Kelly-Moore's success was more than a simple matter of fortuitous timing. In the first six months of existence, Kelly-Moore, instead of a $3,000 profit, made $30,000. What Moore and Kelly failed to anticipate was the pent-up demand for housing caused by the privations of war that resulted in a dramatic building boom. The plan was to mix paint in the mornings and Moore would make deliveries in the afternoons, with the hope that the start-up business would show a $500 profit each month.
#Kelly moore paint free
Kelly, a retired superintendent at Glidden who was tired of having free time and was now very much interested in starting a little factory. He found the ideal partner in the form of William H. All Moore needed now was someone experienced in mixing paint. Seed money to establish a single store and manufacturing facility came from the funds he had saved during his stint at Glidden, which during the war he had then wisely invested in Tulsa, Oklahoma, real estate. At the time, it was home to a large number of orchards, some of which were being converted to tract-home communities. He studied the southern California market and concluded that the ideal location for his enterprise was the city of San Carlos, located some 30 minutes north of San Jose, in the heart of what would one day become the Silicon Valley. In 1946, at the age of 29, in the same year that he married, Moore decided to strike out on his own in the paint business. Having lost several years of his life to the service, he felt that he had fallen behind schedule in his life, a condition that served to fuel his already ambitious nature. Like many in his generation, the war had a profound effect on Moore. Moore's business career was interrupted by a stint in the Navy during World War II when he served on a destroyer in the Pacific, but his time at Glidden convinced him that his future lay in the paint business and he devoted much of his spare time in the service studying two books on paint making. As a result, he reached his target goal of $1,000 per month within the first year, and ultimately he became Glidden's top West Coast producer. Rather than continue to spend the same amount of time on all of his customers, he decided to return his smaller accounts to the company in order to focus his efforts on the top 20 percent. After analyzing sales information he was able to determine that just 20 percent of his customers accounted for 80 percent of his sales. Starting with a $160 per month draw, Moore set a goal of earning $1,000 per month and launched a systematic approach to achieving that amount. Moore soon found work at Glidden Paint as a salesman and lab technician. When he graduated in 1938 with a dual degree in Industrial Management and Chemical Engineering, America was still very much in the grips of the Great Depression and Moore was happy to find any job, accepting a position as a salesman for National Theatre Supply at a salary of $110 per month, a considerable falloff considering he had been able to cobble together $150 per month from his part-time college jobs. In the process Moore became something of a local legend. Nevertheless, he needed living expenses and to support himself through his college years he held eight odd jobs simultaneously, yet still maintained high grades and achieved an impressive athletic record. When he began his studies at Georgia Tech in 1934 he was accomplished enough at the game to win a scholarship as a walk-on.

More important, he learned how to play tennis on a makeshift court in front of his home. Ambitious from an early age, according to a video tribute produced by his alma mater, Georgia Tech, he started shining shoes at nine in order to fund his college education. Moore, who was born in the small town of Hartford, Arkansas, the son of a barber. The driving force behind Kelly-Moore was the company's cofounder, William E. Retail sales account for less than 15 percent of the company's business.

As has been the case for more than 50 years, Kelly-Moore mostly caters to professional contractors and the do-it-yourself market, building a reputation for selling high-quality products while providing strong service. Four manufacturing facilities, capable of producing 20 million gallons of more than 100 types of paints and finishes each year, are strategically located in Seattle, Washington Hurst, Texas Tempe, Arizona and San Carlos, California. The company concentrates its efforts on western and southwestern states, operating more than 160 stores in 11 states and Guam. is an employee-owned regional paint manufacturer and retailer, with its headquarters located in San Carlos, California.

After the Civil War ended white racial violence against now freed Black people erupted in Memphis (1866), New Orleans (1866, 1874, 1895 and 1900), Tennessee again in 1868, Mississippi (1871), Louisiana (1873), Alabama (1874), South Carolina (1876 and 1898), and Atlanta, Georgia (1906). During the 1866 riots in Memphis and New Orleans as many as 100 Black men and women were murdered. In Colfax, Louisiana, a white militia murdered as many as 150 Black men in 1873. In 1898, a white mob in Wilmington, North Carolina overthrew an interracial elected government. Rioters destroyed Black-owned property and businesses and killed as many as 300 people.
As the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama documents, between the end of Reconstruction in 1877 and 1950, racial terrorism led by groups like the Ku Klux Klan, including former Confederate soldiers, swept through the South to enforce Jim Crow segregation, protect unfair labor relations, and deny African Americans the right to vote. There were over 4,000 lynchings in twelve Southern states. An estimated six million Black people eventually fled north and west to escape the South’s terrorist regime.
Again, racist violence was not confined to the South. In 1910, after Jack Johnson, the defending heavyweight champion and an African-American defeated James J. Jeffries, a white former champion, anti-Black riots broke out in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Chicago, Columbus, Houston, Lo Angeles, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, and St. Louis. During and after World War I, as African Americans moved north to escape racist violence in the South and to find newly opening factory jobs, they were attacked in Chester, Pennsylvania, East St. Louis, Illinois, Omaha, Nebraska, Wilmington, Delaware, New York, and Chicago. White mobs destroyed hundreds of black homes and businesses on Chicago’s South Side. Over 1,000 Black families were left homeless. The worst white mob violence was in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1921 where white rioters, many deputized by local police, attacked and destroyed homes and businesses in the Greenwood District, a prosperous Black community. The Tulsa massacre is considered the worst incident of racial violence in United States history.
White attacks on Black people erupted again during World War II as African Americans challenged segregation in jobs and housing. Whites rioted against Black workers and families in Beaumont, Texas, Mobile, Alabama, Detroit and Los Angeles. After the war there were a number of anti-Black, anti-integration riots in the Chicago metropolitan area. The Chicago Commission on Human Relations recorded over 350 serious attacks on Black families trying to move into what had been white Chicago neighborhoods between 1945 and 1950 alone, while Chicago Police Department reportedly did not intervene to stop the violence. In Cicero, a Chicago suburb, 4,000 whites attacked an apartment building where a Black family lived in 1951.
During the Civil Rights movement Black and white activists were repeatedly assaulted and a number were murdered, including Rev. George Lee and Lamar Smith in Mississippi in 1955, Herbert Lee in Mississippi in 1961, William Lewis Moore in Georgia in 1963, Medgar Evers in Mississippi in 1963. James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner in Neshoba County, Mississippi in June 1964, Jimmie Lee Jackson, Rev. James Reeb and Viola Gregg Liuzzo in Alabama in 1965, Samuel Ephesians Hammond Jr., Delano Herman Middleton and Henry Ezekial Smith in South Carolina in 1968, and the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. In the 1970s, efforts to racially integrate schools in Boston and Brooklyn led to attacks on school buses.
In December 1986, Michael Griffith was chased onto a highway by a white mob after his car broke down near their Howard Beach, Queens neighborhood in New York City. Griffith was struck and killed by a car. In August 1989, Yusef Hawkins was shot to death after being attacked by a white mob in Bensonhurst Brooklyn in New York City. Hawkins had gone to Bensonhurt to inquire about a used car that was for sale. In August 1997, Brooklyn police tortured Abner Louima in their precinct house.
The advent of the cellphone camera finally exposed the extent of police and vigilante violence to a broader (meaning white) public, and the Black Lives Matter movement demanded that we “Say Their Names”: Ahmaud Arbery (Georgia); Sandra Bland (Texas); Michael Brown (Missouri); Eleanor Bumpus (New York); Philando Castile (Minnesota); George Floyd (Minnesota); Eric Garner (New York); Freddie Gray (Baltimore); Trayvon Martin (Florida); David McAtee (Kentucky); Tony McDade (Florida); Laquan McDonald (Chicago); Tamir Rice (Cleveland); and Breonna Taylor (Kentucky).

Sell Your House Faster - Pay Attention to Your Garden
Asking yourself how do I sell my house fast at a higher price?
What's outside your home can be just as important was what's inside when you're looking to sell, especially when you're looking to sell fast for the best price. It's important to minimise anything that could be a quick turn off for prospective purchasers.
Tumblr media
The garden is often thought of as an extra outside room. To help sell your house faster at a higher price, it is one of the most important aspects to consider to maximize everything your home has to offer.
Potential buyers will want to see your garden as a place to entertain friends or just relax. Remember when you've looked at houses to buy, how much did a nice garden make a difference to your impressions of the house.
If you're wondering where to start and what to do to maximise value start by thinking back to when friends have invited you for a barbecue, what most impressed you about their gardens?
A patio or decking area will add value to your home and increase the chance of a quick sale. With careful forethought, these can be very impressive at the same time as being excellent value for money. Much of the work can be done cheaply by roping in friends to help and offering to repay them with a garden party when the work is finished.
Be sure to tidy the flower beds, trees and lawn. If the flowers are past their best, buy some bright bedding plants from the garden centre to cheer up the borders.
Of course, your house may be on the market at a time of year when the garden is not looking its best. But you can always use colourful pots on the patio or decking or placed around the gardens, and fill them with evergreens.
If you have a shed or outbuilding, make sure that it is free from clutter. Clear away children's bikes or toys and tidy the shed or workshop. Hanging tools, chairs, etc, from the walls will clear up the floor area and give an impression of more space.

These are America's 10 most expensive states to live in for 2021
Tumblr media

Prices are rising for a wide array of goods and services as the U.S. confronts a level of inflation not seen in decades. Labor shortages, supply chain disruptions, and exploding demand as the pandemic wanes are all adding to pricing pressures. The situation is making it even harder to get by in America’s most expensive states, causing worries for consumers and companies alike.
Companies like to do business in states with a low cost of living, which can be attractive to workers and customers. CNBC’s annual America’s Top States for Business study considers cost of living as a factor in competitiveness, scoring states based on an index of prices for basic items. It is among our ten categories of competitiveness.
We score all 50 states based on an index of items from groceries to housing. Some states keep costs low and are appealing in a new era of pandemic-triggered migration. But not all.
The following are the ten states that were the most expensive to live in last year. We look at where prices have been heading in the volatile first half of this year versus one year ago, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Also listed are average prices for selected items, based on the 2020 Average Cost of Living Index by the Council for Community and Economic Research, C2ER.
10. New Jersey

While prices in Northern New Jersey can seem like a bargain compared to those across the Hudson River in New York, they don’t look nearly as good when you compare them to the rest of the country. A four-bedroom house in Bergen County will cost more than three times what it would cost in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
2021 Cost of Living score: 15 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, New York-Newark-Jersey City): Up 4.1%
Average home price (Bergen County): $615,738
Half gallon of milk: $2.43
Monthly energy bill: $186.37
9. Rhode Island

America’s smallest state has some big costs, like energy. In Providence, expect to pay nearly three times what you would pay in New Orleans to heat and cool your home. And a yoga class in Rhode Island will set you back roughly twice what it would in Anniston, Alabama.
2021 Cost of Living score: 14 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, Northeast Region): Up 4.6%
Average home price (Providence): $430,197
Half gallon of milk: $2.52
Monthly energy bill: $240.57
8. Connecticut

The Nutmeg State has some of the highest prescription drug prices in the country. C2ER researchers found insulin costing roughly twice as much in Stamford, Connecticut as it does in parts of Tennessee. And a visit to the doctor costs nearly twice what it would in Tupelo, Mississippi.
2021 Cost of Living score: 12 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, Northeast Region): Up 4.6%
Average home price (Stamford): $615,372
Half gallon of milk: $2.65
Monthly energy bill: $261.22
7. Maryland

The Old Line State can’t seem to hold the line on prices. A new home in Bethesda, Maryland, will cost roughly three times what you would pay in Jefferson City, Missouri. And get ready for some sticker shock at the grocery store, where you will pay twice the price for a loaf of bread as you would in St. Paul, Minnesota.
2021 Cost of Living score: 11 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, Baltimore-Columbia-Towson): Up 4.5%
Average home price (Bethesda): $854,529
Half gallon of milk: $2.49
Monthly energy bill: $193.98
6. Alaska

Residents of the Last Frontier face unique challenges, confronted with extreme weather, long winter nights, and some truly astronomical Alaska living costs. In Fairbanks, expect to pay more than five times the energy bill you would pay in Oklahoma City. Even a can of tuna will cost you nearly twice what it would in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
2021 Cost of Living score: 9 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, Urban Alaska): Up 6.2%
Average home price (Juneau): $581,906
Half gallon of milk: $2.64
Monthly energy bill: $273.38
5. Massachusetts

Food prices in the Massachusetts are almost high enough to spark a revolution. A dozen eggs in Boston will cost twice as much as it would in Joplin, Missouri. You’ll pay around 25% more for a pizza than you would in Burlington, North Carolina. And your apartment rent will be about four times what it would be in Monroe, Louisiana.
2021 Cost of Living score: 8 out of 175 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, New England Region): Up 4%
Average home price (Boston): $744,522

Monthly energy bill: $233.86
4. Oregon

Oregonians love their coffee, and at these prices, they had better. It is more than 40% more expensive in Portland, Oregon, than it is in Portage, Michigan. Expect your monthly house payment to be about twice what it would be if you lived in Enid, Oklahoma.
2021 Cost of Living score: 6 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, West Region): Up 5.1%
Average home price (Portland): $623,494

Monthly energy bill: $143.85
3. California

Roughly 75% of the nation’s leafy green vegetables are grown in California, yet a head of lettuce costs about 30% more in San Francisco than it does in Fayetteville, Arkansas. California produces more milk than any other state, yet it costs nearly 50% more here than in Arizona. The Golden State lives up to its name when it comes to prices, including the highest gasoline taxes in the country, according to the American Petroleum Institute.
2021 Cost of Living score: 5 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim): Up 4%
Average home price (San Francisco): $1,362,163

Monthly energy bill: $267.84
2. New York

If you can make it here, you’ll make it anywhere, because almost every place else is cheaper to live than New York. The average home price in Manhattan — $2.2 million based on 2020 figures — is easily the nation’s highest, and more than ten times the price in Brownsville, Texas. Even upstate in Albany you’ll pay twice what you would pay in Brownsville. And it’s not just housing. A box of corn flakes will cost you twice what it would in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
2021 Cost of Living score: 3 out of 75 points (Top States Grade: F)
Consumer Price Index (June, New York-Newark-Jersey City): Up 4.1%
Average home price (Manhattan): $2,227,806
Half gallon of milk: $3.11
Monthly energy bill: $157.70
1. Hawaii
A trip to the supermarket in Honolulu is practically an exercise in high finance. Expect to pay more than $5 for a loaf of bread, or twice what it would cost in parts of Kansas. A five-pound sack of potatoes will cost you four times what it costs in Kokomo, Indiana. Home prices are through the roof, and so is basic maintenance, like getting your washing machine repaired. That will cost more than twice what it would in McAllen, Texas. There may be no more breathtaking a place than the Aloha State, but prices in Hawaii, America’s most expensive state, will take your breath away, too.
2021 Cost of Living score: 2 out of 75 points
Consumer Price Index (June, West Region): Up 5.1%
Average home price (Honolulu): $1,386,483

How Rotel Became an Essential Part of Any Queso
Tumblr media

How a canned blend of tomatoes, chiles, and spices became at million-dollar business
When Erin Smith, chef and owner of Houston’s Feges BBQ, makes queso, she does it the Texas way. She cuts a package of Velveeta cheese into half-inch cubes and adds them to a saucepan until — after the addition of peppers, spices, and tomatoes — the resulting mix is fully melted. By the time the queso is served alongside chips for dipping, it’s rich, yes, but also a bit spicy. Hints of chile pepper and tomatoes seep through the layers of cheese, thanks to a not-so-secret ingredient: a can of Rotel.
“I am a native Texan, and I lived in New York and San Francisco for a few years,” Smith says. “At the time, you couldn’t find Rotel in either of those cities. I would get care packages with shipments of Rotel because it was the only way to make a proper queso. I truly believe that you just can’t make a proper queso without Rotel.”
The original Rotel was and still is a simple mix of diced tomatoes and chopped fire-roasted green chile peppers, plus minimal amounts of cilantro, citric acid, salt, and the ever-ubiquitous “natural flavors.” The marriage of chiles and peppers is stirred at the canning site into tomatoes simmering in a bit of water, and it packs heat — the branding is quick to label the taste “zesty,” with a “distinctly regional flavor.” For Sade Onadiji, Rotel was one of the essential ingredients her mother adopted when she moved to Texas from Grenada. “I only use it for nachos and queso,” Onadiji says. “It’s part of my mom’s queso recipe, which I’m sure she had to pick up in Texas, because she’s an immigrant from a country where queso isn’t a thing.”
The story of Rotel, which is now available in different spice levels and chile types, dates back to 1943. It originated in Elsa, Texas from a vegetable canner named Carl Roettele. Evolving from chile con queso in 19th century Mexico, recipes for cheese dip with various veggies in the early 1900s called for an exhausting process of roasting, peeling, and chopping chiles, then sautéing them with tomato and onions and mixing them with grated cheese. By the 1920s, this type of chile con queso was a common menu item in Texas restaurants and home kitchens. However, according to food writer Robert F. Moss, the cooking process of pepper roasting and cheese grating was exhausting, leading Texans to wonder if there was a simpler alternative.
A Mexican horticulturist named Fabian Garcia is considered the father of the Mexican food industry in the United States, according to Paul Bosland, director of New Mexico State University’s Chile Pepper Institute. In the early 20th century, Garcia invoked hybridization to create the “New Mexico No. 9,” a pepper that was a bit milder in heat, and was sized to allow for more cost-effective processing. This chile became the prototype for more commercial chile processors of both canned green chiles and dried red chiles. Merchandisers were able to scale up their production, which expanded the chile pepper’s reach and popularity across the south, including Texas.
Recognizing the penchant for tomatoes and chiles in Texas, as well as the frustration with preparing them, Roettele came up with a grand idea. “He saw how popular the combination of tomatoes and chiles were together, so one day, he just had this idea: Why not can those together?” says Rotel brand communications manager Dan Skinner. Skinner says while there are new flavors and versions of Rotel — like chipotle and chili fixin’s — the original recipe stands as a foundation. “Rotel,” a phonetic spelling of the inventor’s last name, took off.
Throughout the rest of the ’40s, Rotel became popular in the major Texas cities like Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio, finding a place in dishes like guacamole, stews, nachos, crockpot dishes, mac and cheese, and of course, queso. Numerous iterations of queso already existed throughout the south before the inception of Rotel — even inciting some friendly border wars between states — but Rotel quickly became an essential ingredient, and queso’s popularity as an essential dip for football games, family events, and other gatherings became omnipresent. Rotel began marketing itself as a queso ingredient in 1949 through a recipe for chile con queso that simply required adding the canned good to melted cheese and serving it with chips.
Similar to many other canned good companies of that time, like Van Camp’s, Dinty Dinty Moore Beef Stew, and Campbell Soup Company, after gaining hometown popularity, Rotel slowly began to spread to nearby states like Oklahoma and Arkansas in the ’40s and ’50s, inspiring a cult following of sorts in the South. Not having to dice peppers was appealing, and an inexpensive canned good that could add so much seasoning to household staples was appreciated. Between 1948 and 1958, the number of supermarkets in the United States doubled to more than 2,500 stores; though fresh ingredients were valued at the time, housewives gained a renewed appreciation for consumerism and convenience after World War II, sparking a devotion to canned goods that reached homes and neighborhood cooking competitions throughout the country, including the White House.
“In 1963, when Lady Bird Johnson was second lady, she gave Rotel its first big PR win when she listed some of her favorite Texas recipes,” Skinner says. “She had a chili recipe that she shared, and Ro-Tel was the secret ingredient.” Lady Bird’s Pedernales River Chili was served at the family ranch and the White House. Though many versions of that recipe simply called for canned tomatoes, purists have remained committed to the version that Lady Bird touted publicly, which includes the beloved ingredient in exchange for the listed whole tomatoes.
In 2005, Rotel and Velveeta, that other essential queso ingredient, became partners, allowing Rotel to reach the Northeast and Midwest. Over the last 10 years, Rotel has become nationally available at 95 percent of retail locations; it’s now available at about 82 percent of stores in the Northeast. In 2002, ConAgra Foods acquired the Rotel brand, and now, its reach is far beyond the Texas cities that first popularized the pantry item. According to financial news site 24/7 Wall St., “Original” Rotel was the fifth most sold canned canned good in the United States in 2018, with $69.1 million worth of cans sold. The “Mild” variety placed 24th, with an additional $36.4 million in sales in 2018.
According to Skinner, the flexibility of Rotel is what’s made the item so popular both in Texas and around the nation. “You can take a basic recipe you’ve done a million different ways, but then you add Rotel, and suddenly it becomes spicy mac and cheese,” he says. “I think that versatility appeals to chefs and home cooks.”
For Savannah Bock, who has roots in Georgia and South Carolina, Rotel was an essential ingredient at her home, even if she didn’t know it growing up. “My mom put it in so much: ropa vieja, stewed okra, and black beans whenever we’d have taco night,” Bock says. “I found out Rotel was that secret ingredient when I went to college and tasted it in this Velveeta queso mix — I realized that my mom had been using Rotel all along.”
But not everyone is fully committed to the can. Mexico native and Houston chef Felipe Riccio prefers making his queso — tomatoes and chiles included — from scratch. Still, he recognizes the value of pre-canned tomatoes for home cooks and chefs alike.
“Rotel is a comfort food,” he says. “I don’t think it’s a bad product, I just prefer to tweak it or use it as a base.”
In a world burdened with the ongoing effects of a global pandemic, comfort food is exactly what many home cooks are looking for. “It just has a really nice flavor that’s unique, and slightly spicy,” says Bock. “It’s really something that you have to bring to your dishes.”
For home cooks and chefs throughout the south, Rotel will likely make an experience on the football snacks table, in warm stews, and in old family recipes. Packing the harmonious blend of tomatoes and spice, Rotel — demonstrative of a beautiful marriage between convenience and flavor — will be a fall pantry essential for years to come.

April 10, 2019: Columns
Mule, Calvin, Jim, and Kyle...
Tumblr media
By KEN WELBORN
Record Publisher
One Monday night after my Rotary meeting I returned to the offices of The Record and Thursday Printing to do the eternal paperwork that I stay behind on.
I heard the bell on the front door and went up front to greet my visitors, a man and his young daughter.  The man said they were looking in the windows and his daughter was fascinated by the fan that was slowly turning in the middle of the building.
Of course I told them they were welcome, and to quote Sonny Church, they were a "...fresh set of ears."
I explained to them that the airplane propeller on the fan was a gift from Harold "Mule" Ferguson, a Korean War veteran who was, for many years, a fixture I the skies over Wilkes County, whether it was in a hot air balloon or one of the various airplanes he owned from what I call a "flying lawn chair" on up.
After being gifted with the propeller, I was going to bolt it on the wall when I decided instead to send it to Calvin Linville in Roaring River and have him make something with it.  Calvin, a World War II Marine, was well known as something of a folk artist and was most often referred to as the "Red Baron of Roaring River" for his own exploits as a pilot. In no time he showed up with the fan I enjoy so much--which comes on each time I turn on the lights, and reminds me of two of my favorite folks every time I walk by.
From there the young lady and her dad asked a gazillion questions which I cheerfully answered, including queries about an old leather-covered camera, a 1925 portable record player which still plays shellac records perfectly, old bottles, typewriters, adding machines, and they even suffered politely through the long version of my Miss Mary Finley story.
One item in particular seemed to catch their eye was a 1907 Trogdon's Map of North Wilkesboro, which, at that time, I had just recently acquired.  The map hung in the offices of Attorney E. James Moore from 1957 until his retirement in 2014.  The map was produced by the Winston Land and Improvement Company and is really a great piece of history I remain very pleased to have.  It was, in effect, a sales brochure for the town with lots marked as occupied or vacant as well as a treasure trove of geographical and business facts that would hopefully entice folks to come visit and then move to North Wilkesboro.
The day I picked up the map was the day of his retirement. Heather Dean was with me and she took a photograph of Jim Moore next to the map to use in his retirement story.  As he stood by the map he asked if we would like to hear the story of how he came by the map.
Of course we did!
A veteran of World War II and Korea, Jim was unmarried in the 1950's and most days he would have lunch with his mother who lived on E Street close to the Presbyterian Church.  On one of those days, he heard a commotion outside and when he walked outside, he saw that a wreck had happened at the corner of Ninth and E streets.  A lady was injured, though not badly, and Jim patched her up and sent her to the hospital.
Well, it turns out that the lady I question was Miss Ina Myers, longtime secretary to the legendary North Wilkesboro attorney Kyle Hayes, who, among other things ran for governor in 1956.  The week after the accident, Mr. Hayes had this map delivered to Jim Moore's office as a "Thank You" for being so kind to Miss Ina.
So, indeed, this map is not just a piece of history, but its travels are somewhat historic to me as well.
I will forever be grateful to the late Jim Moore for the map and for the late Miss Ina Myers for her fortuitous bump-up in 1957.
My friend, Freddie Land, an American Hero
By HEATHER DEAN
Record Reporter
How do you start a column about a friend that you recently lost?
Record Editor Jerry Lankford reminded me that Pete Mann always said, “Tell the story like you were talking to a friend.”
I hope I do him justice.
Freddie was my friend, and a friend to many. A good old Boomer boy, we always had plenty to talk about, but upon reflection, not much of it was ever about him.
I met him several years ago, as he and Charlie and Greg would come in every Wednesday for lunch at The Dispensary, and I would see them at the various events at our VFW.
Like Charlie, Freddie served in Vietnam. They both wore woven cord bracelets with the colors of the Vietnam flag, and Freddie told me he made them- that’s how he passed his time in the evenings when his PTSD would flare up. He gave me one for my birthday that year.
In 2017, I attended the Purple Hearts Ceremony in Welcome, N.C., with Charlie, Greg, and Freddie – we loaded up in Charlie’s SUV, and listened to do-wop 50’s radio all the way down. Freddie, Charlie, and several of our VFW Post 1142 members were receiving this prestigious award on this occasion and even thought I was covering it for the paper, (Edition Aug. 23, 2017) I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.  I didn’t know the circumstances on why they received them, and they didn’t say, so I didn’t ask.
Knowing I have friends who are brave and went above and beyond the call was enough for me. The three of them even came with me to the N.C. Society of Historians’ awards ceremony when I received an award for the article I wrote about it. (Even though the three of them hate sitting still, they did for the several hours it took, and seemed pleased as punch to be there with me, and for that I will be ever grateful.)
One of the things I do in my job here at The Record is the obituary page. It amazes me every week how much you find out about a person when they die. So many of them have wonderful stories, and I wonder why they were never told until now. Probably because they were like Freddie, humble people who never considered themselves extraordinary, just doing what they had to do, never mind they were making history in the process.
On Friday, March 29, we held a Welcome Home Vietnam Day at the VFW Post, to honor those brave men and women that served and did not come back to a heroes welcome, and to hold space for those that didn’t come home. On Saturday Freddie passed away unexpectedly after having surgery.
At the funeral, I met the family he often spoke of. I had met his granddaughter before, as she came with him to lunch sometimes. We talked about Montana and horses. As I went through the line and introduced myself to the family, it turned out I didn’t need one. They knew me as Heather: The Girl from The Record, The Girl from Boomer, or The Girl that was a big help to local Veterans, and his family thanked me for being a friend of his. Now it was my turn to be pleased as punch.
I also found out how decorated Freddie was. In fact, many of his comrades didn’t know he had a shadowbox full of medals.  No less than 15 full medals, and several smaller devices. In the box were two yellowed newspaper paper clippings.
Freddie served a year in Vietnam. He participated in more than 120 aerial flights in three months over hostile territory, from October 1968 to February 1969, garnering him the Air Medal.
March 13: Bronze Star with “V” device was awarded for heroism in connection with military actions involving conflict with a hostile force.
August 14: Second Bronze Star awarded with “V” device and First Oak Leaf Cluster for heroism while serving as a machine gunner on top of a jeep as he provided security for a convoy. The convoy came under attack, and our Freddie stood exposed and fired back. Even though the machine gun jammed three times, he did not retreat. He cleared the jams and continued firing. The fourth time it jammed, he couldn’t get it cleared. Did he run? Hell no. He picked up an M-16 rifle off the ground and continued firing at the enemy, still exposed, still covering the convoy, effectively and accurately.
His citation read: “His bravery and devotion to duty under extremely hazardous conditions was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military services and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.”
January 2: While serving as a rifleman as an ambush patrol, he captured a Viet Cong Soldier, for which he received the Army Commendation Medal for Heroism with “V” device for Valor. Later he received a second Army Commendation Medal with “V device while serving as assistant gunner helping over-run an enemy force.
March 14: Freddie was wounded and stayed in the hospital (Camn Ranh Bay) for 28 days. This is what earned him the Purple Heart. Upon his dismissal he did not go home. He volunteered his last six months of service and went to Long Binh and joined the 64th Quartermaster Battalion where he becames Sp-5, drove a tanker and was yet again, a machine gunner on top of a jeep. (Again)
This assignment is when he was awarded his third Bronze Star, and second Oak Leaf Cluster. His citation stated: “By direction of the president, the Bronze Star Medal second Oak Leaf Cluster is presented top Sp-4 Frederick A. Land, United States Army who through unwavering efforts and professional ability obtained outstanding results despite the adverse conditions incident to combat involvement, during the period of October 1968-January 1969, with sense of urgency to complete the mission, he set an example that inspired his associates to strive for maximum performance. His outstanding actions, materially contributed to the efforts of the United States in the role of the Republic of Vietnam. His praiseworthy achievement and dedicated initiative are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Ninth Infantry Division and the United States Army.”
His other awards included a Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Services Medal, Meritorious Unit Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and Expert Rifleman’s Badge. Upon leaving Vietnam, Freddie came home for 30 days, and then went to Oklahoma, where he trained with missiles.
Now, ask me how much of this I knew while he was living. But also ask me who I know I could call to get me out of a Boomer ditch at 3 a.m. if need be.  Freddie Land, that’s who.
For Zion’s sake I will not be silent
By EARL COX
Special to The Record
April 9th was election day in Israel.  As of this writing which is April 8th, it is uncertain who will be the next prime minister of Israel.  Loyalties and the polls have been changing almost minute by minute. By the time this goes to print,  I pray Israel's prime minister remains Benjamin Netanyahu and there are good reasons for this however since I am not a citizen of Israel, why should I care?  Let me explain.
As an American Christian who has had the privilege of working in senior level positions for three U.S. presidents and who has enjoyed a close association with three of Israel’s prime ministers, I have had the opportunity of experiencing behind-the-scenes workings thereby gaining insight not colored by the anti-Israel media.
Without question, evangelical Christians are Israel's strongest supporters and a vast number of American evangelical Christians believe as I believe.  Because I am not an Israeli citizen, and not even a Jew, I realize that injecting myself into the Israeli election is a highly sensitive act.  However, for Zion's sake, I will not be silent.
Around the world people are seeking "change" however change just for the sake of something new or different is not necessarily a good idea.  It is incumbent upon all who have the privilege of voting in any country around the world, to carefully consider the credentials of all those seeking election to public office. Personalities are not what’s important.  What’s important is the outcome of what will, or will not be, accomplished through their leadership.  This applies in Israel, the United States and in every democratic country around the world.
For the past several months I have talked with Israelis and others who have vested interests in the future of Israel.  Opinions vary greatly. However, the consensus is that there is only one candidate who is deemed to be able to move Israel forward considering the current political climate and the hostile world stage.  While logic and reason do not always prevail in this world where a person such as AOC is given headline coverage on an almost daily basis, I pray Israel is (remains) in capable hands.
Under Netanyahu’s leadership, Israel has enjoyed unprecedented economic success.  Since the 2009 elections, when he began his second term in office, the standard of living in Israel has risen by 55 percent in real terms; GDP has increased 40 percent from $30,000 to $42,000; unemployment has dropped from 7.5 percent to under 4 percent.   Therefore, Israeli citizens are far better off than they were before Netanyahu took office:  average wages have increased by 25 percent; restaurants are full and record numbers of Israelis are vacationing overseas; inequality has narrowed; and the percentage of the budget devoted to education, health and welfare has increased significantly. Netanyahu is the only Israeli leader with a proven economic track record.  Gantz, Ya’alon and Ashkenzazi have no experience to draw upon.  And, Lapid’s record as finance minister was not impressive.
Netanyahu has greatly improved Israel’s international standing.  He has translated Israel’s growing economic and technological prowess into impressive diplomatic achievements.  He has restored ties with several African nations, including Muslim countries.  He has created regional alliances with Greece and Cyprus and has hosted a non-stop stream of foreign leaders.  Under Netanyahu Israel has become a regional power, developing ties with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states thereby harnessing common interests—primarily the fear of Iran.  This occurred in spite of protestations that such ties could not be developed without progress on the Palestinian issue.  In addition, Netanyahu has also strengthened Israel’s ties in Asia and has upgraded relations with Japan and India.  He has produced a dramatic increase in trade with China and also opened new markets in the region.  As if that weren’t enough, thanks to Netanyahu, ties with South America have also blossomed.  And, in spite of the complex situation in Syria, he has strengthened relationships with Russia.
One of Netanyahu’s greatest achievements is the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital by the United  States and other countries.  In addition, the United States and other countries are in the process of formally recognizing Israeli sovereignty on the Golan Heights.  Another success is that the label “occupied territory” has been removed in official U.S. State Department language on the West Bank.  No other Israeli leader has had the tenacity and long-term vision to create such dramatic changes in Israel’s diplomatic standing nor would they have been willing and able to achieve these strategic foreign policy goals.  In addition, Netanyahu has demonstrated an iron-willed backbone stance to international pressure.  He faced down President Barack Obama on the settlements and on the nuclear deal.  Netanyahu’s influence and effort enabled a reversal of the Iran nuclear deal under President Trump.  No other Israeli leader could have generated such achievements on the international stage.
Think about all the critical defense and strategic challenges that Israel constantly faces.  During his tenure, Netanyahu has stood up to and handled them very well.  For example, he has exercised caution in the use of force, but at the same time he has not hesitated to act on multiple fronts where necessary.  The Gaza belt has experienced significantly fewer numbers of rockets firing at Israel.  In fact, residents of the Gaza belt enjoyed the most extended quiet period since the 2005 disengagement, except for the 2018 use of incendiary balloons.  In Syria, Netanyahu has managed to keep Iranians from building up capabilities to use against Israel through both extensive strikes on Iranian targets and weapon deliveries to local proxies.  In addition, he leveraged diplomatic influence via Russia.
The future of Israel is of vital importance to the world, to the United  States, and to the evangelical Christian community.  While only Israeli citizens have the right to vote in Israeli elections,  all Christians have the responsibility to pray for Israel and her people.  What happens in Israel has an impact on the entire Middle East and, in fact, the entire world.  Having the right leadership at the helm is vitally important to the safety and security of Israel by keeping rogue nations of the Middle East in check from which we all benefit.  So, while I pray that Benjamin Netanyahu remains the prime minister of Israel, no matter who the Israeli people have elected to serve as their leader, I know I have a responsibility to pray daily for the peace of Jerusalem as God directs and to pray for all of Israel.  But, this is not just my responsibility.  It is the responsibility of all who love the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It's in the Bible!

Mid-century Modern Farmhouse
After seeing a some darling coastal interiors this week, I am excited to share this “mid-century meets modern farmhouse” with a rustic exterior on our weekly “Interior Design Ideas” series.  Here, the interior designer, Kelsey McGregor of Kelsey Leigh Design Co. shares some more details:
“The majority of my inspiration comes from elements in nature. This project was inspired by the quaint town of Telluride, Colorado, a mountain haven nestled in the Rocky Mountains. This home is in Edmond, Oklahoma, where there are, in fact, zero mountains on hand. That’s why we wanted to create a serene, home-away-from-home, vacation get-away. The design was a fusion of intentional rustic elements, traditional roots and fresh modern touches like industrial lighting to ground the space but also add a modern twist. The house is bathed in natural light and backs up to wooded green space, so we kept the space open with a lot of windows and painted the walls a slight gray to accentuate and mimic the outdoors. Hickory hardwood flooring is consistent through this open concept floor plan designed by McGregor Homes in Oklahoma City, which lent perfectly to the mountain vibes we were trying to achieve.”
Start pinning your favorite interior design photos and have a good time, my friends!

15 TO WATCH/5 SPORTS TECH/POWER OF SPORTS 5: RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 4 with Jacob Aere
The MLS ball is rolling. This weekend saw Major League Soccer kick off season 24, complete with new teams, new messaging, and a new playoff format. New this year is the addition of a 24th club in FC Cincinnati, along with a new stadium in Minnesota, Allianz Field. MLS also launched the league’s new mobile app campaign – “Live Your Colors” – which will run on broadcast and digital platforms throughout the season. The league will look to top last season’s successes, which included record revenue for attendance and record TV viewership. On the sponsorship side, Sporting Kansas City and Hallmark locked in a creative new partnership designed to align the brands around “opportunities to put more care into the world by reaching fans, players and families across the soccer community.” In Indianapolis, the Indiana state senate has approved legislation that "keeps the effort alive to fund" a $150 million stadium for an MLS team, according to the Indianapolis Star. The bill would also fund a proposed 25-year lease extension for the Pacers at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and an Indiana Convention Center expansion.
D.C. United holds “Kick It With Qatar,” a free pre-season event at Audi Field in association with the Embassy of the State of Qatar to kick-off the 2019 MLS season. Highlighting the first World Cup to be hosted in the Middle East and preparing for a continued relationship between health and wellness, sport, and communities, “Kick It With Qatar” is a D.C. United soccer festival and a free event to the public featuring food, soccer, and culturally significant activities for families at D.C. United’s home at Audi Field. The event took place on Saturday, March 2, the day before global soccer icon Wayne Rooney and D.C. United took on 2018 MLS Cup Champions, Atlanta United, in the 2019 home opener. 3,500 free tickets were made available for the event. Andy Bush, D.C. United Chief Revenue Officer, said: “We are very pleased to introduce this preseason open day in association with the Qatar Embassy for our Black-and-Red supporters. We would like to thank the Ambassador of Qatar and his colleagues for their support.” The Embassy of the State of Qatar looks to strengthen bonds between Qatar and the U.S. through a cultural showcase.
To commemorate fans and players across Latin American and US Hispanic communities, the NBA is celebrating its 13th annual Noches Éne•Bé•A Latin nights program. Throughout the month of March, NBA games will feature celebratory warmup shirts and merchandise as well as 15 games with in-arena festivities. All 30 NBA teams wearing specially-designed Fanatics Branded Noches Éne•Bé•A warmup shirts during the first two weeks of March. The celebrations will be supported by unique content on the league’s English and Spanish-language social media pages. The NBA has proven time and again that it is a trend setter in cultural outreach across the globe, whether than means signing signature Eastern European players or conducting off season marketing tours in China. The annual Latin nights program is just another example of this mindset, albeit conducted here at home.
The NBA sees a big payoff for a little patch. The NBA’s jersey patch program is more than halfway through its three-season test and the results are clear: It’s a slam dunk. As the league continues to search for new revenue, the patch program has delivered. The 29 deals – the Oklahoma City Thunder remain the only club without a patch partner – generate more than $150 million per year in new revenue for the teams, while sponsors receive 25%-50% more exposure than they would have on a comparable spend, according to Navigate Research. With that in mind, the league is trying to figure out how to make more money off the program. One way is to expand where jerseys with team patches are sold. Fans want exact replicas of what players wear on-court, but those can’t be found at a department store or sporting goods website. Fans can only get those at team-controlled stores or sites, and even then they are tough to find. The patch sponsorship pilot program has far exceeded league expectations. In April, 2016, Commissioner Adam Silver projected the sponsorships would generate around $100 million in newfound revenue, so the league has exceeded its goal by more than 50%.
Human Kinetics and Mascot Books have launched one of the most anticipated sports business chronicles ever assembled, The Sport Business Handbook: Insights From 100+ Leaders Who Shaped 50 Years of the Industry. This anthology, compiled by Rick Horrow with Rick Burton and Myles Schrag, will take fans, students and those involved in the sports and entertainment industry into the lives of more than 100 executives during the boom era of sports business and marketing. The collection features pieces from league commissioners such as Gary Bettman of the NHL, Don Garber of MLS, Paul Tagliabue of the NFL, Oliver Luck of the XFL,  and Nick Sakiewicz of The National Lacrosse League; executives such as NBC Sports president Mark Lazarus, Liverpool’s Peter Moore, the Vikings’ Kevin Warren, and Larry Lucchino of the Red Sox; administrators such as the University of Oklahoma’s Joe Castiglione, Arizona State’s Ray Anderson, and N.C. State’s Deborah Yow; and professional athletes such as the Miami Heat’s Shane Battier, Olympic champions Scott Hamilton and Angela Ruggiero, and baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. These leaders tell stories in their own words about lessons learned, achieving success and overcoming failure, and ultimately inspire readers to forge their own paths in the industry.
Washington Capitals' Alex Ovechkin tops NHL jersey sales since season's start. The Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin has "surged back to the top of the NHL's best-selling jerseys" after winning his first Stanley Cup last season, according to ESPN.com. Ovechkin last season finished sixth in "overall jersey sales," with Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews "topping the list for the first time." Matthews currently has the "fourth-best selling jersey in the NHL." Penguins center Sidney Crosby was "second to Matthews last season and is currently second to Ovechkin" in 2018-2019. Two trends in NHL jersey sales have continued this season. Las Vegas Golden Knights "mania is still running wild," as Marc-Andre Fleury "moved from No. 4 in the team's inaugural season to No. 3" in 2018-2019. The league’s annual outdoor games "still fuel sales,” including participants in this season's Stadium Series in Philadelphia. Another factor in jersey sales this season has been the return of third jerseys for NHL teams – alternate jerseys are perennially popular in all pro sports leagues.
Bryce Harper signs with the Phillies in record 13-year, $330 million deal. Bryce Harper agreed to a record-setting13-year, $330 million contract with the Phillies last week, completing a "protracted, four-month journey through free agency," according to the Washington Post. Harper’s deal surpassed Giancarlo Stanton’s 2014 extension with the Marlins, a 13-year, $325 million deal, as the "largest contract in the history of major North American sports." Harper's deal includes a "no-trade clause and has no opt-outs," according to sources, indicating that he is "committed to the Phillies for possibly the rest of his career." As soon as Harper's No. 3 jersey "hit the shelves at the team store at Citizens Bank Park," cash registers "started racking up sales soon after,” according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Meanwhile, Phillies Managing Partner John Middleton said that the team has "already sold 220,000 tickets in the first 48 hours since the signing."
PGA Tour now accepting gambling related sponsorships. The PGA Tour has revised its regulations toward sponsorships with gambling brands, which can now be considered for Official Marketing Partners for all six tours overseen by the PGA Tour. In addition, tournaments and players also can seek sponsored deals with such entities. “As the situation with legalized sports betting in the U.S. has evolved since the Supreme Court’s ruling last May, we’ve seen broader acceptance in sports betting and gaming involvement with pro sports,” PGA Tour Senior Vice President Andy Levinson said. “We felt it was time to look at our policies, given the public perception around gaming, and to update those policies to be consistent with public sentiment.” The PGA Tour is making major sponsorship changes by allowing certain gambling deals and broadening the liquor category for players. At a Tour meeting at the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, players were briefed on the changes that now will allow sponsorships with casinos and gambling resorts, effective immediately. The Tour is also allowing official marketing partnerships and tournament title deals with certain gambling entities and daily fantasy sports concerns.
Mars and Joe Gibbs Racing announce partnership extension. Mars announced a multi-year extension to its partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) that will see the confectionery giant continue to serve as the primary sponsor of the No. 18 M&M'S Toyota in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. In addition, JGR has extended their relationship with Kyle Busch, which will continue to see NASCAR's "Candyman" behind the wheel of the No. 18 M&M'S Toyota. Away from the track, JGR and Kyle Busch are also an impressive partnership for Mars, pioneering the use of driver and team star power through savvy social and digital marketing techniques to strengthen the relationship with NASCAR fans, while also expanding into new audiences. As Jackie Gleason might say, “How sweet it is.”
JP Dellacamera and former U.S. Women’s National Team player Aly Wagner will serve as the lead broadcasters for Fox Sports’ coverage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer. The network will have more than 800 hours of linear and digital coverage of the tournament and will air all 52 matches live, including 22 on broadcast television – more than any Women’s World Cup to date. Fox Sports will air two daily studio shows from its set at Place du Trocadéro in Paris, as well as a Twitter live-streamed show every match day. "Fox Soccer Tonight," a late-night studio show shot in Los Angeles, will wrap up the matches and air Concacaf Gold Cup highlights. With fewer than 100 days left until the tournament, Fox Sports will begin airing a new spot titled “Remember Us,” part of the “All Eyes on Us” campaign. It features the USWNT and will appear across Fox, FS1, FS2, Fox News, and its RSNs. In the U.S., the FIFA Women’s World Cup has consistently produced ratings and attendance that rivaled the men’s tournament. Organizers are expecting more of the same this summer.
Fanatics will sell sports merchandise via South Korean site Coupang. According to SportsBusiness Journal, Fanatics is taking the wraps off a 10-year deal with Korean e-commerce site Coupang, in which Fanatics will launch a store offering hundreds of thousands of licensed sports items in May. The “marketplace” deal includes an exclusive provider designation for Fanatics, and follows a similar arrangement Fanatics made with Walmart.com, announced last month. Renowned as the “Amazon of South Korea,” nine-year-old Coupang is that country's largest online retailer, with a valuation of $9 billion. Late last year, Coupang got a $2 billion capital infusion from a fund controlled by SoftBank, which in 2017 made a $1 billion investment in Fanatics. Like the majority of America’s pro sports leagues, Fanatics is fully appreciating the growth potential in Asia; South Korea is only its latest conquest.
As the California pro tennis season gets underway in Indian Wells, Orange County Breakers owner Eric Davidson has been named World Team Tennis' new Chairman of the Board after acquiring an ownership share in the team tennis organization. Davidson now shares the largest stake of ownership in the league with San Diego Aviators owner Fred Luddy, billionaire businessman who is the founder of ServiceNow, a cloud computing company, while league founder and tennis legend Billie Jean King also remains a co-owner of WTT. As WTT Chairman of the Board, Davidson will oversee the general direction of the league, WTT CEO Carlos Silva, and WTT's Board of Directors. Meanwhile back in Indian Wells, tennis season has officially arrived in the Coachella Valley, and the Indian Wells Tennis Garden is in full bloom as the festivities surrounding the 2019 BNP Paribas Open are underway. The picturesque venue is bursting with greenery, palm trees, flower walls, and even a Secret Garden ahead of the main event, to be held March 4-17, and attracting the vast majority of the world’s top men’s and women’s players.
Epic Games laid out the road ahead for Fortnite esports, where $100 million is up for grabs this year, leading into this summer’s Fortnite World Cup. The Fortnite World Cup, where $30 million will be on the line, will take place in New York City July 26-28 with each player guaranteed a minimum of $50,000, and featuring both an individual competition (Solos) and a two-player-team event (Duos). Leading up to the championship, players can punch their ticket well as providing prize support to select third-party tournaments. These initiatives will allow the developer to award the remainder of the $100 million in prizing it committed to Fortnite’s first competitive season last year via ten weekly online qualifier tournaments beginning on April 13. Each qualifier will award $1 million in total prizing. The news was announced in an esports update from Epic Games, which also noted that the publisher will offer an additional $1 million a week in separate tournaments through the end of the year, with competitions that will “feature a wider variety of modes and formats.” In another sign of its reach, Epic also vowed to continue to offer prize support to select third-party tournaments.
HBO, MLB Partner on "Game of Thrones" bobbleheads. HBO has announced a partnership with MLB and all 30 clubs to release "team-branded 'Game of Thrones'-themed bobbleheads in conjunction with the April 14 premiere of the show’s final season." According to SportsBusiness Journal, every team will offer a “Night King” and an “Ice Dragon” bobble. A dozen clubs "have held a 'Game of Thrones' bobblehead game-day giveaway over the past two seasons," but these are the "first such 'GoT' bobbles that HBO has licensed for retail sale." Fans can now begin ordering the items. The bobbleheads are being manufactured by FOCO, which also is a licensee of the NFL, NBA, NHL, NASCAR, MLS, and many colleges. This latest MLB-Hollywood tie up is much less controversial than the league’s most infamous deal, a 2004 agreement with Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios to allow “Spider-Man 2” logos to appear on bases and on-deck circles.
U.S. Women’s National Team wears names of iconic women on jerseys during match. The USWNT "wore names of iconic and influential women who inspire them on the back of their jerseys" in a 2-2 tie against England last night at Nissan Stadium "in connection with the SheBelieves theme of the SheBelieves Cup." The names, according to the Tennessean, "ranged from Nobel Prize winners, athletes, activists ... all of whom are women from diverse backgrounds." Among the names that "made an appearance" were Beyonce, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Serena Williams, and Mother Teresa. An "announced crowd of 22,125 fans" were on hand for the game, played with less than 100 days left until the FIFA Women’s World Cup this summer in France. The SheBelieves Cup, far from a marketing gimmick, is a singular opportunity for U.S. women’s soccer’s best of the best to honor the best of the best in other disciplines.
Tech Top Five
MLB gives Sportradar AG its exclusive data for sports betting wagers. A multiyear contract has authorized Sportradar to sell Major League Baseball’s official data to bookmakers and media companies in the U.S. and on an international scale. According to Bloomberg, the Swiss firm will be the exclusive gatekeeper for MLB data starting at the beginning of the 2019 season and will serve as an intermediary for sports-betting operators that want to offer in-game bets on baseball games. With the deal, MLB joins the NBA as the only major sport leagues to have U.S. gambling data deals. In addition to data for sportsbooks, Sportradar will have the rights to distribute live game video to overseas gambling houses to pair alongside odds. With the naturally slower pace of baseball, gambling provides huge potential to draw in new fans around the globe who will want to place wagers throughout the 9+ innings of each 162 regular season games.
In addition to expanding into sports gambling, MLB is diving into esports. With the NBA, NFL, NHL, and MLS all sporting their own gaming leagues, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred now describes esports as a “weak spot” for his organization. The only moves that MLB has made into the esports market so far are two Home Run Derby virtual reality tournaments at the All-Star Game and Little League World Series. According to SportsPro, Manfred stated that esports are a “real priority for us going forward. It is tough to say more than this but I’m pretty confident that in 2019 we will have a nice announcement in that space in terms of platform-based games.” Manfred noted the soccer video game FIFA as a dynamic way to engage fans, and with the video game R.B.I. Baseball resurging over the past handful of years and MLB The Show dominating the baseball gaming market, Manfred and crew have multiple options.
Sports betting is increasing the subscriber count for Bleacher Report (B/R). Subscriptions are flowing in for B/R’s betting channel which has grown three times faster than all other general content channels. Although the B/R subscriptions are free, the company can use the channels to mine user information on programming, advertising, and marketing. According to Reuters, B/R’s app has been downloaded more than 20 million times since 2011 and has nearly five million active monthly users. B/R also announced that it will open a studio inside one of Caesars Entertainment Corp’s Las Vegas casino sometime in April. After the Supreme Court ruled to legalize, regulate, and tax sports betting last May, now roughly 63% of fans between 21-34 years of age think wagering on sports is acceptable, while 51% of all sports fans welcome sports gambling. Many companies have rushed in to be the gatekeepers of sports betting knowledge and it seems that B/R is one leading the pack.
Nike becomes the League of Legends Pro League’s (LPL) official supplier of footwear and apparel in China. NIKE China announced a four-year partnership that will make the sports company the exclusive apparel and footwear partner of the LPL through 2022.
