The perfect gift for fans of Octavia Butler, gift yourself or a fellow fan this must-have boxed set featuring the Nebula-prize nominees ‘Parable of the Sower’ and ‘Parable of the Talents, which together tell the near-future odyssey of Lauren Olamina, a hyperempathic young woman who is twice as feeling in a world that has become doubly dehumanized. In Sower, the place is California, where small walled communities protect from hordes of desperate scavengers and roaming bands of people addicts. Lauren sets off on foot along the dangerous coastal highways, moving north into the unknown. The book has an introduction by feminist, journalist, activist, and author @gloriasteinem.

So in researching the different artists commissioned for Butler's cover art, I came across a post from just this past February announcing a new set of covers for (my favorites) Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents, illustrated by Paul Lewin (@PaulLewinArt) for a reprint by Seven Stories Press. What's funny is that just a month before that post, in January, I'd come across Lewin's work for the very first time when I visited his exhibition at the Betti Ono gallery (@BettiOno) in Oakland, California. Lewin's work is so striking and, like Butler's novels, his art manages to be both commanding and, simultaneously, inviting. I've got so much appreciation for whomever at Seven Stories Press had vision enough -understands both Butler's and Lewin's work enough- to set them to task together. I've been meaning to buy myself copies of 'Sower' and 'Talents' since the ones I read years ago were library copies...guess I know which versions I'll be treating myself to!!! Also, sidenote: for his Butler covers, Lewin chose his paintings "The Offering", for Parable of the Sower and "Emergence" as the cover for Parable of the Talents. I'm not sure if this was intentional but both of these paintings depict figures, women, in profile- specifically left facing profiles. Something I noticed in preparing my second post about the Butler covers was that a good deal of them feature figures in profile (go back and see what I'm talm bout)- but almost all of them right facing. I wonder if that was an intentional move on the part of Lewin and Seven Stories Press, to create some continuity with the previous covers???? ........More on Lewin's work to come! >>> pictures in this post taken from @7storiespress and Lewin's website <<< . . . #blackradicalmuseumenthusiasm #blackradicalME #OctaviaButler #PaulLewin #SevenStoriesPress #ParableoftheSower #ParableoftheTalents #AvaDuvernay #Dawn #StayWokeLoveArt

“DIY Resistance: 32 Ways To Fight Back” by Anthony Alvarado is in stores now!
Thanks to Anthony for allowing me to be apart this project and contribute an illustration of Harvey Milk.
The book “celebrates the power of the individual and shows how the reader can take inspiration from the actions and words of leaders, activists, and historical heroes, how we can learn to take care of ourselves physically and emotionally in troubled times, and do our part to look after the larger community around us. Our fight is not a new one. It has been going on continuously for thousands of years, as individuals and movements have stood up to despots and demagogues. DIY Resistance recalls the successful actions through which people's movements have defeated tyrants throughout history: Defend free speech, look after your community, know your rights, fight racism and misogyny, organize, protest, network, publish. The lessons of successful resistance are rich and they are everywhere around us. Take note, find your inspiration and your strength, join others around you who share your commitment.”

"Just like eggs and just like sperm, some bodies have a uterus and some bodies do not. Every body that has a uterus always has it in the same place, just below the belly button, in the squishy middle part." From "What Makes A Baby" by Cory Silverberg and Fiona Smyth. Got these pictures today and they made me really happy. Here is The Story of the Blue Planet - a production performed mostly by children in Neyriz, a small town in the southern part of Iran. Wish I was there to see it!
