alicent hightower reminds me of serena joy. both are gender traitors that think they can control a system designed to reduce all women to cattle as a woman—highborn or not. only difference is that serena is actually a well written character that realizes her faults, whereas alicent never does until she’s basically on her deathbed. girlie thought she could play the game of thrones and win and all she got was dead sons, daughter, grandsons, and granddaughter while rhaenyra’s son ascended the throne 🤣

Now I feel so bad for everything I said about Serena Joy cuz while she did horrible things and deserved karma I had to rewatch the show several times to understand how she developed Stockholm syndrome before the events of the first episode, believed that her husband truly loves her and that he's her whole world, and I feel bad that I laughed at how Serena didn't realize that she shouldn't be sad that he's dead cuz he couldn't hurt her anymore.

I have like a whole analysis in my head on this, but just for now I'll make it short. She wasn't just a victim of abuse, she suffered from Stockholm syndrome as well and Fred brainwashed her. Only after his death she understood that June wasn't just another woman he cheated on her with but that she was also his victim and that his death was a good thing for her to finally move on with a child that she wanted so much.

Most people would have hardened their hearts to their oppressor

But when June's watching Serena plead for mercy in 5x7 when her baby is taken away- she sees herself in that bed, and she knows it's wrong to separate a mother from her child.

I hope Serena gets the meta level of that in S6 and works to end the systems she created in Gilead.

I hope she writes another book entitled "whoops I fucked up- NEVER give your rights away."

I hope she uses her maiden name this time.

The one thing I don't see Serena's stans talk about which is the one thing that makes me believe she can always change is how she's willing to trade her happiness for her child's/children's. I'm not a fan of her as such I'm more of a fan of the way she's written so much things that make her character so complicated and unique but she had a chance two times to be a mother - something she was obsessed with for years - and when it happened the first time she gave the baby to a woman she hates to save her because she wanted Nicole to be safe and she was scared and miserable and weak and in that weakest moment you see that Serena would save not just her baby but also her enemy if that means that her baby will be safe even if that means she will never see her again. And then the second time she suprised me even more cuz she actually thought she was going to either be a handmaid or die and she wanted that same enemy to save her baby and raise her and didn't ask for June to save her but her child and for June to raise him too so that her baby will be safe again. She has so many problems she has to deal with but she is a good mother especially when Fred is not around she is a much better person.
