"Well..." "My answer?" "Yes." They nodded. "Many things actually. But if we don't let go of each other, we'll grow strong!" ~•~•~•~•~•~ Secondary School. To some it was hell, to some it was home. To some, it was a place to catch cruise and live your best life. To some it was a place where you ruled, where you were the main man at the top of the food chain. To some it was a place to hide under a faade. To some it was a place that determined what the future held. But to all, it was a place that brought challenges - physical and emotional. A place that brought self-discovery; a place that exposed the secret and the reality of life. Final year at River Brook Academy had finally come - basically what every secondary school student looked forward to. Suffice it to say, that it wasn't half as normal as the other years they'd spent. It came with whirlwinds, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes...but what happens when Ore Jumai, Ayo Balogun, Bolu Jayeola, Nina Ogbeide and their friends all learn what they truly needed? Would they be able to take it and stand? Or would they leave it and fall to the ground? ****** 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒆𝒅: 24𝒕𝒉 𝑫𝒆𝒄𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 2020 𝑭𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒅: #1in seatmate. #1 in identicaltwins #1 in finalyear #1 in secondaryschool #1 in pidgin #1 in nigerianstories Cover design by Donald Prince✨✨

Pet by Akwaeke Emezi Imagine a world where systemic racism, classism, sexism, and queerphobia have been eradicated by a revolution, where "angels" (human revolutionaries) overcame all "monsters" who harmed others and violated their human rights, where children are warmly nurtured and their gender expression is unconditionally supported. This is the utopia in which teen girl Jam lives with her loving parents. When an encounter with one of her artist mother's paintings births an otherworldly creature, however, who insists monsters like those of her parents' past are still real, Jam must question everything she thinks she knows - especially when the monster is living in the house of her best friend. This book is nothing short of brilliant. The world it paints evokes a fierce longing, as we are so far from the kind of utopia Emezi portrays, especially in the midst of today's vast inequality and horrors - but it is written so as to seem probable, rising naturally (but not without immense struggle) from the protests and antiracist work so many are doing right now. But even in such a world, it is vital to remain vigilant - because thinking of one's world as a utopia, with no faults, can cloak hidden horrors. "The first step to seeing is realizing there are things you do not see," says the novel's strange guardian (a statement which could apply to those only just discovering unconscious biases and systemic racism today) and Jam finds out just how true that is. Her friend's large, beautiful family looks perfect - but a child is in danger, and Jam must overcome her and others' rosy blindness to save them. Read this book - you won't regret it! #speculativefiction #utopia #nigerianauthors #weneeddiversebooks #diversebooks #blackauthors #transteen #queerbooks #blackbooksmatter #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CI_-kqNB4xv/?igshid=19qrjq1nua3ua

Last Tuesday 9/6 was such an amazing pub day! I am so excited about so many of the late 2022 books that have been coming out because the stories sound incredible. The Attic Child by Lola Jaye is out now this story is sure to keep you captivated until the very end. Can we talk about how gorgeous this cover is? Thank you @williammorrowbooks and @bibliolifestyle for the gifted copy. QOTD: Do you enjoy stories about family secrets? Which one do you recommend? 💥SYNOPSIS💥 A hauntingly powerful and emotionally charged novel about family secrets, love and loss, identity and belonging. Two children trapped in the same attic, almost a century apart, bound by a shared secret. Early 1900s London: Taken from his homeland, twelve-year-old Celestine spends most of the time locked away in the attic of a large house by the sea. The only time Celestine isn’t bound by confines of the small space is when he is acting as an unpaid servant to English explorer Sir Richard Babbington, As the years pass, he desperately clings on to memories of his family in Africa, even as he struggles to remember his mother’s face, and sometimes his real name . . . 1974: Lowra, a young orphan girl born into wealth and privilege whose fortunes have now changed, finds herself trapped in the same attic. Searching for a ray of light in the darkness of the attic, Lowra finds under the floorboards an old-fashioned pen, a porcelain doll, a beaded necklace, and a message carved on the wall, written in an unidentifiable language. Providing comfort for her when all hope is lost, these clues will lead her to uncover the secrets of the attic. #TheAtticChild #LolaJaye #books #bookstagram #bookstagrammers #20booksbyblackwomen #bookish #bookcommunity #reading #TBR #bookphotograph #Nigerianauthor #Africanliterature #fiction #secrets #historicalfiction #literature #libros #BlackBookstagram #BlackAuthor #readersofinstagram #bookworm (at The Bushwick Collective) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiY6AyKr2md/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Omoshalewa 👇 Their orders arrived and they began to eat. Tunde was almost done with his meal when he spoke up. “Shalewa, why are you keeping me in suspense? What’s the problem?” Shalewa dropped her fork and looked at him. “Well, I had no intention of spoiling your dinner; that’s why I decided to hold on till you were done.” “I’m all ears.” He said; looking at his plate as he tried to cut a piece of chicken. “I need a break.” Tunde put the piece of chicken in his mouth as he nodded, looking up at Shalewa. “A break? Why don’t you discuss with your dad. He may give you some time off.” “That’s not what I mean, Tunde. I wasn’t referring to work. I mean a break from this relationship.” Tunde’s eyes widened. He dropped his cutlery gently and took a sip of his drink. “A break from me?” “Well, if you would rather put it that way.” “Our wedding is in a few weeks.” “I am aware of that. The more reason why I need a break.” Shalewa said as she looked at him straight-faced. “But…but Shalewa, what went wrong?” “I just need to sort out my feelings.” “I thought we were past this.” “No, we weren’t. We never were.” Tunde was confused. “But you agreed to marry me?” “To satisfy you and my dad. Have you forgotten so soon?” Tunde pushed his half-eaten plate of chicken aside and held Shalewa’s hands on the table. “Please don’t do this to us. I love you.” Shalewa pulled her hands from his grip. “Tunde, don’t make this more difficult than it already is. I can’t continue to live a lie. . .
