The hyperfixation demons are screeching at me to write a comprehensive list of all the reasons I like Fukutora, so today I present to you "Ant ignores their responsibilites and spends several paragraphs explaining why Fukutora is peak despite them having roughly 10 seconds of shared screen time"

1. Contrasting Personalities In general their personalities fit together really well— Fukunaga barely speaks while Tora exclusively shouts at max volume and can't stfu to save his life, Tora's overly-intense and takes everything way too seriously while Fukunaga's cracking jokes in the middle of important games, they're even literal opposites on the court as the two wing spikers. Their differences compliment each other perfectly and because of that I think they'd grow a lot being together, Fukunaga would learn to open up and Tora would mellow out. Another good contrast is how Tora's all about looking cool and standing out while Fukunaga tends to blend into the background, which leads into my next point...

2. MY ROMAN EMPIRE (aka chapter 309) I know it's only two pages out of a 33 chapter match but i dont care, this scene makes me feral. I read the manga after watching Dumpster Battle, so imagine my suprise when my two favorite losers had a moment THAT GOT CUT FROM THE FUCJIGN MOVIE (I'm still salty, it should've been a full season).

Anyways these pages rooted their way into my brain because they show that even though Fukunaga goes unnoticed by most people (both in-universe and by readers) Tora realizes how great he is, and not only respects his play style but views him as a rival on the same level as himself. One thing I appreciate about Tora is that despite him being the stereotypical "strong manly athlete" type he doesn't think his methods are the best or only way of doing things; Fukunaga scoring points without "big fanfare" is just as cool as the shit he and Tanaka pull off. The phrasing "that I hafta surpass" could even imply that Tora sees Fukunaga as more than an equal, as someone who's ahead of him since he doesn't need to be flashy or loud to do amazing stuff.

Look at his smile on page two, bro's just excited to have someone who motivates him to keep pushing himself. And as we've learned from Kagehina: what's gayer than a rivalry?? All in all I think it's sweet that Tora notcies his efforts and admires him when few others do. Side Note, I've seen a translation of these that call them "Nekoma's Wings" and I think that's a sick nickname.

3. Bi Tora and Internalized Homophobia I love a good internalized homophobia arc, and characters like Tora that center so much around girls and manliness are some of the most fun to explore them with imo. You could say he's one of the least likely characters in hq to be queer since he's THE woman-lover next to Tanaka and Noya (and Yachi) but that's what makes it interesting—his gay awakening would hit like a tsunami and send him into life-ruining bi panic for months, especially since he's already such a mess when it comes to romance. He gives me the vibes of someone who has no problem with other people being gay but struggles when it comes to himself since it clashes with his conception of what it means to "be a man" or whatever. My point is he'd have the most intense no homo phase to grace this earth and I think that's both super funny and compelling for his character.

Also as a bi person myself it's kind of frustrating how bisexuality is treated online sometimes. It's annoying when a person's queerness is negated the moment they show attraction for the opposite gender, so headcanoning a character like Tora as a bi while still being openly into women makes me happy.

4. The Stage Play They're so silly in the stageplay. Why is he dragging him around by the feet? Why are they screaming at Kenma? Why is he constantly bopping him on the head in the background? WHY IS HE SERVING FACE IN THE PROMO PICTURES? So silly.

(Ignore how blurry these are lol) 5. Ant's Little Sister Bias This is a me thing, I like ships where one party has an annoying little sister who bothers them, sue me. Its cute. Akane and Fukunaga could have the most adorable friendship if you believe.

6. They Match Each Others Energy My first post about them was me rambling about this so just read that, TDLR they're both energetic menaces who match each other's freak.

7. Kenma's Forced Third-Wheel Purgatory Putting Kenma in a situation where Kuroo's graduated and his closest remaining friends are dating and constantly forcing him to third-wheel is just about the evilest thing you could do to the guy. He may be one of my favorites but this is well-deserved punishment for his crimes.

8. Baffled x Baffling Another ship dynamic I like a lot is when one person is unabashedly weird and the other thinks they're a total freak... but likes them anyways. They don't know why they like them. They can't explain it to anyone. Whenever the person does more weird shit they're like "why tf do I like you." But even so they're whipped as hell. Anyways Tora barely understands a single thing Fukunaga does and I think that makes for a funny crush to have.

9. Fukunaga's "Current Concern" Don't have much to add here, it's just proof to me that they hang out idc. Like why are you concerned about what he wants?? Kinda gay dude. Big fan of Fukunaga whispering to him and Tora answering at full volume so other people hear a one-sided conversation.

10. These Fics Before I knew this ship was even a thing I stumbled on these fics while browsing the Fukunaga tag, that's what got the gears turning:

• My favorite one, third-year shenanigans • Peak, need to be signed in tho • College AU • This one is mostly gen Fukunaga but the few moments they have are perfect (also really fun Nekoma interactions overall)

11. Other Miscellaneous Thoughts • Both of them being public figures/lowkey famous in timeskip is cute, like imagine them being each others' biggest fan before they make it big.

• Chef x guy who eats a lot is peak fiction. In this case they both eat a lot. Their grocery bill is a horror story.

• I know it's because characters are usually grouped by year and Kenma ditches them to sit with Kuroo but they're always together in the stands, pretty gay if you ask me

• I hc Fukunaga as genderfluid so Tora still gets his chance to be a wife guy. Him and Tanaka ranting to each other while Kiyoko and Fukunaga drink tea in peaceful silence.

• I think Fukunaga's the type to enjoy people watching and Tora's always doing something dumb. Observing him like a little bug under a microscope

• They're both so silly looking, cartoony ahh designs. I just think they'd make a funny couple visually, they're so square and stick to me if that makes any sense lmaoo

5) what kind of art is your favorite to create?

i LOVE writing time travel fics. i think i have a pretty good formula down and i just love how mind-fucky it is bc as a concept it doesnt rlly make complete sense (how could it?) which also means that the rules are pretty easy to manipulate. for crochet, i LOVE tapestry crochet and i have a real soft spot for making room decor. also this doesn't completely count bc im no professional but i love taking candid pics. if im at a function and you see me with my phone out chances are im not giving u time to adjust yourself and pose (at least at first)

10) if you had a fuckton of money, what are you splurging on?

i do have a list of things i'd splurge on haha and some of it includes literally anything from teuta and lirikia matoshi, pink heart bag from Twin Stiched, and a trip to universal studios. also horror nights at knotts berry farm. and disneyland (sorry for being a disney adult...)

13) if you could be in any show(s)/movie(s), what would they be?

the first season of total drama island. everything is still relatively grounded there so i'd wanna see how far i'd get and what archetype i'd be. also totally killer could be fun only bc i know how it ends (happily) + i wanna time travel so bad. the only trade off would be that i would be in the 80s but its only temporary (me acting like i would have a horrible time in the 80s when im literally white passing lmaooo sorry. i just couldnt have a lovey dovey sapphic love story but again. only temporary. also i wouldnt wanna have a love story in the 80s that would so fuck with the timeline) (actually.. that would fuck w the timeline. and i lowkey love fucking w things)

I wanted to start out and say thanks for sending these questions. Answers are under a cut.

Which of your fics is your pride and joy?

I guess Backtrack is the oldest one, and I’m extremely proud of myself for sticking with it. I still fully intend to update it, but I’ve put a lot of time into it (and other stories). 

It’s funny I should even mention my Emma/Jay story Together Forever got me through the early days of the pandemic. It would be a close second, and lately, I’ve been writing a lot for Where Are You Now?  older idea for a story that I reworked starting last year. 

I feel so much for Backtrack because it was also my most challenging and the one that got me back into fanfiction after a few years. Around the same time, I was writing a discontinued story, The Starlet and the Dealer, about Zig and Maya circa season 13 but it’s soapy and I have no desire to revisit it. I’d probably end up throwing Zig and Maya who had a complicated dynamic throughout this story endgame, but it’d be a disservice to the story and it doesn’t matter because of the direction the show went into it was unfair to Zoe’s character even though it’s a fic. Does that make sense?

What’s something you learned while researching a fic?

I do some research, but I do apply a lot of random things from movie quotes, pop culture references, and things I find interesting into stories. 

I guess I researched alcoholism for one of my earlier works I Have Nothing. I remember when I was in school I read a young adult short story in English class back in hs about being a ‘closet drunk’ and I kind of wrote it and threw some things together and some of the things I read about. 

The story is set in season 3 when Emma had quite a bit on her plate from Snake’s cancer to a fallout with her best friend and more importantly, when she loses Sean. Isolated she forges a new friendship with Amy who leads a complicated and tumultuous home life. Sean becomes increasingly worried about her and more and more drawn to her as the story starts. It’s something the show at the time I was writing it didn’t explore until Fiona. 

I also did some research on fake dating for Faking It. I gave it rom-com vibes, it’s one of the more lighthearted things I’ve written with less traumatic events I suppose. 

What is your favorite line/section from [Backtrack]?

I like how Sean and Emma re-meet all over again, so they catch up with one another over coffee and Sean declares why he’s returned and it’s a bit predictable, and then they decide to take a walk in the park and eventually they end up at Emma’s, so I like writing beginnings and it turned into a longfic which it wasn’t meant to be that long. 

Is there a character or ship you’d love to write for, but haven’t yet?

I haven’t written anything about other shows but Degrassi. I’d like to perhaps play in other universes in the future, such as Stranger Things. 

First person to come to mind is Spinner he’s never really a centralized character. He’s either the waiter and tied to The Dot, or I’m breaking him and Emma up. I’ve never written anything centric to him. I guess I tried to expand him more in Backtrack but he’s definitely not a main character. 

As for girlies, Liberty is rarely in my stories, if she is she isn’t centralized she is tied to Manny, and where it works for me/the story, sometimes she’s more friendly, or her loyalties are tied to Manny than to Emma a character I write most about. 

I had Liberty make little cameos in a few stories, like reunion one-shots. I do have ideas for something like that where she is reunited with the child she put up for adoption with JT and grappling with that stuff. I don’t know if I could work with it or whatever, maybe someday. 

Does anyone you know in real life know you write fanfiction?

My boyfriend knows I sometimes talk about them with him. He seems to be supportive. 

How many WIPs do you have and how many do you expect to finish?

I suck. Here is a list. I do expect to finish most of them? I kind of fell out of love with I Have Nothing and Summer Days so I don't know, I kinda need motivation for them.

Podcasts I Adore - Within the Wires, Season Seven: Scavenger Hunt

I’m going to send you on a trip. Lots of trips, actually. You don’t have to take them all at once, but don’t leave too long between them. Let’s call it a scavenger hunt. You’ve been so busy at work. Lots of late hours. Use up some government travel vouchers. It’ll be fun.

Gosh. Never since season four of Within the Wires was it so hard for me to fight the urge to scream at a protagonist while listening to them. And Elena Jiménez, the current protagonist, made me feel even more uncomfortable than terrible, terrible Freya Brigettesdotter. Because this time, I can't even hate her.

I don't like Elena Jiménez. She gives me stalker vibes. She sends a person around the globe, tells her old stories of a mother that this person is not allowed to know anything about, and then she rambles on, about a lot of other things as well. Like, how exactly sex and dancing are the same. You know, that kind of stuff that you really don't want to hear from someone who obviously snooped into your private life before. Elena Jiménez is red flags all along. But she says she does it all for love. Because she grieves the love of her life. And I belief her. I believe that grief does this to people. I even think Elena is a well-written character. It just doesn't make things better.

At least we learn quite a few things about quite a few places in the alternate universe of Within the Wires, as Elena sends the daughter of who once was the love of her life all around the globe, to tell her more about this mother. This scavenger hunt is the most fun part of the season, and once more Within the Wires just excels at finding a new type of found audio medium through which to tell its story. And even more than in the previous seasons, it's absolutely exciting to speculate if the tapes have ever been heard by their intended audience. Because Elena records them with the purpose of hiding them for one specific person, not knowing if said person indeed even started her journey. Unfortunately, they authors decide to not keep this suspense up for all of the season, but still. This is my personal highlight in a season that otherwise did not really strike a chord with me.

Production wise there's nothing to complain. Acting, soundtrack and the way the episodes are narrated are as flawless as one has grown accustomed to after seven years of Within the Wires goodness. It's just a season not to my personal taste. 7 out of 10 points.

I keep thinking how she must've felt so safe when being on GA and S19. And now that it's over the feeling must be uneasy for her.

The world is cruel I tell you. S19 should have at least been on until season 10. She had so much more to say through Carina and the love story of Marina.

Maybe by some luck in the world there will be a network that will pick up S19 and revive it. It happened with Criminal Minds. Maybe it can happen here too... for our baby angel Spampi.

She definitely deserves all good things! I'm really hoping her being in LA right now is a good sign because usually she's not in LA unless she has to be 😂 fingers crossed we'll hear she's doing some kind of project soon 🤞🏻

Since these are long, I’m going to answer this in three parts!

Fandom

The moment in the story that I started shipping my OTP from this world?

Well, my OTP is definitely Klena, and I think I started shipping them in episode 11 of season 2. Elena goes to Slater’s apartment to send that message to Klaus - the doppelgänger is alive and ready to surrender. And 14 year old me was immediately like 😍🤭👀. After that, Klaus asking Elena to save a dance for him and all was just….loaded.

Like, even before they met, there were these vibes and I was just in love with them. The way he holds her at the sacrifice, their chemistry during the prank night episode, it definitely got to me. They’ve been waxing and waning in my mind since then.

My three favorite characters and why I love them so much.

The first is, of course, Elena. That very first scene in the cemetery where she’s writing in her diary had me hooked. I was so intrigued by her loneliness and her depression, someone I could identify with, who was so internalised. I’d always felt weird about being an introvert, and Elena was one of the first characters that I identified with. Now, after a decade, I can also identify with her grief, and it’s just that much more personal to me.

The second is Klaus. When he first came on the show, I wasn’t sure what to make of him. I def found him attractive 😅 but I thought there was more to him that I needed to see. I thought, multiple times “what an asshole”, but I could also recognise his loneliness and his fear of being abandoned, and they just resonated with me. By s4 of TVD, I was already in love with him, and followed him onto TO. (That was for Elijah too 🤭)

And third, I think, is Cami. I loved Cami, I saw her as this girl trapped in darkness, and trying to find her way out, until eventually she didn’t want to find a way out anymore. It was nice to see someone who was somewhat ordinary getting trapped between these vampires. The beginning of her relationship with Klaus is so fascinating to me, like she obviously sees him as a tortured soul, while he is actively hurting her through his mind control. But she fights back, and she’s tenacious, she’s probably one of the few people who fights against Klaus’ compulsion and then gets out of it. Refuses to play by his games but also plays him sometimes to get what she wants. Her struggle with vampirism was so, so real, and both her deaths were the saddest I’ve seen in that universe.

Which scene I would like to erase from the universe and why.

Ugh, the entire torture episode. Where Damon and Stefan (the saviours 🙄) both torture Elena to turn her humanity back on. Get Katherine to help too, just disgusting. That episode shows just how much internalised misogyny some of the show runners themselves held.

Which character I would choose for the chopping block if I knew the writers wanted to kill someone?

Probably Matt. Like, I like him well enough, but after a certain point, what does he even bring to the table?

The world-building aspect of the story I have the greatest admiration for.

The Originals for sure! I absolutely love s3 of TVD but s2 is so fucking good. The build up is amazing, first we’re introduced to Isobel, then that Katherine entry (like damn), just when we think she’s the baddest, Elijah shows up and scares the fuck out of Katherine.

And then, this intense build up to Klaus and sun and moon curse, only for us to learn that it was all fake, and to know about the real curse. It’s just…. Brilliant storytelling. Like yes, there are loopholes, and it’s the CW, but it’s just so well paced. I’ll be honest though, once the originals show up, it feels like we go into a different level. So much of the credit for that goes to Daniel and then Joseph, they were both brilliant, and they brought something unique to their roles that made us want to see them more. They elevated every scene they were in and Paul, Nina and Kat were the only ones who could keep up imo, at least in terms of screen presence.

The perfect number of books/seasons/movies needed to tell this story properly.

I think 4-5 seasons were more than enough. I’m not a fan post s4 (and s4 hangs on by a thread).

Hello, I'd like to ask you about Doctor Who, for the send me a series asks, if I may?

Wheeee thanks! Disclaimer - I’ll be talking about NuWho here cause I haven’t watched that much Classic Who.

Favorite character: Tenth Doctor!!! Sexy specs and Converse, great hair, a great coat, and wonderful grins. God I love him so much. He’s so silly. And he cares soooo much.

Second favorite character: Ninth Doctor. He’s fantastic 💗

Least favorite character: Clara Oswald. Sorry not sorry but I genuinely hate how she’s written.

Character I’m most like: with such a rich cast it’s hard to pick but maybe a mix of Donna and Rory? With some Wilf thrown in for good measure.

Favorite pairing: Ten x Rose. The ultimate power couple. Doomsday still makes me sob okay. Close second is Nine/Jack/Rose cause their TARDIS vibe was just everything to me.

Least favorite pairing: River x Doctor. She’s just too Moffatty. Too much Irene Adler “women have to be dominatrixes to be strong/worthwhile” vibes. Idk.

Favorite moment: argh there’s just too many!! for nine, the “everybody lives Rose! just this once, everybody lives!!” god the impact that had, especially given his time war ptsd storyline 😭😭 for ten, that scene with him and Donna after he drinks cyanide lives rent free in my head 😂

Rating out of 10: 7.2. Listen this one is hard because it’s such a long running show and there have been sooo many show-runners and doctors and companions. for me the problem is I loved loved LOVED RTD’s era. Yes near the end the “lonely doctor” theme got a bit annoying but whatever. I was excited for Moffat but he slowly ran the show into the ground by solving plot holes with time paradoxes and universe reboots. Laazzyyy writing imo. I got excited again with 13’s announcement and Chibnall taking over but…yeah, while Jodie was AMAZING, the show kinda ran into the same kind of issues as Moffat for me. So while I enjoyed individual characters/episodes…as a show it’s hard to give it a higher rating because of how certain eras have made me lose interest entirely. Allll that being said, seasons 1-4 have some of my all time favorite moments and characters in them of any show, ever, so I cannot TELL YOU how fucking excited I am for RTD (and David and Catherine) to be coming back and for Ncuti to make his mark!!

I actually dreamt about it last night weirdly enough. I don't know about twilight being based off of an mcr fic, but fifty shades of gray was based off of a twilight fic! That would be crazy if it was a story based off of a fic based off of a story based off of a fic (based off of a band that started because of 9/11 (dominoes of 9/11 to fifty shades of gray)). That's cool that they listened to the fans 🧡. It makes it feel kind of collaborative. And boy howdy do I love me some collaborative fiction! It reminds me of greek (and other) mythologies, where everybody has their own take on each story, and what it means to them, and which characters they like. Kinda like fanfiction and fandom in general :). In my opinion, that's the natural way that humans tell stories. Collaboratively and derivatively. Copyright is a very unnatural thing to me.

Yeah, I've been experimenting around with just letting my plants be more natural :). Of course, some of the edible ones are more domesticated, so they need some unnatural maintenance. But, I still like seeing how they naturally grow if I let them. I tried cold brewing some tea for my plants the other day ☕. It's supposed to leech tannins into the water, which can be nutritious for plants. Of course, it's also slightly acidic, so I only used it on the plants that like or tolerate slightly acidic soil. I'm sort of trying to create my own black water, which is a more natural, nutritious pond water that fish hobbyists sometimes use in their tanks. I hope it helps my plants grow bushier, healthier foliage :). They're looking sparse right now. I think the creeping saxifrage is already loving it! 🪴👍

Which tf character is your favorite in terms of personality?

Well obviously there's my man Store Bought Ice Cream. He varies so much across every continuity and yet I love each and every one of them. From devious scheming gremlin to noble warrior who needs a hug to fucked up guy who commits various atrocities. The bot's got range! He is such star much screaming <3

Bayverse Crosshairs is also fun. While I do like bayverse to an extent, it is a very immense compliment to say a character has a definitive personality in that universe lmaoo. But yeah Crosshairs there is so fun, I love his morally dubious nature and constantly having to be kept an eye on. Not to mention he's just an overall badass. Him, Hound, and Drift almost tricked me into rewatching TLK ahjsdk

Beast Wars and Armada Megatron are also very very fun! Yesss, their suaveness is so funny and I love how simultaneously badass and hilarious they can be. Beast Wars Megan is so dramatic, I'm still losing it over him wearing a wholeass judge wig just to decide if he should kill a traitor or not ahsjdkfg.

Armada Megan is also incredibly fun and is actually my favorite meg so far. He's got THE BEST design of all the megans and this weird complexity you wouldnt expect from first glances. It’s not that I don’t think ROP has any faults (lmao) it’s that I see through this bullshit because they’re not mentioning any of the actual faults the show has, they’re just harping on stuff that’s made up or spun totally out of context or stuff we’ve collectively forgiven other adaptions for.

I think it’s weirdly paced. I think 8 episodes is directly contributing to the weird pacing and I think so is the hour length. I think it would be significantly improved by being either twice as many episodes with half as long of a runtime OR keeping the hour length but extending the season to 10-12 episodes to allow for some pacing fixes. Right now we’re kind of just hopping from plot point to plot point and it’s because there’s not enough time to tell some aspects of the story and way too much time spent on others. When did we stop doing 20-28 30 minute episodes? I feel like leaving that framing behind was a mistake- we see this in Netflix’s Castlevania which almost immediately abandoned the very minimal episodes per season when they realized they needed way more time to tell the story they wanted to.

Some of the direction of the narrative is just odd. I’m not really talking about lore changes (all adaptions change lore get over it ffs) but more how characters tie together. Gil-galad is younger than Galadriel and she does not need to ask him for permission to sail to Valinor as that’s not really his to give. There’s a lot of talk of “the gods” but Tolkien being a good little Catholic boy was extremely clear that the Valar are not gods even if the race of Men sometimes believes them to be and it just sounds jarring when placed in this universe. Why would an elf that loved smithing send someone else to talk to the dwarves, a race that was literally formed by the very smith said elf loves so much? Why hasn’t Galadriel spoken about her long lost husband until now? These are weird narrative choices and I’ve been waiting to point them out until we get answers, and being that this is clearly intent on taking its time to tell the full story we may not get answers to these weird choices this season or even next.

My biggest critique probably is that it feels more Witcher than LOTR- but not Netflix Witcher. Like, the vibe I get from the ROP show is the same as I get from the Witcher books. This isn’t a bad thing per say as I do like the Witcher books quite a lot and am slowly but steadily working through them. But it’s only the last couple episodes that made me feel like I was in Tolkien’s universe, not Sapkowski’s. This is actually a tie-in to another problem which is that a lot of people complaining say it feels like a rip-off of GOT, but I actually feel that the Netflix Witcher is leaning too hard on GOT tropes, while ROP is leaning too hard on Witcher [books] tropes. Really only with Udun and The Eye did I start feeling like I was actually within something plausible in Tolkien’s writing, which I hope the series continues on this trajectory because I think that’s a good uphill swing.

I’m VERY excited to announce a big, big project I have been working on for months (last March/July, go figure!)

A Normal Life is a story that includes a fic, for which more than a thousand pages had been already written; plus several pieces of art including chapter illustrations and concept art. With the help of my beloved Team Cavota server, I have been refining the concept and working hard on creating a unique experience. Though I have done projects before that were pure love children (Lonely Together comes to mind the most), ANL will elevate the stakes in terms of plot and the intrinsic mystery is building. I hope whatever decides to read it funds it interesting.

This cover has been carefully crafted, and is full of details and references I hope you can speculate about. Anything interesting you catch, I’ll be very excited to hear!
