A Fusion of Traditions: Sequoyah Aono’s Marble Self-Portrait・「青野セクウォイアの自己肖像彫刻『デクスターヘッド』:ミケランジェロに触発された美」
Sequoyah Aono, a New York-based sculptor, has a unique multicultural background that deeply influences his work. Born in Naples, Italy, to an American father and Japanese mother, Aono was raised in Japan, where he cultivated an appreciation for both Western and Eastern artistic traditions.
The marble sculpture, Dexter Head, featured here is a striking self-portrait of Aono, inspired by Michelangelo’s David. Carved from white marble, the sculpture is a harmonious blend of clean, minimalist geometry and the graceful, flowing lines of traditional techniques.

looking for asks? who are your top 5 and why!
Hey Jelly! I pondered my orb and it told me that you were asking for my top 5 singers, so here goes:
Tori Amos. She and her music were so important to me in my twenties and early thirties. Essential, really. I literally wouldn't be the same person without her lyrics. It's like her music was made for me. I'm not listening to her as much anymore, but she's still my number one, definitely the best American pop musician and lyricist of her generation (or the 20th century tbh.)
Regina Spektor. (Yes problematic, I know.) I can't cancel her completely. Yet. Because her music was my anchor in my twenties. The way she writes about love ... yeah, she gets me. I get her.
Vanessa Carlton. Yes, you can laugh. She's underrated, though. I bought her debut at a library sale ~ 15 years ago and realized that she's so much more than You Know What. I really relate to her albums, it feels like we went through similar things at the same time. I listen to her a lot.
Joanna Newsom. My princess, my baby girl, I don't understand you but I love you. Colleen is my favorite song of all time, probably.
There's a tie for number 5 because there are so many (Kate Nash, PJ Harvey, India.Arie, Juana Molina, Solange, ......) so I'm gonna go with Sequoyah Murray because his voice is everything and he's criminally underrated. More people need to listen to him, his music is magic.
Thanks for the ask!!!

🌵3 Saguaro Street: Rebuilt
I kind of hated the Sequoyah's lot. There were a lot of issues with how it functioned (sims wouldn't age?) and some other general borkedness. Plus, I wanted to alter the look a teensy bit. So, here's the kinda different kinda not rebuild of their lot.
Have a speedbuild, while we're at it.

There are many forms of white supremacist violence
Tumblr media
“Pizza, guns, drums, music, family, and God. This pretty much sums up my life. It’s a pretty good life,” read the tagline on an Instagram account that appeared to belong to Long.
A student who graduated from Sequoyah High with Long in 2017 who spoke on the condition of anonymity told The Daily Beast, “He was very innocent seeming and wouldn’t even cuss. He was sorta nerdy and didn’t seem violent from what I remember. He was a hunter and his father was a youth minister or pastor. He was big into religion.”
Robert Aaron Long, the suspect in the killing of eight people at three massage parlors in the Atlanta area, acted alone and took responsibility for the killings, law-enforcement officials said.
Six of the victims were women of Asian descent, officials said.
Mr. Long, who is in custody, told authorities the shootings were related to a sexual addiction and that he had visited the massage parlors in the past, Capt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said. Mr. Long told investigators that he blamed the establishments for providing an outlet for his addiction to sex, according to the sheriff’s office.
“It’s a temptation for him that he wanted to eliminate,” Capt. Baker said. “He said it was not racially motivated.”
White mass shooters, particularly when Christian, always get tremendously more energy expended in understanding and empathizing with their psychology than anyone else.
And mainstream news will never draw the direct connection to misogynistic, xenophobic, and victim-blaming inherent to white evangelical ideology that it does to someone who is, for example, a Satanist. All Muslims have had to answer for and separate from the actions of a particular Muslim much more than conservatives and even "patriotic" Democrats will ever have to answer for years of ratcheting up fear and hated toward China and by extension all Chinese people.
But even if a person were to take him at the man arrested in this shooting at word—which no one should —that the killings were not explicitly white supremacist, just puritanical, U.S. society is structured to marginalize & fetishize East and Southeast Asian immigrant women into sex work while at the same time, immigration law, "sex trafficking" laws, and local ordinances intersect to rob them of legitimate access to power and self-defense, typically in the name of their own protection.
The murderous actions of this individual is an extension of the legal system itself that protects a billionaire like Robert Kraft from all harm when he is caught on videotape paying someone for sex but threatens the sex worker with deportation or jails her for doing the work.
Because the law exists to better help the powerful abuse the powerless, not protect them.

Flag of the State of Sequoyah based on the proposed state seal from 1905
from /r/vexillology Top comment: The Supreme Court ruled in McGirt v. Oklahoma on July 9th, 2020 that the 5 Tribes (who's land previously comprised the "Indian Territory" prior to all five treaties with the US being violated by the US Government to create the Oklahoma territory), are in fact still the rightful governing bodies over Eastern Oklahoma. Presumably this means the Indian Territory still exists (in legal theory), which means we have another potenial state to add to the Union. This proposal for a State of Sequoyah originated at the turn of the 20th Century. So who knows! We may get a State of Sequoyah in the 21st Century. The seal is based on the [original one proposed more than a century ago.](https://www.cherokeephoenix.org/Images/Legacy/1011_ARTS01A_LG.jpg) The five rays of the star hold the seals of the "Five Civilized Tribes" – Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole, with Sequoyah (the man who created the writen Cherokee language) standing above the star. Around the large star are 52 smaller stars, representing the the current 50 states, plus DC and Puerto Rico who in this scenario have gained statehood.

top 5 languages you wish you knew
so like I’m exempting languages I have some knowledge of but like oh to be proficient at verbal communication like in general
anyway...
1. Farsi. my grandparents lived in Iran for a while, but my grandfather died before I was born, and my grandmother never managed to learn the language (probably due to unrecognized learning disability). I’m also really interested in Persian culture in general too.
2. Tsalagi (Cherokee language). my grandfather probably had Cherokee ancestry, but again... he died early, as did nearly all his relatives we know about, which isn’t many. we’re pretty sure that part of the family came from the area where the Qualla Boundary reservation is now (TN/NC border), though. in any case, Sequoyah’s syllabary is rad as hell.
3. Russian. this one has its roots in I Was A Middle School Communist, but I’m also generally interested in learning more about the culture and also I really wanna be able to read Cyrillic letters.
4. Vietnamese. tbh I’m not as emotionally invested in wanting to learn the language as just wanting to know how to pronounce the words, since I live in San Jose and it’s a huge part of the cultural landscape here
5. Te Reo Maori. no specific reason for this one, just Polynesian languages are cool, yo.

Favorite Songs of 2019 - 2/2
Listen on Youtube
As I said in my favorite albums list, this year had many, many albums that almost did the trick for me but just missed, so having this playlist is a nice way of giving these releases their deserved acknowledgement. This is VERY long so please skim and rule songs out to your liking. In order to keep it semi-reasonable, I’ve limited each artist to one song.
Like the previous 2019 playlist, I’ve ordered these songs to flow and blend in a way that makes sense (for example, I gather the slow and atmospheric songs away from the upbeat poppy stuff, and note that I begin with the most chaotic song by far so it won’t be too shocking later).
Track list
Blanck Mass - House Vs. House
Dorian Electra - Flamboyant
Sudan Archives - Confessions
Rapsody - Nina
Purple Pilgrims - Sensing Me
Sequoyah Murray - Penalties Of Love
