Y’know, instead of having me JUST complain about why i don’t like the direction of Tee K.O. 2, why don’t i actually talk about how i think they should’ve taken it? (As well as a personally better suggestion on how they could’ve celebrated their 10 year legacy with The Jackbox Party Packs)
I’ve just been all angry when it comes to the 10th pack and how especially awful the pack’s sequel treats both casual players AND fans, but i’m frankly tired of just airing out my frustrations! I want to add a bit more positivity by stating at least how i would’ve taken Tee K.O. 2, as well as taking it’s current direction and applying it in a less fan game-y way. If you’re interested in how i’d take the Tee K.O. 2, as well as how i’d take the concept of multiple Packs collaborating in one game: click “Keep reading”. It’s significantly more positive than my other posts about the 10th pack, that’s for certain!
So what i’d do for Tee K.O. 2 is that i’d play around with the fact that the Pack supports multiple languages, and have the sequel capitalize on that fact and embrace it! I present: Tee K.O. 2: World Tour.
Since the original is based around Japanese mythology and Yõkai, why not evolve from that concept? The shirt making tournament has moved from a National to International and there’s a bunch of players from around the globe wanting to bring home the title of victory!
Each player represents a different mythological creature from different parts of the world, like North Africa’s Were-hyena, Egypt’s Anubis, Philippines's Manananggal, Russia’s Baba Yaga, Mexico’s Chupacabra, and so on and so forth.
This would also explain why the original game’s Tournament Master isn’t hosting: because since the game no longer taking place in a national tournament, it wouldn’t make sense for him to still be hosting. So for a new host (or set of hosts for the other languages) to be in charge of the international league, it excuses the host’s absence without feeling like he was killed off!
It sounds like such an obvious step forward, so obvious that i came up with the idea back when i was making my own Jackbox Party Pack 10 concept years before it’s official announcement, but didn’t go through with it due to already having an idea for a sequel conceptualized. With hindsight: it would probably make me look like a prophet if i actually decided to go with my Tee K.O. 2 idea over Trivia Murder Party 3 and make the official Tee K.O. 2 look that much worse in comparison!
Now what would i do to celebrate The Jackbox Party Pack’s 10 year legacy? Well i’d move the 10th pack to next year! Because i don’t think a typical Party Pack would be able to fully capture everything without sacrificing it’s integrity.
So i’d make this year only have one game as an individual release...based on the Mario Party series!
Since Mario Party is about the Mario cast just having fun together in Party game filled with minigames, with several references to the games built into the mechanics; it would be PERFECT for an indulgent celebration of the Party Packs! ESPECTIALLY since the packs are based on BOARD GAMES like the Mario Party series!!
Because the hosts deciding that they had enough of hosting and to just goof off and have a little fun together this year, with a bunch of minigames referencing Jackbox Games’ history would make for an incredible love letter to the fans, as well as not be as blatantly alienating to casual players since “Hey, it’s a celebration, it’s to be expected that i’d be this referential to it’s history.” instead of just trampling on Tee K.O.’s integrity with really bad adaptions of character designs that can’t even reference their own games properly (i’m looking at you Quiplash player design and Alien victory animation).
What about the buildup? Simple! Show the minigames slowly throughout the year to generate enough hype for a board reveal! What are they based on? Well each of the pack’s boot-up screens of course! What about the hosts who don’t have bodies? Well there’s multiple ways to go about this: have them be hosts for their specific boards, allowing them to clash and bounce off each other like fans have been wanting for YEARS, or have them host minigames that reference the games that they are in. Or do both! Both is good.
Fans would go fucking crazy for something like that, and i doubt casual players would be against such a fun concept! Would it be bad? Considering how their Party Packs have been going, they’d probably fuck it up somehow, but i wanna be optimistic here and say that’ll at least be a fun novelty. And who knows? It’ll probably generate more hype for games that haven’t gotten much love and increase their chances of them getting a well deserved sequel!
And that’s what i’d do, what do you think? I’d love to know your opinions on my idea, what you’d do differently, and if you’d even prefer to have my idea over what we’re getting. I’d love to have a civil debate about it and i’m pretty open to hearing other people’s ideas!

This Should've Been an Email
Tumblr media
His mouth moved without it telling it to, then closed like whoever was possessing him didn’t know what to say either. There was something going on, something Etho could feel but didn’t understand. They were standing on the edge of the world, and Etho didn’t know how to tell Bdubs he was out of time. Was he out of time? Maybe he was just going insane again. Maybe-
“Etho, there’s a lot of void energy going on right now, can you focus-”
You can’t outsmart a god. You can only run.

[ READ HERE ] Latest addition to the Should've Could've Would've series and sequel to the YCAOverse byyyy incredible great @goingdownorup cinemaaaa is HERE and we are BACK IN THE BUILDING!!!
[rambling undercut]
you've fallen for my trap card, ramblings not about the actual fic yet sorry - I'm going to talk about art technicalities at you now :]
Ver without the text:
Tumblr media
I drew this up on a whim immediately after finishing the first chapter. Other than it being fanart, this year I want to think smarter when making elaborate pieces - this being the one of the first experiments on it.
Tumblr media
sketches have always been my starting foundation I usually go through a few iterations gradually building off the rough thumbnail all the way to lineart. Here I'm establishing perspective and rhythm (movement), using background and props to better frame the emphasis (focal) rather than overwhelm the eye with unnecessary detail.
Shirahama's Witch Hat Atelier manga panels were an inspiration for the lineart (reoccuring character. WHA changed my life)
Tumblr media
I even started actually putting base colours instead of skipping to shading... BASE COLOURS. BASE COLOURS WITHOUT SHADING? Crazy world we live in. Above were me testing which colours worked best for the background and purpose. Ethubs look a little out of place atm - this changes in solid filters
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shading itself was a lot of back and forth in constant fumbles to maintain the rhythm instructed in the lineart, adding emphasis how values needed to carry the visual communication of this piece especially with a line heavy background because of the wheatfields. Everything uses either cel shading, filters, or gradients - I wanted to find a way to add complexity to my regular rendering style without needing to manually blend/paint (takes too long)
During this stage, Heikala's watercolour art was the study in crowd control (backgrounds with organic repetition)
Tumblr media
Smaller misc details that couldn't fit anywhere in the previous pages. Overall while there are some things I still would change/redo, overall very pleased as a first (second) attempt ^_^

actually no i need to talk about the green witch arc. ciel and his band of merry fools go to germany and learn that this forest is haunted by WEREWOLVES and in it is a village full of WITCHES with cursed amulets and potions and whatever
and the immediate vibe is "lol what a bunch of bogus" which is really just batshit coming from the kid with a demon butler
and then woah big reveal! it wasn't werewolves or witches it was a covert military operation REPLETE with radar tracking (not a thing until wwii) and electronic displays (most likely crt screens, which again weren't fully developed until the 1930s) and TANKS. for reference the first "tank" was put together by a guy in 1899 who mounted a machine gun to THIS
Tumblr media
absolute paragon of engineering. the panzer (the exact model of tank in the arc) was not a thing until wwi.
and. and ciel and ESPECIALLY the Demon Butler in question are like. ohhhh yeah that makes more sense. the amulets were just transmitting our exact locations through technology that won't exist for another three decades. whew glad we sorted that one out. man wouldn't it have been CRAZY if it really was werewolves.

DATV is overly reliant on Supplemental Media - especially if you are a returning player
TL;DR: Supplemental material should not be required reading in order to understand what's going on in the main game -> it's additional material that enhances what we were given. If what we were given is lacking and unable to coherently tell us a story, then the writers and those in charge did not prioritize what was important.
Not a take that's unique to Dragon Age, but one that is very relevant when talking about DATV. I've made a few posts about plot/story points that either make no sense or have been dropped entirely in the lead up from DAI to DATV. Every now and then I get a few comments or messages about how certain points I made were addressed in supplemental material released in the lead up to this games release.
This isn't a call out post, by the way! But it's frustrating, to me, that this games writing is so lacking that my understanding is being inhibited because I can't remember details from a book I read two years ago - not to mention various podcasts, comics, and short stories. My understanding of a video game in a video game series should not be reliant on additional/optional content.
DATV is a weird game in that it is absolutely a 'soft/scorched earth' reboot while also marketing itself as a continuation to what was set up in Inquisition and Trespasser. Personally, I think that if you are up to number 4 in a game series, one with a continuous story-line, it should be expected that new players won't be able to catch up to everything -> it's the game developers job to make the world and story intriguing enough that the new players will go back to previous games in the series and fill in the blanks themselves.
Veilguard, as a sequel, is overly reliant on content that comes from outside the games themselves (including DLC's) if you want to make sense of the world and story. Trespasser left us with an epilogue that set up some plot points for the next game: Solas & the Veil, the Elven Rebellion, and War with the Qun - plot points that have been built up since the time of Origins. But when we get into DATV two of these points have been dropped and resolved, off-screen.
There are more questions, but these are the ones that bothered me the most while playing the game:
What happened to the Agents of Fen'harel/ Elven Rebellion? -> answered in a cursed reddit AMA.
What happened to the Qunari following Trespasser -> addressed in Tevinter Nights, and a codex entry you can pick up (optional).
Why is Skyhold infested with demons? -> mentioned in Tevinter Nights.
How did the Dalish go from worshiping their own pantheon to knowing they are false gods? (specifically those we meet in the Veil Jumpers) -> mentioned in the Missing comic series.
What's up with Nevarra's Royals? -> Tevinter Nights addresses that there is a power struggle in the Pentaghast family and the role of the Mortalitasi in making it worse - though it does not address the whole 'mage puppeting a corpse' issue and all the implications it has.
This is a video game series -> the bulk of the information required for me to understand the story and its relation to previous entries needs to be included in the final game version. I am playing a video game and not attending a uni class - I should not need to have a required reading list in order to understand what the fuck is going on. I should definitely not need to go onto a reddit AMA to understand what happened in-game, either.
What makes this stand out the most is that DAI was very successful in tying in previous games, DLC's, movies, and books! Inquisition did a great job in getting you up to speed on the events of the previous games early on, providing personalization if you played those games, and giving the player the opportunity to inquire into these events.
Hiding away the answers in additional material or a codex entry that may be missed is not good game design or good writing. DAI didn't assume that you had bought and played the Legacy DLC -> it made certain you experienced the conversation with Varric and Hawke if you wanted to proceed in the game. It didn't hide away imperative information in codex entries - it had characters talk about it in scripted scenes and encourage the player to ask more. You would actively need to avoid interacting with characters for you to not experience this information in DAI.
Leliana talks about her role during the Blight, her calling by the Maker, and her relationship with Dorothea/Justinia -> DAO and Leliana's Song DLC.
Cullen talks about his time as a templar at Kinloch & Kirkwall -> DAO and DA2.
Cassandra speaks about her history, investigation into Hawke, and the Seekers -> Dawn of the Seeker movie, DA2, & Asunder novel.
Varric talks about Hawke, Kirkwall, and Corypheous -> DA2 and Legacy DLC.
Cole talks about how he discovered he was a 'demon' - it leads to further conversations about Rhys, Evangeline, and Lord-Seeker Lambert -> Asunder novel.
Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts -> the game literally continues what the Masked Empire novel sets up, the Orlesian Civil War. The game does a decent job of telling us about the players (Celene, Gaspard, Briala etc...) and the reasoning behind the conflict through dialogue, the ability to explore the battlefields, quests, ambient dialogue, etc... The book is not required reading - though it greatly adds to the complexity of the characters, motivations, and political intrigue!
I never once, playing DA2 or DAI, felt penalized or like my experience was lacking because I had not engaged with supplemental material or DLC's. I got into Dragon Age when I was in high school, it wasn't until I graduated and began working after that I had the disposable income available for experiencing the extra material. I cannot say that for DATV - If you have played Inquisition and go into DATV straight from that you will, absolutely, be confused about how we got from A to B.
Which is especially strange to me!? Why is it that new players will be less confused than those that are returning players? It's like the game is actively punishing you for playing and caring about previous games in the series.
Supplemental media is bought because the main product has earned your investment, love, or interest. Not everyone has the income available to buy it with their own money - especially if you live outside the US and have to pay additional shipping costs. Not everyone has the ability to buy or 'obtain' the digital versions either. My understanding of the main story of a video game in a video game series should not require additional monetary investment into other mediums.
The game itself should be enough and DATV is not enough.

Some more Wish 2 Concepts!

Really love the idea of Asha’s magic being able to manifest with more control once she starts channeling her art skills into it. Like she struggles before, but once she starts drawing (pun intended) on her natural she starts bringing all sorts of amazing things to life to help aid her. A living representative of the magic of animators.
For Star I would bring back the shapeshifter idea for him while they’re in the Land of Dreams, he can take the form of different dreams he interacts with, as Wishes and Dreams are so connected.
And of course I had to do a little doodle of the moment Magnifico and Maroula first both realize the other is here in the Dreamlands, and that they’re on opposite sides of the conflict.
Tumblr media
Magnifico in his quest for vengeance has unknowingly aligned himself with his estranged daughter’s greatest enemy, and Maroula’s first site of her father after almost 100 years is seeing him ruthlessly attack her new friends—and aiding the dream eating Lamia.
