Take Me Over
[Nick Blaine x Wife!Reader]
Synopsis: In the heart of Gileadās oppressive regime, you find yourself thrust into a marriage with Nick Blaine, a man whose silent demeanor hides a truth youāve realized to be shared.
WC: 2189
Category: Lime/Spice, Slight Fluff {TW ā Forced Marriage}
Iām back at it again with another character that no one seems to write about š„² (I love him your honor)
ćā¢ā¢āā¢ā¢ć
The dim light of the candles flickered in the oppressive silence of the room. You sat on the edge of the bed, your hands tightly gripping the stack of letters tied together by a brown string while you contemplated what you were about to do.
Itās been a total of two days since you were placed to be a part of the household of Commander Fred and Mrs. Waterford. Two days since you were forced into a role that you were not comfortable with. Two days since a new life was placed before you.
Two days since your marriage, and now here you are, sitting on the edge of a bed, dreading the moment that the door would open and once again reveal the man who was forced to be your husband.
Nick Blaine, that was his name, and it was all that was given to you. You knew nothing about him. All you knew was that you were his wife, and he was your husband, and you both had a role to play. Though, if the letters that you currently held in your hands were anything to go by, Nick Blaine, your husband, played the role of a rebel.
Shock. It was the first thing that you felt when you discovered the stack of letters hidden behind one of the drawers in the room. Then, curiosity. What exactly were they? You were so intrigued that you couldn't help yourself. You had to find out.
You didnāt regret it.
You didn't even want to.
What you had found was something you could not believe. Something so secret and dangerous that you could not fathom. The contents of the letters, the words written upon the papers, were like a breath of fresh air.
Stories, that's what they were. Stories that you would tell in hushed whispers. Stories that were passed around. Stories of the world before Gilead.
They seemed to be all handmaids. Handmaids telling their side of the story. Brave women who would take such risks, who would defy the rules, just to let their voices be heard.
They were inspiring, and as you read through them, you realized the more dangerous these letters were, the more powerful. And the more powerful they were, the more they were needed.
It was a small act of defiance, but it was enough. It was something that could keep the flame of hope alive, and that is exactly what they needed in the current situation.
But the question still stands. What was Nick Blaine doing with them?
You werenāt sure how you were supposed to feel, especially now that you were aware that a man of his stature and position could risk everything for the sake of those who were fighting against Gilead.
So many things were racing in your mind, but then it hit you. The soft glow in his eyes whenever Waterfordās handmaiden was around. The way he looked at her. Sympathy and guilt. He cared for her.
The revelation was almost jarring, but you werenāt too surprised. Nick always seemed different from the others. Hell, itās been two days, and he hasnāt touched you.
You could almost guarantee that all the other men who were promoted and newly married would have already taken their wives by now. They wouldāve taken their wife that night after the ceremony. But not him. Not Nick.
You were grateful.
He had a heart, and that's all that mattered.
A knock on the door snapped you back into reality, and before you could even respond, the door was opening.
It was Nick.
For a split second, the two of you just stared at each other, his eyes moving in slow motion as they trailed from your face to the stack of letters you were holding.
Of course, as he did so, all you could do was look at him in admiration. He was always easy on the eyes before, with hair and eyes that were darker than the luxurious dark chocolate you once loved to eat before Gilead. But, knowing what you know now, everything about him was just much more attractive.
But then, a flicker of fear was shown in his eyes, and all at once, the atmosphere seemed to grow tense.
Without saying a word, Nick stepped into the room and closed the door behind him. You could visibly see a sweat drop trickling down his neck as he tried to compose himself, his eyes never leaving the letters that were clutched tightly in your hands.
"Nick." You whispered, and you could see him stiffen at the mention of his name. The poor man was terrified, and it was heartbreaking.
"How much did you read?" His voice was rough and gravelly, and the sound was music to your ears.
"Enough." You answered, and without missing a beat, you slowly stood up and began to make your way toward him. "Enough to know I can trust you."
Your response was met with a surprised look, and it was clear to you that he was not expecting that. Truthfully, you were surprised yourself.
This was all new to you. You've never spoken so freely before, and you never expected the day would come when you would have the courage to defy the rules. But today was a strange day.
"Iāve never believed in miracles," You whispered, taking a few steps forward. Your eyes were locked with his, and you could see the surprise and curiosity swirling around in his beautiful, dark brown eyes. "but you might be the closest thing to one I could get."
A soft smile tugged at your lips as you slowly walked towards him, and as the two of you were only mere inches away from each other, you raised the stack of letters and gently pushed it towards him.
"You need to do better than hiding them behind a drawer, though. I almost tripped on it when it fell out." You said, and for the first time since you had met him, you saw his lips curl up into a ghost of a smile.
"Noted."
And then the two of you lapsed into silence. A comfortable silence that was filled with the soft glow of the candle and the faint crackling sound of the fire.
That night was the night your trust was built and the beginning of a bond that would eventually bring the two of you together.
It was a couple of months later, when he returned from Canada with the Waterfords, that your relationship from close friends to lovers began.
Heād gotten the letters out. Heād finally gotten them out, and as the news of the failed union between Canada and Gilead left his lips, all you could think about was the relief and the excitement.
Your heart was overflowing with joy, and your body was filled with a sense of warmth that you had long forgotten. Nick had done it. Nick had finally done it.
As soon as he finished recounting, you rushed to embrace him. A strong grip wrapped itself around his waist, and your face nuzzled into the crook of his neck.
Nick, on the other hand, was stiff as a board. Even though you two were married to each other, he still felt that it was inappropriate for him to touch you in such a manner.
The thought didnāt last long, however, as you pulled away and gave him a smile that made his heart skip a beat.
Your smile was radiant. Your eyes were twinkling, and your face was glowing. For the first time in a long time, you were truly happy. And Nick didn't think that he'd ever seen anything more beautiful.
"I'm proud of you."
Your words were soft, and as you placed your hand on his chest, you could feel his heartbeat quicken beneath your palm.
His eyes were locked on yours, and he could see the emotions swirling around in your eyes.
Relief. Excitement. Happiness. Admiration.
The list could go on, but in the end, all that mattered was that he could see the love that you held for him.
And thatā¦ that look was all it took for his hands to gently grasp your shoulders and guide you backward as you told him another set of words about how he was a hero and that he was amazing.
You didnāt even realize what he was doing until your back felt the concrete wall. Once you realized you werenāt moving anymore, you paused and looked at him, and the moment you did, your breath got caught in your throat.
Nick was looking at you with an intensity that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand. His hands had moved from your shoulders to the nape of your neck, and the warmth of his skin sent a shiver down your spine.
"Nick." You whispered, watching as his thumb grazed the outline of your bottom lip. It was a simple, tender gesture, but it was enough to send butterflies fluttering in your stomach.
You couldnāt get a response out, not even a single word, as you watched his eyes glance down at your lips, his own tongue darting out to lick his.
Then, his head was moving forward, and his lips were brushing against yours. It was a ghost of a kiss, barely touching your lips, but the electricity was there. It was a spark that made your entire body tingle and your heart race.
When Nick pulled away, he was met with your intense gaze. You were almost upset at the weak display. Even though you understood his hesitation, a part of you was hoping he would be braver.
"That's it?" You murmured, a hint of teasing in your voice.
And the moment those words left your mouth, he was smirking. He was actually smirking, and his fingers were running through your hair.
"Are you asking me for more?" He asked, his voice low and deep, sending another shiver down your spine.
"Iām not asking," You breathed out, leaning in close and pressing your forehead against his. The moment you did, his grip tightened around your waist, and his free hand slid down to your hip, squeezing it slightly. "You were brave enough to get those letters out. Be brave enough to kiss me like you mean it."
Those were the magic words.
He didn't say anything in response.
He didn't need to.
Instead, his hands went back to the nape of your neck, and his lips were once again on yours. Only this time, it was not a ghostly touch. It was real, and the moment his lips were on yours, all your senses were flooded with him.
You could feel his warm, plush lips molding against yours and the gentle way his fingers were running through your hair.
But what made you absolutely weak was the taste of him. Your legs were almost wobbling the moment his tongue slipped into your mouth. It was like a dance, his tongue brushing against yours as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
And as the two of you kissed, all the tension and the desire that had been building up in the past months slowly dissipated.
Your heart was racing, and your mind was in a daze. The only thing you were thinking about was Nick and his lips. And as his fingers gripped onto the strands of your hair and the way his hips began to press against yours, all you could think about was getting him closer.
So, your hands traveled down from his chest and to his back, gripping the material of his jacket as you pulled him towards you.
The action elicited a groan from the back of his throat, and his hips began to press firmly against yours. You could feel the way his hips were subtly grinding against yours, and as his hardness began to rub against the thin material of your dress, the moan that escaped your lips was swallowed by his mouth.
The kiss was turning heated and passionate, and your lips were swollen and bruised. Your fingers were tugging on his hair, and his were clutching at the strands of your own.
His teeth gently bit down on your bottom lip, and a moan escaped your lips; the sound was swallowed by his mouth, and you could feel him smiling.
You and Nick were so lost in each other that night, so focused on the taste of one another and the way his body was pressed against yours; it created a bubble where you both were safe, warm, and blissful.
It was the first time in a long time either of you had felt that way, and that feeling continued to grow, and eventually, it blossomed into a love that was deeper than the ocean and brighter than the sun.
And that was when you realized that no matter what happened, the two of you would always have each other, and no matter how cruel the world was, the two of you would always find a way to stay true to yourselves.

Thinking again about how in the Handmaid's Tale, the main character's husband tells her to not worry about the government taking away her rights. He's certain that he'll be able to protect her, leaving her with no choice but to trust him, and then he doesn't.

Nick & June's Mix tape Vol. 3
With volume 3 comes the battle for Holly, separation and the unveiling of painful secrets. Season 3 was notoriously poor to our 2 lovers with June becoming seriously twitchy without Nick, Hannah or Holly. Gilead is Hell.
What Are You Good For?
Love in Gilead is less than ideal. One day youāre dreaming about a beautiful beach with your beloved and the next heās been promoted to Top Boy at the local horror show. Granted he looks great in the suit but Nick doesnāt seem to like the new tie, grabbing at it like the tightening noose that it actually is. Fred was obviously pissed about the baby snatching and his ārewardā for Nick was to arrange a promotion complete with a quick trip to the front, undoubtedly to die.
Iāve often said that Nick sometimes DOES listen to his better angels and sometimes he takes the easy way out. Granted itās difficult heās stuck between a rock and a hard place, but when June asks him to take the high road, hightailing it with her and Hannah for the border, and he doesnāt, it earns him a brutal verbal slap.
ļæ½ļæ½What are you good for?ā she demands and I was instantly reminded of S1 when June confronted him with his lowly aspirations: āIs this it? Youāre just gonna polish his car and once in a while get a Handmaid pregnant?ā In both of these moments Blaine looks deeply shamed, June has shown him that while she loves him sheās also acutely aware of his shortcomings.
Itās a justified blow to his ego, particularly given his newly acquired power and his reluctance to use it for good. As she demonstrates her willingness to risk so much more for freedom, heās left feeling like a small and suitably chided man, instead of the patriarchal Gileadās new Big Commander. āYouāll get killedā June says with a cold finality as he tells her that heās been sent to the front, confronting him with the reality that his unquestioning loyalty to Gilead will now surely cost him his life. Itās madness.
This is one of the only scenes where Nick and June are not depicted in a glowing light, itās difficult to ignore that Nick is now almost swallowed by the shadows. Over the last 2 seasons, theyāve become one anotherās beacon of joy and hope and thereās a palpable air of desolation and sorrow here, as these two bid each other goodbye, possibly forever. The camera reveals Nick and June divided by a wall, Nick unwilling to leave her, his back literally pinned to the wall by the heavy weight of Gilead.
June opens the door, gently reaches around, sensing him waiting, somehow their hands finding one another and she leads him out of the dark hallway and back into her room. Doors often represent entrances to other worlds and here we see June reach across the divide to return him to her side, once again. The lock snaps shut signalling an almost unheard of privacy. Thereās a sense of finality in it too, as though it may be the last time these two see sanctuary for a long time, if ever again. Itās no more than 10 seconds of screen time and yet it encapsulates their relationship so perfectly. Nick constantly waiting in the shadows, bound by duty, and June always reaching across the divide to bring him in from the cold.
Nice Girl Like You in A Place Like This
The DC episode ranks right up there with the Boston Globe episode as one of the most important and insightful for this entire series. In Ep 6 June witnesses for the first time the absolute devastation this dictatorship has unleashed on her countries seat of power. Fittingly Fred has selected new wave DC as the location to construct his own personal piece of propaganda in an attempt to force the Canadians to hand Nicole back. Juneās depicted glowering with vast angel wings, a monolith of power and holy vengeance. In the middle of Fredās little directorial debut, Nick strolls in and June does the trademark jaw drop. Fred wants to know what heās doing there, after all he had arranged for him to be shipped off to the front after the whole holding him at gun point / baby napping thing. Despite Fredās best efforts though, it seems that not only does Blaine continue to breath, but heās also shown up to visit his girlfriend.
Now if you thought Blaine looked good in a suit, wait till you see him draped in long, dark, tailor made, hotness. Itās obvious thereās a new kind of swagger to him and as he steps up next to June he brushes her hand and drops the line āNice girl like you doing in a place like this?ā Itās a line lifted from a Scorsese film of the same name and Blaineās used it to flirtatiously lighten the intensely grim mood. He knows DC is Hell but he also knows June is anything but a āNice Girlā, she blushes barely containing a smile and he smirks.
Fred and Serena canāt help but notice it and Fredās seething with jealousy. Thereās a close shot of Serenaās false finger clenching, a sign of the love lost between her and Fred, that contrasts directly against Nick and Juneās hand brushing. Exchanges between Fred and Nick reek of power and control. Fred directs Nick to do his bidding, maneuvering him across the stage and verbally leashing him by calling him son, once again reducing him to a subordinate. Fred makes June kneel down for the camera, and Blaine looks away unable to watch. Unbeknownst to Fred, this will be the last time he ever exercises this type of control over Blaine.
This is Your One Chance
Here we got our epic movie moment for the series, It was like Gone with the Wind and Dr Zhivago all rolled up into one big romantic snow globe. June runs out to meet Nick her hair and cape fluttering behind her freely, a stark contrast to the DC handmaids brutally silenced. It demonstrates the freedom she feels he brings her. Nick, however seems to want nothing to do with Juneās gamble on the Swiss that involves him laying his neck on the line and entwining himself in yet another Governments manoeuvrings for power. I, for one could hardly blame him; the last time he got involved with politics he ended up in the bottomless pit that is Gilead and heās been unsuccessfully digging his way out ever since.
Add to this the fact that the last time he tried to help June, a multitude of people risked their lives and most certainly died, and you have one understandably reluctant Commander. But heās helpless, she forces him to look in her eyes, tears streaming down her face and tells him that itāll be his one opportunity to truly show his love and fealty for his daughter.
Now while some may doubt that Blaine ever showed up to speak with the Swiss, I can guarantee that this little exchange ensured that he did. The fact is, Blaine is a sucker for the loyalty card and once June played it, it was a done deal. Scenes are cut and included for a reason and as we know, in The Handmaidās Tale, even the smallest scene is there for a reason. Show runners went to the effort of showing Blaine at the embassy being called to give information; he showed up, albeit reluctantly, and despite the fact that it all went sideways, writers still wanted you to know that. Unfortunately the reality is, he just couldnāt face her after it did all go to shit, and as a result he beat a hasty and somewhat cowardly exit to the front.
He knew the Swiss would soon tell her heād been part of the Sons of Jacob whoād been integral to the inception of Gilead, something heād kept hidden from her for some time now, and sheād be suitably mortified. June IS devastated, she looks out on the glowing playroom once filled with happy children that lies noticeably empty and silent. It reflects her isolation and sense of abandonment; perhaps the family she envisioned with Blaine was just a fantasy.
DC was an episode designed to illustrate the total destruction of all of our personal and societal freedoms under Gilead. To properly demonstrate this writers pulled the rip cord on any emotional support June may have previously had, this included breaking her and Serena up and having Nick leave her somewhat high and dry. It was essential to illustrate Nick was manipulated and part of the Gilead machine from the beginning. It was difficult to watch, given his devotion, but from the moment I saw him cloaked from head to foot in black, practically swallowed by his uniform, I knew it was inevitable that at least for now, Gilead pulled the strings.
In our next 2 Nick and June Mix tapes Iāll be covering Season 4, which was somewhat kinder to the Osblaine fans. Back soon.

language is the most liberating thing we can use. it is inherently freeing; think of 1984 by Orwell and how Newspeak pushes language to its barest forms so people do not have a word for rebellion, much less understand what it can be. We express opinions, and we go against cruelty through our words. It is the most important and overlooked tool we possess.Ā
if i am going to be transparent, the sexuality of language is liberating; we converse, and we can dig into the depths of each other through our words and our agreed-upon understanding.Ā
language is the most interesting concepts because it is ever-changing. We've lost cultures not only through the temporal loss of language but also through oppressive loss. we are losing languages today! Irish and Welsh are being lost, and these aren't even their true names, they are the anglicised versions, which come from centuries of oppression, war, and violence.Ā if you have cried at a book, smiled reading an article or laughed at a friends joke you have felt the power of language!
so please read, write, and speak. utilize the freedom we have from the words we know.

Nick & June's Mixtape Vol. 4
All hail Noirvember. Of course itās only right that we celebrate itās passing for the year, with a Mixtape from the first half of Season 4. It brought us a classic noir style entrance, a fight for survival and an unforgettable farewell.
I'm Trying to Keep You Alive
This is easily one of my aesthetically favourite scenes from the Handmaidās Tale. Itās dripping with classic noir shots and character poses, and features the sniper circle that comes full circle at the end of season 4, with the handmaidās torch beams as they enthusiastically slaughter Fred. Itās easy to forget that this is the first time Juneās seen Nick in almost a year, and that the last time she saw him was when she first learnt about his role in the Sons of Jacob. The guardās death is a clear statement; Nick is no longer the cocky boyish driver she once knew, he is now dangerous and powerful, commanding a team of snipers with a mere swipe of his fingers. āIām not leaving youā the guard says immediately before he is cut down by a bullet, a premonition of Nick and Juneās separation throughout seasons 4 and 5 as he tried to āmove onā.
June lies on the ground, covered in blood, eyes darting around into the pitch dark. Nick appears, a faceless figure accompanied by a death squad, demanding the location of the Handmaids. Thereās an aura of dread, and then suddenly Blaine steps into the light, kneels down and briefly brushes her shoulder with his fist. āIām trying to keep you aliveā he whispers, itās a warning and also a secret reassurance that, as always, heās there to hold the Gilead wolves at bay.
A tear rolls down her face, heād lied to her or at least not told her the truth about the Sons of Jacob, can she trust him? Then as he whispers to her and their eyes meet, she understands why HE of all people is there. Here in the darkness their secret bond still exists, she slides her hand away from the gun.
As she rises to her feet and looks in his eyes, a blinding light floods them both as snipers swarm. Theyāre surrounded, and yet to one another they are the only two people that exist in that moment. Itās been an eternity but the man she loves is there, changed but always there.
The dark aura suggests he could have become just another part of Gileadās killing machine, but as this confirmation of secret devotion and trademark illumination in one anotherās presence tells us, his loyalties remain squarely with Osborn.
The Strength of His Might
The looming brutalist grey building Osborn is carted into here, in the back of the van tells us in no uncertain terms that yes folks, itās torture time. The doors open, itās a barren concrete hallway and thereās no escape. But there IS Nick, and as he steps up he tenderly removes the restraint from around her neck, caressing it, a sign that he will save her neck from the figurative noose.
He fucked up, he can tell she knows who is now, what heās done and heās going to have to promise, to SWEAR heās on her side. He kneels down as a pledge of his fealty to her that mirrors the moment at the end of season 1 when she revealed her pregnancy. She remains gagged, itās a sign that sheās resolved to keep her mouth shut and without his help, she WILL die. While Nick has paid her the courtesy here of asking her to āPlease let me help youā, the reality is heās not going to give her the choice. Heāll help her whether she likes it or not. Nick knows that while he may have a bit of pull, he only gets one vote on a board of many Commanders, and they WILL kill her if she does not give up the goods; regardless of the fact that scarcity has suddenly increased her value as a handmaid.
As Aunt Lydia appears in the background proclaiming to be Osbornās āGuardian Angelā, Blaine unleashes one of his trademark bible quotes from the passage The Armor of God. As usual Blaineās giving us double the value at half the price here, with a veiled message for Osborn about personal strength and faith as protection against evil forces, all the while appearing to pledge allegiance to Gilead. No sooner had he turfed June from the van into Aunt Lydiaās clutches, than he was busy twisting Lawrenceās arm to get her out of them.
Heās not to be denied either, Lawrence owes him a favor and itās time to cough up. Thereās some subtle back and forth over firelight and whiskey here but the long and short of it is that Lawrenceās position is still precarious and Blaine wonāt hesitate to rip out the rug if he doesnāt comply. Lawrence recognizes this desperate longing in the young commander, he loved and lost Eleanor, and heās acutely aware of just how bad June can be for the health of the men in her life. But as we all know, Nick doesnāt give a fuck about his own neck and sure enough Lawrence does as heās bid.
While Nick may have gotten what he wanted, heās also revealed to Lawrence that Osborn is his ultimate Achilles Heel. There is nothing he wonāt do, no arm he wonāt twist and as we later learn, no commander he wonāt kill for her. Lawrence is constantly making mental notes for his future 3D chess games and while Nick may have won the day, he definitely lost the war. Lawrence proceeds to spend the next 2 seasons using Nick to his advantage with Osborn as his lure.
She Loves You. I Love You.
At the end of Episode 3 June is transported from the brutalist realm of Gilead torture central to a picturesque pastoral setting. Sure, sheās unceremoniously shoved from the van by The Eyes but never mind, because guess whoās stopped by? Nick is waiting in the middle of a large ageing wooden bridge, its arched beams are reminiscent of the interior of an ancient church. June walks in slow steps like a bride down an aisle as Nick stands like a groom waiting for her.
Notably in this scene Nick is standing almost to the other side of the bridge, metaphorically he still hasnāt quite switched sides yet but heās well on his way. For a moment the darkness of Gilead is gone, the menacing sound of barking dogs has been replaced with the sound of birds and a gentle stream, an aura of eternal romanticism permeating the air. Itās a gorgeous illustration of the escapism and solace these two find in one another.
Ah if only life for Nick and June were that simple, unfortunately the reality is that Juneās hands are still bound, her āwedding dressā is a Handmaids uniform and Nick is still dressed in his dapper commander garbā¦..these two arenāt getting married, once again theyāre saying goodbye. As Nick assures her that both himself and her daughter, love her, she spies the red handmaid van inching stealthily down the drive behind his back. Itās a reminder that every moment of comfort these two have ever known, has been invaded by the spectre of Gilead.
Thereās a sense of true desperation in the way they touch foreheads here, their minds clinging to one another, perhaps for the last time. As she rips herself away, June suddenly has her āfuck itā moment. If this is the last time they see one another, and it well might be, sheāll let him go on her own terms. Aunt Lydia can wait in the van and cattle prod be damned.
As the music swells and the camera spins we get a glimpse into the dizzying heights of their romance. Itās intentionally intoxicating and indulgent and true to nature, heartbreakingly fleeting.
Iāll be back with more Hitlists, Playlists and Mixtapes soon. Until then you can find the others on my page.

the closest thing serena has to a redeeming quality is that she seems to genuinely care about children/āherā child (the daughter june had āfor herā) and the show has recently been forcing serena to confront/be aware of how dangerous it is to be a girl in gilead, even though she keeps trying to bury her head in the sand
anyways this is all to say that i hope this buildup is for something, i really hope that serena will finally experience the modicum of awareness she needs to realize that the best thing for that baby would be to get her out of gilead (with june ideally)
do i think this is realistic? no, but i really hope edenās death and the fact that serena asked her friend if she ever worries about her daughterās future means something, i really hope something clicks for her even if itās only for a second or only in relation to nichole
#season 2 episode 13 is one of the best episodes of tv iāve seen in AWHIKE#handmaids tale#the handmaid's tale#elle yaps š©·#tv talks
