of the many injustices put forth toward the show by fans i think the most overall damaging and telling of a complete lack of critical viewership is the idea that sam riegel builds his characters with nothing more than the bit in mind. like you are only telling on yourself if you think characters like scanlan shorthalt and veth brennato are one-dimensional and depthless

#if im being exTREMEly generous i can maybe understand this view of scanlan if you started c1 and then gave up 30 episodes later #he played the long game with him more than any other and a lot of his growth could be looked at as shallow if you DIDNT watch til the payoff #but any time this opinion is used as a blanket over all of his characters including tary and even FCG.. like be serious #i mean at this point im definitely biased bc he is my favorite player at the table. However. that wasnt always the case #and even when i was myself writing some character choices off i NEVER applied that to the characters themselves. how can you??#seen sooo many ppl criticize him for making veth an alcoholic or scanlan irreverent & hedonistic as tho it’s only possible #to play these traits as shallow jokes or at best played out satire…. and then the same person will turn around #and praise how percy was built to be pompous & superior and jester immature & self-centered and caleb steeped in self-effacing hubris #why are these characters and their players given a near universal acceptance of nuance and acknowledgement of growth & healing #but SAMS CHARACTERS ARE NOT!!!!#this turned into such a rant but it bothers me SO much. everyone at the cr table is so goddamned talented #and takes the game as seriously as it deserves #so many more points i could argue but this is already so goddamn long no one is reading this far. i love sam and all of his characters <333 #critical role #sam riegel #scanlan shorthalt #veth brennato #my posts

I loved them.

I can’t wait to see Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor again.

I just know that he is going to be fantastic.

i love them very much, fourteen and donna are so dear and beloved to me, but i’ve been waiting for fifteen for aaaages like damn… smack my ass and call me The One Who Waits bc i’ve been so so so patient and rtd has given me CRUMBS. i’ve been luxuriating in Ncuti’s wonderful performance so far and watching all the released scenes/trailers, and i can tell he’s gonna be absolutely brilliant. already is. i’m chuffed, couldn’t be happier :)

i’ve been listening to/watching many (many, many) reactions to steven universe (because that’s what you do when you become newly obsessed with something. see what everyone else thinks about it and drive yourself mad) and it’s so interesting to see all the unique ways people tackle it and the common threads between them all.

there’s podcast recaps (pressure to over-analyze) vs youtube reactions (pressure to overreact). everyone knowing the show (yay) vs fans guiding newcomers (interesting) vs everybody being blind (often disastrous). don’t mind silly fun? they love the first season and amethyst’s character. told about how ~deep~ it gets and expecting only that? they love pearl and have to be dragged through the beginning. even how they chunk the episodes affects things—in watching episode-by-episode, people go the most mad as they try to squeeze meaning out of episodes they can’t yet appreciate until later (or are just. bad at analyses.). in chunks of two, people assume su will have much more horror after watching frybo and cat fingers back-to-back. and chunks of 5 are completely different too!

this only skims the surface. i can watch any episode of su and point out which jokes usually make people laugh, what people pick up on, and how their opinion of the situation reflects on whether they have mommy issues.

#steven universe #the ‘thats what you do’ comment was a joke ftr #i love seeing yt comments be filled with the same people btwn diff channels #bc i know they’re on my journey too!#the most popular one is s/orta stupid reacts bc they are quite intelligent and respectful #s/putnik’s spyglass is fun bc u can tell the reactor got truly invested!!#g/allifrey gals gets so emotional even at the ��silly’ episodes they’re my favorite ;-;#s/pilling the milk is stupid humor. but they genuinely love the show and will defend it ALWAYS #(though it’s more apparent if you watch their uncut reactions and watch them wrangle twitch chat)#podcasts have been more disastrous for me.. the hyper-analysis format for newcomers not only sets up unfair expectations for the show #but also are almost always all over the place which is the podcasters’ decisions!!#they can talk about their personal lives! i’m listening to it all for free #(also it’s funny bc 99% of podcasters say how no one is watching them meanwhile im there. watching them.)#but it’s just not as enjoyable. also they tend to have really annoying opinions srry.#had to listen to two guys seriously discuss steven and amethyst as a ship. without mention of the age gap WTF?#and in another some guy said how ‘he can’t consider su best television if they keep having silly episodes’#acting all pretentious like know your genre smh #oh and podcasters tend to be guys so i have also listened to guys be like sadie and amethyst r so ugly :/#and ‘when will there be male gems i can’t relate to any of the characters if they’re all girls #oh there’s steven? he’s a fat kid though’#<-none of these are exaggerations it’s really painful #for podcasts i recommend ‘the b/its su podcast’! they’ve watched it all before and everyone’s queer so it’s all great :)#it’s still ongoing too #now i sound harsh on podcasts bc i don’t mention the bad yt reactions ive seen #(and i’ve seen them)#but idk there’s not many good reaction podcasts #now you may be reading this and think i’m writing wayy too much on the topic of reactions random ppl on the internet have for a show #and you’d be right. BUT i’m like those little kids that get frustrated when a movie has no interactability #i have to listen to people say the s1 finale was underwhelming as i scream in my head how they’re watching the wrong order bc h/bo max sucks #yes i have gone crazy. i truly mean it when i say i have watched and listened to SO MANY of these

2023 in review! I made an effort to try more things and it worked mostly (at least for TV and movies). New things, new-to-me things, and new installments of old things all had characters to love even if I didn't necessarily feel fannish about them, and I'm hoping 2024 does, too.

#but yeah no I had a lot of fun with some of these #mp100 is now fully going down as one of my favorite works of art ever. i mean it. i'd stick it on a shelf with discworld.#trying Nida Manzoor's work was SO GOOD like if edgar wright knew how to make girls lovable I meant to only try one episode of WALP #and then I marathonned it all in one night right into the sunrise and I do not regret it #(look I love edgar wright but)#i had my issues with GO2 and Fionna & Cake and HxH (which I finally tried yes I am late) but still they had babies in them #one piece and the last of us did like major progress for proving those mediums *could* be adapted and not suck so seriously kudos #I didn't go into Barbie expecting it to Solve Capitalism and The Patriarchy so I appreciate what it did do #Nimona was just gorgeous #Across the spider-verse is so good it's hard to say anything about it #Peacemaker is obnoxiously good and Chris's breakdown near the end really got me #Bottoms & Marry My Dead Body & Ying-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity are just fun okay don't think about it #the strange planet show was sweet and peaceful to watch #and even with a 40% budget cut OFMD has my heart and ed is The babygirl of all time for me #thanks for reading these tags if you did and I hope you have a good new year #art i'm proud of

#i love swifties for a lot of reasons but one of my favorites is that ultimately they're extremely predictable #i mean this soooo lovingly like this isn't a hate post at all. they're a lot like taylor in this exact way which makes sense #like every time without fail they will receive information completely out of context and go into fight mode over it #and not once do they seek the full story or question the inflammatory way headlines convey info for clicks because #they don't even click lmaooo #and most of the time they blow stuff out of proportion and upon discovering it just pack it up and move on so like #they're pretty harmless in that regard. they're just extremely passionate and thereby reactionary and its fun to watch #and makes me laugh every single time it happens which is quite often. entertaining to me to watch the rise of vitriol and then #the subsequent cool down of oops we took things out of context again and reacted emotionally about our blonde woman #like this week its the tweet going around about the NYT ranking the albums which is NOT AT ALL WHAT THEY DID #the popcast is a podcast where many writers and critics talk music very seriously and smartly and fairly yess #but the popcast (deluxe) is a secondary show where two of the main hosts shoot the shit and talk about personal opinions #and how would swifties know that i know and i don't blame them for not knowing that but if you give it a little bit of idk #looking into or give it a listen you would find that #in this one episode they didn't even rank them definitively they just talked about their personal favs and not favs #ranking the album based on their personal opinions really #and one guy who is a huge rep stan and a folklore hater proclaimed rep his fav and evermore his least fav #and the other guy who is a folklore/early taylor stan and modern taylor hater said speak now was his fav and midnights his least #that's all like that's literally all it was alsdkjfslkfkldfj #but now the nyt music desk is considered this Evil Entity of No Taste and its like man..... here we go again hahahahahah #i'm not discoursing or mad about it i'm just like lmaoooooooooo CLASSIC swiftie move #anyway i love the popcast guys and i love the nyt music desk and think they're one of the last bastions of great music criticism #one things swifties are gonna do is take the click bait and CHOMP on it. i gotta get up and fish the hook out of their cheek

1) Three non-romantic duos: Hmmm...brotps I adore would be Jack and Daniel (SG-1), Sam and Daniel (SG-1), and Lune and Matsen (Jade Torch -- is it cheating to use my own book??? xD) If that's cheating, then Sam and Frodo (LotR).

2) A ship that might surprise others: I kinda ship Link x Mipha from BOTW. I like Zelda x Link too, but something about Link x Mipha is just so sweet and tragic. I like that they knew each other for a lot longer than Zelda and Link knew each other.

Let's be real. I don't have a lot of crazy ships. Although, in SG-1, I do ship Vala x Tomin (but I also like Vala x Daniel).

3) Last Song: Shackleton by Adam Young

4) Last Film: My parents and I watched Hitched for the Holidays last night. Very funny romcom with Joey Lawrence. It's a Hallmark movie from 2012, so just before they all got so unbelievably cookie cutter/copy+paste with their plots.

6) Currently watching: The X-Files. I'm nearing the end of season 1. I've never seen it before, and I'm loving it!

#i am in a massive stargate phase right now #i almost put john and rodney as the third brotp but i wanted to include something non stargate #and seriously. i am enjoying the x-files SO MUCH!!!!!!!!#the alien episodes are my favorite and i wish there were more of those and fewer of the ghost/spirit ones #but oh well #and can i say? mulder and scully's dynamic is perfection #not just how they trust each other or tease each other but how they physically behave with one another #the acting choices seem very deliberate #mulder wears his heart on his sleeve and i am living for that #and he's big on touch. not in a creepy way at all #but he's constantly putting his hand on her shoulder or gently placing his hand on her back to steer her #so much of it is 100% unnecessary for the scene so it feels like very deliberate acting choice regarding the character #and it doesn't phase scully a bit #even in the first few episodes when they've only known each other a few months or less she has no issue with how familiar mulder acts #again. i need to emphasize---it never comes across as creepy just really cute and tender #i really really like how she is SO TINY compared to him and i think his physicality and protectiveness is emphasized by that #but at the same time he knows she's fully capable #he seems protective of her but not in a demeaning way. not overprotective. just lots of chivalry and honor #that's something that seems totally lost in media today: men who want to protect women just because that's what they should be doing #and women who let them #too many women get bent out of shape when men try to be gentlemen #women have tried to wipe out chivalry and then they turn around and complain about toxic masculinity 🙄#but mulder is a wonderful gentleman and i love watching him and scully #tagged #sorry for going off in the tags but i've been wanting to rave about this stuff for a few days now xD

they made Cleo a lesbian which is all I ever wanted but I can't even appreciate it because they handled it so fucking badly because this season's showrunners are allergic to having genuine authentic character moments that matter and I hate being upset but I AM

I've only been a Doctor Who fan for a few weeks, but the husbands of river song is probably one of the best episodes. As someone who loves any episode that includes River Song and having the 12th doctor as my favorite. It's just full of so many little details of how they really love each other. Twelve getting jealous of River kissing other men and calling them her husband, twelve constantly trying to hint to her he's The Doctor, her love declaration for the Doctor thinking he doesn't love her, him asking why she looks sad about her diary, "Hello, Sweetie", and 24 years in a single night. Need I go on? I wish they got more than that one episode together. The ending makes me sob because of how romantic and sad it is because the next time River sees the Doctor, she's going to die. What's worse, he won't even remember who she is.
