Flow (dir. Gints Zilbalodis) x VIFF 2024.
Latvia's wordless animated fantasy follows a black cat escaping destruction alongside other animals on a raft after a flood and unseen disappearance of all human life. Rendered through what resembles PlayStation 2-era visual graphics technology, the intentionally less detailed or complex animation style only enhances the naturalistic journey of animal survival at sea. It's a deceptively simple film full of splendour and majesty.
Screening at the 2024 Vancouver International Film Festival as part of the Showcase series at SFU Woodward's on Oct. 5 and the Vancouver Playhouse (also VIFF Centre) on Oct. 6.
Also screening at the VIFF Centre from Nov. 29–Dec. 11.

At its core, Queer As Funk was born from a desire to celebrate diversity, using music as a tool to spread that positivity throughout the community. As one of the few predominantly queer and non-binary bands in the province, their shows are not only dynamic and entertaining, but a powerful statement of pride and identity.
Throughout their ten-year history, Queer As Funk has been dedicated to visiting small communities to provide celebration and visibility to queer individuals looking to gather, connect, and strengthen their communities. They aim to inspire queer youth by offering themselves as models for living full, joyful lives as successful queer adults, and; as the band’s love for one another is palpable in performances, models for celebrating queer friendship, love, and chosen family.
Alongside their commitment to social justice, Queer As Funk has also earned a reputation as a powerful and entertaining band. Their tight horn arrangements, groovy rhythms, and powerful vocals have won over fans at music festivals and Pride events across Canada.
In a time when the queer and trans community is still facing discriminatory attitudes and policies, Queer As Funk remains a beacon of hope and inspiration.

The Friday Round Up
Oh, so much to do this week!
Tonight and tomorrow night, Friday and Saturday, you still have time to see Action at a Distance’s Wells Hill. Co-presented by DanceHouse, SFU Woodward’s Cultural Programs & SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts, Wells Hill features seven dancers who splice together themes of technology and communication in a new work based on the sweeping philosophies of Canadians Marshall McLuhan and Glenn Gould. The piece has been in the news this week - check out Janet Smith’s recent preview in the Georgia Straight, and Shawn Conner’s piece in the Vancouver Sun. Both have some great insights about the work from our homegrown Vancouver dancer/choreographer and Artistic Director of Action at a Distance, Vanessa Goodman. And if you want to hear Vanessa speak in person about her work, join us at the pre-show chat in the lobby of the theatre at 7:15pm. At the Milton Wong Experimental Theatre, SFU Gold Corp Centre for the Arts, SFU Woodwards 8pm. Tix

They will be screening a variety of films through DIV, a selection of commissions from the past two years of the festival; and also ongoing until Sunday check out Boombox Dances In Vancouver, with Blue Crush featuring Katie Lowen and Zahra Shahab in an investigation of organic and plastic skins that explore the ability to engulf, reveal, and conceal. For times and place of these and many other events go here.

If you are reading this before 4pm Friday November 24, make your way down to IndigeDIV, a dance and conversation series held on Indigenous Creative Territory, hosted by Raven Spirit Dance. The series brings artists, presenters and audiences together to discuss, share and witness how Indigenous artistic expression is a vital part of our community and it’s deeply rooted values are the foundation that can hold us all up. There is a circle under all that colonization built, RSD invites you to sit in these circles to listen and share. The evening starts with CONFLUENCE SCREENING from 4–430pm. Confluence is the gathering of Indigenous women in the rehearsal room and through the creative process we find meaningful connections to build scaffolding in which to hang our thoughts, desires and impulses as Indigenous dance artists. It will feature Collaborating Artists: Margaret Grenier, Jeanette Kotowich, Starr Muranko, Yvette Nolan, Michelle OlsonPicture, direction & edit by Ulla Laidlaw. Then from 4:30 to 6pm CONVERSATIONS: HOW YOU DO ANYTHING IS HOW YOU DO EVERYTHING - VALUE GUIDED PRACTICE, where we will consider what values does one hold in the creative process and how does that shape the outer expression of the work created? Artists will share how their values (personal/collective/cultural) influences the way in which they work and shapes their performances. Panelists are Yvette Nolan, Su-Feh Lee, Ulla Laidlaw, Yvonne Chartrand, moderated by Michelle Olson. At the VanCity Theatre, 1181 Seymour St, Vancouver. For more info.
On Saturday November 25, also as part of IndigeDIV, join Michelle Olson, Jeanette Kotowich, Olivia C. Davies, and Jessica McMann in Sharing: Works in Development. This is a sharing of works in progress by Vancouver Indigenous dance artists featuring Dynise Brisson, Olivia C. Davies, Margaret Grenier, Jeanette Kotowich, Jessica McMann and Michelle Olson. For more info. At KW Studios, 111 West Hastings St, Vancouver, 12-1pm for the public and 3-4pm for presenters. Space is limited so reserve your tickets here.
Tonight, Friday November 24, you can still catch plastic orchid factory in Digital Folk, a video game + costume party + music and dance performance + installation, built from the desire to revisit how communities gather to play music, dance and tell stories. It is an interdisciplinary collaboration between dance artist, James Gnam, visual artist, Natalie Purschwitz, lighting designer, James Proudfoot, sound designer, Kevin Legere and ten dance artists that explores a generation’s approach to identity, physicality, social dance and performance. Digital Folks lives as a scale model built out of an in-between world that is not quite a home and not quite a theatre. Where the desire for music, dance and community is focused through the lens of video game culture and technology. Check out the video here. There are two shows, 9 and 10pm, and prepare to spend the evening with a cash bar and a post-show party from 10:45pm! At Left of Main, 211 Keefer St. Get your tix here.
We told you last week about DIY@DIV, presented by Mutable Subject. DIY@DIV have a whole bunch of things happening over the weekend, but if you have not had enough dance by Sunday morning, join artists Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg, Daisy Thompson+ Lexi Vajda for a breakfast showing of new works. At Left of Main, 211 Keefer St and the show is FREE! This is definitely worth getting yourself out of bed for!
Company 605 In Circulation
On until Saturday November 25, Shadbolt Centre for the Arts presents Company 605 In Circulation, a mixed program of Company 605’s current repertoire, consisting of excerpts from two recent full-length works, Albatross and Vital Few, as well as the premiere of a brand new short piece. Each of these distinct works circle around the same current interests of 605’s artists: individuals united, a shared experience held between separate bodies, and moving as one. At the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, 6450 Deer Lake Ave., Burnaby. Tix
November 22-25 & November 29 - December 2, Henry Daniel’s nómadas, an audio/video installation and live performance that takes inspiration from the current large-scale movements of bodies across international spaces. This complex, ongoing pattern of movement can be seen as a type of chaotic transnational choreography. nómadas comes out of Daniel’s larger, long term Contemporary Nomads research project, which explores the “deep fragmentation which exists between communities within as well as outside national borders, between nationalized and personalized bodies, and between social and political institutions and the ordinary people they were meant to serve."The production features the collaborative work of guest artists Adam Basanta (Music), Sammy and Shanghan Chien (Media Design), and Alan Sorey(Set Design). Again, at the Djavad Mowafaghian World Art Centre, Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, SFU Woodwards. Performance: 8:00 PM Free Audio/Video installation: 6:00-7:30 PM on performance days
And for something completely different and a great way to come down after all that DIV action, on Tuesday November 28 check out Dancing Dialogues between Body and Soul: An Exploration on Expressive Dance for Women. Join a community of women exploring the connection between body and soul through expressive dance for a more joyful integrated life, led by Maria Carbonetti. For more info, time and place.
And remember, we can’t share your stuff with the dance community if you don’t share it with us first! Send your news, events and other interesting goings on to [email protected]. Thanks, and have a wonderful week!

I’ve known Jonathan and Carla for quite a few years now. After doing some amazing things with the Salvation Army and its’ War College, they planted a church called Boundless in Vancouver. They’re super cool and so are their kids. While it was a frigid photosession it was a great getting to see them again- the kids growing up as fast as ever!

Robert Lepage
Επτά χρόνια μετά το The Far Side of the Moon, την ημι-αυτοβιογραφική sci-fi ελεγεία του, με την οποία η Στέγη σύστησε στο ελληνικό κοινό τον Ρομπέρ Λεπάζ (γενν.

Μερικοί από τους χαρακτηρισμούς που έχει λάβει ο Λεπάζ είναι οι εξής: «μαέστρος του σύγχρονου multimedia θεάτρου» (Le Monde), «αδιανόητα χαρισματικός σκηνοθέτης» (The New York Times), «διεθνής δύναμη» (The Guardian).

DanceHouse Premieres Dada Masilo’s The Sacrifice and Reveals 2023/24 Season
As DanceHouse announces its 2023-2024 season including six exciting performance, it readies for the final presentation in its 15th Anniversary season. DanceHouse presents the exhilarating North American premiere of Dada Masilo’s The Sacrifice, May 5 and 6, 2023 at 8pm at the Vancouver Playhouse. Inspired by Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite Of Spring, South Africa’s award-winning choreographer Masilo roots her powerful rendition in the rituals, rhythms, and sounds of Botswana. Together, the cast of ten dancers and four musicians interacts to explore the intricate symbiosis of community, sacrifice, and renewal in a riveting fusion of Tswana, the traditional dance of Botswana, and contemporary dance performed to a live original score.
Dada Masilo's The Sacrifice Dance Factory Johannesburg 30 June 2021 Photograph: John Hogg “We’re thrilled to introduce Vancouver audiences to Dada Masilo’s innovative and intoxicating vision in The Sacrifice,” says Jim Smith, Artistic and Executive Director of DanceHouse. “Masilo combines the European heritage of The Rite of Spring with the uniquely rhythmic and expressive movements of Tswana to examine the universal cry of sacrifice for the greater good, and the need to give back to help something grow. It is a timely call to all of us.” Vancouver is the first North American stop in the highly acclaimed international tour of The Sacrifice. Following its DanceHouse performances, the production continues to Ottawa, Toronto, and the United States. Dada Masilo (South Africa), The Sacrifice, runs May 5 and 6, 2023 at 8pm at the Vancouver Playhouse, 600 Hamiliton. Matt and Mara (dir. Kazik Radwanski) x VIFF 2024.
It would easy to watch many more lo-fi stories about the film's eponymous college pals (played effortlessly by Deragh Campbell and Matt Johnson) and their everyday lives on the periphery of the Toronto literary scene. Imagine a millennial version of something like Before Sunset without the awareness or romance of Before Sunsrise preceeding it and you have a light but engrossing exploration of mid-career malaise that's enticingly interesting.
Screening at the 2024 Vancouver International Film Festival as part of the Showcase series at SFU Woodward’s on Sept. 28 and International Village on Sept. 29.
Screening at The Cinematheque from Nov. 2–10.

The Friday Round Up
Happy Friday - enjoy the sunshine! And the dance!!
November 24 -26 (preview November 23) DanceHouse is thrilled to present Vancouver’s own Action at a Distance in Wells Hill. Three years in the making, Vancouver’s Vanessa Goodman brings the world premiere of Wells Hill to the DanceHouse stage. Seven exceptional dancers splice themes of technology and communication into this intriguing and provocative new work based on the sweeping philosophies of Marshall McLuhan and Glenn Gould. These two Canadian luminaries altered how we consume art and information, and their prescient ideas provide an engaging framework for an exciting, immersive performance that is both visceral and cerebral. Check out a video of the piece here. Please note that this performance will take place at Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre, SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, SFU Woodwards, November 23 - 25 8pm and November 26 2pm. Tix.

TheCommentary.ca: The author and activist Cory Doctorow discusses his new book Walkaway (Tor Books, 2017), writing, and more, with Joseph Planta
I am Planta: On the Line, in Vancouver, at TheCommentary.ca.
Cory Doctorow joins me now. He has just published his latest novel, Walkaway. It is described as an epic tale of revolution, love, post-scarcity and the end of death. I’ll get him to tell us about this book which has already gotten terrific notices. In the book, we see the three main characters walk away from the clutches of a broken down modern society. It takes place sometime in the very near future, where wealth is concentrated and in the hands of the very few, and the less fortunate scrape by in desolate cities that have been gutted by industrial flight. Cory Doctorow is co-editor of Boing Boing, and a columnist for the Guardian, Publishers Weekly, and Locus. His previous books include the New York Times bestseller Little Brother, as well as many award-winning novels and works of non fiction. Visit www.craphound.com for more information. The Twitter handle is @doctorow. Cory will be in Vancouver as part of a special event with the Vancouver Writers Fest tonight, 17 May 2017. That’s at SFU Woodwards, where Cory will be in conversation with our old friend Sean Cranbury. Go to www.writersfest.bc.ca for tickets and information. Walkaway is published by Tor Books. Please welcome to the Planta: On the Line program, Cory Doctorow; Mr. Doctorow, good morning.
