alcohol was running steadily through his veins, an unfortunate consequence of the ridiculous amount of whiskey that had found its way onto the pit of nate's stomach again and again that evening. they should have just gone out for a beer, an excuse to visit the bar downtown and relieve all the memories ashton's absence had left behind, but one drink had let to another and the two had to call themselves an uber to get home saftely. the ride home had been quiet, a faint tension humming between them like the low bassline of the car's radio. he was strangely aware of how ashton's thigh pressed against his, a casual touch that seemed to burn straight to him, no matter how often or innocent it was.

they were finally back home, his back resting against the kitchen counter as he drank a much needed glass of water. the other male was standing beside him, just a little too close. his pulse thudded in his ears, drowning out the quiet clink of his glass as he set it down on the hard surface. he's about to say something, but then ashton leaned in. nate felt the shift before he saw it, the air between them thinning until his best friend's breath ghosted against his skin, just below his ear. his body tensed on instinct, a sharp inhale betraying the steady composure he’d been trying to hold onto.

the whispered words were low, and there was nothing friendly about them. had he heard him right ? he turned his head slightly, just enough to catch ashton's expression from the corner of his eye. ashton was clearly just as drunk as he was, there was no way he meant it. not like that. still, his breath hitched, heart hammering against his ribs as if it was urging him to say something, do something.

but he doesn't. can't. because doing something about it would mean acknowledging it. admitting that this wasn’t just a drunken slip of the tongue. doing something about it would mean admitting to himself that this tension, this undercurrent that had been pulling at them for years, wasn’t one-sided. it would mean letting go of the fragile boundary they’d both pretended not to see, the one that kept them safe, kept them friends, and kept nathaniel from losing himself in something he didn’t think he could ever come back from.

We're happy to see Y/N looking so happy following the revelation that her ex-boyfriend, and Carlos' current F1 teammate, had cheated on her.
