency. (my fics do not move quickly, or really with a lot of certainty in their direction).
Plot. (frequently feels like an afterthought so people can have feelings).
Focus? I drop plot threads, all the time.
Writing by myself is hard. I ALWAYS want to show whatever I've just done to a person and sometimes people are busy and I am so unmoored by that. (post it anyway, dammit). I adore having someone tell me it's good before I post it.Sometimes I have to post it anyway...
I also write the thing I want to write, over and over in different fandoms and with different a characters and I've written my own variations on "pregnant person goes on a journey with her feelings and grows as a person" at least 10 times.
and I'll do it again.
And I love midly sick character, which I will do again.
I feel bad and don't feel bad? It's what I want to read so I have to write it so I can read it.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I google translate, or skip around it, or switch POV so I don't have to deal with it. It's hard to do and I can usually avoid it. I use a lot of fantasy name/word generator for alien words.
It's mostly [alien name goes here] and hopefully I put something in.
I borrow words (or spelling conventions) from languages I know little pieces of (Finnish, German, Welsh) when I need to for alien things.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Star Trek the Next Generation. (Stranded, Beverly Crusher/Jean-Luc Picard, Will Riker/Deanna Troi, adorable future children who are lesbians). One of my oldest fics is ON Ao3! it is like 22 years old I think? it's a mess and I should fix the formatting but it's SO LONG... It's fine. It's there. It's really not bad for my first long fic.
It's fun to see how far I've come. I wrote that one so long ago that I wrote it under my real name on a usergroup. Then posted it on my own website that I made with html on geoctities.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
Whatever I'm working on right now is usually my favorite. I have fics I am especially fond of.
Her Majesty's Mercy. (Once Upon a Time, Regina Mills/Maleficent) one of the darker things I've written for them, that has a very happy ending it's just...kind of all raw messy feelings)
When I the Starry Courses Know. (Star Trek Voyager: Kathryn Janeway/Borg Queen) very depressed Janeway gives herself up to the Borg Queen, which kind of a Faustian twist to it. It's one of the better things I've ever written).
Fedvision (the Federation does eurovision, with Beverly Crusher/Kathryn Janeway and most of Voyager and TNG at their party). Fedvision is wonderful I should write it again, because it should happen every year. (Disco needs it). This fic is full of bubbly happiness and hats and love. It's full of love.
Firefly (Star Trek Discovery: Mirror Philippa Georgiou and Michael Burnham, and feelings, and learning to trust people). I used to live in a state of angst waiting for someone to comment when I posted...this fic has chapters without any comments at all. I had never written anything this long that didn't depend on a romantic pairing, this one doesn't have one in the center. I took huge break...and came back! I didn't have a beta or an alpha and I lost friends in the time it took to write it, and it still turned out. I grew as a writer and poster with this fic.
Quantum Variations on a Love Theme (Star Trek Discovery: Michael Burnham/Laira Rillak) is my favourite right now, because it's a me fic. It's a long meandering jellyfish fic and Laira's pregnant and I love it. It's the most fun I could have. It has really good parts. (not all of them but, there are some stellar bits). Also it has some detailed world building, and that's fun. This is the me fic that owns my soul at the moment so of course it's my favourite.
I'll just have five...
Tagging @aleksandrachaev @that-one-curly-haired-chick @purlturtle, @winternightjewels @regionalpancake @galactic-pirates @jackabelle73 @holdouttrout (if you fancy it)
and you, if you feel like it, person who made it all the way to the bottom!
