To this day, one of the most tone-setting events for me is Hoh’s death. And even more tone-setting than Hoh’s death is Serena Rinnen’s conversation with Hoh before she closes his eyes, and the fact that she’s one of the first people (if not THE first person) we see get not what she wants, but what she needs from the tower.

And every time I reread, Hoh and Rinnen are the point in the story that reimmerses me in the tragedy of it all.

Laure: Zzz.

Hatz: No. I don't think so.

Khun: I doubt that he will answer anything even if he's awake…Unless you confiscate his pillow.

Shibisu: Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen him awake again after the crown game.

Serena: We just kinda drag him around, huh. That's kinda funny actually. Why do we do that?

Bam: Maybe you just don't want to leave him out?

Serena: Or maybe because it's fun to bother him.
