I have zero self-control when it comes to creature!cas in any form so I saw a selkie!cas option for the @deancaspinefest and all other thoughts ceased to exist uh

I tried a mix of two styles for this fic's art by combining my usual thick black outlines with the crayon pen on Flipaclip to create layered colors, as per my author's request. this let me do almost like a children's story book vibe here but I think that's just the name of the pen talking. either way look seal Cas hdhfndi (and my attempt at drawing a boat but ignore that as well as the weirdly tiny credits)

here's Dean rescuing Cas who looks like he just woke up from a nap or something there. Dean's expression looked better before I erased half of it to make room for Cas' head and I'm now unsure what face Dean's really supposed to be making beyond exertion meets determination. I originally had a lighter blue sky here (as well as in the banner) but the author assures me the sky in Scotland only comes in grey, which has the added bonus of making this whole atmosphere a little more tense

it took me forever to get a decent angle for this one it was just weirdly impossible for no reason and I only got this after trashing six other partially complete sketches and it still looks kinda weird but it was unexpectedly impossible trying to get a view where you can see Dean and Cas. also just now realizing that the pipe on the showerhead leads nowhere oops

still very bad at drawing water but an attempt was made though Dean's pose could be better and Cas looks too small to really be able to swim Dean back to shore. let's just ignore...all of that uh. I intentionally made Dean's outfit here symbolic and all that. in the other pics, he's wearing reds and greys but now he's wearing a tan not unlike Cas' trench coat (albeit darker) and his flannel is a mixture of blue and green, representing both the ocean and ofc him and Cas (desitle colors gjkdhdgf) because I'm weak and Dean was pining for so long that he subconsciously starting wearing Cas Colors ,_,

so yay style experimentation and double yay for Dean and Cas being dumb again 🎉

Selkies, for those unfamiliar, are shapeshifters common to Scottish and Irish folklore. They're said to be seal-folk who, on the night of a full moon, can shed their skins and take human form.

Legend has it that a man who steals a female selkie's skin can make her his wife, but she will spend her life longing for the sea. Once she finds her skin, she dons it and returns to the sea as a seal, never to be seen again.

Growing up on a tiny Scottish island, Dean has heard the legends before—legends of creatures that swim in one form and walk on land another. He’s very sure they’re supposed to be fictional, too, but when he comes across the injured guy sprawled across the rocks clutching a dirty old trenchcoat, he has to wonder, as he takes him home, whether selkies truly are creatures of myth.

The hum of the engine pulls him back from his distant thoughts. The boat is sailing his familiar route—straight towards the horizon and left towards the trees on the other side of the bay. His little town wraps around the horseshoe curve of the island shore, with huge, thick-trunked pine trees creeping their way up the hills. Dean’s cottage, small and squat, sits closest to the water in all its unimposing, white-washed glory, and just beyond that, the homes and businesses are dotted haphazardly around, deferring to the natural landscape rather than the other way around. Birds fly overhead and roost in the roof of the pub, with the generational knowledge that dropped chips will be abundant there; parents send their children out on the agreement to be back by tea time, and those children become responsibility of the island, briefly, returned to their wild ways. The air is sharp and wet with sea spray. The wind nips in quick around unprotected ears and noses. Nothing changes but the seasons.

Dean turns off the engine and lets the bob of the tide pull them forwards. “Whoah, baby,” he soothes, patting the wheel the way one might gentle a skittish horse into submission. Dean, long used to the choppy waves, isn’t sickened by the gentle rocking; sometimes, it feels strange walking on the still, solid set of dry land. When the boat has found a rhythm, he dons the hat he never wears in front of Sam and steps to the side of the boat where the nets sit rolled up and ready.

“Okay, baby, you got this,” he says, and throws the nets overboard. He doesn’t expect a huge haul, nor does he need one—he only feeds the people on the island, and even then, some of them wait for the fancy stuff from the once-a-week supply ferry. They’re the kind of people who want their fish to come pre-battered, anyway, so he’s not losing out on too much business. While the nets sit in the murky waters below, Dean preps the ice buckets to throw the fish in.

He’s just about to haul the first net in when he sees—no, he doesn’t, and he puts his hands on the net again—but actually, yes, it is, sprawled across the the rocky outcropping on the starboard side of the boat. A guy, dark haired, broad shouldered and—yep, naked as the day he was born. There’s a flush creeping over Dean’s face that he tells himself is from the sun, as he leans out to look at the prone figure, as he cups his hands around his mouth and shouts, “Hey, you over there!” over the sea-soaked wind.

The guy doesn’t stir. If Dean was a betting man, he might wager he was dead (Dean is a betting man, but the only person to gamble with is himself, and he doesn’t trust himself not to cheat). A minute later, he shouts again, to no avail. There’s nothing for it. He’ll have to go over.

20 jours... 3 semaines demain.

J'ai finis les chocolats qu'il m'avait donné. Ils étaient délicieux, je les ai tous savouré avec plaisir.

J'ai commencé à écouter les vocaux qu'il m'avait envoyé. Ca fait mal de l'entendre comme ça, j'ai pris plusieurs pauses et j'ai seulement fini le premier.

J'ai fini par ranger les t-shirts qu'il m'avait laissé. J'ai failli les ressortir hier soir, mais au final j'étais tellement fatiguée que je me suis juste endormie devant mon ordinateur.

Je relis un peu nos conversations parfois, mais seulement les récentes, pas celles d'avant, de quand tout allait bien. Je pense que je suis pas encore prête pour revivre nos souvenirs heureux.

Je dors chaque nuit avec la dernière peluche qu'il m'a offerte. Elle est tellement douce, tellement cute, ça m'apaise un peu.

J'ai utilisé le V. qu'il avait acheté pour moi. J'essaie de me réhabituer à la sensation de plaisir sans l'associer à un souvenir négatif. C'est différent, seule, mais ca semble marcher.

J'ai perdu le poème calligraphié. Je sais plus si je l'ai jeté ou si je l'ai rangé quelque part. Mais je crois pas que ce soit grave. J'ai pas besoin de le retrouver.

J'ai mis l'argent dans une enveloppe, j'ose pas l'utiliser. J'ai un peu honte de me balader avec. J'ai l'impression de profiter.

Je pense à revendre certains des cadeaux, ceux que j'utilise pas. Je les ai mis dans une boite dans mon armoire pour l'instant. Peut-être que je les donnerai à ma sœur.

J'ai annoncé à une seule personne IRL que c'était fini. Ca m'a fait un pincement au coeur de dire "mon ex" à voix haute, c'était bizarre.

Je cherche où mettre son mot. Je dois trouver un cahier ou un classeur ou une pochette. Je devrais pas le garder afficher sur le mur comme ça.

Je sais pas si je renomme mon ours ou pas. Il a toujours eu 2 prénoms de base, peut-être que je vais juste garder l'autre du coup, même si je le trouve triste et un peu ridicule.

J'ai annoncé à Selkie qu'il y a eu "divorce." Bon, c'est une peluche et il a jamais rencontré son 'père' donc je pense qu'il s'en fiche, mais moi j'ai pleuré. Il m'a consolé.

J'alterne entre la playlist de rupture et la playlist d'amour, selon mon humeur. Les deux me donnent envie de pleurer, ceci dit. Et de crier aussi. Ca fait du bien et du mal à la fois. Bizarre.

Je recommence à passer du temps sous la douche. Des je revis nos dernières conversations dans ma tête, des fois je zone out juste. Mais c'est pas une bonne chose.

Je zone out et daydream de plus en plus souvent. Je me vois réexpliquer encore et encore pourquoi je pars, de toutes les manières possibles, avec plein de métaphores. Il ne comprend jamais.

J'ai fini d'enlever nos dates de partout. Même sur Steam, c'était le dernier car j'y vais jamais. J'ai gardé les screens ceci dit.

J'ai bloqué son numéro il y a quelques jours. A cause d'un pavé reçu littéralement 10 minutes avant un exam. Je suis trop stressée en ce moment pour gérer tout ça en parallèle.

Je dois avoir 7 ou 8 post en brouillon sur lui. Certains datant d'avant, des poèmes non finis que je peux pas supprimer. D'autres datent d'après, des pensées trop désordonnées pour être publiées.

J'ai repris la rédaction d'une vieille fanfic jamais postée. Elle me fait douloureusement penser à cette situation. La phrase phare : "aimer, ça ne suffit pas."

Je suis sur le même livre depuis 2 mois. Une histoire d'amour triste. D'habitude j'adore ça, mais là... J'ai jamais mis autant de temps à lire un roman. Mais je sais comment ça va finir : mal.

Voilà, je crois qu'on va s'arrêter là pour le journal de ma vie ? Je sais pas si y a d'autres trucs à noter, je suis fatiguée, j'arrête pas d'écrire depuis 4 jours avec tous les devoirs qu'on a à rendre et tous les exams qu'on passe.

Je pense que je vais reprendre Grey's Anatomy petit à petit du coup, j'avais arrêté de le faire seule pour regarder uniquement avec lui, mais va falloir que je me réhabitue... Je vais essayer de continuer de jouer à Stardew Valley solo aussi, j'aimais bien ce jeu, c'est juste que mon attention est facilement détournée.

Bref... Toujours pas à pas, parfois un de travers, parfois un en arrière, mais je crois que j'avance. La direction est moins importante que le chemin.

what mythical creature would your oc be ?

example :

i personally think aurien would be some kind of mermaid, with the moon controlling the ocean primarily and all . specifically, probably something like, a jellyfish mermaid, or even a selkie .

if aurien would be a jellyfish mermaid, she’d probably be a moon jellyfish at that as well . i also made this random connection between auri and jellyfish in how jellyfish have tendrils, and how in a way aurien would reach out with her tendrils to connect with everyone in her way of making sure to approach and get to know everyone at least on a surface level .

but if aurien was a selkie, id say she’d be a more toned down version . kinda like bronagh from song of the sea, as instead of following the . . normal legend of selkies, i think it was said she willingly became human because she fell in love ? i dunno .

anyways, i hope to see a lot of opinions ! i really like reading them myself : 3 .

Day 18: Family Business

(Set in the Faerie Court of Avalon, NJ series. Sam is a half-faerie prince, Cas and Jimmy Novak are his husbands, and Jack is their adopted selkie son.)

THE END OF school and the start of summer was greeted with mixed reactions from the students at Middle Township High School. The final days of school were often shortened to half-days that were more shindig than scholastic, and many of the students in the freshman class just didn't bother going. In the higher grades it was a more mixed bag, some kids choosing to skip out so they could get a head start on summer job applications, while others stuck to the school schedule to avoid having to job hunt or, in the case of the graduating seniors, get any last minute help on college applications.

Newly-sixteen-year-old Jack Kline and his best friends, Matt Pike and Kaia Nieves, were a very mixed bag in that respect. All three of them had made it clear to their fellow classmates that they intended to spend the summer working, but the where and when they started was still a bit up in the air.

"Would've thought that was already settled," Krissy Chambers said where she sat straddling the bench at the lunch table.

"Why would you think that?" Matt asked, exchanging a confused glance with Jack. "I mean, it's a summer job, not a career. There's plenty of options, but not all the options are gonna be good fits for padding our respective college applications in two years...."

"Move, bitches," Kaia interrupted, sliding in between Matt and Krissy with an armful of sodas and snack bags. "We're in the final days so the pickings are a bit slim. What's your poison?"

"Cocaine," Jack deadpanned, laughing when Kaia flipped him off and slid a can of Cherry Coke across the table to him.

"I don't understand," Krissy said, absentmindedly grabbing a can of Sprite as she looked around the group. "I mean, I'm going to be working at the marina with my dad, Jack's obviously going to go work at that cafe his dads own--"

"No I'm not," Jack broke in, surprised. "I mean, yeah, Dad would hire me on for the summer if that's what I wanted, but I've actually got a lifeguard gig lined up at the beach."

"What?" Krissy's exclamation was echoed by two other kids, Jason Pond and Ben Braeden, who'd obviously been eavesdropping. Seeing that they were being acknowledged, Jason coughed and added, "Most of us kinda figured your dads would have you joining the family business right out of school, what with all three of them working there."

"And your mom, too," Ben added, which... what?

"My mom is dead, guys," Jack reminded them, getting a wince from Jason and Krissy and an eyeroll from Ben.

"Stepmom, then," Ben corrected himself. "Or whatever it is you call Miss Charlie."

"I call her Charlie," Jack said, sharing a bewildered look with Matt and Kaia. "Maybe Aunt Charlie if I wanna tease her for getting old or something, but she's not one of my parents." Frankly, Charlie was way more influential over Kaia than him, the way his best female friend had taken to emulating her whenever appropriate.

"Dude, did you just assume every fulltime employee at Lighthouse CommodiTeas was part of the polycule?" Kaia snorted, unintentionally reinforcing Jack's mental point, and full on laughing when Ben blushed. "Yeah, no. Charlie met Sam because her former girlfriend pointed her in his direction when she wanted to get her jackass corporate boss arrested for crimes against humanity or something. Cas and Jimmy came around for their own reasons and stayed because they fell for Sam and Sam fell right back."

"And all three of my dads also went to college before deciding to work in a cafe," Jack pointed out, bringing the conversation back around to the previous topic. "Multiple times in Dad's case since, y'know, fuctionally immortal half-faerie; I think he's got a couple of doctorates and a handful of masters degrees at this point. But Papa J and Papa C both went to college and got degrees in Communications and Technical Writing respectively, and when they first started talking about getting married Dad sat down with them to figure out ways they could put those degrees to proper use since they wouldn't have to worry about money anymore. And since they're all three functionally immortal, in a few decades they'll have probably found people they like and trust to take over the cafe or buy it and they'll go on to do something else."

"Really?" came from Ben, Jason, Krissy and, surprisingly, Matt.

"I kinda thought the cafe was your dads' passion project or something," Matt admitted to Jack's raised eyebrow, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Eh, for now, maybe?" Jack shrugged. "Dad opened the place originally when we moved here to give us both a touchstone with the broader community, but he only really considered expanding or building up the place a little after Papa C started baking there. So, like, it's a business that's run by my family, but it's not a family business, y'know? Not like the Three Black Cats diner run by the Banes family, or Krissy's dad's place at the marina."

"It honestly never occurred to me to make that distinction," Krissy admitted sheepishly. "I mean, it always seemed like a given that I'd go to school until I graduate and then come work with Dad. I mean, isn't that what most parents expect of their kids?"

Several loaded looks were shared around the table for a moment. Eventually, Matt sighed and set down his grape Fanta. "Look, my foster mom is a selkie sheriff and her girlfriend is a veterinarian, and they both encouraged me to decide for myself what I want to do. Meanwhile, my bio dad tried to sacrifice me to a pagan god to lift an ancient curse on tribal land his company was trying to commercialize, so I figure he doesn't get a vote anymore."

"I don't know who my bio parents were or what they did," Kaia said with a shrug. "And my foster parents were unenthused when my powers manifested, so I don't really care what they think, either."

"My mom works in a morgue," Jason added with a dry look. "With the Revelation and recent protections for folks like us, she doesn't have to, and she says I don't either if I want to do something else."

"Mom's a yoga instructor," Ben offered without elaborating.

"And we just went over what my dads do and why," Jack piped up, covering his cousin's reticence. "My mom was a selkie like me and worked as an underwater environmental lobbyist until my sperm donor stole her coat. She gave me to Dad in exchange for vengeance on the asshole as a way to protect me from being trapped and abused like she was, and Dad's done his best to fulfill that wish. So we all figure what I do is my choice, and being a lifeguard will look good for applying to Annapolis or getting into another college on a ROTC scholarship, get a degree that'll give me a flipper up with the Navy."

"Huh," Krissy sat back, looking a little troubled. "Am I being boring for just going to work for my Dad?"

"Nah," Matt shook his head.

"Kinda," Ben said, holding up his hands when Kaia glared at him, "but if it's what you really want to do, as a long term thing or even if you just want to do it while you look for something else to call to your passion, then our opinions don't mean shit."

"Choice matters," Jack added earnestly. "At the end of the day, no one can make your choices for you. Even if they think they can, you still have to agree to go along with it," he added with a flicker of a glance towards Ben, who ducked his head in a way that could've been a nod.

"Okay," Krissy nodded, looking a bit happier.

For a few minutes all of them just drank their sodas or munched on the chips, pretzels, and funions, each with their own set of thoughts. Eventually, Ben cleared his throat and glanced up at Jack.

"So, since you won't be going to work at the cafe," he said slowly, one finger tapping a finger against the near empty can, "you think your dad might be willing to hire me for the summer?"

"Only one way to find out," Jack said with a smirk. "Just don't call Charlie my mom again, for your own protection. You will get way too much information about her and Miss Dorothy."

"Dorothy Baum?"

"The school librarian?!"

Jack sat back and let his friends have their mental meltdowns over finding out about their librarian's lesbian love affair with his favorite aunt. It was times like this when he definitely understood Uncle Dean's propensity for mischief. Making a mental note to let his Dad know that Cousin Ben might be around looking for a summer job regardless of his mom's wishes to keep him away from their "bad influence", he settled in with his soda to enjoy the show.
