how do you think grima would act towards the summoner's child, if they had one from a previous relationship and they were summoned to askr?
I have spent pretty much all day thinking about this
Because do you have any idea how many variables are inherent in this question good gods there are so many little bits and pieces that have such a huge impact on the answer here
I literally have to cut this for length because I’m going to have to go through all of them because this is absolutely fascinating
Okay so the thing to know about Grima is that in spite of how he’s such a big scary dragon he has champion-level parental instincts. If you put him around a child he is going to take care of them. It doesn’t matter if they’re dragons or not (though most of the really young kids have been dragons – he has a soft spot for the Morgans, but they’re teenagers and don’t need babying). My personal Summoners don’t have kids (or even pets), and they were frankly miserable in their world, so coming to Askr was a breath of fresh air that allowed them to grow into their own. All of this becomes a huge what-if in this case because it means that the Kiran in question is an entirely different entity and some very important aspects of their relationship with Grima have to be addressed.
First and foremost: What is the Summoner’s relationship with their child? Are they close? Are they estranged? Has Kiran had to give up custody for whatever reason? Do they love their child in spite of the difficulties? Do they think about them, talk about them, fight to return to them? Or are they of the opinion that their child is better off without them? Kids are important to Grima: if he knows that Kiran has a child, he’ll do everything he can to ensure that the Summoner can get back as soon as possible so that their kid isn’t robbed of a parent. If Kiran says nothing about their child before their sudden appearance, it would be a major blow to the relationship: the Summoner’s silence about such an important aspect of their life would imply to Grima that they don’t care about their child or their mental well-being, and it would take some real work to repair that, even if the Fell Dragon’s mistaken.
Next question: how old is the Summoner’s child? Are they just a tiny thing, newborn to maybe two? Are they in those exploratory years, three to five? Are they in their impressionable youth, six to pre-teen? Are they in those stressful teenage years? Grima’s protective nature is significantly more active with younger kids (evidenced by how he’s always very attentive to Fae and the Kanas but gives Nowi and Myrrh more independence), so the age of the Summoner’s child plays a big part in how he would act with them, ranging from gentle and attentive to encouraging and supportive.
Also, what’s their personality like? Are they bubbly and outgoing? Sullen and moody? Timid and reserved? Haughty and rude? While Grima would be more lenient with a younger child showing some less than pleasant personality traits, he’d also work to change them when he happens to see them – gently, if firmly. Older kids and teenagers get much less leeway, and especially if the Summoner is a kind and supportive parent dealing with a child who treats them unfairly, Grima will not hesitate to take the kid aside and dress them down for their behavior.
In general, though, assuming that Kiran has been open about the fact that they’re a parent with a child, Grima would be overall concerned by the fact that their child has appeared (mostly because the Summoner can’t even take care of themselves in this war, and now here’s a similarly helpless and also significantly younger version of them in need of defense and support), but would ultimately prove more protective of the kid than he is of even Kiran, and would do his best to support them as they settle and find their place in Askr as the Summoner has.

Missives of Appalling Idiocy and Envy Embarrassing to Behold
So many messages of the type alluded to by the title of this article crossed my desk in the last fortnight that I found myself in the rare position of having too much content to easily record and communicate with pen and paper—a writer’s dream, if that content did not also simultaneously indicate both the tolling of the proverbial bell, and the fact that I am one of those for whom the death knell sounds.
I have observed the colleges and universities of the Western world devour themselves in a myriad of fatal errors over the last two decades, and take little pleasure in seeing what I knew was inevitably coming manifest itself in an increasingly comprehensive manner. It is of course a self-destructive and unfortunate tendency of human reason, with all its limitations—as well as ego, with all its pretensions—to wish or otherwise agree to serve as Cassandra, and to derive a certain satisfaction in watching the ship whose demise was foretold breach its hull on rocks hidden from all other observers. The self-righteous pleasure of “I told you so,” is, however, of little comfort when the icy water wends its way around ankle, knee and thigh, threatening to swamp everything still retaining its incalculable and unlikely value, even if it simultaneously makes short shrift of the ignorance and willful blindness that is frequently part and parcel of the death of something once great.
It is also necessary to note that the catastrophic failures of process and aim which I am about to relate were by no means hidden from the public view by the persons and institutions in question. They were instead positively trumpeted to all by multiple attempts to harness the powers of social media and announced, more traditionally, in press releases designed to indicate the success of some great and laudable moral striving. It is nothing less than a dire day when the proud revelation of vices of deadly and multifarious seriousness serve to substitute for announcements of genuine and valuable achievement, but that is where we are at—make no mistake about it.
The first story emerges at Brock University, in combination with the scientific journal Angewandte Chemie—the former an educational institution of moderate reputability; the latter a prestigious place of scientific publication among chemists. It is no easy matter to find a permanent tenured faculty position at such a university, or to publish research findings or literature reviews/summaries in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. The process generally requires several years and multiple resubmissions and rounds of editing by a minimum of three colleagues per submission with expertise in the field as well as approval by the editor. Angewandte has a rejection rate of 80%—and it should be noted that that rejection rate only takes into account papers that the submitting researcher felt were of sufficient quality to be considered by a journal of high standards. Dr. Tomas Hudlicky of Brock submitted an essay memorializing and updating a piece written thirty years ago, which has been widely recognized as powerfully influencing the direction of the chemistry subfield in question (organic synthesis).
Now, the first thing that must be understood about Dr. Hudlicky is that he holds a prestigious Canada Research Chair, a position funded by part of a large federal initiative devoting approximately 300 million dollars per year in the attempt to attract to Canada (or to encourage to stay in Canada) researchers who are of particular promise, as evidenced most fundamentally by their research productivity. That promise or productivity, in turn, can be measured with reasonable accuracy with metrics such as number of peer-reviewed articles in relevant scientific journals (more than 400 in Hudlicky’s case), by noting how many times such articles are cited by other authors over the years subsequent to publication (Hudlicky: 13300) and, finally, by a metric known as the h-index, which provides a measure of how many publications have received a variable minimum number of citations (and which therefore combines in a single number some information about publications per se and some about citations). A researcher with an h-index of 10 has published 10 papers with 10 or more citations; a researcher with an h-index of 57 (Hudlicky’s score) has published 57 papers with 57 or more citations. Hudlicky’s research productivity is admirable and rare. The mere fact that he was hired as a Canada Research Chair meant that his department, as well as the federal governmental agency tasked with funding the attraction or retention of extreme talent, both determined in the relatively recent past that he was a fish well worth landing. Something about this needs to be clarified: the universities that hire those researchers competent enough to be competitive in a Canada Research Chair competition are not doing them a favor by offering them a position; rather, it is an honor for the university (and the students, both undergraduate and graduate, that attend the institution) to be chosen by the researcher in question. No serious academic disputes this, although some may quibble about the precise metrics used for identification of the serious talent. This is particularly true of an institution such as Brock, which is an university of reasonable but not exceptional quality, and which genuinely needs highly productive faculty members to help it ratchet itself up the very competitive academic ladder.
Hudlicky’s paper in Angewandte Chemie was peer-reviewed positively, judged as desirable by the relevant editorial staff, and published. This meant that it managed the difficult job of passing through the eye of a needle, and entering the kingdom of heaven, at least as far as research chemists might be concerned. But some of Dr. Hudlicky’s surmises with regard to the discipline of organic synthesis raised the ire of a Twitter mob (https://twitter.com/fxcoudert/status/1268920299833233416?s=20). This is not a difficult feat, in my opinion, as Twitter seems to exist primarily for the purpose of generating mobs—composed primarily of individuals who are hungry for the opportunity to taste blood and bask in the joys of reasonably risk-free reputation destruction, revenge and self-righteousness. Furthermore, as far as Twitter mobs go, those who complained about the Angewandte Chemie publication were not particularly numerous. No matter: once the complaints emerged, the editor of the journal in charge of Dr. Hudlicky’s work—one Dr. Neville Compton—removed the paper from the journal’s website, and offered an abject apology for daring to have published it in the first place. Furthermore, he reported the “suspension” of two of the journal’s editors (indicating precisely how much trust those individuals should have placed initially in his judgement) and cast aspersions on Hudlicky’s ethics, stating that his essay did not properly reflect fairness, trustworthiness and social awareness, while implying that the now-pilloried author and his peer reviewers and editors were discriminatory, unjust and inequitable in practice. It should be noted, by the way, that the position of editor for a scientific journal is general one filled by volunteers, who donate their time for the greater good of the scientific enterprise, rather than for any monetary gain. So Compton fired generous volunteers to ensure that his good name would not be irredeemably sullied by any association with the now-demonized professor Hudlicky and his ne’er-do-well compatriots (none of whom likely knew each other except in passing).
What was Hudlicky’s sin? His 12-page document (approximating 4000 words) dealt with issues he believed were affecting organic synthesis research and communication, and covered topics such as the range of research options available, integrity and trustworthiness of the relevant literature, transference of skills from mentor to trainee, impact of information technology, the corporatization of the university environment, the effect of new technology, the diversity of the available work force, and the competition for resources among researchers—all topics that people of putative good will and competence (such as the author and his reviewers and editors) could agree had a demonstrable effect on the quality of research currently conducted. However, Hudlicky voiced a smattering of opinions that were deemed unacceptable by a small number of people who both read his submission and were somewhat active on Twitter. Here are the sentences constituting his sins, which fall into two of the categories Hudlicky identified as relevant for analysis of research productivity. I have paraphrased them very slightly for length:
Under Diversity of Workforce: “In the last two decades many groups have been designated with “preferential status” (despite substantive increases in the recruitment of women and minorities). Preferential treatment of one group leads inexorably to disadvantages for another. Each candidate should have an equal opportunity to secure a position, regardless of personal identification/ categorization. Hiring practices that aim at equality of outcome is counter-productive if it results in discrimination against the most meritorious candidates. Such practice has also led to the emergence of mandatory “training workshops” on gender equity, inclusion, diversity, and discrimination.”
So those apparently objectional words constitute 90 of 4000—a small proportion of the total content of the essay, and the proffering of an opinion that insists “if”: not that diversity, inclusivity and equality provisions necessarily produce prejudicial hiring practices (although the research evidence suggests that they clearly do [1])) then they may have a detrimental effect on research productivity. It is also important to note that these opinions paraphrase very closely a decision reached and publicized by a German court in 2007, at least according to a supporter of Hudlicky who dared express an opinion supporting his colleague.
The Twitter mob trolls who objected to this opinion reacted as if what Dr. Hudlicky said was that efforts to “diversify” hiring and student selection were definitively harmful, while what he truly did was only raise the possibilities that such actions could become counterproductive if they resulted in the exclusion of qualified candidates. No one can object to this opinion, reasonably—unless they assume, as did Hudlicky’s critics, that all claims to objectivity in hiring and selection are inextricably bound up with the systemic prejudice hypothetically characterizing all hierarchies of specialization.
Under Transference of Skills: “The training and mentoring of new generations of professionals must be attended to by proper relationships of “masters and apprentices” without dilution of standards. Hudlicky described two conditions under which the successful transfer of skills can occur: first, if the skill is not transferred within three generations, it is lost forever, and second, there must be “an unconditional submission of the apprentice to his/her master.” This applies not only in the sciences but also in art, music, and martial arts…. Submission to one’s mentor is rarely attainable today. Many students are unwilling to submit to any level of hard work demanded by professors. The university does not support professors in this endeavor as it views students as financial assets and hence protects them from any undue hardships that may be demanded by the “masters.” This situation, coupled with the fact that professors have less and less time to mentor students in the laboratory, cannot provide for a productive transfer of skills, especially the maintenance of standards and integrity of research.”
This is an additional 170 words/4000, and paraphrases an opinion most famously put forward by Michael Polanyi, a Hungarian-English polymath of genius level, who made contributions to chemistry, philosophy and economics, and who delineated the importance of “tacit knowledge” (that is, knowledge that was acted out but not necessarily articulated) in the transmission of specialized technical ability across the generations. Hudlicky was therefore criticized and pilloried by individuals on Twitter who appeared to know nothing of M. Polanyi’s work on tacit knowledge (for whom such ignorance was perhaps justifiable) but also by the editor of Angewandte, for whom such ignorance (voluntary or otherwise) was most certainly not. Acquisition of this knowledge required precisely the unfreedom recommended by Hudlicky—followed, of course (with the acquisition of the aptly named Master’s degree) by autonomy in thought and action that was increased beyond what it would have been capable of achieving without the devoted apprenticeship in question. Such a process can only be undertaken by a pupil capable of regarding his or her teacher as a true mentor, and by a mentor bent on producing a pupil more capable than him or herself, after an intensive period of training. None of that, according to Hudlicky (and this is not obviously an unreasonable hypothesis in this day of age) is possible in the university as it is currently constituted, even in the departments that still teach hard sciences. Not only is it not possible, he implies, but it is no longer posited even as an acceptable possibility. In a properly functioning institute of training, however, it might be argued that disciplined and contractually-mediated temporary subjugation to higher authority is eminently desirable, despite the limited sacrifice of casual autonomy that might require, if the person or persons to whom the subjugation is made are true experts. It is the willingness to undertake this apprenticeship, as well as the capability of superseding it, that makes up the master in “Master’s degree”—a designation that I notice Brock still grants, despite potentially colonial overtones at least as damning as those that characterized Hudlicky’s writing (if we are going to go down that absurd route).
That is the sum total of Hudlicky’s academic crimes. He has faced severe retaliation on no less than seven separate fronts for his hypothetically unforgivable thoughts—the two we have already discussed, and five more, including, third, the cancelation of an entire issue of the journal Synthesis (published by Thieme), which was to be dedicated to his 70th birthday and for which invitations had already been sent to more than forty prominent scientists; fourth, the elimination of any mention of his work in yet another journal, Highlights in Chemistry; fifth, a statement by the Norwegian Chemical Society (not as of yet made public) hypothetically critiquing his ongoing collaborations with three Norwegian researchers; and sixth, his transformation into whipping boy by his own faithless professional colleagues at the administrative level at Brock University. Dr. Greg Finn, Provost and VP Academic at that institution, saw nothing wrong with stabbing one of his university’s most esteemed scientists in the back at the first sign of trouble. The provost wrote a painfully cringing apologetic “open letter to the public,” claiming, of course, that Hudlicky’s opinions, if in the least controversial, were in no possible manner representative of Brock University as a whole, and essentially hanging that institution’s hypothetically valued top chemist out to dry. Finn states that Hudlicky’s article “…contains descriptions of the graduate supervisor-graduate student relationship that connote disrespect and subservience. These statements could be alarming to students and others who have the reasonable expectation of respectful and supportive mentorship…. [The statements in this paper] do not reflect the principles of inclusivity, diversity and equity included in the University’s mission, vision and values as approved by our Senate and Board of Trustees.” Only an individual accustomed to dining on very thin gruel or simply spoiled meat would find any nourishment in statements with such content and of that quality.
An admirable university, secure in its worth, would have determined very quickly that one Dr. Hudlicky was, conservatively, worth a hundred Dr. Finn’s, and acted accordingly. But research prowess is no longer as important as willingness to mouth the appalling commonplaces of political correctness in the hallowed corridors of academe. And what that essentially means is that resentful and underqualified pretenders to the role of useful intellectual can now exercise the upper hand in apparent scientific worthiness, so far as it has been reduced to a simple political power game. And the list of consequences for Dr. Hudlicky I have outlined so far does not by any means exhaust the description of his punishment. He is (was (?)) apparently a scientist of sufficient merit, as his Canada Research Chair should have clearly and decisively indicated, to have had an entire upcoming issue of another journal, Synthesis, devoted to a retrospective of his work, complete with invited commentary—and now the existence of that tribute has become highly doubtful.
Three other events worth of note that came to my attention over the last two weeks, when I have been communicating with academics concerned with this sequence of happenings, drive these points home. A highly cited professor of physics, who I cannot name, at a university I cannot name either (suffice it to say that the former has garnered 100+ publications and 7000+ citations in a highly technical field) had his standard Canadian Federal grant application rejected because (or so the reviewers claimed) he had not sufficiently detailed his plans to ensure diversity, inclusivity and equity (DIE) practices while conducting his scientific inquiry. It is now standard practice for university hiring boards to insist that their faculty job applicants submit a DIE plan with their curriculum vitae—a terribly dangerous occurrence of its own. I believe that the fundamental reason such plans are required, particularly of those who practice in the so-called “hard” STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) is so that those who could not hope to assess the quality of research endeavours in those specialties as a consequence of their own ability or prowess, can be made into judges by enforcing the adoption of standards of attitude and behavior that have nothing to do with the fields in question. I am no arithmetical genius, for example, myself. It is almost certain that a Master’s degree, to say nothing of a Ph.D. or professorship in mathematics, would have been beyond me, even in my younger years, when such talent is most likely to manifest itself. I would never dream of attempting to review a grant application in a specialized subfield of chemistry, engineering or physics—even of biology, which is nearer my bailiwick. But if it became possible to adopt the position of judge because of my colleagues’ attitude toward student selection and staffing, then—presto! Those who are applying for such funding are no longer painfully more intelligent than me. They are merely and reprehensibly in error in their basic political opinions. There is nothing but victory in that for me, in precise proportion to my degree of resentment for my unfortunate and rather incurable stupidity.
Consider, in addition, the current landing page for the Department of Physics at McGill University. It is difficult to provide a purely objective analysis of the significance of the different elements of this page, at least concerning their relative size or prominence (and, therefore, their implicit importance), because there is wide variation in resolution of the various screens that users may employ to access it. Suffice it to say, however, that at a resolution of 2048 by 1536, which is higher than average (and therefore allows more of the available visual content to be presented to the viewer simultaneously) the second-most visually evident active link is the “McGill Physics Community Statement Against Racism”—and, if this is not sufficient proof of the upstanding moral quality of that “community” there is also an active link to an “Equity Diversity and Inclusion” page in the center of the main menu bar of the page.
It does not seem merely picayune to note (1) that the proper role of such a page is to convey information pertaining to physics to those who might be applying to that department at McGill and not about the political or sociological attitudes of its faculty, administrators and students. It is also perhaps not out of place (2) to voice a certain skepticism with regard to the timing of this oh-so-very-properly-moral statement and note that if it required the unfortunate death of one George Floyd to motivate its appearance it is either inexcusably opportunistic or a classic case of closing the barn door once the cattle had already made their disappearance. To make it even clearer, if that is necessary: if the McGill physics community is so unrepentantly racist that it required someone’s death to draw its existence to the surface, a mere banner statement is by no means sufficient atonement. If it is not racist to that notable extreme, then mere humility might have led to the conclusion that now was not the appropriate time to trumpet the assumption of moral superiority necessary to formulate the anti-racist and pro-diversity claims that are being made, front and center, regardless of the fact that this page exists to provide information about physics and not sociology at the august institution of McGill University.
I would also like to point out, just for the sake of completeness, that the two rather egregious moral errors in page construction do not constitute the entire universe of deception characterizing the page. It is apparent that the McGill Physics Department has decided that live classes of the classic sort are unlikely to take place in the fall of 2020 and is now offering its students (who are certainly being regarded as far stupider than most of the physics majors I have met) the opportunity to “implement modern, evidence-based teaching techniques & technologies” and the “unprecedented chance for students to shape their own education, and how science is taught at McGill.” Clearly, what might appear to the uneducated observer as somewhat of a catastrophe for new undergraduate attendees at McGill (that is, the impossibility of attending live university classes) is actually—as those in the know clearly realize—a new and special opportunity for them to be educated in an even finer manner than those who were unfortunate enough to embark upon their education before the blessing of the COVID-19 virus. I mention this only to point out that virtually nothing presented as content on this departmental page, political or not, has escaped the spirit of deception that is arguably its central and most appalling feature, whether it is political (as in the case of objection 1 and 2) and designed to signal a particular brand of ideological morality, or a consequence of third-rate marketing tactics (objection 3), which are more simply characterized as lies.
And, in case you are not convinced by the stories I just told, which do lack somewhat for detail, because of the current necessity for confidentiality, consider this: a group of three professors at Concordia were awarded a New Frontiers in Research Grant (announced in late 2019) aimed at “engaging Indigenous understanding and involving Indigenous communities in the co-creation of knowledge, the project aims to decolonize contemporary physics research and attract Indigenous students.” The head researcher, one Dr. Tanja Tajmel, “questioned the colonial assumptions made in the way Western science evaluates light and what it considers knowledge.” Dr. Louellyn White, associate professor in First Peoples Studies, added that “Indigenous ways of knowing have been suppressed and marginalized throughout academic history and we are finally gaining momentum in elevating Indigenous knowledges as equally valid to Western science… If we, as an institution, do not embody the Territorial Acknowledgement by recognizing and affirming the expertise of our Elders as Knowledge Keepers, the acknowledgement becomes nothing but empty platitudes.” Dr. Ingo Salzmann, the last of the three principal investigators to whom the funds were awarded, says, ““The culture of physics certainly changes with diverse people involved,” he argues. “Therefore, decolonizing science involves challenging the underlying hierarchies.”
The refusal of the research grant application specifically requesting funding for what must now apparently be regarded as “colonialized (or colonized (?) physics” and the success of the application that had the magical mention of “indigenous knowledge” should alert those who know of both and who are attending to the increasing politicization of the university that the STEM fields comprise the next frontier for the politically correct. Qualified and expert researchers in such fields are already in great danger of being pushed aside by politically correct activists who will happily and self-righteously displace them by merely refusing to admit to the existence of anything approximating an objective truth against which claims to competence might be assessed. The rest of us will pay in the longer run, when we no longer have the will or the capacity to make use of the rare talents that make people highly competent and productive as scientists, technological innovators, engineers or mathematicians.
We might also note that the politically-correct micro-tyrants beating the drum for diversity, inclusivity and equity are pursuing two goals which exist in logical contradiction to one another. Those who occupy a field like physics can only be racists if the fundamental claims to transcendental or ontological truth of that discipline are accepted: if physics describes the world, in a manner that is objectively true, then it is possible for whatever group that currently holds positions of power in that discipline to be prejudiced, perhaps by sex or race, and exclude qualified individuals who differ unacceptably along those dimensions to suffer unfair exclusion. But to make this case requires acceptance of the idea of the universality of the truth being pursued. Alternatively, there are multiple valuable forms of physics, shall we say, indicating that multicultural approaches are required—but the absence of those multiple forms are not so much racist as opportunistic or even merely isolated from the larger world (as each individual group can only be expected to pursue its values in an environment where there is no objective truth, but only group values). Which is it? The answer is quite simple: either, or both—depending on where the largest degree of guilt can be attributed. Convenient as this might be, it is not a good long-term solution to the problem: the internal contradictions inherent in such claims will results in within-group deterioration of solidarity in very short order. If classic physics is nothing but Eurocentric power-maneuvering, who cares if non-Caucasians are excluded? They are perfectly free to pursue their own power-centered physics. If there is an objective reality to that physics, then it is possible, at least in principle, to use objective tests of competence to rank-order candidates, and the problem of potential discrimination vanishes, at least to the degree that is possible.
I have suspected for years that the STEM fields posed the most dangerous threat possible to the unopposed dominance of politically correct sociological idiocy over the entirety of the university environment, basing their claim to validity on recognition of something approximating a universally accessible objective reality. That claim is too powerful to go unchallenged in today’s climate of moral self-flagellating among those, particularly common in the ranks of university administrators, who want all the advantages of the power high-ranking hierarchical positions provide, but none of the hypothetical moral baggage that are part and parcel of the prejudicial and patriarchal structure that gave rise to those positions. The proper solution? Continual apology for the sins of others who occupy equivalent or superior positions, conjoined with a willingness to damage the reputation of those miscreants, and to force them into an apologetic stance—or even to apologize for their own unearned privilege, as long as that does not result in any true sacrifice of power, income or authority. This is particular evident, in the stories I have related, in the case of the Brock University Provost.
The George Floyd incident has emboldened those who are shamelessly using crooked faux-moral means to stake a moral claim in the so-called patriarchal structure that makes up the academic world. They are certainly able and willing to use the unfortunate death of an individual who had enough of the attributes of a systemically oppressed person to serve as poster boy for the self-serving political claims that are now being made on his behalf. This tendency, unchecked, poses a direct danger to the integrity of precisely those STEM fields that have so far remained essentially immune to the embarrassments and blandishments of the politically correct movement. But, make no mistake about it, scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians: your famous immunity to political concerns will not protect you against what is coming fast over the next five or so years: wake up, pay attention, or perish, along with your legacy. Whatever you might offer the broader culture in terms of general value will be swept aside with little caution by those who regard the very axioms of your field as intolerable truly because of the difficulty in comprehending them and considered publicly as unacceptably exclusionary, unitary and unconcerned with sociological “realities.”

The Highest 10 of How to Find a Psychologist
If you are in the act of choosing a psychologist, how should you begin causeing this to be final decision? Finding the right psychologist can be a challenging undertaking specifically in Quebec where there are over 7500 accredited psychologists. In addition, Quebec features a disproportionate number of psychologists when compared with other provinces helping to make your pursuit even more tough (almost 50% of most psychologists in Canada are signed up in Quebec).
psychologist prague
What should you look for in a psychologist? What tactic should you take into account? Is any type of level and process critical? These are generally very important concerns to think about while searching for an honest professional to assist you. Fortunately, listed here are a collection of rules you can use to assist you in making your choice. Here are the most notable 10 variables it is best to seek out and give some thought to depending on my skilled view and what my buyers have said happen to be the most important components for the kids.
1. Be sure the skilled you are interested in is really a registered psychologist. Possibly you have encounter terms and conditions such as 'therapist' or 'psychotherapist' and immediately feel they are a psychologist. Nevertheless, this is simply not essentially the fact. Generally, any individual in Quebec, even those that have no training in psychological overall health, can contact them selves a therapist or psychotherapist, and state they training psychotherapy. Nonetheless, with current changes in legislation, psychotherapy are only able to be used by way of a particular person signed up with l'Ordre des psychologues du Quebec (OPQ) or the College or university des medecins du Quebec.
2. Make sure these people have a education in Specialized medical Mindset. Psychologists are trained to deal with complications employing technically-validated remedy standards. Although professionals with other levels could possibly be useful, you almost certainly never want somebody to just guideline or advice you by providing general suggestions when you really need aid in an identifiable emotional dilemma that is certainly influencing your life.
3. Believability. Demand additional expertise. Would they function in exclusive practice only or even in a medical facility settings at the same time? Psychologists who operate in private hospitals usually are energetic, educate individuals that will come to be potential future psychologists and they are in involved in responding to significant study concerns which will upfront the industry of psychology. Are they looked for through the marketing because of their competence? Are they really interviewed for his or her view about important troubles? If an expert is popular, it will always be a signal they are possibly a knowledgeable and trustworthy professional.
4. Always opt for a psychologist which has a PhD or doctorate. Before, just a Master's degree was needed to training being a psychologist in Quebec. However, recently there has been improvements on the law that need a PhD. Acquiring a doctorate in Specialized medical Psychology typically consists of no less than several more years of training, encounter and supervised training by way of a registered psychologist, whilst a Master's education might be accomplished in as little as twelve months. This may not be to mention that somebody having a Master's degree might not be a great healthy for you personally. Even so, as your emotional wellness is important for your requirements, you may prefer to decide on someone who has gotten far more substantial supervised instruction.
5. What technique must i use? In seeking help for any concerns that are interfering with your lifetime, you would like to optimize your improvements with treatment that actually works in the quickest time achievable. While there is overlap with many types of remedy, Job Makes from the two Canadian and Us citizen Mental Associations have validated that Mental Behaviour Remedy, or CBT for brief, has received one of the most research help and support. In my opinion, opt for the approach that research has shown works.
6. If a psychologist states to use CBT they will be checking development. A crucial facet of CBT is gauging treatment method outcomes with consistent and aims questionnaires to judge treatment method effectiveness. Studies have shown us that keeping track of these types of adjustments raises success in treatment method. Several psychologists will say they training CBT, so just how do you approach verifying their claim that they normally use CBT? An effective way to analyze to get a psychologist's fidelity to CBT is to find out if they will determine results to you. Simply just inquire further what questionnaires they will likely use to follow the results you accomplish. Should they are not able to determine any questionnaire, it is best to concern whether they really do process CBT.
7. Verify to ensure the individual is actually a signed up psychologist according to the OPQ by talking to.The OPQ was established with the Authorities of Quebec as a way to defend people when searching for emotional solutions. Through a extensive overview procedure, the OPQ helps to ensure that someone offers the needed expertise and encounter to become a certified clinical psychologist. If you are in yet another region or condition, be sure to speak to your nearby professional obtain that permits psychologists in your town.
8. Does the individual return your messages or calls rapidly? Being in times that you are seeking help, an easy profit call is a superb sign with the commitment from the specialized. How do you truly feel if you are seeking assistance and you only get a call up back again days or weeks afterwards? Does this cause you to feel such as the man or woman can be trusted? When a person foliage me a information, I take their get in touch with very seriously, even when it is simply for facts or even a request for solutions. I return their phone within 24hrs. In my view, this should actually be the standard in a helping job and its the standard that my clientele have cherished.
9. Level of comfort. In speaking with a psychologist the very first time, evaluate your feelings. Have you been at ease with them? Will be the individual courteous? Can they listen to you and also respond to questions? Make sure you consider you gut instinct soon after the first contact with the person.
10. The alliance involving both you and your psychologist can be a crucial point. Research has revealed the therapeutic alliance is a good forecaster of results in treatment. A healing alliance is identified as a romantic relationship when the psychologist is genuine, hot and it has empathy. Immediately after the first conference, how do you feel? Were actually you at ease with them? In case the psychologist matches these three criteria based on you, you probably have a very good in shape.
To sum up, selecting the best psychologist is a crucial aspect in recovering from the difficulties you might be going through. I am hoping there are actually these Best 10 suggestions practical in your search!

Ethics and Reproducibility: Moira’s start of darkness
Disclaimer: I’m a social psychologist, working at a U.S. university. The basic principles of what I’m talking about apply to Moira’s situation as well, but some of the details may differ.
As a researcher myself, Moira has possibly one of the most relatable evil origin stories I’ve seen in my life. It’s like Blizzard took a researcher, asked them what would make them go straight-up villainous, and turned that into a character.
Let me explain.
Three parts under the read more (with lots more pictures):
1. Ethics approval in research
2. Difficulty with reproducing research
3. The publication process
“Overwatch held back the pace of scientific discovery for decades. They believed that my methods were too radical. Too controversial. They tried to silence me.”
“We delved deeper into those areas forbidden by law. By morality.”
How exactly was Overwatch slowing down Moira’s research and stopping her? Lemme tell you about the IRB.
“IRB” is short for “Institutional Review Board.” It’s also known by a few other names, but let’s ignore that for now. Their job is pretty much to make sure we aren’t being evil scientists. Not traumatizing participants and all that. Researchers can’t so much as sneeze without their approval. If they find a study even slightly off, they’ll order revisions or, in extreme cases, shut it down completely. Their sole purpose is to stop Moiras. (Edit: See the end of the post for more details on why IRBs are very necessary, and how Moira’s character was likely inspired by the dark history of research past.)
In theory.
Here’s how your typical IRB review goes:
Sometimes (Edit: rarely) IRBs get drunk on their power. In those cases they might request revisions or reject research projects for reasons that have absolutely nothing to do with the participants’ safety:
I’ve never met a researcher that didn’t have some kind of IRB horror story. We totally understand why they’re necessary (any researcher worth their salt can rattle off a list of studies that made IRBs necessary), but dang can they be fury-inducing. I’m sure that all of us have wished we could skip that hurdle from time to time, no matter how good and ethical it is to have them.
“In addition, other geneticists were unable to reproduce the results of Moira's research, which further called her discoveries into question. Instead of kickstarting her career, her paper seriously damaged her reputation.”
Let me tell you a story. The story of a researcher named Amy Cuddy. I’m going to be brief, but if you want a more in-depth description, you can read this NY Times article.
Lately all kinds of research disciplines, from Psychology to Biology, have been having trouble with reproducibility. I’ve seen speculation that Moira faked her results, or that she’s just better than other scientists and that’s why.
Amy Cuddy kinda became the so-called “poster-child” of this problem for social psychology. I’m not sure why she was singled out in particular (LOTS of researchers have research that’s failed to replicate), but it’s probably because she has one of the most popular TED talks of all time on exactly the research that’s having trouble replicating. Only half of her findings aren’t replicating (the other half are), but that’s not stopping people.
It’s possible she inspired that part of Moira’s backstory.
People started attacking her, calling her a fraud, dragging her name through the mud, basically using her name as a pejorative. Because her research failed to replicate, and she didn’t immediately disown it (she’s not the only one to have this reaction, but she’s the one who got hit hardest for it). She was pressured out of her job at Harvard, lost friends, lost her health, her reputation, etc. Researchers criticizing work using “for the sake of research” as an excuse can be brutal.
And the thing is, it wasn’t her fault. And it’s not that other researchers are stupid either.
Why doesn’t research replicate?
Well, there are a bunch of reasons. Sure, fraud can be one of them. But cases of fraud are exceedingly rare. The only one I can think of is Diederik Stapel. And yeah. Sometimes research doesn’t replicate because people trying to replicate it make some kind of mistake. But in that case it wouldn’t cause the reputational damage we see in Moira’s case.
It all comes down to how science works in the first place.
Possible reason 1: Statistics.
There’s always a chance that scientific “findings” could’ve happened due to a coincidence. Maybe Gabe would’ve turned into a smoke monster anyway, and the experiments Moira did just happened around the same time by coincidence.
So we have statistics.
(Canon note: Moira was disgraced before she joined Blackwatch, but we’re not sure what her research was before then. I’m using this as a concrete example in lieu of whatever her earlier work was.)
I’m not gonna go into the details, but statistics tell us if our results probably weren’t a coincidence. But they can’t guarantee it. We generally say that, if our math tells us there was a 95% chance our results weren’t a coincidence, then our results are “real.” But there’s always that 5% chance that they’re still just random chance. It could be that Moira’s big paper was part of that 5%.
There are also ways of fiddling with statistics that increase that 5% chance, and sometimes researchers make mistakes. (Or, on rare occasions, do it intentionally to get published. Without publications, you don’t get funding or jobs. No more money, no more research, no more job. So sometimes people “cheat.” The practice of fiddling with your data is called p-hacking, and this toxic bit of academic culture is called “publish or perish.” But I don’t think either of those are relevant to Moira, seeing as she does get “real” results.)
Statistics also make a lot of assumptions about how data “should” look, but data rarely meets those assumptions in the real world. Not meeting them can increase your chance of finding (or not finding) evidence for something, regardless of the objective truth.
Possible reason 2: Third variables.
In science, it’s rarely possible to account for absolutely everything. Sometimes results can’t be replicated because there’s some other thing influencing the results.
Maybe Moira’s Shadow Monster Formula only works on, say, people who’ve also been in the SEP. Or maybe it only works when the room’s a specific temperature. Or maybe it’s the time of day, or the subject’s metabolism, or their mood, or something accidentally fell into Moira’s mix and she didn’t notice, and that’s what made it work. Any researcher trying to reproduce her results without knowing about that unknown third variable wouldn’t succeed, and they might assume she made it all up.
Publishing Papers
Now, a quick timeline of publishing a paper: (This is based on my experience in social psychology. It may differ for biology. Grant writing isn’t always necessary if you have other funding, or the study doesn’t require money for materials or paying participants. This is, as you can imagine, rarely the case for biology.)
After all that work and all that time (for a single paper!), your research doesn’t replicate due to what amounts to basically bad luck... And then after all that hard work, and all of that time, you get turned into a social pariah and accused of being a fraud, just because of some random chance.
Do I condone Moira’s actions? Hell no.
But do I understand why she snapped? Well... yes.
EDIT: @tacticalgrandma made a great point. I absolutely shouldn’t talk about this without talking about some other very important things that the writers were getting at.
On a meta level, the writers almost definitely wrote her to reflect some of the more unsavory parts of research history. She represents and references unethical researchers throughout history.
Research has a long history of doing some really awful things, often disproportionately targeting minorities and other at-risk populations like prisoners.
Some examples of this are infecting African Americans with syphilis, and not treating them even after a treatment became available. The Milgram experiment, which essentially convinced many of its participants that they’d killed someone. And the Little Albert study.
In the Little Albert study, researchers conditioned a child to be TERRIFIED of anything white and fluffy (INCLUDING SANTA) and then just never did anything to fix it. The fear of white-and-fluffy later generalized to anything-fluffy. They lost track of him, and let him live his life terrified of everything white and fluffy. I think that Moira’s association with a white rabbit may be a direct reference to this particular study.
Researchers have done some HORRIBLE things in the past, resulting in great loss of life, loss of quality of life, and long-lasting trauma for many people, that disproportionately affected minorities and vulnerable populations.
Moira intentionally evokes this past, and operates much like one of the researchers from the pre-IRB era: people who all-too-often only saw “scientific progress,” and failed to see the real people that they were hurting. It’s possible that her experimentation on Gabe is also a reference to this history of unethical research practices with minorities. Gabe is an ethnic minority, and Moira experimented on him. She took those results and retained all the good parts of them for herself (sucking away life force, and teleportation) without the disadvantages that Gabe endures (constant pain). Even if Gabe initially consented to the experiments, Michael Chu’s stated that he was scared of the results, and his voice lines definitely imply that he is NOT happy with the results.
Moira’s rejection of ethics is a rejection of the rights and humanity of her participants. Her mindset is a reflection of some HUGE problems and HORRIFIC things in research.
Putting knowledge above the happiness, safety, and autonomy of people is NEVER okay, no matter what you’ve been through. What Moira may or may not have experiences in NO WAY justifies her actions. She’s a villain through-and-through.

Keys to an Equitable Recovery: Better Data and ‘Trusted Messengers’
“It is a structural problem that people don’t have access to high-quality health care.”
— Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith, associate professor of internal medicine, public health and management at Yale University, and chair of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s Covid-19 Health Equity task force
In early December, a Black doctor, Dr. Susan Moore — then hospitalized with Covid-19 — posted a video online complaining of inadequate care by her white doctor. After her video was shared widely, the problem was corrected, but just weeks later, Dr. Moore died of complications from the disease.
The news lit up the group chats of Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith, whose friends pointed out just how painfully familiar Dr. Moore’s experience was.
“There were so many text threads with my friends saying, ‘Yes, this happens,’” explained Dr. Nunez-Smith, a practicing internist, an associate professor at Yale University and the founding director of Yale’s Equity Research and Innovation Center. After the inauguration, she will also chair President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s Covid-19 Health Equity task force.
“So often, even I have to declare I’m a physician, almost out of this desperation to say, ‘Hey, pay attention to me, listen to me,’” she said in a recent phone interview.
“If it’s this hard for me, then what is it like for our patients who aren’t part of this system, who have a million other competing priorities, who don’t speak the language of health care?”
Dr. Nunez-Smith has noted that even when she’s functioning as a physician, some of her patients don’t take her seriously, handing her their meal trays or assuming that she has come to empty the trash.
This kind of inside-out, top-to-bottom racism in the health care system and the social and economic inequities that lead to poor health outcomes have been the focus of much of Dr. Nunez-Smith’s research. In her newest role, she has been tasked with drawing up a pandemic recovery plan that is both efficient and equitable.
In Her Words caught up with Dr. Nunez-Smith over the phone to discuss the vast racial health disparities of the pandemic and what the next few months will look like.
What frustrates you most about the conversations around gender and racial disparities in the health outcomes of Covid-19? Have there been moments where you’ve just buried your head in your hands?
Yes, I do have those moments! We have to counter the personal blame narrative. Things like, “These people haven’t taken care of themselves well enough, that’s why they have comorbidities” and other such notions that really are blind to the underlying reality.
It is a structural problem that people don’t have access to high-quality health care or to even think about early diagnosis and appropriate treatment for chronic conditions. What about the environments where people live? Is it really possible to get out there and do physical activity? Is it safe? Are there environmental toxins? Are we talking at all about who has the privilege of staying home? These things are not accidental. They are the results of policies that have been driven by a legacy of racism in our country and all the other -isms.
We know that certain groups, Black and Hispanic communities for example, have been particularly hard hit by the pandemic. What are some of your policy priorities moving forward to address these inequities?
One of the things we have to commit to is the disruption of that predictability. We have to have conversations around access to high-quality health care pathways but also conversations about educational and economic opportunities.
In the short term, though, as we think about Covid-19 and recovery, we have to ask what it looks like to have equitable access to testing, tracing, supportive quarantining and isolation, treatments and access to vaccination.
What does it look like?
First, we need better data. This is a huge thing that I spend a lot of time on: We have incomplete data right now, across the country, and we need better data to inform and drive policy.
Covid-19 Vaccines ›
Answers to Your Vaccine Questions
If I live in the U.S., when can I get the vaccine?
While the exact order of vaccine recipients may vary by state, most will likely put medical workers and residents of long-term care facilities first. If you want to understand how this decision is getting made, this article will help.
When can I return to normal life after being vaccinated?
Life will return to normal only when society as a whole gains enough protection against the coronavirus. Once countries authorize a vaccine, they’ll only be able to vaccinate a few percent of their citizens at most in the first couple months. The unvaccinated majority will still remain vulnerable to getting infected. A growing number of coronavirus vaccines are showing robust protection against becoming sick. But it’s also possible for people to spread the virus without even knowing they’re infected because they experience only mild symptoms or none at all. Scientists don’t yet know if the vaccines also block the transmission of the coronavirus. So for the time being, even vaccinated people will need to wear masks, avoid indoor crowds, and so on. Once enough people get vaccinated, it will become very difficult for the coronavirus to find vulnerable people to infect. Depending on how quickly we as a society achieve that goal, life might start approaching something like normal by the fall 2021.
If I’ve been vaccinated, do I still need to wear a mask?
Yes, but not forever. The two vaccines that will potentially get authorized this month clearly protect people from getting sick with Covid-19. But the clinical trials that delivered these results were not designed to determine whether vaccinated people could still spread the coronavirus without developing symptoms. That remains a possibility. We know that people who are naturally infected by the coronavirus can spread it while they’re not experiencing any cough or other symptoms. Researchers will be intensely studying this question as the vaccines roll out. In the meantime, even vaccinated people will need to think of themselves as possible spreaders.
Will it hurt? What are the side effects?
The Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine is delivered as a shot in the arm, like other typical vaccines. The injection won’t be any different from ones you’ve gotten before. Tens of thousands of people have already received the vaccines, and none of them have reported any serious health problems. But some of them have felt short-lived discomfort, including aches and flu-like symptoms that typically last a day. It’s possible that people may need to plan to take a day off work or school after the second shot. While these experiences aren’t pleasant, they are a good sign: they are the result of your own immune system encountering the vaccine and mounting a potent response that will provide long-lasting immunity.
Will mRNA vaccines change my genes?
No. The vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer use a genetic molecule to prime the immune system. That molecule, known as mRNA, is eventually destroyed by the body. The mRNA is packaged in an oily bubble that can fuse to a cell, allowing the molecule to slip in. The cell uses the mRNA to make proteins from the coronavirus, which can stimulate the immune system. At any moment, each of our cells may contain hundreds of thousands of mRNA molecules, which they produce in order to make proteins of their own. Once those proteins are made, our cells then shred the mRNA with special enzymes. The mRNA molecules our cells make can only survive a matter of minutes. The mRNA in vaccines is engineered to withstand the cell’s enzymes a bit longer, so that the cells can make extra virus proteins and prompt a stronger immune response. But the mRNA can only last for a few days at most before they are destroyed.
Then it becomes an exercise in operations and logistics, but it’s also about understanding the lived experiences and realities of people.
So think about something like testing. So much of the testing in our country is drive-up testing, so obviously you need a car. And what are the hours of those facilities? Or, think about vaccinations that require special handling and cold chain storage. Where are we setting up those kinds of facilities and how far are they from the hardest hit? We also have to make sure there is no cost for the vaccine.
But really, the road map begins with data; it’s foundational.
Are there systems in place to make good data available? Is it just a matter of someone at the top — like you — asking for it?
I’m trying to get that understanding myself. I’m sure you’ve seen that our conversations and communications in terms of the transition are a bit … well, they are what they are … so we don’t have full visibility of everything that exists. But do I think it is possible for us to collect the data we need? Yes.
We need to collect data along the lines of sex, gender, race, ethnicity and geography. And kudos to all of the jurisdictions that are figuring out how to collect this data in a really robust way. But for the places where that might be hard, I think the federal government has a role to play in terms of technical assistance and guidance.
There are so many studies that show that men and women have different reactions to vaccines, but when I was looking through the data of the two vaccines that have been greenlit by the F.D.A., I found little information on the sex differences in adverse events (side effects) and immunogenicity (immune system reaction). Does that concern you?
You’re right, sex is a biological variable, and I think it’s really important for there to be transparency. But keep in mind where we are — we’re in emergency use authorization, we’re not in approval — and more of this information will come; I do expect to see more subgroup analyses.
The communities we’ve been talking about — racial minorities, women and LGBTQ folks, for example — have little trust in the health care system already because of how they’ve been treated in the past. What kind of messaging will help rebuild that trust when it comes to the vaccine?
It is completely rational for the groups that you listed to have a healthy degree of skepticism. We have to start the conversation there and acknowledge that there are groups in our country that have not really received the respect and the fair treatment that they deserve. It is very frustrating when people are like, “Oh these folks aren’t educated.” We need to understand why people have this apprehension.
We need to find out what questions people have and try to answer them. Let us be honest and transparent, and when we don’t know the answer, we won’t make it up. We’ll say, “We don’t know yet.”
Then we need to ask, well, who do you want to hear that answer from? That matters a lot. We know that information moves through different groups and populations differently. Maybe it’s their doctor or maybe it’s their neighbor who is a nurse. People text me all the time, not as a person involved with the advisory board, but simply as a doctor they know. So we have to make sure that the trusted messengers have answers and consistent messaging.
So far, the vaccine rollout has been slow, and we’ve been seeing stories of haphazard and even unfair rollouts in different states and institutions. What are your plans to ramp up the speed of the vaccine campaign in an equitable way?
We’re already seeing some places where there are concerns that there aren’t enough vaccinations for their health care workers. And in other places, they’ve moved on to other groups that haven’t been prioritized by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.
I feel very confident there hasn’t been political interference in the work that the A.C.I.P. is doing, advising the C.D.C. and the F.D.A., and that these guidelines are considering equity. I’m very reassured when it comes to that.
But what the C.D.C. provides to states is guidance, and states do have discretion to adjust. So what has emerged is this patchwork of lots of different things bubbling up. There is a lot more that can be done in terms of federal coordination.

Martin Gilens and Benjamin I. Page | Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups, and Average Citizens
from Perspectives on Politics, 2014
Who governs? Who really rules? To what extent is the broad body of U.S. citizens sovereign, semisovereign, or largely powerless? These questions have animated much important work in the study of American politics. While this body of research is rich and variegated, it can loosely be divided into four families of theories: Majoritarian Electoral Democracy, Economic-Elite Domination, and two types of interest-group pluralism—Majoritarian Pluralism, in which the interests of all citizens are more or less equally represented, and Biased Pluralism, in which corporations, business associations, and professional groups predominate. Each of these perspectives makes different predictions about the independent influence upon U.S. policy making of four sets of actors: the Average Citizen or“median voter,” Economic Elites, and Mass-based or Business-oriented Interest Groups or industries.
[...]
Each of four theoretical traditions in the study of American politics—which can be characterized as theories of Majoritarian Electoral Democracy, Economic-Elite Domination, and two types of interest-group pluralism, Majoritarian Pluralism and Biased Pluralism—offers different predictions about which sets of actors have how much influence over public policy: average citizens; economic elites; and organized interest groups, mass-based or business-oriented. A great deal of empirical research speaks to the policy influence of one or another set of actors, but until recently it has not been possible to test these contrasting theoretical predictions against each other within a single statistical model. We report on an effort to do so, using a unique data set that includes measures of the key variables for 1,779 policy issues. Multivariate analysis indicates that economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on U.S. government policy, while average citizens and mass-based interest groups have little or no independent influence. The results provide substantial support for theories of Economic-Elite Domination and for theories of Biased Pluralism, but not for theories of Majoritarian Electoral Democracy or Majoritarian Pluralism.
So, in case you wondered, the average citizen has functionally zero impact on policy, even when their 'power' is pulled together in interest groups. We are not living in a democracy, but an oligarchy.
some selections:
The central point that emerges from our research is that economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on U.S. government policy, while mass-based interest groups and average citizens have little or no independent influence.
Our results provide substantial support for theories of Economic-Elite Domination and for theories of Biased Pluralism, but not for theories of Majoritarian Electoral Democracy or Majoritarian Pluralism.
[...]
A final point: Even in a bivariate, descriptive sense,
our evidence indicates that the responsiveness of the U.S. political system when the general public wants government action is severely limited
. Because of the impediments to majority rule that were deliberately built into the U.S. political system—federalism, separation of powers, bicameralism—together with further impediments due to anti-majoritarian congressional rules and procedures, the system has a substantial status quo bias. Thus
when popular majorities favor the status quo, opposing a given policy change, they are likely to get their way; but when a majority—even a very large majority—of the public favors change, it is not likely to get what it wants.
In our 1,779 policy cases, narrow pro-change majorities of the public got the policy changes they wanted only about 30 percent of the time. More strikingly,
even overwhelmingly large pro-change majorities, with 80 percent of the public favoring a policy change, got that change only about 43 percent of the time
.
In any case, normative advocates of populistic democracy may not be enthusiastic about democracy by coincidence, in which ordinary citizens get what they want from government only when they happen to agree with elites or interest groups that are really calling the shots. When push comes to shove, actual influence matters.
[...]
By directly pitting the predictions of ideal-type theories against each other within a single statistical model (using a unique data set that includes imperfect but useful measures of the key independent variables for nearly two thousand policy issues), we have been able to produce some striking findings. One is the nearly total failure of “median voter” and other Majoritarian Electoral Democracy theories. When the preferences of economic elites and the stands of organized interest groups are controlled for, the preferences of the average American appear to have only a minuscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy.
[...]
Overall, net interest-group alignments are not significantly related to the preferences of average citizens. The net alignments of the most influential, business-oriented groups are negatively related to the average citizen’s wishes. So existing interest groups do not serve effectively as transmission belts for the wishes of the populace as a whole. “Potential groups” do not take up the slack, either, since average citizens’ preferences have little or no independent impact on policy after existing groups’ stands are controlled for.
[...]
Furthermore, the preferences of economic elites (as measured by our proxy, the preferences of “affluent” citizens) have far more independent impact upon policy change than the preferences of average citizens do. To be sure, this does not mean that ordinary citizens always lose out; they fairly often get the policies they favor, but only because those policies happen also to be preferred by the economically-elite citizens who wield the actual influence.
[...]
Of course our findings speak most directly to the “first face” of power: the ability of actors to shape policy outcomes on contested issues. But they also reflect—to some degree, at least—the “second face” of power: the ability to shape the agenda of issues that policy makers consider. The set of policy alternatives that we analyze is considerably broader than the set discussed seriously by policy makers or brought to a vote in Congress, and our alternatives are (on average) more popular among the general public than among interest groups. Thus the fate of these policies can reflect policy makers’ refusing to consider them rather than considering but rejecting them. (From our data we cannot distinguish between the two.) Our results speak less clearly to the “third face” of power: the ability of elites to shape the public’s preferences.49 We know that interest groups and policy makers themselves often devote considerable effort to shaping opinion. If they are successful, this might help explain the high correlation we find between elite and mass preferences. But it cannot have greatly inflated our estimate of average citizens’ influence on policy making, which is near zero.
[...]
All in all, we believe that the public is likely to be a more certain guardian of its own interests than any feasible alternative.
[...]
Despite the seemingly strong empirical support in previous studies for theories of majoritarian democracy, our analyses suggest that majorities of the American public actually have little influence over the policies our government adopts. Americans do enjoy many features central to democratic governance, such as regular elections, freedom of speech and association, and a wide- spread (if still contested) franchise. But we believe that if policymaking is dominated by powerful business organizations and a small number of affluent Americans, then America’s claims to being a democratic society are seriously threatened.

Let's talk about CLOSING COSTS! Upcoming Free (& non-promotional) Home Buyer & Seller Classes: Until further notice, all classes are going to be held virtually due to the Coronavirus. Please email [email protected], or [email protected] for a link & password to the classes. Thank you! Home Buyer Classes: Saturday, May 9th, from 9am-11am Saturday, May 16th, from 12pm-2pm Tuesday, May 19th, from 5pm-7pm Saturday, May 30th, from 11am-1pm Seller Classes: Saturday, May 16th, from 9am-11am Thursday May 21st, from 5pm-7pm If these class dates and/or times don't work for you, please let us know. We understand that you have lives, and families, and work. We will work something out that works better with your schedule. Just let us know.... Good morning... or afternoon? I have lost all sense of time, and dates. It's a weird time in our lives right now. A few weeks ago when I wrote up the 'Forbearance and what it really means' blog, I thought that we would all be back to 'normal' by now...whatever 'normal' is... However, I think we can all agree that 2020 is the year that time forgot, and here we were all excited about holidays falling on weekend days... Chris & I are getting used to the virtual classes, and people seem to like them. It is a shorter time frame though so there are things we simply do not have time to cover, and that's why I need to step these up again to at least every other week instead of just once a month as I've been doing. Please, if you have any questions, send them over to me, and I will be happy to help! Chris and I are both still working. I am still showing homes, and writing up offers, but showing homes is a bit trickier right now as we do want everyone to be safe, and we have to work within the guidelines that we have been given. Who says an old dog can't learn new tricks??? Just a quick message... usually about now we would be having our Client Appreciation Event where we THANK YOU for your friendship, your referrals, your continued business & support...and well, just for being part of our lives! We LOVE YOU. Let's be honest...that's not happening this year, so be on the lookout for a little something-something from me and Chris Berg in your mailbox in the next few weeks. When you get it you just have to tag us on the social media of your choice...Facebook? Instagram? ...and maybe leave us a glowing review somewhere?? We miss you!! I want to go over Closing costs this time, and 'hopefully' I will be able to get a short video out on this too. I am working on that one... Let me know what you think! Closing costs are an important part of the home buying (or selling) process, but no one really knows what they are, are often how much they're going to be....and why is that? Well, first you need to know that there are 28 people involved in the purchase/sale of a home. You will most likely only ever see four of them.... your lender, your agent, your inspector, and your title officer at the end. You'll hear a lot about appraisers, and underwriters, but that is a different blog. Everyone has a job to do in the transfer of the property from the seller to the buyer....and everyone needs to get paid. Your buyers agent is FREE (don't get caught by 'buyers agency fees' as those are not common), but that may be the only free thing you get. Seriously... you don't have to pay for a buyers agent! There is your good news. :-D So what the heck is closing costs then? Lots of people talk about closing costs, but most people don't understand what they are...or how they're paid. Closing costs have two separate parts really...1....the part associated with your loan, and 2...the part associated with the title company and changing the ownership of the home to you.. One thing you need to know is that closing costs are not set...in other words...one persons closing costs will not be the same as another persons closing costs. Why? Because ...1....every person has a different loan based on their credit scores, type of loan, amount of home buying, amount (if any) of downpayment, what day they're closing (keys) on, interest rate, APR rate, lender they're using (some have more fees than others), etc... See how complicated that can get? So what about the second part? Well, that can differ as well based on the title company since not every title company charges exactly the same for their individual costs. Then there is also the costs for the property taxes of the home, time of year you are buying based on when the taxes are due/have been paid, cost of your home owners insurance, amount of loan interest, and more. Even more confusing, yes? Ok...now I know you are thinking that this weeks post is pointless then, but really, I have a point! :-) My point is that closing costs are variable based on you, your loan, your lender, your (soon to be) new home, and on the title company. So how do you figure that out? Well, really no one can figure out HOW much your closing costs are going to be until you have an accepted offer on a home...then we can figure out what your closing costs will be because you will have a home to base numbers off of, a loan chosen, a lender, and the title company picked out. Most numbers in real estate are a guesstimate until you have all the pieces in place...all the ducks in order...so to speak. When you are getting pre-approved, your lender will base all your numbers on a guesstimate...what we think your costs are going to be. Most times lenders, etc will guess high so that the numbers will come in smaller and more affordable for you. It is always better to look like a hero than a zero! :-) I know, I know...still not very helpful is it? I am sorry. Closing costs are as individual as you are. However, 98% of buyers will request the seller to pay for 2%-3% of their closing costs. Where does that number come from though as even this number changes depending on the person, their loan, the home involved, etc. Well, to start... a FHA loan requires 3.5% downpayment. FHA is the most common loan type for buyers as it is very forgiving, and easier for the majority of folks to get pre-approved for. There are some loans, and yes, grants too, that can take care of that down payment for you....meaning a ZERO down loan for you, the buyer. There are some additional fees to using these down payment assistance programs that is part of your closing costs. There is also a zero down USDA loan that has other fees associated with it. On average, the costs between title, loan, lender, taxes, interest, insurance, etc....run about 2%-3% of the homes purchase price....rarely does it run more. When listing a home, I (and many other agents) include at least some seller paid closing costs to the sales price of the home. This is done because so many buyers request those from the seller, and this way it isn't a surprise to the seller. So, yes, some sellers will pay for your closing costs when buying a home...of course, that depends on if there are other offers involved. In a multiple offer situation the seller may not pay any closing costs. One thing you need to know though is that if you ask for 3% in closing costs, and the lender only needs 2%, you don't get that other 1%....it goes back to the seller. You can't get cash back from buying a home....unless you are having your earnest money &/or appraisal fee returned to you...this happens if you are using a loan that covers your costs and fees. Usually your appraisal is part of your closing costs (but paid for at time of appraisal), and your earnest money is applied toward your down payment, or your closing costs. Again, 85% of the time a buyer will request some of the closing costs to be paid for by the seller. The other 15% of the time a buyer will pay their own closing costs so they don't have to finance them. Right there is the REALITY of closing costs. The seller never actually 'pays' for your closing costs... the buyer is financing them into the purchase price of the home...adding the closing costs to their loan. The seller is merely accepting less than the purchase price so that the buyer can do this. If you remember ANYTHING about this email...that is what you should remember. So, if a buyer has their own down payment, the lender can also help pay closing costs, and this can be done a couple of different ways. If a buyer is using one of the down payment assistance loans or grants, or the USDA loan, the lender can't help pay those closing costs. The buyer can use their earnest money towards these though. Not asking a seller for help with closing costs does make for a 'stronger' offer, but let's be honest...that isn't always an option for a lot of people. However, if able to do so, sometimes people will use the zero down loan or the down payment assistance loans, and use the money they have for their own closing costs, but asking the seller for help with closing costs is quite common. Really it depends on many things. In short....buyers responsibility for closing costs are:* Lender's Title Insurance Policy* Half of the escrow fee* Home Inspection (paid for at time of inspection)* Recording fees* First year Homeowners Insurance Premium* First year Flood Insurance (if applies)* Pro-rated property taxes* Appraisal fee (paid for when appraisal is ordered)* Survey fee (if required)* HOA fees (if applies)* Pro-rated HOA fees (if applies)* Lender fees; appraisal fee (see above), credit report, loan origination fee, pre-paid interest, private mortgage insurance All of these fees can change depending on the title company, the lender you've hired (closing costs can differ between lenders as some charge more & some charge less), the home insurance company you are using, the home inspector you've hired, the appraisers and what they're charging (and if you need a rush), etc.. Let me see if I can't make that part a bit easier... I am going to give you 2 loans to choose from, and we are going to PRETEND that I am loaning you $1,000 for a year First loan is 0% interest. Second loan is 5% interest. What loan do you want? The 0% one, right? Most people (in the class) always choose this one, but frankly, there's not enough detail here for you choose a loan, so let's take it a step further.... I have to charge you (the buyer) closing costs. Closing costs is to pay for all those 28 people that are involved in the purchase/sale of a home. The seller has their own portion of closing costs to pay as well. On 'average', the closing costs for the seller are going to be about 8%-9% of the purchase price. Yep... there's a cost to buy a home, and a cost to sell a home too. First loan at 0% Second loan at 5% Remember...closing costs.... Bank one charges $200 Bank two charges $100 So, what happens a year from now? How much of your money do I have a year from now when you come back and pay me back my $1000 that I loaned to you? Well....let's break that down... Remember that the original $1000 doesn't count because it was already my money. I loaned it to you, and now you are paying it back to me... First loan at 0% Second loan at 5% Closing costs.... Bank one charges $200 Bank two charges $100 Interest... Bank one has 0% Bank two has $50 ---------- ------------ How much of your money do I have? With Bank one I have $200 Wit h Bank two I have $150
So with bank one it's going to cost you 20% to borrow that money for a year, & with bank two it's going to be 15%... which one is better now? This is a very simplified example, but you get it. There is a lot more to closing costs & buying a home than just interest rate. You could have an amazing, unheard of interest rate, but the costs to get that rate could end up being astronomical, and not worth it over the length of your ownership. Remember that interest rates are NOT controlled or governed by the lenders....it is by the GOVERNMENT. All lenders are very close to each other because the interest rate is not in their control. Realistically speaking it is how much they are going to CHARGE you for the loan and the interest rate that is going to matter. as always....I am available for questions...as is Chris Berg with Cardinal Financial ([email protected] or [email protected] & 503-320-0925 cell) One last thing you need to remember is that a real estate agent is not a sales person. It is not our job to 'sell' you anything. We are assistants, advisers, guidance, and help. Good luck, and as always...May the odds be ever in your favor out there.... AND If you are looking for a real estate agent, I would love to be able to help you. Creative diary #4
Starting on 23/3/2020, I will start to force myself to expand my creative and technical skills every day by keeping a diary of what I did, a public diary, so that other people can judge me or otherwise get inspiration or tips from my posts. The skills I want to improve are: drawing (especially digitally, but since I focused on that 1-2 months ago I will treat that skill seriously soon), writing, writing for games, architecture/building design (favorite tool? the sims xD) and possibly sculpting. That means I will either study those skills or practice them at least 10 minutes every day, and my posts consist of a list of what I did.
What I did today:
Some minutes writing my Skyrim fanfic [Memories of a Dragon]
Participated in a facebook discussion about how to deal with pronouns in games, [this one]. The original post and my answer can be found below:
Question:
Hey all, this is a question for those of you who have written/worked on something in English that allows for the player to select their character's gender/pronouns.
HOW do you deal with the broken circle of "him/her," "his/her," "his/hers," without putting if statements in throughout? What do you name your variables so they feel ok to write?
((EDIT FOR CLARITY: This is a situation where the character is talked about in the third person. Another way to think about it is to choose the gender your main character is attracted to.))
Bonus question: if you allow for they/them pronouns, how do you handle the pluralisation (s/he is, they are)?
My answer:
As a non-binary person, this discussion interests me greatly and it makes me happy to see so many people considering the option for they/them pronouns in games. So, I only have a few things to add, but first I will mention the things you already said here:
1) Tim Scheiman said that “Could also include both full words in the variable or macros, "he is, she is, they are"”, however, Elen Jurik already stated the problems of that solution: “this breaks the minute you change from "he walks to the store" to "they walk to the store"”
2) Elen Jurik also pointed out that “The problem isn't the programming side of it - I've been setting up variables, but specifically "him/her," "his/her," and "his/hers" don't match up nicely, and end up causing grammatical errors.” The example given was that “his = her OR hers; her = him OR his”.
3) The best idea to me was the one of Alex Woodward: “On my last project the dialogue looked like {Pronouns: They do|She does|He does}. So they was 1, she was 2, he was 3 and the code checked the variable and inserted the right phrase accordingly.” I imagine it results in fewer grammatical errors.
That said, the setting and story of the game might allow for ways to avoid the problem in multiple situations, in the situation, the protagonist receives a title and that title doesn’t change independently of the gender, ie: “Inquisitor” (Dragon Age Inquisition), “Sole Survivor” (Fallout 4), “Dragonborn” (Skyrim). Not only makes coding easier (unless there were still situations where the gender needed to be addressed), if the game has voice-acting, it’s a huge advantage because there will be less lines of dialogue to record.
In fantasy or fiction settings it may also be possible to create gender-neutral pronouns that are not they/them. Not everyone would be pleased, but since most games don’t give options for non-binary people to exist in the first place, I doubt we would focus too much on that. So you could create pronouns that are gender neutral AND singular, and that way the only thing that has to change is the pronouns itself, not the verb. In a personal project, I had the idea of creating the pronouns “hey/hem/heir”. Examples: “Hey walks to the store”, “This is heir house” or “I used to see hem as a friend, but not anymore”. That looks strange but it’s quite easy to pronounce when reading a sentence, partly because it starts with an “h” like the feminine/masculine pronouns (so it even makes the language more consistent), and it’s also easy to associate that with the plural and gender-neutral pronouns of the English language. When this is possible, then it solves the problem mentioned in (1). Feel free to use the pronouns I invented if you like it.
If a non-binary character can be romanced, this is just a reminder that boyfriend/girlfriend can be easily converted to partner/lover and that even works for binary genders. Husband/wife, father/mother, dad/mom and others are a little harder and generate lots of discussion in the non-binary community. And don’t forget that if the non-binary character has brothers/sisters, they can be referred to as sibling or sib.
Last but not least, I’m from Portugal, and I’ve seen people here ask if you had the intention of translating the game into other languages. In Portuguese, like in most latin-based languages, even our plural is gendered and there is no official way to make a sentence gender-neutral. It’s really complicated. Most translations end up referring in a binary way to characters who are non-binary or whose gender is unknown, usually based on what the character looks like, which is really invalidating. That said, if the creators of the stories – games, books, movies… - have any say in the translation, I suggest looking individually to what the non-binary community uses in each language. That may be tricky to find and get diverse results, so I will advance that in Portuguese, most people who bother to try, as I do sometimes, use “Elu” instead of “Ela/Ele”, words finished in “a/o” are finished with “e” and the article “a/o” that precedes nouns is often omitted, though that’s the less consensual part. I’ve posted a study of the advantages and disadvantages of all possibilities I have ever seen someone use/consider, in Portuguese, so if anyone here speaks that language or wants to recommend something about this to a person who speaks Portuguese, here you have it: https://caixinha-any.blogspot.com/2018/11/pros-e-contras-das-varias-formas-de.html

Juniper Publishers-Gerontological Communication
Letter to Editor
The communication is an essential element of life, we could say that to communicate is to live, is a cross-disciplinary subject and what is called Social Communication can never be divorced from any task involving promotive activities or development plans, it is a matter that is not exclusive to journalists or communicators, and should be an essential part of professional training in general. Communicate is to express, to say, to call, to summon, to inform, to imply to agree, to lead, to advise, to influence, to draw attention to something, to discover with the weapon of language, observation, reflection and analysis. And there are many ways of communicating, different languages spoken, written, mimic, the language used must be the one that is adapted to each human situation or condition and the language is impregnated with the cultural or subcultural legacy, prejudices, myths, beliefs and often influenced by passions or hatred.
The societies evolve but many prejudices, taboos, are maintained and are necessary to implement public policies that fight these obstacles of cultural development that is united to the great problem of the discrimination, an age group as important as the older adult, in spite of many efforts still occupy a secondary place in our society, despite its real importance and going against the reality of its great contribution to the nation, and that only a minority are what the language of discrimination calls "old people” in the sense of dependency.
What we think and what we feel will be what our words express and only the one who is convinced of what he says can really influence others, you can not convince anyone if you are not convinced, so you communicate correctly, so too by the need for a process of reflection, and there is a language that is adapted to the reality of the older adult and social attitude, the image of the older adult is slowly changing, is generating a new respect and that new vision, real elderly person, banished by necessity and with basic terms such as old or old, is in some way creating a new reality and that brings us a new language, a new, fairer view of reality.
That is why people who work with older adults should lead and be promoters of a new concept of aging and their words be accompanied by actions and inspire them to know, reflect and love.
Respect is not only not to insult, it is to treat them as older adults who are, as important people, even if they are really vulnerable or with dementia, to express themselves with the elderly with the greatest dignity and consideration. We will analyze the importance of this language, of this great and deserved respect and the image of the older adult today.
The aging process begins well before the age of 60, but it is true that at older age, more discrimination exists and although people over the age of 35 are already discriminated against at work, the perception is that they are "old” a lot later, that vision of what is called old age, considers essentially certain visible physical changes where at that age they are usually more emotional, obviously a superficial vision that scorns the older adult in itself, for its aspect of "old”, without considering other variables, in which people they reach a creative, intellectual or artistic development after the barrier estimated above the age of 60, and which are based on a culture that exalts youth, seeing in such old age only decay and end of life.
The aging process is for everyone, but the most obvious discrimination is the older adult, the statistics themselves deny the false perception that the older adult is a decadent, dependent or weak subject. In recent years, there has been an increase in the social participation of the elderly, with various activities that show us learning new things, using modern technological tools, capable of changing their view of things and this new view justifies the fact that let us leave aside the terms of another "reality”, of a great persistent myth. Lamentable the role of large mass media that continue to emit images of a weak older person, and shows us as a second class citizen, just as someone who needs help, the typical "old man” of the news.
Claro also show us phenomenal "elders" who are seen as oddities to amuse the public. In our country and safe in many brother countries, almost all journalists refuse to call people aged 60, without leaving the associated language, to a different reality, a language contaminated with a deprecated vision of the reality of the elderly. In a way, in all professions there are vices and what we name here, is stubbornness, a kind of rebellion before what they seem to consider "official language" or tax, for my part there is no official language but correct and this can be varied or to qualify. And in all this that the older adult thinks, in our country they do not like to be called old or old, little by little, self-image evolves, as the new image of the older adult grows. But there is also the low self-esteem of the marginalized, of the despised who will always be low and can accept almost any word that contains contempt, so we have much to do to make the elderly adults more empowered.
Now the terrible manipulation of commercial television offers "what people like," supposedly no one likes "old", except to be pitied or laughed at, commercial media underestimate citizens, induce and manipulate the " taste of people". State institutions and civil organizations carry out various activities promoting older adults and aging, such as educational events, forums, workshops, commemorative events, workshops, and work meetings, but the question is the effectiveness of these activities can have, as far as the idea of promoting, is to influence citizenship to improve the image of the elderly and reduce levels of discrimination and poor attitudes towards older adults, where there are various types of violence, almost "Institutionalized" The most notorious defects are at the origin of many promoter activities that is the lack of conviction and therefore of mere compliance, many events and groups of activities are made for a small group of representatives or professionals, in an effort to avoid costs, when it is necessary to reach more people and what is also serious, the little importance they give to the diffusion of such events, diffusion before and after realized.
In that sense, promoter activities are absolutely ineffective and serve only as a signal that officials and organizers work and they add compliance bonuses. There are working meetings with interesting speeches, but to which they do not follow conclusions for the taking of concrete actions, and they become a simple exhibition of knowledge or sterile competences as long as an action is not collected from it. It is necessary to create an interinstitutional network that is taken seriously not to make mere exhibitionism of intellectualism or party, but to draw conclusions and actionable plans of action and this requires commitment and perhaps a quota of sacrifice, are promoted and they celebrate laws but they neglect the preventive factor of education and the possibility of an articulate permanent campaign that can really raise awareness and influence.
Promotion without diffusion, is wasting resources and talents, and achieves only inefficiency, which only serves to the applause of the audience and then pure oblivion, and we must remember that the public is no longer informed as before and the internet media are fundamental to the creation of the permanent campaign, it is not enough to work, you have to prove that you work. If we want to advance faster in the promotion of the elderly, positive aging and gerontological culture, it is necessary not neglect, assertive language, ie honest, direct and clear, as well as respectful and appropriate, say what you think and feel , to impact consciences and to break up perhaps a cold sterile academicism.
Always with the development of societies is accompanied by a certain inertia, which slows down and extinguishes enthusiasm, assertive language is the language of leadership, intelligent and emotional at the same time and therefore is our weapon against the coldness of sterile academicism. Knowing how to express something correctly and passionately at the same time should be the gerontological promoter's leading weapon, to influence, to convince, using what is usually called emotional intelligence. The true commitment is rational and emotional at the same time, it allows to analyze the receiver of the message, convince, does not impose or threat, so if one has a gerontological vision and real commitment this is his language, and also leaves aside inadequate or outdated terms, to name the people and express new respect for a new vision of aging.
And the misuse of an inadequate gerontological language, in front of the elderly and the community is a gravitating error in the gerontological promoter, together with bad humor and authoritarian gestures, the lack of commitment generates many errors that bring by logic bad results. The Gerontological Promoter must consider as a priority, the crucial issue, the dissemination of promotional activities, promote is to make public the work done for the good of the community and we must know with what means of dissemination we can count. We all know that the commercial media almost totally ignore the older adult theme and gerontology and it is very difficult to access them, when we achieve something of such means is merely occasional, not systematic and do not think that we should blow the bells to fly, and think because I got a note once, it will always be.
We must think about the means that are truly within our reach and that can always be with us, we must keep in mind that preferences and orientations are changing towards the digital world and that technology with its variety of devices puts the internet closer to the people, both because of it and the cheapening of the network costs and the large amount of public that navigates and above all enters the social networks. The traditional media are behind in gerontological information and the internet media generate great alternatives, latelevision, radio can provide programs but the internet generates alternative media, information systems and gerontological information networks, which exceed by hundreds the commercial offer of traditional media.
The idea is for the promoter to maintain contact with the commercial media if possible, but it is time to take the initiative and use the means that are truly available to the citizen and create their spaces in the network, pages, blogs, groups, with a permanent work communicator and linker, join with other pages, groups and blogs, promoters must have public profiles that allow them to go acquiring many friends, followers and contacts, join larger networks and support the small, publishing is always fundamental, choose the publications well according to the objectives drawn, and have the public they wish to have. It is good to have several social networks that are linked to each other, all this will result in an increasing positioning of the institution for which you work, it is not enough to work, you have to prove that you work.
Older people are constantly increasing in the internet and social networks and in a few years will multiply because of the large number of people over 50 who remain online, social networks as spaces of communication between people, have evolved into communities in network, in constant interaction. The social networks allow a tremendous interaction, and a repercussion of the news, comcomientes, shared and the so- called "rebounds", the systematic use of networks to publish news and capture networks tends to increase, while prejudices against social networks lose floor. They are places where we see news, we learn, we entertain and at the same time we communicate, that combination that is not possible in other means, strengthens the great change in progress, the move of the public to the internet media.
The gerontological promoter must polish and revise his communicational tools, his use of the appropriate language, the expression that generates confidence and the ideas must be exposed with clarity and conviction, so that the proposals in favor of the older adult, are accepted, before, by the elderly themselves. Never think of imposing an idea, however brilliant that we believe it to be, we must listen to others and perhaps this idea will develop better and be more successful and viable. It is necessary to achieve consensus and adequately substantiate. Once consensus has been reached, seek a broad participation of others in the implementation, generate a joyful commitment and this will be a success.
When it comes to organizing an event that is commemorative, festive or educational, keep in mind always, that being such an event a promoter activity, it needs an adequate diffusion. Dissemination is a fundamental element for the success of an event and should be an integral part of the plan of this activity, with what means will be counted, since the gerontological promoter should contribute to improving the image of the elderly, influencing people and both must always have a public profile, a communicating attitude and open to information. It is important to establish communication alliances in social networks, with other institutions and gerontological projects that go in a similar way, the type, style or quality of what you publish will form your audience, unite, interact, connect are actions that do not have loses, the big favors the small and the small to the big, to relate is to grow, isolation is the worst, of work, where little is published, or almost nothing will be no public and the lack of publications will lead to failure the project.
If a gerontological institution has few activities, it is obliged to share interesting information so as not to discourage readers from related themes and interesting for the elderly or their family and professional environment. We have to work seriously the means at our disposal, we review statistics, we must set goals and always have adequate and favorable institutional relationships. Avoid linking with institutions or people with questions, which affect the institutional image and observe transparency in the promotion, be truthful and persevering in dissemination. It is possible to say that the communicating attitude is the opposite of covering up, and must therefore generate confidence, the truth can not be harmful, only the lie is, we are always ready to publish and relate well and with optimism, seriousness and work will be achieved. Objectives of adequately promoting the older adult and the gerontological culture.
There are many who consider that anonymity should be helped and without publicity, many argue in this argument to opt for an anti-communication option that often serves to cover up the lack of work and bad practices. Society, the elderly, need to know, with whom it can count and also have the right to demand transparency from the institutions and this goes also to private organizations. Transparency implies the need to inform about the activities that are carried out, and the sources of financing, it is necessary to know with which people leaders must be visible, the objectives and mission of such institutions must be known and their activities should be consistent with what they propose.
Anyone who speaks in favor of older adults and claims to have a supportive organization on their behalf is bound to have a public profile and a communicating attitude. We need institutions that are positioned, manifest their work and their objectives by the means at our disposal, that make known its name and its leaders. We talked about the proper use of internet media, the fact of having a website or a blog, or both, of having spaces in the main social networks like facebook, twitter, Google +, LinkedIn and Pinterest, a YouTube channel. It is very important that the institution and even those who lead appear in the public light and make themselves known. It is clear that there are also those who make themselves known in a biased way, they advertise focusing on a single place concealing, so it is necessary that there is an attitude of transparency showing their work their sources of financing and resource management, institutions are needed trustworthy with honest leaders.
