I have this headcanon... James used to run through the Forbidden Forest with the same little black cat every year. The little cat would join the four of them, running, playing, chasing each other. The others got along with the cat, but James and the critter had a special bond. The first time wasn't long after they completed the animagus spell, and James came across the cat after getting seperated from the others. The minute they touched noses, he felt strangely changed. And from then on, he would always look for the little kitty, always relishing in their time together.

Then in James' seventh year, it was the first full moon and James was waiting while Padfoot, and wormtail took off with Moony. But the black cat never came. Moon after moon, the cat never showed. James never confirmed, but it was only after he noticed Regulus never showed up back to school, that he started to wonder.

After the thought felt like it was consuming him, he sent a letter. And another, and another. But never heard back, and it was six months later that he heard that Regulus had passed. He never did find out if it really was him, but in the years that followed, he would dream about those nights spent in the woods. It felt like the forbidden forest, but it didn't look like it. Instead of trees, they ran together among the stars.

A dream that continued even after James left this world. A dream that proved not to be a dream at all.
