🩸 — thicker than water? for a headcanon about my muse and their family; whether biological or a found family, and how they feel about family ties.

Family is a weird topic to broach. To say Nikki's is a complicated one would be an understatement. They were always a bit of a nasty show, a drama, when they all got together but...

She remembers it was Thanksgiving, 2018. Her mother had decided on a huge gathering; all the Keaton girls had been practically hunted down and brought back almost screaming and kicking..and then there was the cousins. The O' Connells did not seem much happier to be summoned by Linda-freaking-Keaton than Erica or Serena looked. This was going destined to be such a fun evening. No. Never.

It started out well, pleasantly even. None of the kids could believe it but the mood had shifted by the time the turkey was on the table. Linda had managed to run her mouth about uncle Keith —rest his soul— and aunt Janey had somehow insulted her mom's prized cherry pie. Not fair things to compare really but who was Nikki to get in the middle of the sisters' arguing!? Richard Keaton, the no-nonsense man that he is, made sure to cut the damn bird and serve before the kids ate their mothers' hairsprayed hair. The mood had gone south really fast.

Arkin looked ready to drop multiple F—bombs, Addison looked panicked trying to sooth everyone, Eden was on the verge of tears because of the comments about her dad, Erica was gradually getting angrier about a comment made regarding her second marriage and for some reason Nikki could not pinpoint, Serena was breathing fire from her nose whenever their parents mentioned relationships. Nikki herself had managed to escape fire till aunt Jayne made a comment about everyone in their family crashing and burning..her mother had taken that as a jab.

They had not managed to finish dinner that night. Instead, midnight found the six —debatable but still— sane offsprings of the two madwomen still yelling at each other inside the house, sitting by the pool. Addison whispering comforting words to Erica, Serena sharing Arkin's cigarette without words exchanged between then and Nikki stroking Eden's hair as the girl rested her head on her shoulder.

What a family...

Luckily for him, it seemed to be on the up with the kindness of a stranger -- even if it's one he had to seek out. He stands beside her at the register once he had given the record that would soon be his to her to buy it, nodding his head like a promise.

The how he had come by purchasing felt like it would be a fun anecdote to share too in between song spins.

Serena turned her head, quickly looking down to the contents of his hand before meeting his eyes. She was never someone who could turn down a piece of media, especially when there was music involved and she couldn’t in good spirits allow the stranger to miss the amazing deal written among the signs.

“I get it, sounds like you’ve been some shitty luck.” She responded with a nod of her head. “I’d be happy to help, just let me know how it is after you’ve finished the first play through.” She took the item from his hand, passing it over to the cashier with the record she’d been planning to purchase regardless. Her mother would have hated her good deed, seeing almost everyone as beneath her, but Serena could never get herself to be like that.

biography:

Addison O’Connell didn’t think she’d live past the age of eighteen. She didn’t know what would suffocate her first - the never-ending grief of a life she’d never get, or the hole left in her heart from when her father left. It does sound quite selfish if you didn’t know the whole story, and you didn’t understand that at one point for a brief second, she did have a piece of happiness before it was ripped away. 

Addison was born three minutes after Arkin. Mostly a surprise for the O’Connell family, as they were certain a baby would fix all of their problems (but not two babies). She grew up as being always waited on second to her brother. He seemed to be the loudest of the two, so he got anything and everything first. Not completely understanding it until grade school, she tried to follow in his footsteps and be loud and demanding as well. This resulted in a spanking and to be quiet. In all of her life, she never tried it again after that. A lesson was learned very quickly and probably wasn’t the best one for her young mind. Things weren’t going to be fair for her. She tried to be jealous of her brother. She tried to want more for herself, but it turned into wanting more attention than anything else. 

Addison did everything she could to make her parents want to love her. She tried cleaning the house after school, doing all of her homework, and even figuring out how to make breakfast one morning (it was burnt toast). It never seemed to work. She was never met with a loving hug or any word of praise. It didn’t matter what she would do because her parents simply didn’t care. A fact that no one else in the world seemed was out of the ordinary. As if everyone avoided their children, when she knew her friends’ parents were completely different. 

It wasn’t until their third child, their third attempt at fixing a horrible marriage, that their father had left. Addison never knew if it was from getting cold feet at having another mouth to feed or another soul to crush. A harsh statement, but as she didn’t feel anything but disgust for the man. It wouldn’t have been right to try to convince herself it was anything more honorable. A father he claimed to be, she didn’t see any resemblance of the fathers of her friends. There could have been a small light of hope that if part of the problem was gone, things could’ve been better for the O’Connell family. It eventually died out, with their mom having two jobs just to stay afloat in the two-bedroom apartment. The added stress meant more nights they’d find their mom passed out, either in the bathroom or sometimes in her bed. It left Addison and Arkin to raise a baby mostly on their own. 

This had more of an effect on Addison as she continued to grow in the same environment that didn’t change if she was there or not. Besides keeping Eden alive and out of harms way, there wasn’t anything else needed from her. Arkin had his own life going on, and he didn’t necessarily need her as much as she needed him. She grew relaxed in her studies, the former high scores were slowly turning into more and more red marks and concerns from teachers. She started to sneak out at night after everyone had gone to bed. She tried to fill the hole her father left with anyone she could convince of being with her. The rumors going around certainly had its own troubling affect on her, but it only served as more fuel to stop trying. 

Surprisingly, she continued her life at Ocean Crest before her brother was able to help turn everyone’s life around. No, she didn’t do any better in school and would be an awful student if college was ever in the future. But, Addison figured out, finally, that things had an effect on Eden and that maybe she might need to set a better example to follow. She could say it was the spite of proving her parents wrong. To show her mother how to actually be one when she wasn’t consumed in her own grief and despair. But two very important people would say otherwise. Her brother and sister wouldn’t have let her leave without them, and she didn’t want to leave them alone in the world. Not after everything they had been through together, it was just about a tradition at this point to stick together. 

The idea of college never really appealed to her, but it was a way out. It was something new and different, and maybe she’d find a better version of herself out there. Which she did eventually find. It took some time and a few new habits gained instead of continuing on bad ones, but Addison O’Connell was able to turn her life around. She decided to become a therapist with the idea of helping people who really wanted a way to be better and not knowing where to start. She doesn’t know how much Aurora Bay might need her, but she wanted to be there for someone else like her. Addison wanted to be that person she never had as a child.

"One milkshake coming up," the blonde hops down off the stool that she'd dragged over to perch on. Technically, sitting behind the counter wasn't allowed but her feet ached too badly to be standing around waiting for something to do. The diner was a ghost town anyway.

Ripping off the order from her pad, she stuck it up and went back to sitting. Her book was splayed open on the counter so she didn't lose her place. "Depends what you're into," she says, knowing that taste on books was subjective. "This one is a horror book. Some people don't like that kind of thing."

Serena had been craving a milkshake from the diner since she woke up the morning. Now that the day had finally come to an end — meaning she no longer had to balance herself on the tips of pointe shoes, she was free to do whatever she wanted. She smiled at the sound of the bell as she walked up to the counter, “Hey, can I have a large vanilla shake?” She asked before spotting the book in the other girl’s hand. “Reading anything good?”

Born in Aurora Bay, Serena was the middle child of the Keaton Three and from there she was destined to prove herself.

She was constantly met with a set of standards growing up which left little room for error, though she had an older sibling to watch when she needed it. Serena loves her sisters more than anything, though they’ve had their fair shares of disagreements — she’d do anything to protect them.

Serena was thrown into ballet classes at an early age, 2 years old. What started as a hobby that would eventually look good as an extracurricular— her mother said she’d look disciplined, turned into her life once talent was spotted at age 9. She couldn’t be anything other than perfect according to her parents, they had standards to uphold.

Once she reached high school she started to be more rebellious, starting in small increments and never within the view of her parents. Her training schedule left her little time for much else, but she still balanced a pretty prominent social life — after all appearances were important so she couldn’t dare miss her prom and the opportunity to be crowned in front of everyone.

Serena was thankful for all her opportunities but it was easy to feel like you couldn’t breathe amidst the constant pressure. She started to fake Friday night practices, allowing herself to sneak out and take on the nightlife with her friends.

During college she met a man at a club who only knew her for name rather than her accomplishments and she fell hard. She felt like she could really be herself around him and he was the person that was always there when she needed to get out of the spotlight.

A few years ago she was there on center stage, playing “Juliet” in a small performance theater and her ankle went to give out on her. As she began to execute each movement, she rolled her ankle completely out of place. Her pride wouldn’t let her fall, finishing out the performance on an injury she wouldn’t be allowed to bring to light. Her image was on the line and she couldn’t look weak. He watched everything from the front row, her family didn’t catch it, but their eyes met as she refused to let her body fall to the ground in front of a crowd. Once she got off the stage she could barely put pressure on her left ankle, still she didn’t let herself fall until she was alone with him in her dressing room.

There was more than meets the eye to her boyfriend, he had a connection to someone who would allow her to keep her injury in the shadows. Sure under the table pain medicine wasn’t the most trustworthy thing, but it kept the public from seeing she had a weakness to prey on.

Soon she didn’t need the pills at all, the injury healed, but that wasn’t enough for her to stop taking them.

They were caught together when her mom was supposed to be at work, appalled the woman threw him out and Serena was forbidden from seeing him again under their roof. They even threw in a check to ensure he’d stay away —he took off from Aurora Bay and they haven’t seen each other since. A four year relationship was thrown down the drain because he wasn’t someone “respectable”.

Now she’s been able to spread her wings, taking some months to travel and perform and get her own place in Seabrook Quarter she’s been able to feel a sense of freedom. Though her parent’s, mostly her mother’s voice still nags perfection in the back of her mind. She’s trying her best to live her life the way she wants to, though still keeping parts of her life a secret.

Erica wasn't exactly a chatty person, but talking about leaving town or encouraging others to do the same seemed to just happen without much encouragement. "There's a whole wide world out there." Erica assured him when the other said he wasn't sure if he even could leave. The blonde had never had that problem. She'd left all too easily, and that was part of the rift between her and her family. But she couldn't stay in Aurora Bay, not with the pressures her parents had put on her. She'd had to leave, to start over somewhere new where she could be whoever she wanted, to be able to explore who she was without parental interference.

And with the realization that he was being so honest with her, he decided to completely change the subject.

Coco Gauff Wins The US Open

Coco Gauff won her first major title on Saturday at the US Open with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Aryna Sabalenka in front of an adoring crowd under the roof on a stormy day at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After the match, the 19-year-old American fell to the ground and lay on her back on the court before sobbing in celebration. After hugging Sabalenka, Gauff ran up the stairs to tearfully hug her parents and then the rest of her team.

Moments later, Gauff told the star-studded crowd, which included Kevin Durant, Diane Keaton, Nicole Kidman, Spike Lee, Mindy Kaling and 2006 champion Maria Sharapova, that she still hadn't fully processed the victory.
