Ooh, The Last Sequoia you're working on is really evocative for me. Part of my work two summers ago was helping with fuels reduction in a seqouia grove. 5 years after a hot fire killed more than half that grove. And months after the grove 10 miles away was saved from a big fire due to fuels reduction efforts the year before. I'm applying for a Masters program where I might be working on forest fire ecology... This is just to say that your painting isn't even done and it's making me Feel Things.
Thank you! I was thinking about this particular poem when I was working on it, it's stuck with me for years.
They will soon be down
To one, but he still will be For a little while    still will be stopping
The flakes in the air with a look, Surrounding himself with the silence Of whitening snarls. Let him eat The last red meal of the condemned
To extinction, tearing the guts
From an elk. Yet that is not enough For me. I would have him eat
The heart, and from it, have an idea Stream into his gnarling head That he no longer has a thing To lose, and so can walk
Out into the open, in the full
Pale of the sub-Arctic sun Where a single spruce tree is dying
Higher and higher. Let him climb it With all his meanness and strength. Lord, we have come to the end Of this kind of vision of heaven,
As the sky breaks open
Its fans around him and shimmers And into its northern gates he rises
Snarling    complete    in the joy of a weasel With an elk’s horned heart in his stomach Looking straight into the eternal Blue, where he hauls his kind. I would have it all
My way: at the top of that tree I place
The New World’s last eagle Hunched in mangy feathers    giving
Up on the theory of flight. Dear God of the wildness of poetry, let them mate To the death in the rotten branches, Let the tree sway and burst into flame
And mingle them, crackling with feathers,
In crownfire. Let something come Of it    something gigantic    legendary
Rise beyond reason over hills Of ice    screaming    that it cannot die, That it has come back, this time On wings, and will spare no earthly thing:
That it will hover, made purely of northern
Lights, at dusk    and fall On men building roads: will perch
On the moose’s horn like a falcon Riding into battle    into holy war against Screaming railroad crews: will pull Whole traplines like fibres from the snow
In the long-jawed night of fur trappers.
But, small, filthy, unwinged, You will soon be crouching
Alone, with maybe some dim racial notion Of being the last, but none of how much Your unnoticed going will mean: How much the timid poem needs
The mindless explosion of your rage,
The glutton’s internal fire    the elk’s Heart in the belly, sprouting wings,
The pact of the “blind swallowing Thing,” with himself, to eat The world, and not to be driven off it Until it is gone, even if it takes
Forever. I take you as you are
And make of you what I will, Skunk-bear, carcajou, bloodthirsty
Non-survivor.
Lord, let me die    but not die
Out.
James Dickey, “For the Last Wolverine” from The Whole Motion: Collected Poems 1945-1992.

3.170 One more thing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I probably should have waited to have the next conversation, but I figured since we were getting everything in the open, we may as well discuss finding a new house. Besides, she said she missed talking, right? Autumn in San Sequoia is beautiful. It's refreshingly cool in the mornings, and evenings, and warm during the day. I suggested we take Desi and hang out in our side yard for a bit. A little while ago, I packed up the yoga mats I had out there and set up a nice outdoor chill spot. It's clear I'm not gonna achieve my yoga dreams, if you can even call them that. We weren't using the space, so I turned it into something we will definitely use. Since Desiree will be walking soon, I'll have to get her some toys and things out here. But for now, she can take a nap under the sun in the fresh air while Sophia and I talk business.
Tumblr media
It was a little cool, so Sophia lit a fire to keep the baby warm. I let us enjoy the weather and silence for a few moments before bringing up Alessia's conversation.
"So, ummm, after the memorial, Less told me she wants to move."
"Oh! That's great. So she's gonna live in your dad's house then?"
"No."
"Oh. So you're gonna help her find a place?"
"Yes, but not exactly what you're thinking."
Tumblr media
She gave me that "Watcher, here we go," face, and I knew I had to sweeten this deal even before I presented it.
"Dub and Maia live in a duplex. They live on one side and rent out the other. I think a situation like that will be ideal for us. Less will be right next door if something happens. We'll share a backyard so the kids can grow up and play together. It's perfect for us. And if Less ever wants to move out, we can rent it to another family and have another stream of income. It's a win win for all of us."
"Wait," she said. "You want us to move? We just got here!"
"True, but things change. It's no big deal. We'll still be in San Sequoia. Just another neighborhood."
Tumblr media
"But I love it here," she said. "We spent so much time and money making it our own. Luca, you proposed to me here! I gave birth here! This is my home!"
Sometimes I forget Sophia lived in one place for a long time. Plus, she's a lot more sentimental than I am. This house is the sixth home I've lived in. Moving is no big thing to me, even though this particular home is special to me too. I dreamed about living here; I longed for it. But life hasn't turned out how we thought it would, so my priorities are different now. While I could accomplish my goals perfectly from here, I'd be more at ease somewhere else.
"I understand. We've had lots of great memories here. And I know you're concerned about me being too involved in Less' life, but I think the best way to minimize my time away from home is to have her as close as possible. I promised Mama I'd look after her, Sophia."
Tumblr media
She let out a looooong sigh and sat in silence for a bit. I wanted to know what went on in her head, but I knew I needed to let her work it out within herself first, so I waited until she was ready to continue.
"What about this house? What will happen to it?"
I honestly wasn't too keen on selling it. I worked really hard to get it, and I didn't want anyone else to enjoy the fruit of my labor.
"We'll keep it," I said, hoping we'll be able to afford to buy a new house without selling this one. "Less won't need us so close forever. This duplex situation is just temporary, so we can come back here when it's over. Maybe we'll rent it out while we're gone."
Tumblr media
Sophia winced at that idea.
"Or it can just sit here until we come back," I said.
She nodded and sighed.
"I don't want to move," she said. "I don't think it's necessary. But everything you said makes sense. I do want Desi to be close to her cousins. The thought of her having easy access to them sounds nice. And I know how much you love your sister."
"Thank you. I'm sorry we have to leave here, but I really do think this will be good for all of us."

This was Munin's first trip to the snow, and she did a lot of experimenting! She liked the sheltered area under the trees by the stream.
(Munin is my African raven, and this video was taken in Sequoia National Park in California.)
Video Captions: Munin had fun experimenting with snow! She's flapping her wings the way she does when she bathes. It looks like the snow wasn't powdery enough to toss around. She's pressing herself into the snow here. It's like she wants to burrow into the snow… next time we'll take her when it's fluffy!

HEY, YOU!
🦖 HOLY COW LOOK AN AWESOME DINOSAUR?
No??
AAAAHHHH 📢📢📢
Okay, that looks like it hooked you.
You're cool. You probably really like fantastic writing, unique artstyle, fantasy biology, characters with depth, and creative concepts that make you scream and shout. Maybe you like Pikmin, Subnautica, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Renfield, Hannibal, hell even Lethal Company (if you're like me). Maybe you like Star Trek or other SciFi shows (if you're somebody I want to try being one day, except I lack the time and dedication). I can't spoil anything, but if that kind of design or writing appeals to you,
YOU NEED TO WATCH SCAVENGERS REIGN.
I am the girl who can't get into many things. I am the girl who falls out of many more, as soon as they stop gripping at my attention. This show has me on the edge of my seat, screaming and crying and furiously typing and deleting drafts of unaddressed e-mails begging for MORE.
• Art Style & Animation: 10/10, focusing on all of the little gesticulative details that make these characters and creatures feel real.
• Voice Acting: 11/10! Need I say more? Whoever wrote these scripts did AMAZINGLY, and those who voiced them did even better.
• Creature Design: 10/10. All of them are unique and bizarre, with just enough hinting towards evolutionary cohesion to make me want a biological encyclopedia, and maybe three more.
• Sound Design: 10/10. This is your Subnautica. This is your Zelda. This is your Completely Unique From The Aforementioned While Still Making Me Want To Chew Through A Giant Sequoia With Excitement. Also, the sheer amount of detail is riveting.
• Character Writing: 10/10. I am gripped by every single one and I want 80,000 fanfics and I bet my only hand that half of them are going to be you guys simping for Kamen or Sam or literally everyone else oh my gosh. Brilliant representation of an ASD-coded character (and some narcissists with depth!) as well as very intriguing LGBT and heterosexual relationships (romantic and platonic! When was the last time we saw a girl and a guy act normal around each other?) with heartgripping writing and artistic cinematography.
• Literally everything else: 10/10
Streaming on HBO Max (or do they just call it Max now???)
Pleaaaase please please reblog this if you know someone who will like it! Please reblog this if you like it! Please let the world know about this masterpiece.

Yosemite National Park, CA (No. 2)
Yosemite National Park is a national park in California. It is bordered on the southeast by Sierra National Forest and on the northwest by Stanislaus National Forest. The park is managed by the National Park Service and covers 759,620 acres (1,187 sq mi; 3,074 km2) in four counties – centered in Tuolumne and Mariposa, extending north and east to Mono and south to Madera. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is internationally recognized for its granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, giant sequoia groves, lakes, mountains, meadows, glaciers, and biological diversity. Almost 95 percent of the park is designated wilderness. Yosemite is one of the largest and least fragmented habitat blocks in the Sierra Nevada.
Its geology is characterized by granite and remnants of older rock. About 10 million years ago, the Sierra Nevada was uplifted and tilted to form its unique slopes, which increased the steepness of stream and river beds, forming deep, narrow canyons. About one million years ago glaciers formed at higher elevations. They moved downslope, cutting and sculpting the U-shaped Yosemite Valley.

Novel Syllabus 2024
This coming year I think I'm going to be on here more often than I am on twitter or elsewhere, and as part of that, I'm going to start documenting the process of writing my novel more actively. Below are my writing goals for the coming year as well as my reading list of texts for inspiration, genre/background research, comps, etc. Would welcome any suggestions of texts (any genre/discipline) pertaining to Antigone, death & resurrection, Welsh and Cornish myth and folklore, ecology & environmental crisis, and the Gothic.

Hex’s human disguise still glitches. She barely recognises herself when she catches her reflection in the frozen stream. If her disguise stays like this, she might get away with more trouble!
After spending time at her siblings’ houses, Hex feels more determined to get a place of her own. She’s bought a small plot of land in San Sequoia. She would have enough room to build a small house for herself, and maybe a furry friend too! The hard part is getting the money so the Sim God can start building!
Hex hunts around the neighbourhood, plucking plants and digging up rocks. She resorts to rooting through the piles of dirt that pets would dig through to find collectibles. By the end of her hunt, she’s tired and stinky!
Freshening up at the Elixirs and Brews bar sounds even more appealing now! Hex throws everything into her inventory before travelling to the bar.
