Round Robin Chapter 2

Krista Rodriguez glanced at the speaker in front of her. This was her chance to get back into good graces with her family and the press. For three years she had been dealing with a PR nightmare that began when her older brother Damien Rodriguez stayed in Mexico and sent her to America. Everyone was wondering what that would mean for her family once news got around. As the only member of the family who knew where he was she was assigned to bring him back to her family who at the moment were in Spain. With the tensions rising between surrounding countries her feelings began to shift and so her grandmother sent her here. Bringing her attention back to the situation at hand she tuned in to hear them all being dismissed. 

“Miss. Rodriguez, I’m Natalia Karanova. I've been assigned as your personal assistant and bodyguard while you are here.” The young woman greeted.

“My grandmother mentioned you briefly. As long as you are loyal to me and me only we won't have any problems.” Krista replied, “ Now we need to get some rest and I have to call Andrei. He's already here.”

“Your fiance right?” Natalia asked,

“Yes Natalia, my fiance. You did your homework right? Now I’m going to talk with the love of my life so we can figure out how to solve the mess of PR that my brother made, and you are going to learn everything you can about the shady dealings my family has been doing behind my back.”

Natalia nodded and left the room while Krista got Andrei on the phone. 

“Hola Mi Amor, how are you holding up so far?”

“I’m good I guess. I don’t know- I just thought that things would have been better by now. Damien is still in Mexico building the case against our parents. Andrei if we can't get my younger siblings out of that house soon they're going to be hurt worse than I ever was.” Krista finally let her deepest fear be spoken.

“We will get them out, you have to believe it.” Andrei reassured, “Speaking of you, where are you?” Andrei asked,

“I’m in the Alpha 3 conference room that is connected to my apartment in the building. What do you think about this whole PR thing?” Krista answered, three seconds later Andrei hung up and Krista heard a knock at the door. She opened it to the tall form of Andrei looking back at her.

“Next time let me know where you are at the beginning so we can have our conversations face to face.” He glanced at her outfit taking in her slightly disheveled appearance. Her hair looked as if she had been running her hand through it all evening long,and her eyes were still glistening from crying. “When was it Krista Elaine?” Andrei asked, referencing the panic attack he knew she had from the way her breathing was still ragged.

“It was right before I called you. I was stressed out from the meeting and all the other stuff.” Krista replied, staring at the ground. Andrei ever so gently lifted her chin to look at him.

“Ele It’s ok I’m not your parents and I’m not mad at you. You’ve had a lot going on and I just want to make sure you're ok. Now I’m going to suggest that we take our official records to Beaumont tomorrow to let him know that we're already married, so that he doesn't have to send his dogs out to find that information. We don’t need him getting the wrong idea.” 

Krista nodded and they both returned to their own rooms for bed.

2.2 "“The devil is in this place.” people would whisper."

It looked so innocuous, not something to be noticed on the street. Tall as it was, Elysium apartments was otherwise utterly unremarkable. Yet, people would walk just a little bit faster, their eyes fixated on the cracked pavement that suddenly seemed a little more overgrown than the rest of the street. Like the towering oak doors were waiting to consume them whole. Like the windows were ceaseless eyes that stared right into, right through, right within. A place that had stood whilst the ground changed, the grass burned, regrew. The buildings surrounding it fell, demolished, rebuilt, and still it stood. Looming with its deep red bricks, hardened and unmoved by the world around it, Elysium stood. There were whispers once, twice, many times over the century it had stood. Beneath the oak and brick and mortar and blood of the craftsmen that sculpted that place, the devil sat holding its roots as if to drag it down to hell itself. The devil is in this place, they would whisper. And only when Elysium falls, will he be free.

You should have told me.” A - And, since I’m already here being a shit to him, I lift my eyebrows and intone dramatically, “At least, not yet.” I - It’s not a matter of desire. It’s that you can’t leave. L - Living under his grandfather's thumb had worn him down so that tiny cracks glared up from beneath the veneer of the perfect child he pretended to be. U - ugh my desire to see you again vs my desire to not have whatever conversation you want to have sober: FIGHT R - Remember: Information does not always mean freedom. E - Except they’re also being silent with each other not just with me which means they’re fighting which means that I shouldn’t care (because like, fuck her I guess), but I do.

What annoys you to an irrational degree?

at the moment, not a lot. for what it's worth, I don't tend to get annoyed that easily. But, if we're talking irrational, then I guess my answer is the superstitions around the forests. People like to claim that they're so dangerous just because they're that unknowable, but i spend a lot of time out there, and they're absolutely not worth the slander...

Can i trust you to look after my houseplants while I'm on holiday?

you could, but that would be best left to Sienna... I've never tried my hand at plants before, and that's literally her specialty. But, saying that, i'd at least take good care of the plants you have!

What was the last thing that caused you to have a really bad day?

huh. Y'know, uh... I don't really remember all that well. I think it might've had something to do with the fact I heard Hunter was back in town, that guy is not good news, and I gotta keep my head down now. Last thing I want is another... Confrontation.
