Horsey has installed himself on the chair closest to the fire; George hesitates a moment, then settles on the rug beside it, legs splayed out before him, so he can better scratch under his chin. 

“We’ll have to send you home with a litter after your next visit,” he jokes, but his breath catches a little when George looks delighted at the prospect. He’d forgotten, in all these months, what it was like to bring someone simple joys. He’s the source of too many “no”s of late. But even when the estate is low on rents and crops and capital, it never lacks for kittens in the spring. 

“Are you onto Chesapeake after us, or Norwich?” he asks. 

“Chesapeake for at least two weeks, perhaps a month. Cara’s shut up the Norwich house, but I can’t imagine Benjy will want us underfoot for that long. I’m sure he’d much rather have solitude with his wife.” There’s a wistfulness to the way George speaks that makes Alex’s mouth twist in sympathy. The oldest of a crop of siblings so close they could almost exchange places without their mother noticing, Alex has never quite grasped the strange, stilted way George loves his older brother and sister. 

He is tempted, naturally, to blame it on the money, but that’s his own lack of funds colouring the picture. George’s fortune, inherited from a mercantile uncle who’d taken his brother’s unexpected second son as an heir, certainly had altered the trajectory of the Russell family from decent sailors to almost gentry. But there are subtler tensions that Alex had almost blundered into on his last visit, three years ago, still too much a boy to pick through the nuances of respect and rank when there were no titles to guide the way. 

He doesn’t want to visit George at Chesapeake. He wants George here, relaxed and happy, soft fur against his fingertips. 

“Cara wants me to find a place of my own, now that I can access the capital. Apparently it would be more fitting. Sometimes I think she forgets I grew up in the dockyards as much as she did.” There was, of course, a difference between a captain’s daughter and an admiral’s son, but Alex kept the thought stowed. “I’m sure being mistress of a grand estate is only part of the appeal.” 

“Ah, she’s being savvy with the timing. You’ll have your pick of the bunch, I’d wager. Almost everyone is letting or selling something.” At George’s blank look, he elaborates. “The harvest last year was dire, George, up and down the country. I have the best steward in England and I’m haemorrhaging rents. Those that have funds to fall back on can weather perhaps another year or two like it, but those on thinner purses, or dud speculations? They’ll sell what they can to keep the rest afloat.” 

He’s come too close to the truth of his own situation that to not go on feels almost like a lie. He takes a sip of brandy to stiffen up the sinews. It’s strange, when they’d been boys it had been so easy to talk about money - George’s strange acquisition of it, Alex’s lax relationship with his own allowance. Two years of managing an estate in dire straits have made Alex cagey, nearly embarrassed. But George, of all people, deserves his candour. “I’d have sold the London house, if I could. Unfortunately, my hands are tied, so the best I can do is let it.”

“Is it that desperate? Alex, I could-”

“I hope you’re not going to be insulting, George,” Alex says sharply. “And no. It’s not desperate. Merely… close-run. In truth, there’s more riding on the horses than I would like. The two we took out today are our best shot at reviving the stud business. If one of them can take the Triple Crown, or the Stayers’-” 

George is looking vaguely quizzical, and Alex wonders exactly how he became best friends with a man who can barely tell the start line from the finish. “The 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, the Derby at Epsom and the St Leger at Doncaster are the Triple Crown. The Stayers are the longer Cups - the Gold at Ascot, Goodwood and the Doncaster Cup. Still with me?”

George frowns. “And these are… horse races? I’m not sure I quite follow, where do you put the crown, on the jockey or the horse?” He can’t quite hold the expression long enough to be convincing, his grin leaking out around the edges. 

“Oh go to the devil.”

As far up as the Susquehanna Valley in Pennsylvania, nothing typified working class life around the Chesapeake like a crab house. They weren’t these fancy fruits de mer places but shambling roadside taverns where they steamed spiced crabs by the trayful and served beer by the pitcher. Gunnings in the Baltimore area called Brooklyn was my absolute favorite. In my mind, I can smell the Old Bay seasoning just driving up through DC to the outskirts of Philadelphia (where I have some people) even if most of those places are gone. For crabbers, it’s much smarter to sell one’s catch to those who are willing to pay a lot for it and to use that money to keep the family warm.

Benjamin Murdoch's life after the war [Part 3]

Coming into the 1810s

Benjamin petitions the House of Delegates about his military service. This is discussed later in this section.

In 1810, a man named C[harles?] Murdock was living in Frederick, Maryland with seven enslaved people. A W[illiam?] Murdock in living the same location with two enslaved people. It is not known if either of these men is related to Benjamin. There are also two tracts called Murdoch's Mount Resurvey but it is not known if this is his tract or not. There, is, however, strong evidence, once again, that he was living in Frederick county.

In June 1811, Benjamin was paid $3,120 by Allen and Sarah Farguhar (if I have that spelling right) for the resurveyed Hickory Plains tract which is still 454 acres. As readers may recall, he paid Abraham Plummer $2,000 for this tract back in 1803, eight years earlier. [11] While the relative value of the $2,000 he had paid had decreased to $1,490 due to inflation and other factors by 1811, he still had gained a $1,120 above from the original amount, and $1,630 above the amount adjusted to values that year. Hence, he garnered an almost 200% profit from this transactions, using the adjusted figure, so he was more than willing to sell the land to the Farguhars.

Three years later, in 1814, he was appointed as commissioner, along with Edward Owings, Jesse Wright, Samuel Hobbs, and Ed Brashears, to "assess the damages" to Nicholas Hall's land, which sat in Frederick County. The act specified the following aspects of this situation:

...[the] appointed commissioners...are hereby authorised and empowered to view and assess the damages if any, which in their judgment the said Nicholas Hull shall have sustained by the locating and making of a road through his lands...a road from near the old glass Works called New Bremen in Frederick county, to intersect the Baltimore and Frederick-Town turnpike road, at the town of New-Market in the said county, and...the said commissioners or a majority of them shall make out...a fair valuation of the damages

Nicholas was a man who was allowed by the Maryland General Assembly to raise money for a lottery for $2,000 dollars and noted that he owned land in New Market, Frederick County. Hence, it is possible that Benjamin knew this individual. It is also clear that this was not payment for "devaluation" of his land due to the British campaign in the military operations from 1812 to 1814 in the Chesapeake Bay but was rather a consequence of the changing nature of US society from an agrarian one to a more urban one, with "internal improvements." Benjamin's role as a commissioner could also imply that he was a Federalist since such individuals pushed forward this idea, and was later picked up by Henry Clay of the Whig Party.

A couple of years later, the Murdoch family gained additional land. More land was patented under the name of "Murdoch's Fancy" which was not unusual as land had been patented under the names of "Murdoch's Mountain Resurvey" and "Murdock's Inheritance" years later. There is no record that Benjamin was involved in any of these land agreements, although it is possible he was somehow tied in.

In 1817, Benjamin petitioned the Maryland General Assembly to be paid for his war service, and the legislature agreed with him. Hence, he was to be paid the half-pay of a lieutenant until his death:

"That the treasurer of the western shore be and he is hereby authorised and directed, to pay, annually, in quarterly payments, to Benjamin Murdock, a lieutenant in the Maryland line during the revolutionary war, the half pay of a lieutenant during life."

Almost a year later, Benjamin petitioned the Maryland House of Delegates over the same issue. His petition was reported favorably by Mr. Hawkins in the Maryland House of Delegates as the Maryland Gazette noted later that month.

And his petition related to his military payments as the journal of the House of Delegates makes abundantly clear:

It should be no surprise that it turns out that Mr. Hawkins, or Thomas Hawkins, was one of the four delegates representing Frederick County that year in the House of Delegates. The other delegates were Joshua Cockey, Thomas C. Worthington, and John H.M. Smith.

"Eating her is honoring her." I always laugh when I watch the open of this episode. They chose a doe so they could switch to one of Hobbs' victims. Abigail has a nightmare and wakes from her coma. First time I've seen Alana and Will alone together. A scene over coffee on the opposite side of Hannibal's breakfast. You can feel the difference. Hannibal is stalking Will, and very much wants to get in the middle of him and Jack.

Jack wants Will to see Abigail. Hannibal doesn't care one way or the other until Alana places doubt on her involvement. He wants to see if she's like them, to see how involved she can be. Double intent once he finds out Will is looking into Hobbs' copycat killer. It's just as much about self-preservation as wanting to know Abigail. When you listen to the portion of Will’s lecture about Hannibal's phone call to Hobbs, you can see his reason for calling Hannibal in 2x13. "How intimately did he know Garrett Jacob Hobbs?" That's why he tells Chiyoh he and Hannibal knew each other intimately. "Before Garrett Jacob Hobbs murdered his wife and attempted to do the same to his daughter, he received an untraceable call." When I saw how things played out in 2x13, I saw Will wanting Hannibal to kill Jack, while not expecting Alana to be there. If Will truly wanted Hannibal to leave, he wouldn't have taken a cab to his house. He was going there to run away with Hannibal, then saw Alana on the ground. "I believe the as-yet unidentified caller was our copycat killer." The lion copying the tiger.

Will describes Hannibal's crime scene as I see all of them. He elevates it to art. How they act in life plays a part in their crime scene display. He wants his audience to see his victims how he saw them. That's the difference between the Copycat killer and the Chesapeake Ripper. The Copycat killer is Will's admirer, so he kills with different intent. That's why it takes Will until season two to realize it’s one killer instead of two. I love the smile on Hannibal's face when Will profiles the Copycat killer calling Hobbs. Hannibal fell in love at first sight. In this scene, it reaches beyond that, and Will is oblivious to it. Hannibal didn't expect Will to be this good, but loves the fact that he is this good.

I'm bothered by Alana's conversation with Will over coffee. Abigail not having anyone doesn't mean Will wants to be her everyone. And he's not picking up a stray dog, he's reaching out to a child he feels he can connect with. This is the first time they show him reaching out to a fangless being. Alana should've started with her ending statement. Best Will not see Abigail, he killed her father right in front of her. Abigail is on the money with Alana's gift cards. More of this plays out during Francis' storyline, after Hannibal hands her a Verger heir. She doesn't need to redeem her gift cards because when she wants something, she simply buys it straight with cash. She went out and bought Abigail a new wardrobe when she could've easily went to her house and picked up some of her clothes. She's trying to buy Abigail's trust. I wouldn't be surprised if she struggles with credit card debt, she’s a spender.

There's a lot of focus to Will killing Abigail's father and how she views that. A nice confrontation between Will and Freddie. You can tell he doesn’t like her - at all.  Just as threatening, the way he approaches her as he threatens her. Will gets upset when he realizes Alana can no longer act as a buffer for him and Jack. Thank Hannibal for that. Hannibal plans to change that. I'll gif what I mean when I'm finished with this post. Hannibal now has three agendas. His mistake, biting off more than he can chew. He should've left Abigail alone and focused on Will. Difficult in his position, the need to know and prevent certain things because Abigail heard his voice on the phone. She knew he's the one who called. It ties into what Miriam said. She doesn't think the Chesapeake Ripper is white. She said he's exotic somehow. His Danish accent is unmistakable. 

Freddie's timing with Nicholas Boyle is impeccable. "We have no way of knowing what's waiting for her when she goes home." Alana gives Hannibal the idea to leave another Copycat victim in order to help close the case and end Will's investigation. It's the reason he questions Abigail about where her father makes his putty. It's where he plans to put his next victim. "It feels like I'm talking to his shadow suspended on dust." A great way to describe what it's like to be Hobbs. His shadow would be Will's shadow. "We should report this, yes?" Hannibal wants Will to report it so he can better sell Nicholas as Marissa's killer. Killing the girl who called her mother a bitch and framing the kid who went after Abigail. 

Will wakes in another sweat and pulls his shirt off. Hannibal knows how he connects, that's why he gave him field kabuki. "Garrett Jacob Hobbs would've honored every part of her." His comment is about Will, not about Hobbs. He would've honored every part of her too, and I love the way he looks at Hannibal when he says it. Will leans into him... "She said she didn't know them." He's looking for Hannibal's support. Hannibal objects to Jack's accusation that Will is being manipulated by Abigail. He loves Will's thought process, the last thing he wants is Will questioning it and doubting himself simply because he’s the one manipulating things. He offers Jack an alternate for Abigail, then takes notice to his exclusion of Will. Superiority shown in Jack's body language when he tells Will he wants him to stay. Like a master and his dog. One of many instances in this episode when Jack’s character pissed me off. 

Jack twice admits he lacks sympathy. This shows throughout the series. He feels no sympathy for Will even though he's hugely responsible. Alana thinks Abigail is hiding something. Yep, sounds like a teenager. Jack wants Will to see Abigail, then gets nasty with Alana when she tries to stop it. He speaks as if she cares to be Will's psychiatrist. She doesn't. She's trying to create a safe environment for Abigail. Jack doesn't care about Abigail, he only cares about his agenda. He treats Will like a child, as if his own voice needs to be controlled by Hannibal. Hannibal trusts Will to speak for himself, to which Jack tells him he shouldn’t. What does this scene tell me? Jack is the master, Will is the dog, Hannibal is the muzzle. This is Jack’s thinking. He then finishes it with overriding Alana’s opinion because it doesn’t suit his agenda, and going with Hannibal’s because it does. Top this off with the fact that Jack questions Will’s profile of the Copycat killer before they even find Marissa’s body. “I need to know if you're right about the copycat, Will.” Made worse when they find her body. Jack is an ass, and he stays that way through the entire series.

I think people sometimes underestimate when I say that crazy runs in my family, particularly the women on my mom's side. So I'm gonna make a list of specific instances that I know about.

My great-aunt Kathryn, who is one person I'm named after and also my former godmother, has been institutionalized several times for suicidal tendencies. She also suddenly dropped all communication without warning, to the point she wouldn't even acknowledge me the last time I saw her at a family member's funeral. Bear in mind, this is someone who previously would send large packages to my brother and I for literally every holiday and our birthdays.

I'm not sure which one, but one of my other great-aunts got her own mother, who is also the other source of my name, drugged up on pain medication and got her to sign away the deed to her house so she could sell it. My great-grandmother's only wish was to die in her own home, but instead she was passed around through several nursing homes, being abused and neglected in some of them, while her beautiful house on the shore of Chesapeake Bay was destroyed.

My great-aunt Juanita lives in an assisted living community, but honestly she really should be under 24-hour care. She doesn't bathe, preferring to mask the horrible stench with overpowering perfume that only makes her smell worse. She also got stuck on her toilet for three days before anyone came in to help her. The reason it took three days is because although she has one of the Life Alert pendant things, she never has it on her, but rather leaves it in her bedroom.

I honestly could write an essay about my grandmother, because she is one of the ones of whom I have the most knowledge/experience. Most relevant to my life is the fact that she is very prone to favoritism, and I’m not exactly one of her favorites. Besides myself, she has four other grandchildren: my older brother Jacob, my cousin Nicole (daughter of my aunt Dawn), and my cousins Sara and Cathleen (daughters of my uncle Chuck). I am the youngest among them. The only two that really ever got any kind of affectionate attention were the Jacob and Nicole, who are the two oldest. An example: one Christmas she gave both of them brand new tvs, while I got three pairs of socks. She’s criticized the way I look for as long as I can remember (particularly my hair, which she calls “stringy-looking”). One summer I spent part of my break from school at my grandparents’ house in Florida, and while I was there she took me to get a perm in my hair despite me being adamant I didn’t want it (I had had one previously and absolutely hated it). The last time I talked to her, she almost ruined my brother’s wedding for me because she made such an ass of herself about Steve sitting with me (and thus her) at the table reserved for Jacob’s family. My dad also ended up sitting at another table because she was complaining that he shouldn’t sit with us because he’s not technically related to Jacob (since we’re half-siblings). And the very first thing she said to me that day, before even saying hello, was to bitch about my young children making so much noise during the wedding. The best part of this is knowing the simple reason WHY she doesn’t like me: I’m an introvert. She has complained to my mother that I don’t call her just to talk or anything. And my mother even countered her by explaining that I don’t call anyone.

And my mother goes on this list too. We have a pretty complicated relationship, basically because she’s been emotionally abusive to me for my entire life. Growing up, nothing I did was ever good enough for her, to the point that I just stopped trying altogether, which came with the additional bonus of getting labeled as lazy. To this day I still have a weird complex about doing chores when people are around because of her, which usually results in me doing dishes and laundry at 3am on a regular basis since I can be pretty sure that everyone is asleep at that time. It also translated into schoolwork. When I got my first ever B in middle school, it was as if the world was ending. She also is a master of gaslighting and manipulation. Just a few weeks ago, she was making plans to go out on a Saturday, but I reminded her (as I had earlier in the week, as well as several other times) that both Steve and I had to work that night and needed her to watch the kids. She insisted that we had never said anything about it. She manipulated me into going to college not once, but three times. The first time was right out of high school (”You’ll never go if you don’t go now!”), then again the next semester (I had dropped all my classes due to a bad bout with depression, since I was basically directionless. “You’re on medication now and you should be able to manage yourself!”), and then again after I had taken a year off and was working (”If you don’t go back soon, you’ll never go back!”). For the most part, she knows that I’m the type of person that likes to please others, so she uses that against me whenever she wants something from me.

So yea, this is the kinds of issues that tend to run in my family. In particular, the dealing with my mother is part of why I always used to say I never wanted kids. Even now, one of my biggest fears is that I will turn out like any of these women.

Day 243

Woke up at like 1050 and just watched videos and chilled until 12. Left the house with my wii and ssbm and then went to the bank to withdraw $100. Then chesapeake to meet this guy on offerup. I bought a black backwards compatible wii finally with 2 wii motes and nunchucks, 5 games I didn’t care about, and all the cords and old wii sleeves and everything. Thought it was a pretty damn good deal with $100 considering they sell them at VGH for $130 so yeah. Speaking of VGH I went to the chesapeake after to see if they had wii motion plus remotes and they didn’t they did call the one near my house and held 2 for me and I called cool stuff beforehand and they also held one. So yeah the trip back to the VA Beach VGH happened and it ended up being them holding the wii motion plus accessory and not the actual wii mote that has it built in. Thankfully they had one in the case so I did all my trade ins + the games the guy gave me from offerup which ended up being like $95 in total. So yeah I used that towards the one and they put the rest on a gift card. Went to cool stuff and picked up the other one there. After, I went to Aldi and spent $51 on groceries and then Sam’s to pickup a couple more things. Spent like $27 there and ate just a hot dog and then got gas (waited in the gas line for like $15 it was SUPER fun lol.) After I went home and put everything away and tested the wii with the copy of SSBM I got from offerup awhile ago. Everything was working, although the copy of SSBM I have is not 1.01 :( but all good. I got home at like 315 so yeah I was just dilly dallying until around 5 when I did gym. Brandon and I did arms with 2 new workouts so that was cool. Went home, rinsed off and was on the computer just doing my thing until I made this frozen beef, broccoli and rice for dinner. It was pretty good and then yeah around 9 I started stream. I did a bit of unranked teams until BZimm was ready maybe 15ish minutes later and then we had a plan to do around the world unranked teams. I started with Roy and he started Doc and we actually completed it lmao. We actually didn’t lose a game until I was samus and he was zelda where we lost A LOT vs this fox and sheik who kept BMing us too lol. They finally left and Ian sniped us with a shitty partner so we finally got off. We lost a couple games with some other teams (tele ended up joining our call and sniping us too) but we did it. Afterwards, just played SoVA teams with us 3 and Ian until like 1230. I stopped stream and now here I am. It’s 117 and I kinda have a headache so i should sleep soon
