really interesting look at Reagan era hegemonic ideals in Serial Mom (1994), and hegemonic negotiation therin- i love touching on the satanic panic and the idea that horror, gore, porn, and ""immoral"" behaviour (in the eyes of the catholic church) is what 'drives' someone to these actions. it also is very much a product of its time.

the 'default' family is the white hetero couple with two children. they have the bread winner, a dentist, a stay at home mom, an older son with a job, and a daughter who moons over shitty boys. you can draw direct lines between movies like Back To The Future, with the two kids, stay at home mom, the 'default' family.

probably around a 6/10, very interesting, very odd, very early 90s

Kathleen Turner was both sweet and psychotic in this. And Sam Waterston was sweet and innocnt, defending his wife.

This is the most underrated film ever! One of my favorite movies of all time Note-John waters is the greatest filmmaker
