“With all of my heart, I hate love.” Part One

Those were words Sei Shima constantly repeated, yet she still fondly looked at those she loved so desperately. She loved them unconditionally, yet was denied the romance she wanted and deserved. That is the fate of a girl like her, who just wanted happiness and only received trauma. It’s a wonder how could Sei ever love these boys when they only destroy her, leaving her to only suffer in silence.

Toshiro could only softly gasp at the person Kita had brought along with him to save Sei, for she swore she’s seen actually bite one of his teammates before. Raven hair that seemed untamable with sharp crimson eyes hidden behind thin framed glasses, he was Eito Mitsu, an A ranked Okami. Why would such a savage person come along to save team nine’s leader when they already had two S class monsters on their side? Noticing her odd look towards the raven, the fox laughed, pulling Eito forward despite his annoyance. 

“This is our secret weapon, Eito Mitsu, an Okami who serves the Shima family, specifically Sei. He’s also someone she can not get married in front of, for he’s her first love!” Kita laughed, boastful that he was intelligent enough to bring the wolf with them. The other male didn’t appear to enjoy this, scowling at the team nine members in front of him. “Shut up, you sound so proud for someone who had to manipulate her to even get an ounce of her love. Either way, come on, we gotta get to work if we want to crash a wedding with you guys looking like this.”

Toshiro frowned at his choice of words, opening her mouth to speak, only to be cut off by Zadoc crashing into the place with bags in hand. “I got everyone's clothing! Quickly change, we only have a few hours and we don’t know if we gotta fight our way in!”

Bursting through the church doors, the parents of the wedded stood up, outraged for such an interruption. Toshiro’s breath hitched, staring at the miserable girl who was to be married, Sei Shiki. She wasn’t looking at them, but rather the floor with a frown despite her gorgeous looks. The cold beauty’s hair was tied into an elegant bun, small blue flowers entwined, giving her a pure look, as her ball gown styled wedding dress had blue crystals decorating it. Looking closely, that same blue shade appeared constantly, from the earrings, to the oddly chain-like ribbons on her bouquet of ocean song roses, the only non blue or white item on her. 

The groom’s father glared at the four high school students, his distress wearing down his glamor magic, showing them flashes of a serpent. “Why have you come to disturb such a joyful day!” Kita sighed, running his fingers through his hair with a rare frown. “Because you have something, or rather, someone we want. Now, darling won’t you come with us?” Their target merely looked away to the other side, unknowing to them of her sad smile. She was happy, so very happy they wanted to save her from her fate. “I can’t, I am bound as the head of the Shima family. It might be my mother who planned for this, but it was approved by the high council as well.” “Shut up and come over here, Sei. I can barely even look at you, you hate the color blue yet here we are.”

Eito’s sharp voice cut though, as he walked forward, successfully earning Sei’s attention after the Kitsune's failed attempt. Zadoc looked panicked on the other hand, realizing who they were just who they were messing with now, gently pulling him back only to be met with a snarl as he went forward. Toshiro was filled with confusion at the scene in front of her, as her mentor seemed to only respond to the Okami’s voice despite clinging closely to Kita. Just what is going on? 

Sei’s eyes were filled with conflict, torn between her duties and her heart with her precious teammates and crush being right there. “Eito…? I thought you were still on a mission with your team in Tokyo. Either way, none of you should be here.” She didn’t want anyone to watch as she gave away her heart to a relationship that would never last, especially in front of Eito. Her mother and the groom’s parents seemed pleased with her wording, though not expecting it.  A loud growl came from said person as he closed the distance between him and her, picking her up bridal style, making her gasp from the roughness. 

“I’m taking her no matter what anyone says and tearing away this awful blue from her. She hates it with a passion, yet you dress her in it, disgusting!

Eito Mitsu, Sei’s first love and servant by bloodline, a cruel man who merely looked away from her affection no matter how much he loved her himself. He hated her, yet worshiped the ground she walked upon, for she was like a forgiving god to someone like him. Violent and uncontrollable, Eito has lashed out on her more than one can keep count, leaving her mentally and physically scarred, locked under her memories to prevent her fear. 

And yet, no one loved her as much as he had, despite his unhealthy wrath. Eito’s whole being was one of love and hate towards the girl who saved and plunged him into despair, wholeheartedly wanting to watch as Sei destroyed and reassembled herself over and over.

So uh, yeah I’m starting this mini series that does take some parts of my book for this. Not everything will be kept though so the scene can change dramatically in the actual book. Plus due to creative difficulties, The Making of a Spirit Tamer books will be on hold as I need to write a full book and this is just too much for my time limit right now. I spent a year doing this, yet made little progress on the actual book.

I read Tetsuya Furuta's "Doing philosophy by usual words". This contains various interesting topics, and I learned the difficulty of doing communication or discussion by our words. But we have to do communication and trials to understand each other by them and treat each opinion as precious things (of course, we never be able to understand each other completely). For that purpose, we have to keep the attitude which is to treat every opinion as an important thing. But now is the era that a lot of opinions appear like bubbles (and most of them are supported by no responsibility). It is difficult to say opinions that have a certain intention.

I heard that Russia started the war against Ukraine. This news reminded me of the song "Russians" by Sting. In this song, Sting imagines and sings how the people in Russia (at that time we called it 'Soviet') think about the politicians who are haunted by hysteria, and also how they think about 'the West (in short, us who live in Capitalism)'. 'We share the same biology/Regardless of ideology'. In other words, beyond the wall of ideology, we are all human beings. This is the truth... maybe people say that I'm saying quite nonsense. How long years have passed since the Cold War era?

You're right. This says that my understanding Russia had stopped at the Cold War era. I have to update it... but I don't want to throw this point of view. We are all human beings... I want to keep the stance as Sting sings like 'There's no such thing as a winnable war/It's a lie we don't believe anymore'. The war had happened, but this struggle provides what? For a long span, this war brings any better solution? We have to lose precious lives but that should be the costs we have to pay? We have to think about this with patience (Alt-rights in Twitter as Seishiki Aron might laugh at this sentimentalism).

I have various friends in various countries on WhatsApp. One of them is from Russia and another one is working at the UN and from Ukraine. They think about this problem with cool heads instead of banal patriotism. By the way, I envy the people who can speak about 'our national interest' and 'the peace spirit of Article 9 in our constitution'. I have no great opinions like them. Just I think about those friends. What can I do for them? I am not a politician or a CEO. Just a person lives in Japan. How can I help them? My interest is in that. I say no war now. The reason? Don't kill us. That's all.

About “Ardyn Lucis Caelum Izunia”

Ardyn’s true identity is still a mystery even today with the release of Ignis DLC. But one little line of dialogue confirms what I always thought about him…

Izunia has always been Ardyn’s family name.

I came to this conclusion thanks to Ardyn’s revelation to Ignis but not only.

Crystal Scene

The starting point of everything is Ardyn’s speech to Noctis during the Chapter 13. Here he reveals his « complete » name, « Ardyn Lucis Caelum », keeping Izunia a mystery. But the French version of the game is very clear on it: Izunia is simply Ardyn’s family name.

This is the French line: «Quand je t’ai donné mon nom, je ne t’ai pas menti, mais je n’ai pas précisé mon nom officiel.» «Ardyn Lucis Caelum. Comme le tien. Mais... Izunia est resté mon nom de famille.»

Wich means literally: « When I gave you my name, I didn’t lie to you, but I didn’t precise my official name. » « Ardyn Lucis Caelum. Like yours. But… Izunia remained my family name. »

The French is the only language that doesn’t have the rhetoric question in this part, because it was hard to translate this subtility with such few words. (But instead delivers more informations.) For example in German Ardyn says « Hm... Von wem war noch mal der Name Izunia? », in English « You’ll never guess whose name Izunia was. » and even in Japanese « ああ。 イズニアは誰の姓だったか――― » (« Ah... Izunia ha dare no sei datta ka ? »/ « Ah… Whose name was Izunia? »).

All of this can be confusing about what the word « Izunia » really is. But the Japanese word used to qualify this name « 姓 » refers to a family name, a surname like in French. So Izunia can’t be a first name.

The second information on Izunia is given by Talcott during Chapter 14. When he tells Noctis what him and Ignis discovered about the chancellor, this is what he says:

French: « Finalement, on a trouvé quelque chose de bizarre : un homme du même nom était mentionné dans un document très ancien. « Ardyn Izunia ». Pareil. » Wich means literally: « Finally, we found something strange: a man with the same name was mentioned in a very ancient document. « Ardyn Izunia ». The same. »

You can see here something that is missing from the English version but not in the other languages, Ardyn’s family name. (German «Wir sind in alten Schriften auf einen vertrauten Namen gestoßen: Ardyn Izunia.»/ Japanese «かなり音の資料に 同じ名前があったんです アーデン・イズニアって»)

It seems that the only remaining document about Ardyn’s identity considers him simply as Ardyn Izunia, confirming that it was probably the name given to him at birth while « Lucis Caelum » is more a title he acquired after.

Episode Ignis

The last information comes with Ignis DLC, in the alternative part of the story.

In front of the Crystal, Ardyn reveals his complete name to Ignis:

French «Mon véritable nom... Je te le donne en entier : Ardyn «Lucis Caelum» Izunia.»

This information doesn’t appear in English or even in Japanese, but is here in German as you can see on the screenshots.

The fact that « Lucis Caelum » is in inverted commas implies that its like a nickname and not part of his true name.

The name is complete in German.

No “イズニア ” (Izunia) in Japanese.

In fact, in French Ardyn is very coherent about his name.

He says clearly to Noctis that he didn’t lie to him when he introduced himself before, implying that Ardyn Izunia is his correct identity. So it’s pretty normal that « Izunia remained his family name » as he explains to Noct, even if for some times he was known as Ardyn Lucis Caelum.

The Japanese is clear on this too: « 俺の名前さ。 あれ本名だけど 正式名じゃなかったんだよね。 » «Ore no namae sa... Are honmyou dakedo seishiki me ja nakattan da yo ne» « About my name… That is my real name but it wasn’t my formal name. »

Once again, you can see that Ardyn Izunia is definitely Ardyn’s true name and that « Lucis Caelum » is considered as a title, as an « official » name. (French « […] je n’ai pas précisé mon nom officiel »/ Japanese « […] 正式名じゃなかったんだよね » 正式= official)

The German version only validate the fact that Ardyn is indeed named Ardyn, but nothing about the family name, just saying that he introduced himself with a short form of his name: «Ich heiße tatsächlich Ardyn. Allerdings nur in Kurzform. Den Nachnamen habe ich ausgelassen...» But Ardyn adds: «Ardyn Lucis Caelum - mein Name! Hm... Von wem war noch mal der Name Izunia?» Here, the construction of the phrase seems to oppose « Lucis Caelum, my name » with the end of the sentence « to who belonged the name Izunia ». This can explain why some people dissociated Ardyn and Izunia.

Ardyn: Hey, Noct! Try to guess my name! I help you, it begins with an A...

But the top of the confusion comes with the English line: «I gave you my name earlier, but you should know that it was not the name given to me at birth.»

This is just not possible.

I tried a lot of scenarios in my mind to explain this but this version can’t exist in the same time as the French or the Japanese version. Because here, this implies that Ardyn was born as Ardyn Lucis Caelum. Izunia becomes a mystery and Lucis Caelum is not a nickname anymore. All of this is reinforced by the absence of the name « Izunia » in Talcott speech and now in Episode Ignis.

I’m not working at Square Enix, I don’t know the truth, but the English version is the only one claiming that Izunia was not his birth name and never mentionning it again anywhere else. In the same time, the other localizations seem to state that Izunia is Ardyn’s last name while « Lucis Caelum » is only a nickname, an official form, a stage name.

So for me it’s pretty clear: Ardyn’s name is Ardyn Izunia, and he was known as Ardyn Lucis Caelum in the past, likely while he was healing people. His brother has probably the same name as Ardyn, but when Ardyn was banished and erased from History, his name became synonym of corruption. So his brother abandoned Izunia as a family name and keeped only the « Lucis Caelum » part not tainted with darkness, leading to Noctis lineage.

The last part is just my opinion, but for Ardyn’s name I’m convinced that Izunia is and has always simply been his family name.

(I used English/Japanese/French/German because the game has a dubbed localization for these languages, implying that texts can be different depending of the dubbing constraints. The other languages followed most of the time the English version when it comes to subtitles, with very few changes.)
