Oh my God, you guys this book is amazing! Definitely a five star rating. I had to force myself to put it down last night and picked it up to finish it first chance I got this morning. This made so much sense and made an actual depth for Cal. His Psychometry could have been a motivator to join the Empire as an Inquisitor, and it would have made him a fearsome interrogator. This game really needs a sequel #sequelplease

Inquisitor!Cal Kestis and psychometry (spoilers)

Had Cal become an Inquisitor, his gift of psychometry would’ve made him a perfect tracker… and a seriously fearsome interrogator. He could sense traces of a hiding Jedi, but also moments of their life, their emotions. By the time he would get his hands on them, he would’ve learned to know his target more intimately than other Inquisitors.

Just imagine this kind of power used for evil. Sensing all the little moments of fear and doubt and anger that would linger in places where a Jedi-on-the-run had stayed. All their loss and trauma and terror at what awaits them if caught, the doubts that must sneak into their mind, questioning their choices, the Jedi teachings, even the Light Side and Force itself. All the shame of failing others, all the cowardly choices they had to make to survive.

He would barely even need to use any violence to break them. He could sink a knife straight into their vulnerabilities and twist with just words until their confidence and willpower was gone. Imagine how terrifying it would be to face someone who you’ve never met, but who somehow knows intimate things about you, can talk about your vulnerable moments where nobody else was present. 

But also imagine the effect on the user. Every Inquisitor is a broken Jedi, stuck re-enacting the trauma they suffered through others. But for Cal to use his gift would truly mean re-living the past he should’ve left behind as an Inquisitor. Other Inquisitors might have the mercy of the Dark Side making them ultimately forget who they were once, their new persona taking over. For Cal, that would never truly happen - every time he read an object touched by a Jedi, he would live a moment of their life.  Again and again, he would re-live his own past emotions and his intimate connection to his targets would make the entire process much more emotionally charged.

Would the psychometry help keep some spark of Light alive inside him, connecting him to his own past in a way that can’t be severed? I think it would certainly make him more vulnerable to doubts and give him a greater chance to turn back. I wonder how Vader would view a skill like that - I think he could see how it could become a weakness, but at the same time it would be far too useful and rare of a gift to throw away. I think the Empire would work hard indeed to keep Cal on their side and broken and brainwashed. I imagine other Inquisitors would be ordered to keep a special eye on him, and step in if he ever betrayed signs of his loyalty faltering…

But then again, maybe the psychometry itself would become the ultimate motivator for staying on the Dark Side. Maybe the pain of endlessly reliving his past would make Cal especially desperate to “kill the past” like Kylo Ren would say, to destroy the weak boy whose pain and grief would continue to haunt him. Maybe the only way to handle the life of Jedi hunter would be to completely cut his past self away, create a new persona entirely like Vader and Kylo did, maybe even with a mask that could hide the emotions that cross his face when sensing a particularly powerful echo. For Cal, the torture inflicted on his targets would always be two-way, and only embracing the Dark Side could make it tolerable. Learning to receive sadistic pleasure from the suffering of his targets, but also at the same time, from the knowledge that every torture inflicted on his captures would also further destroy the young Padawan once named Cal Kestis who still lingered inside him and kept him weak - if only that side of him would die, he would never have to suffer again when his fingers  accidentally brushed against a lightsaber belonging to a Jedi and was suddenly again taken back to the days when he was safe and happy training under Jaro Tapal and knew nothing of Order 66 and Empire and years spent hiding and guilt that breaks you faster than the torture chamber.
