Mort’s 2024 summer open studio titled BEYOND MY WINDOW is unique as he is sharing his lifelong fascination with illuminated multimedia 3D art creations. The primary focus of this limited collection of only twelve multimedia collage constructions is an original watercolor painting presented or “viewed” from the interior standpoint of a room via the perspective of a window.
Mort’s artwork is in many prominent collections including the Smithsonian, National Gallery of Art, Boston Museum of Science, Delaware Art Museum, Farnsworth Museum, Academy Art Museum, Portland Museum of Art, Brandywine River Museum and the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum. His works have been selected for many public space venues. He has been honored to participate in the United States Department of State’s Art in Embassies program. Mort strongly believes in the ideals of cultural diplomacy and recently had paintings displayed at The White House as part of this program. Mort’s artwork has been exhibited in over one hundred museum and gallery shows around the world. Recent museum shows include “Lunar Attractions” at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA and “Starry Skies of Art” at the Serlachius Museum in Mänttä, Finland and The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore Maryland.
Deeply fascinated with astronomy and the universe Mort’s life-long interest in science is frequently reflected in his artwork. He has been
a commissioned NASA artist since 1983 and serves on the board of the Lowell Observatory. In 2010 his painting “ZERO-G Apples” was one of six paintings juried into “The First Art Show in Space” aboard the International Space Station. A skilled astro-photographer and telescope builder Mort is a sought-after speaker on the intersection of art and science.
Throughout his career Mort has recognized the power of imagery and used his art to share his passion of promoting environmental awareness. In 2007 he established The Art of Stewardship Project, his family foundation that supports and inspires ecological consciousness through the arts. The Art of Stewardship Project works with arts and educational organizations to build partnerships and collaborations reinforcing the artist’s role in preserving our fragile Earth. Leading
by example Mort is a Clinton Global Initiative Partner offering his artwork to support the goals of Circle of Blue the international educational organization focused on preserving the Earths fresh water.

Round One - Set 113

Left: Old woman in her sickbed 1895-1896 by Maria Wiik
Description: painting of an old woman laying on their back, hands folded over their stomach. They look tired.
Propaganda: Looking at it makes my heart ache.
Old woman in her sickbed 1895-1896 by Maria Wiik. Pastel on paper. The art is at the Gösta Serlachius Fine Arts Foundation (link to the art here).
Right: The Seamstress (The Working Woman) 1905 by Helene Schjerfbeck
Description: painting of a woman sitting in a rocking chair with her hands folded in her lap, her eyes are downcast. A scissor hangs from her belt on a ribbon.
Propaganda: right of the bat it remainds me of "Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (colloquial known as Portrait of Artist's Mother)" by James McNeill Whistler because of the simelar composition and color scheme, but this one has a warmer feeling for me, despite the even more spatanian background and dress.
The Seamstress (The Working Woman) 1905 by Helene Schjerfbeck. Oil on canvas. The art is 95,5 × 84,5 cm. The art is in the Finnish National Gallery (link to the art here). The art was photographed by Hannu Aaltonen

So during the week-end we went also to Serlachius museums.
they had some videoart and photography that was maybe important for their makers but as I have nothing good to say about Brotherus et al it is better to just warn people that you will never get that time back of your one-time existence.
But Salvador Dali was great! Never knew extent of his ink works. Dali’s gala was pretty nice:

And they had take a Dali selfie so naturally:

but the real true meat was conceptual project , It’s About Time by belgian Koen Vanmechelen that had among others live chicken and roosters and hairy pigs.
And his multiethnic workings of Medusa....

See the peacock bodied glass skulled creatures in a circle behind there? Part of building a new alien(among other things breeding live chicken) as the beast never dies it just remains dormant in us all.
His T-Rex was really nice too

So it is a bronze chicken leg? Yes, yess it is. Why did you like it? Well I think you fail to see the size and positioning of it...

yeah
bow down to our future chicken overlords

There was plenty of old masters too and in the Pleasure exhibition (did not quite live up to it’s name sadly) there was interactive fun to be had too. In form of make-your-own-still-life with flowers and greenery and all things bright.
So we did one each.
Hers:

and mine:

(no, they did NOT have a real knife in the museum. I did as I do anyhow anywhere)
But those are heartily recommended if for some reason one goes to those museums
