Hi!
I was wondering about your selkie lore? Mainly courtship stuff because I'm doing a little something and I'm collecting info from wherever it exists
Also you have no idea of how many times I've read your stuff, it makes me extremely happy and I have way too many tabs bookmarked to find them easily. You're amazing ( ◕◡◕)っ ♡
My personal selkie lore/headcanons? Sure! (for more information on 'traditional' selkie lore, I'd recommend checking out this page that I found when I went to Orkney. It also covers the Finfolk, who I want to write a story about as well...
Anyway, Ghosti's Personal Headcanons:
Courtship with humans is not encouraged by selkie communities on the whole. Traditionally, it doesn't tend to end well for the selkie.
If they do decide to go ahead with it, they'll be shy to start with; watching their chosen human from the water as they go about their life on land. Then, maybe, they'll shift and try and interact with them on land a little to get to know them. Selkies value community and connection, so it's important that if they're courting someone (as opposed to just sleeping with them as a one-off, which happens a lot more than humans realise, probably!), they need to get to know who they are. They also need to learn if their chosen human is the kind of human to keep their sealskin from them and stop them returning to the sea...
If they go ahead with it, they bring their human gifts from the sea. Whether that's helping fishermen with their catches or bringing beautiful and rare pearls for decoration, or treasures lost in shipwrecks.
Selkies are tactile lovers, so expect lots of touches and hugs and contact, even in the early stages. It's how they let people know they're interested, after all.
I'm sure there's more but that's all I can think of right now. Thanks for reaching out, and I'm glad you enjoy my work.
Don't forget that I'm going to be slowly migrating all my stuff over to Patreon soon, including free-to-read Tumblr stories, so if you want to keep reading (and re-read!) my stories that have been posted on here, make sure you're a free member on Patreon so you can have access to the Tumblr Archives when they go up. I will be deleting old stories from here in light of my lack of trust of Tumblr to handle people's creative content...

So I've been thinking of the Omegaverse lately and I can't quit thinking about adopting the entire fantasy trope around it.
Like, for example, just imagine...
An Alpha Siren who happens to discover its Omega Reader while there's a cruise ship above, which leads Alpha Siren to follow the ship to port while attempting to gather Omega Reader's attention, stalking you from a distance, leaving little love trinkets everywhere you go, before finally kidnapping you and dragging you need into the dark abyss.
Or reverse it— An Alpha Reader hunting down their Omega Siren, searching the ends of the Earth, diving in vast oceans, countlessly losing your Omega Siren after a single glance, only for your Omega Siren to come to you, half laying on the deck, wagging their tail desperately, wantonly begging for their Alpha Reader to impregnate them.
An Alpha Dragon that captures treasures in their vast abode while waiting on their perfect omega, then happens to discover Omega Reader gathering herbs. We can even turn you into an Omega Witch. Captured by the dragon, fighting for your life, even when your heat kicks in...
Or maybe an Omega Dragon that sneaks up on Alpha Witch Reader in the forest one day and refuses to leave your side. Whines like a puppy, guards like a dog, purrs like a cat, but is as horny as a rabbit when it comes to its heat.
How about an Alpha Naga hunting in the forest, searching for prey for their tribe, then comes across Omega Reader collecting samples, safeguarding the forest, or whatever else you may be doing for planet earth, and takes the chance to observe a new species before falling quickly. Alpha Naga ends up causing your premature heat, kidnapping you from your tent, and hiding you deep in a cave. Your heat gets the better of you but that doesn't mean you won't put up a fight.
Or an Omega Naga that you find as an adventurer that fights you tooth and claw. After winning, maybe it just slithers away or, because of Alpha Reader's pheromones, they go into heat. Maybe you help Omega Naga through its heat intimately, or maybe they are the ones who claw at your shirt, coiling their tail around your legs, their forked tongue kissing your neck and face, even the slippery cocks that end up slipping between its orifice.
Take an Omega Selkie that adores the shore and while swimming to the surface, catches wind of your Alpha pheromones, which leads to the Omega Selkie searching everywhere for you, discovering your swimming form scuba diving or just swimming leisurely, they end up playing with you in their seal form before revealing their true self when you have to leave. It's pretty hard to turn down a tempting and innocent creature that's leaking for you to sate their desires.
Or an Alpha Selkie who dominated the waves, blending in with humans while protecting the seas, they also dare to sift through the human omegas before coming across you, which leads to your rejection and their perseverance until you end up being emotionally and physically attached. Now you’ve got no where to run and no where to hide with Alpha Selkie breathing down your neck and following you at every turn.
Maybe try an Alpha Harpy bleeding from a wound in a fight and comes across you, an Omega Bird Hybrid, before passing out, to which you take them in and clean them up, feeding them, nursing them back to health. Alpha Harpy refuses to leave at the end, declaring themselves your mate, grabbing many courting gifts to give you, nonstop attempts to mate you, aiding you in building your nest and even collecting your meals.
Or maybe an Omega Harpy that is in constant need of affection but refuses themselves from having any contact with it due to their abused childhood, thus leading Alpha Reader, who has Omega Harpy as a pet, to care for their needs, to learn more about habits and behaviors, before attempting to try anything, which leads to multiple disputes that ends bloody for Alpha Reader before you honestly takes care of Omega Harpy through their heat, platonically, thus ending up with them falling for you.. but more slowly and with caution.
We could try an Alpha Cereberus Pack that has lived for thousands of years, most of them mateless and horny, until one night where they meet their perfect little Omega, you, a Cat Hybrid. They're sent to guard the demon that's killing your neighbors, all the while watching you, individually, invisibly, before the demon comes after your Omega Cat Hybrid Reader— which sends Alpha Cereberus Pack feral and ends up taking the demon's life and disappearing with you...
Or an Omega Cereberus Pack that have been abandoned by their last owners or their parents (bc that's the way of life what cruel abusive demons do) and are starved, on the brink of death, when innocent Alpha Cat Hybrid Reader finds them in the wet rain before taking them safely home. You take good care of the Omega Cereberus Pack, even as they snap and growl at your every move, but eventually, they grow fond of you, growing like wild weeds, and, out of nowhere, they've become adults, begging in heat one day.
Maybe enjoy an Omega Arachne that is super shy and scared of others that are not of their kind due to the screams of terror when coming in contact with someone else. Omega Arachne who's lived alone for a few hundred years, succumbing to loneliness.. then they caught a whiff of Alpha Reader's pheromones and suddenly went into a force heat, which causes your rut to come into play, but not until you've stumbled upon their web (in a cave, in a forest, or maybe on a mountain).
Or an Alpha Arachne that has set his eyes on you, an Omega Arachne (or maybe an Omega Lamia) since you were born, watching, waiting, for the perfect time to strike and capture you in their web. Alpha Arachne designs a web for the upcoming mating season and delivers many prey of all kinds for the honeymoon, and even if they don't end up catching your attention, they take matters into their own legs and kidnap you for their own. After a clutch or two, they know you'll be fine.

A flock of seagulls screeched overhead, providing very unwanted backing vocals to the screaming of the flailing young man that was currently being hauled towards the shore by a particularly ill-tempered selkie.
“Seabed below, could you please cooperate!” she snapped, beating her tail against the waves. “I am trying to help you!” It was hard enough to swim half transformed like this, let alone having to use both arms to keep hold of this panicking idiot.
At long last she reached shallower waters. Shallow enough at least, to safely let go of the human.
“There!” she cried, heaving him in the general direction of the beach. “Get yourself ashore!
He flailed some more for a few moments, screaming his head off and thrashing in the shallow water, until he realised he could stand and began wading frantically to the shore.
The selkie watched him go with exasperation. “You’re welcome,” she barked after him, and then pulled her pelt back up over her head and dove back into the waves.
She did not show her human face again until she had reached her favourite rock. A nice, big, flat one, that rose just above sea level. Arms were helpful in pulling yourself out of the water. The selkie flopped comfortably on her stomach, her lower half still in the foamy water, determined to still enjoy at least something of the early morning. It had been such a nice morning, before all the screaming, with the wisps of mist that drew from the sea towards the shore only barely dissolving.
It was not to be, however. She had barely folded her suntanned arms under her head, or an annoyingly familiar shape came through the faint haze of the last morning mist. A black mare, the gate of her hooves as smooth as poetry and her manes dark like the night. Kicking up and trampling pebbles under gleaming black hooves the horse charged across the beach and straight into the water. The selkie watched the proud head disappear beneath the waves with narrowed eyes. A moment later there was a splash of water beside her rock and two pale hands gripped its slick edge.
The selkie met the sea-green eyes of the transforming kelpie with a scowl. In the grey light of morning her skin seemed almost silvery, but she knew the lighting didn't matter, her frustrating kelpie companion always looked equally and annoyingly beautiful.
“I swear, if I have to rescue one more of your stupid victims—” she growled.
“Good morning to you too,” the kelpie tutted, arranging herself on the rock with an effortless grace the selkie felt she never possessed while she had human limbs.
“I mean it,” she snapped. “That was the third one this week!”
She was sick and tired of it. You’d think humans would eventually learn, but they never did. There was always someone stupid enough to mistake the kelpie for a normal horse and anyone foolish enough to climb onto her back got galloped straight into the sea. She didn’t actually hurt them, she just left them to splash around, but only very few of them managed to swim back to the shore on their own. Most of them needed help. Help that usually took the form of a very annoyed selkie.
The kelpie grinned, teeth gleaming in the pale light of morning. “You don’t have to rescue them.”
“I like my sea free of screaming humans, thanks,” the selkie grunted. “Seriously. Can’t you give it a rest for a while?”
“I would, but they make it so easy,” the kelpie grinned. “Besides, if I stop, who knows how long I’d have to wait for you to come and chat to me again…” She winked and slid off the rock back into the water. The silky ripple of the kelpie’s long, black hair fanned out wide and seemed to stain her skin until a moment later a beautiful black horse raised her head up above the water.
The selkie gave a furious scoff, jumping out of her pelt in order to stand up, tracking the dark shape in the water with her eyes. “You came to see me!” she yelled after the equine form galloping triumphantly into the sea foam. “You always do!”
There was no reply. Just a distinctive kelpie laugh, sounding loud and neighing across the waves.

Erik: Charles what are you doing?
Charles: Being Charming of course
My attempt at drawing Selkie Charles doing that little temple touch thing James McAvoy does, if it wasn’t clear.
Selkies through their magic do have some powers similar to what their canon counterparts do. Erik is very special in the fact that he is not only a magical creature that isn’t harmed by iron but can actually control it. Some more Selkie lore!

merfolk with any other inhuman race pls! like, merfolk always thought they would marry a human and decides to take matters in their own hands by going to the surface, only to be captured by an orc's fishing net, or a minotaur finds them before a human does...
Ohh I love this<3 Going with a Selkie because they’re so hot and I love them
Happy Earth Day: Post Six
Marseili had always been fascinated with human culture. Despite her fears of being trapped on the land forever, there were times she couldn’t help herself but hide her seal skin and look around the land. That was what she was on her way to do that day. Swimming eagerly towards the shore. She didn’t even notice the fishing net spread out along the reef until it was too late.
She slammed into the net, tangling herself instantly. Panic started to set in as she struggled to untangle herself, but her seal flippers were useless. The idea of taking off her skin crossed her frantic mind, but the idea of dropping it and it being lost to the sea forever was too terrifying to risk- even if it meant being caught. At least a human wouldn’t destroy her skin so she had a chance to find it later.
As she was tugged up in the net, she was surprised not to see a human- but an Orc. Typically Orcs didn’t like to be on the sea, and yet there he was, tugging her closer and closer to the boat. When he saw her, still in her seal form, he grunted.
“Wee dumb thing. Didn’t wantae catch yin o' ye,” he muttered as he tugged the net up and caught sight of her.
With surprising tenderness, he untangled her from the net. Careful of her flippers and whiskers. Marseili’s heart was pounding in her chest as his rough, weathered hands gently moved against her slippery skin. Once she was free, a small smile tugged at the corner of the orc’s lips.
“Thare ye gang, wee dumb thing. Ye'r jammy ye'r cute,” he chuckled, patting her seal head before returning to the fish on the net. He picked one up, tossing it at her. “Thare yer. Noo git.”
She caught the fish easily in her mouth, but she had no intention of leaving. Instead she quickly swallowed down the fish before jumping back into the water, but she watched the orc closely. Over the next few weeks, she would follow his boat to and from the shore. Almost every day he went fishing, bringing back fresh fish to sell at the market. He had noticed her following him too, and had begun greeting her in the morning and bidding her a good night every evening.
One day, she swam into his net again so he’d have to pull him up. When he did and saw her, he laughed heartily. A deep, low rumbling laugh that made his face seem younger, softer. “Mah dumb wee thing! Whit urr ye daein'?”
Just like before, he softly untangled her from the net, his hands soft and kind against her wet skin. Also just like before, he turned to grab a fish to toss at her. However, this time instead of a seal, he saw a beautiful woman standing in front of him, sheepishly holding a seal skin against her body to give some sense of modesty.
“Weel, ah be damned,” he said lowly, his dark eyes roaming over her figure. “A selkie then, eh?”
“Yes,” Marseili said softly, biting her lower lip as she looked up at him through her long, thick lashes.
“Then why'd ye keep getting caught in mah net? ye lot ur tae smart fur that,” he asked as he walked up to her, handing her the fish still in his hand.
“Ah think ye'r cute, 'n' crakin'. Ah wanted tae blether tae ye properly,” she mumbled, a smile creeping across her face as his large hand caught her chin, tilting it up so he had to look up at him.
“Then blether, mah cute wee thing,” he said, his tusks nearly catching her cheeks as he leaned in.
Through all of this, he made no move to grab her seal skin. Made no move to grab or trap her. She knew that she didn’t want a human anymore-she wanted an orc.

A Sweet Sting Of Salt By Rose Sutherland -- A Review
Tumblr media
Trigger Warnings: Kidnapping, mention of rape, domestic violence, homophobia, mentions of death in labour, mentions of self-harm, war, emotional abuse, stalking, outing, animal cruelty, gaslighting, murder, drowning, psychological abuse, isolation, and mentions of miscarriage.
My Rating
9/10. I blew through this book, it took me two days. I loved it. I have always been intrigued by selkies, and I can never pass up a sapphic slow-burn love story. The ending was the right amount of tension and heart-wrenching, although at the very end, the dialogue was worded oddly and sounded cliche. The writing felt like it was from two separate books. Overall, it is a beautiful love story with gorgeous descriptions and a very entertaining climax.
Overview
Jean, the town midwife, has been ostracized from society. Her only friends are her mentor, Anneke, and Laurie. When one night, she is woken up by a cry late one night, by her neighbour's new wife. Thus, starting an unlikely friendship, despite Jean's reluctance to form friendship with anyone to protect herself. As Jean teaches Muirin English, she learns more and more concerning this, and as her intrigue grows, so do Jean’s feelings for Muirin.
My Thoughts
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and for a debut novel, it was done incredibly well. However, the last chapter was not written as well as the rest of the novel. Almost, as if it was the first part written, the rest of the book has a completely different tone. And I also wish that the epilogue added a little more. It felt rushed and unorganized. Almost like the words were thrown on the page as a second thought to clear up any loose ends that were forgotten.
I have always been intrigued by selkies. Selkies are a metaphor for domestic violence, a woman is stolen and held captive against her will, with the husband denying her the right to the outside world. It was so interesting to read a selkie story that was turned on its head. Watching the change in Muirin as she is with Jean versus when she is with Tobias, her husband, was very well written. And watching Muirins personality come out, and Jean becoming so flustered by the tall, hot, foreign lady was quite cute.
I feel so bad for Jean. As a queer woman myself, I do relate to her fear of ostracization and isolation. Always ensuring you are fitting in and not bringing to much attention to yourself. Jean has gone through so much and she just deserves to settle down with her pretty, big, selkie wife.
The setting for this book was amazing. Half of my family lives out east, in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI, so I felt a real connection to the landscape and the superstitions. The east of Canada is so gorgeous and it does not get a lot of outside recognition. The way that Rose described everything made it feel so real, it genuinely felt as though I was experiencing those views and landscapes of rural Nova Scotia myself. Beautifully written when Rose describes the landscape it is like a love letter to the land itself.
The climax of the story was enthralling. I could not put my book down; I was hooked. I was at the edge of my seat, gripping my book for dear life and wishing I could read faster as though the scene would be over before I could experience it. Like when you are watching a movie, and you are scared to look away for one moment and miss the final scene. It has been a while since a book has had such a hard grip on my attention.
Conclusion
Although there are some oddly worded dialogue scenes near the end, it does not change the fact that this is a good book. It blends the worlds of reality and fantasy so well, that it is almost as if selkies really do live in secrecy among us. It had very good pacing and beautifully written scenes. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy low fantasy, anxious queer friends-to-lovers, and a satisfying revenge plot.

Ingo x selkie reader?
Ingo x Selkie Reader!
You've grown up with stories of other selkies talking about how they would lose their loved ones to the humans. It was out of love but at the cost of losing their family, as humans would hide the selkie's fur coat, forbidding their reentry back into the ocean.
You've always looked at humans at a distance, seeing young and old couples gaze at your seal body in adoration before returning their rightful gaze back to their loved ones. You watch as they fawn over each other, making wonderful memories of something you yearned for but did not have.
The selkie community had dwindled over the years. Many left to become fully human or fully seals. Or perhaps to join a new community. You hoped that was the case. It was sad to think if any of your old childhood friends had been, well, eaten by predators.
Though you did not anticipate falling in love with Ingo, as he came unexpectedly into your life, you were always drawn to him.
When you had decided Ingo was your mate, you placed your fur coat within view of his home. But he did not take it.
So you try again. You leave it where he would most definitely see it. But as always, he never touched it.
After the fifth time, you confront him. "Did you not want me?" you asked him. "Why aren't you hiding my coat?"
Ingo then explains to you with all the love in his heart and voice that he doesn't want to steal from you to make you his. He doesn't want to force you to give up your original home, family, and community in order to be his. You may stay as a seal, human, selkie, whatever form you wish to be, but he would stay truthfully yours.
You had never known such love could exist where you would not forsake your origins.
So now, you and Ingo both hang up your coats, your fur coat and his subway boss coat, on the same coat rack nearby the front door.
You tend to his coat, mending it when it needs stitches and in return, he brushes the knots out of yours.
You are a seal.
You are a human.
You are a selkie
You are also Ingo's mate and he is yours.
