Stratford Reflections 2024
This season at the Stratford Festival was rewarding with some stunning productions & one clunker. The stunning were the ecstatic Something Rotten!, hilarious London Assurance & the brutal The Goat. The clunker was Hedda Gabler. Even a disappointing show at Stratford isn’t such a bad thing as it reminds me what I do like & why. The weather for our drives to & from Stratford was good this year…

-> Atriste masculin de l'année
-> Artiste féminine de l'année
-> Chanson de l'année

this is a very general question and feel free to ignore me ofc if you already answered this but do you have any fave opera production?
Hi! Sorry for taking so long to respond to your question, especially because the answer isn't even that complicated lol.
Of course there are productions I like more and those I like less but I wouldn't say I have a definitive fave. I tend to enjoy most Franco Zeffirelli productions (and I'm including his opera films too because why not). Like, I don't care about Don Giovanni that much for example, but I do watch his productions - recordings from the Met 1991 and 2000 if I'm not mistaken - because I think they're fun and Get the opera. I wouldn't be true to one of my biggest interests if I didn't mention Nicholas Hytner's production of Don Carlo (Royal Opera House 2008/Met 2010) bc I think it does interesting things with Philip which is v important to me. I also remember watching Robert Lepage's productions of Wagner's Ring Cycle and La Damnation de Faust by Berlioz and being fascinated because he did interesting things with a huge moving stage lol. Speaking of the Ring Cycle, Patrice Chéreau's production at Bayreuth has been on my radar for some time now because a beloved friend liveblogged some of it to me and it seems fascinating.
This is all that comes to mind rn but if you're curious about productions of any particular opera feel free to ask! I'll try to respond as best as I can. And sorry for giving most examples from the Met, I basically lived off of their streams in 2020-2021, so naturally I'm most familiar with their productions of most operas lmao
#responses#anonymous#there are many more that i enjoy of course i just couldn't possibly list them all

Artist and designer Es Devlin awarded Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at MIT
New Post has been published on https://sunalei.org/news/artist-and-designer-es-devlin-awarded-eugene-mcdermott-award-in-the-arts-at-mit/
Artist and designer Es Devlin awarded Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at MIT
Artist and designer Es Devlin is the recipient of the 2025 Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at MIT. The $100,000 prize, to be awarded at a gala in her honor, also includes an artist residency at MIT in spring 2025, during which Es Devlin will present her work in a lecture open to the public on May 1, 2025.
Devlin’s work explores biodiversity, linguistic diversity, and collective AI-generated poetry, all areas that also are being explored within the MIT community. She is known for public art and installations at major museums such as the Tate Modern, kinetic stage designs for the Metropolitan Opera, the Super Bowl, and the Olympics, as well as monumental stage sculptures for large-scale stadium concerts.
“I am always most energized by works I have not yet made, so I am immensely grateful to have this trust and investment in ideas I’ve yet to conceive,” says Devlin. “I’m honored to receive an award that has been granted to so many of my heroes, and look forward to collaborating closely with the brilliant minds at MIT.”

2025 McDermott Announcement Video: Arts at MIT
“We look forward to presenting Es Devlin with MIT’s highest award in the arts. Her work will be an inspiration for our students studying the visual arts, theater, media, and design. Her interest in AI and the arts dovetails with a major initiative at MIT to address the societal impact of GenAI [generative artificial intelligence],” says MIT vice provost and Ford International Professor of History Philip S. Khoury. “With a new performing arts center opening this winter and a campus-wide arts festival taking place this spring, there could not be a better moment to expose MIT’s creative community to Es Devlin’s extraordinary artistic practice.”
The Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at MIT recognizes innovative artists working in any field or cross-disciplinary activity. The $100,000 prize represents an investment in the recipient’s future creative work, rather than a prize for a particular project or lifetime of achievement. The official announcement was made at the Council for the Arts at MIT’s 51st annual meeting on Oct. 24. Since it was established in 1974, the award has been bestowed upon 38 individuals who work in performing, visual, and media arts, as well as authors, art historians, and patrons of the arts. Past recipients include Santiago Calatrava, Gustavo Dudamel, Olafur Eliasson, Robert Lepage, Audra McDonald, Suzan-Lori Parks, Bill Viola, and Pamela Z, among others.
A distinctive feature of the award is a short residency at MIT, which includes a public presentation of the artist’s work, substantial interaction with students and faculty, and a gala that convenes national and international leaders in the arts. The goal of the residency is to provide the recipient with unparalleled access to the creative energy and cutting-edge research at the Institute and to develop mutually enlightening relationships in the MIT community.
The Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at MIT was established in 1974 by Margaret McDermott (1912-2018) in honor of her husband, Eugene McDermott (1899-1973), a co-founder of Texas Instruments and longtime friend and benefactor of MIT. The award is presented by the Council for the Arts at MIT.
The award is bestowed upon individuals whose artistic trajectory and body of work have achieved the highest distinction in their field and indicate they will remain leaders for years to come. The McDermott Award reflects MIT’s commitment to risk-taking, problem-solving, and connecting creative minds across disciplines.
Es Devlin, born in London in 1971, views an audience as a temporary society and often invites public participation in communal choral works. Her canvas ranges from public sculptures and installations at Tate Modern, V&A, Serpentine, Imperial War Museum, and Lincoln Center, to kinetic stage designs at the Royal Opera House, the National Theatre, and the Metropolitan Opera, as well as Olympic ceremonies, Super Bowl halftime shows, and monumental illuminated stage sculptures for large-scale stadium concerts.
Devlin is the subject of a major monographic book, “An Atlas of Es Devlin,” described by Thames and Hudson as their most intricate and sculptural publication to date, and a retrospective exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. In 2020, she became the first female architect of the U.K. Pavilion at a World Expo, conceiving a building which used AI to co-author poetry with visitors on its 20-meter diameter facade. Her practice was the subject of the 2015 Netflix documentary series “Abstract: The Art of Design.” She is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, University of the Arts London, and a Royal Designer for Industry at the Royal Society of Arts. She has been awarded the London Design Medal, three Olivier Awards, a Tony Award, an Ivor Novello Award, doctorates from the Universities of Bristol and Kent, and a Commander of the Order of the British Empire award.

These cases were all decided by a unanimous Court, with Justices Jackson, Sotomayor, and Roberts authoring the three opinions. Supreme Court Considers Arbitrability Based on Conflicting…

1 - Gesamtkunstwerk
Definition of Gesamtkunstwerk
Richard Wagner's idea of Gesamtkunstwerk, or "total work of art," aimed to bring together all art forms—music, poetry, drama, and dance—into a single, unified piece. He believed that ancient Greek art achieved this harmony but it was lost over time. Wagner wanted to restore this harmony in his operas. He criticized traditional operas for being disjointed, with music and action poorly connected. Instead, he wanted music, drama, and other elements to work together seamlessly. Wagner used recurring musical themes, called ‘leitmotifs,’ to tie characters and situations together emotionally.Wagner's concept influenced many later artists and movements, like the Arts and Crafts Movement, the Wiener Werkstätte, and the Bauhaus. These groups aimed to create unified artistic environments, reflecting his idea of Gesamtkunstwerk. (Wolfman, 2013)
In the late 20th century, computers began playing a big role in live theater, dance, and performance. Innovators like Robert Lepage and Laurie Anderson used digital screens and interactive technologies to create new kinds of shows. They blended theater with videoconferencing, webcams, and virtual environments. These innovations influenced both digital performance and video games. Today, these technologies continue to reshape how we create and experience art, blurring the lines between different artistic disciplines and reaching wider audiences through the internet.
(Dixon, 2007)
Videogames as art
The debate surrounding whether video games qualify as art revolves around legal recognition and philosophical inquiry. Legally, video games are protected as creative works, yet their status as art remains contentious. Historically, museums have begun to exhibit video games as artistic works, while the emergence of "art games" designed for expressive purposes has furthered their artistic credibility. However, critics such as Roger Ebert argue against classifying video games as art due to their interactive and goal-oriented nature, which they contend deviates from traditional art forms. This ongoing debate reflects broader questions about art's definition in the digital era and the impact of interactivity on artistic expression.
Analysis
In my opinion, modern video games can be seen as total works of art, blending narrative, music, visual art, and interactive gameplay to create immersive experiences. This aligns with Richard Wagner's vision of gesamtkunstwerk, which aims to unify all art forms into a cohesive whole.
For example, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt incorporates elements of ancient Polish folklore using detailed 3D assets, music, and storytelling. The game’s rich and detailed world allows players to explore a vibrant landscape that feels both fantastical and culturally authentic. The music enhances the atmosphere, adding emotional depth to the player's journey.
The Witcher 3's storytelling stands out for its complexity and depth, inviting players to make choices that influence the narrative and lead to different outcomes. This interactivity surpasses traditional art forms, as players shape the game's course, creating a personalized and dynamic experience, and enhancing the immersion.
The Witcher 3 engages players intellectually, emotionally, and physically, making them active participants rather than passive observers. This level of engagement creates a profound and lasting impact.
In conclusion, i think games like The Witcher 3 embody gesamtkunstwerk by integrating various artistic elements into an immersive experience. They show how modern technology can realize Wagner’s vision, creating total works of art that engage and captivate players in unique ways. The interactivity and narrative depth of these games add new dimensions to the artistic experience, making them a powerful medium for storytelling and cultural expression.
youtube
Understanding gesamtkunstwerk expanded my view of art. It made me reconsider my work. As a 3D character artist, crafting a character involves blending various art forms like painting and sculpting. I believe with my expanded perspective my artwork will be more interesting and eye-catching in the future.
