there it is again:   that familiar feeling she gets in the pit of her stomach every time diana smiles at her—   or when she says something like that,   something that seems to easy to say yet pippa wouldn’t expect it from even those she thinks she’s closest with.    she does love her friends, but when she's around diana, it's not lost on her that there's so much about her that they can't even begin to understand. it's not like pippa's trying to open up, either; having friends at all is still new to her, which is what she tries to remind herself when diana is the one making her feel so nervous yet so giddy. that's normal, right?

❝ you’re,  like,  one of the most well-liked people i know….   ❞     she points out,  her words trailing off because that's so different than anything she's ever known herself. she noticed it as soon as she met diana —  she was popular for good reason, adored because she deserved it; from where pippa's standing, she assumes diana doesn't have to fake her way through it the way she has. but the person she's gotten to know recently is still different than the person she once assumed she was, based solely off the company she keeps and her part in her friend's suffering. but pippa knows better than that; she knows not to trust the way stephen twists everything around him. she starts to smile, a soft laugh falling from her lips as she shakes her head, trying to act casual about it. ❝  i think i like you better than anyone i know, too, ❞ she realizes it in real time that her words are true, that she's never felt like this around anyone else. not her friends, not wrigley, just her. it's not just happy, it's safe. ❝  guess that means we kind of belong together, right? ❞ she asks, her tone joking yet hopeful at the same time.

     Which is why she’s with her now, leading her back to the Little Palace. It had been Nikolai’s insistence — having at least one grisha who would answer to him before Alina, just in case, if Tamar and Tolya were so settled in their alliance with their new saint. The twins are walking behind them, Mal a little further back; Mal, at least, has the decency to look embarrassed, even if Alina is still defiant and annoyed and, rather sweetly, Astoria thinks, trying to pull rank. 

     “You’re still grisha,” Alina shoots back, and Astoria takes a step back to bow dramatically. 

     “And when you put a kefta on me, moi soverenyi, then you can tell me to do whatever you’d like, but I’m just a simple soldier.”

     Alina scowls, but after a moment she deflates. “How did he know I’d be out here?”

     “The captain? He asked himself, what is the most foolish thing she could do to endanger herself, and this was the answer. It was more a suspicion, really. He just wanted me to check, and be sure. He asked me to bring him back a bottle of something, too, so I’ll have to double back, but it’s a beautiful night for a long walk with a woman who has no sense of the danger she’s in.” 

     Still scowling, Alina deliberately looks away from her. She’s lovely even in a foul mood, Astoria thinks, and for a moment she entertains the thought of kissing her in the moonlight, but the idea passes, mostly when she realizes that Alina is also clenching her fists at her sides and looks about ready to settle things like she would have at Keramzin. Astoria sighs, then holds out a hand to stop her, before turning around to face the others.

     “Fall back and fan out,” she says sweetly.

     Tolya frowns. “Why?”

     “Girl talk.” She turns around again, hooking her arm through Alina’s, and Alina, despite her apparent surprise and what Astoria can only assume is a growing irritation, picks up the pace to match her speed until the others are out of earshot. Only then do they slow, and Astoria unlinks her arm from Alina’s.

     Alina stares back at her sullenly, and Astoria sighs.

     “Is it Mal? Is that what this is about?”

     “I can’t do something just because I want to do it?”

     “You can,” Astoria says patiently, “but you can also act your age, and that means, sometimes, doing foolish things for a moment alone with a boy you love.” 

     Alina almost flinches at that, and she looks about a foot to the left of Astoria’s head, refusing to meet her eyes. 

     “Were you hurt?”

     “No. Just startled.”

     “The next time you want to have a moment alone, sneak up to the roof with a guard posted there. Tell me so I can stand guard while you two make eyes at each other in the gardens. Have me guard your bedroom door while you break in the furniture. I don’t care what it is; I’ll give you whatever privacy you need, but we cannot risk your safety, sweet saint. You’re too important to us.”

     “Too important to Nikolai, you mean?” Alina shoots back, meeting Astoria’s eyes again, and Astoria sighs, gathers Alina’s hands in her own, brings them both up to press a kiss to each of her palms. 

     “Yes, to him, and to the country, and to me. I answer to my captain but as far as I’m concerned, Alina, I’m still your friend. I can keep your secrets. I can guard your trysts. I can brush your hair and tease you about the longing stares. But I can’t bring you back from the dead.” 

     She releases her hands, reaches up to brush an unruly strand of hair back from her face, links arms with her again so they can resume their walk. You would make a good queen someday, she thinks, not now, not while you fight what it means to belong to a people rather than yourself. But tonight, she can belong to herself, Astoria thinks; Nikolai will do without his bottle of something strong, and Astoria will brush Alina’s hair and tease her about the longing stares and pretend she doesn’t daydream about kissing her under the moonlight, and tonight, Alina can be just Alina. No one’s saint, no one’s queen, no one’s last hope. 

     Just Alina.

Would the Gemini twins ever say something worrying during an interview WITHOUT REALISING that it's worrying. Like, after they're injured badly during a round, they get asked how they're doing and mention their medical treatment is awful for long term health or something like that

I don't think they'd ever say anything THAT obvious, especially since their major injuries are not known to the public, but things like this have happened before. For the most part, they have 'scripts' that they work off of, but obviously, in an interview, there has to be some level of improv. There have been times when they'll say something that, to them, is totally normal, but to an outsider can be concerning. For example, how excited they are to be here because they so rarely get to go out, details of the Nexus training regime they've been following since they were eight, an off-hand remark about an injury received in battle or their medical knowledge, etc. Often the interviewer will pick up on this and hone in, and the twins will quickly backpedal and change the subject, but the damage is already done. This happens rarely, however, because they're VERY well versed in what is and is not OK to talk about, and they tend to air on the side of "if you're not sure, don't say it."

Plus, every time they DO misstep like this during an interview, Mama's displeasure is very quickly made clear to them. It's only happened a few times because every time it happens they very much do not want it to happen again.
