hot take i guess but when i watch the scene with billy and agatha where she finds out for sure he’s billy maximoff and starts tearing up, i perceive it as being bc she’s still a bit (read: significantly) heartbroken that he isn’t nicky. he isn’t hers. sure, she might’ve known from the beginning to some degree that he was wanda’s, but she doesn’t know for sure. we see that every time she panics because he’s hurt. we see that in the way she refused to leave his side when he was asleep. we see that when rio herself has to shake agatha out of it, saying, “agatha… that boy isn’t yours.” like YES logically i think she knew he wasn’t nicky, that he couldn’t be but we CAN see how painfully, hopelessly desperate agatha is to think that maybe he could be. so in my mind, she sees billy maximoff standing in front of her, finally being met with indisputable proof that he could not possibly be her lost son. how could she not tear up at that?
#idk#i’ve just been seeing a lot of edits and posts ab this scene#where people are using it to be like Oh Wow look at how much she cares about billy! she really does love him!#and i just…#i don’t think that’s wrong necessarily and i do think on some level she prob does care for billy even as he truly is#but i do NOT think the truly cares that much about wanda’s children#and i also really can’t see her being an aunt figure to him at all#a mentor? friend maybe?? a kid she’s werurdly attached to bc he reminds her of the song she lost centuries ago?? probably#*weirdly *son UGH#but i don’t think she cares bc she’s like. reminicising on the time they spent together in westview yknow?#she literally called tommy toby like im sorry but she don’t give a fuck 😭#but also to be fair i do think a large part of the climax of this show and the point of it#is going to come down to agatha continuing to develop an emotional connection with him#and i do ultimately think their relationship will be so vital and pivotal to the plot and both of their arcs#i just unfortunately cannot seem to interpret it the way a lot of you are i’m sorry#agatha all along#agatha harkness#billy maximoff#william kaplan#wiccan#kathryn hahn#joe locke#nicholas scratch#wandavision#wanda maximoff#marvel cinematic universe#mcu#marvel mcu

#the way they both cling to their families while in distress#their families are their most cherished people that they somehow can't reach#Hürrem has literally lost them long ago#while Ibrahim has reunited with them and has placed them close to him due to his own love for them and his position in the castle#but it's precisely that same position that distances him from them and *will* distance him from them even *more* down the line#the reactions here also reveal how Hürrem and Ibrahim view death#Hürrem embraces it because she's lost so much already#they always want to separate her from the family she has and the family she's built in some way#and it's like they succeeded here - it has already happened - she's taken from Süleiman the only other person she could latch onto and from#her child she was going to have from SS that would show that she was actually going to keep on that she can't be separated from her family#*this time* not so easily but it's over it's done it seems so let her go to her mother and father at least let her return to them#let her reunite with them that's all she can have after she's already dead#after she's failed and the evil in the palace has seemingly taken over - in her E01 dream it was *they* who made her push forward#in order to commemorate them in the first place; she doesn't mention her sister tho even though she was there in the dream too#and I think that's because at this point Hürrem searches for protection for *help* and her parental figures can provide that to her#more than anyone else; namely they guided her in her dream mainly her mother so she goes first#it all also goes to show how her latching onto SS is a gradual process as she calls him only later#Ibrahim clings to life as embracing death would indeed mean losing absolutely everything completely#*fully* separating from his family he returned to found and reunited with after he wasn't sure about whether it's even possible#and what's more he has both his past and current family in front of him in the present; he can't let that go he *won't* let that go#so he urges his father and Niko not to leave him as in not to let him give up to help him in the fight he thinks he can still win#but he doesn't mention his mother namely because she isn't there in that picture she's fully gone and already symbolizes#a more distant past that wounds Ibrahim too much and he comes to want to evade as this ep is soon after#his scandal with Hatice; no wonder she appears in E44 and urges him to go home thus to go back as he wants to move on so badly#more subconsciously than even the usual#magnificent century#muhteşem yüzyıl#muhtesem yuzyil#hurrem sultan#ibrahim pasha

"i'm making a thread comparing daenerys targaryen and cleopatra to show how amazing dany is" well which is it, do you wanna show how amazing she is or compare her to cleopatra, because doing the latter is not the slay you think it is
#personal#'i am going to compare dany to someone who is best know exclusively for her relationship with men'#'and whose major contribution to history is being the last of her white colonizer dynasty who fucks up so bad'#'that not only is she the last of her line but the fuckup directly leads to her country not being able to be its own independent nation'#'until the 20th century even tho she died almost two thousand years ago'#like if you DO think dany's arc is gonna end like cleopatra sure i guess#but seems an odd choice for a 'dany on the iron throne' truther to take#(i know this seems mean about cleopatra but like......i am ambivalent at best towards the girlie you guys know that)#(there's like a hundred more interesting egyptian queens that i wanna talk about)#(rather than retreading the story of her lily white ass for the thousandth godforsaken time)#(and obviously when it comes to the conflict between her and octavian anyone who knows me knows who i'm picking)#also this is mostly just yet another vague about TB twitter not knowing shit and being dumb as hell#because this was obviously a TB account for some reason the algorithm seems determined to show me their nonsense#no matter how many times i mute and make it clear i barely wanna see ANY hotd/asoiaf takes#let alone something from 'team anti-feminism who can't read'

i've taken two different religious history courses in this semester and last semester and the demographics of them are so funny. because the first one it was like "catholics and methodists....and me" and this one is "catholics and mormons...and me"
#the shocking thing to me about taking these classes has been how little most catholics seem to know about protestantism. and these are#people interested enough in comparative religion to take these classes#it's also funny bc when we read this book about 19th century methodism a couple weeks ago some of my classmates were talking about#methodists like they are currently extinct. there were four of them in the last class i took. methodists are very real i promise you

i understand that the modern day segments are the thing that binds the assassin’s creed games together and that they’re essential to the story. but consider. they suck dick and balls.
#the most interesting it gets is with shbject 16’s conspiracy board and like that *is* interesting. but it’s also like. not ever commented on#in ac2 actively. and a lot of the actual conspiracy bits seem kind of like throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks?#this is not unsalvageable okay but the fact that it’s 1) by necessity the periphery of the actual interesting game we want to play and 2)#full of the blandest fucking guys imaginable not doing anything ever is like. why are we doing this.#the *concept*. of a centuries old conspiracy battle between the assassins and templars? fascinating! endless potential for how that’s gone!#the execution? a bit shite ain’t it.#the game’s strongest connective tissue is in the codexes and the tombs. like *that’s* interesting!#the way that we’re already in a historical setting but ezio himself is uncovering what’s history to him! these figures who are basically#myths! but they were real! and then that leaves a room to go well. if they were real. like ezio is.#then when ezio dies and becomes history he will be a myth too. but we *know* him!! we could know them!! it’s in knowing him that the tragedy#of history is cemented. that he is already a myth even as we play through his story.#but like these are not themes i think the game has picked up on existing or gives a shit about so. fuck it i guess.#this story happened a long time ago in a country far far away. you can’t save ezio’s family. because he never did.#but you can avenge them. only. you know his quest for vengeance for justice. however it might have tipped the scales to a better world for#a time? it didn’t change things forever. the war outlived him. it outlived his ancestors.#you know?

Okay so, I obviously am not even close to reading acosf but ive been seeing a lot of posts about it and nessian and it made me think about some stuff. Why is it that Nesta seems to trigger Cassian's insecurities in the intense way that she does, but none of the other inner circle member do? Like, his biggest insecurity is his bastardhood but hes fine with Rhysand calling him that when hes introducing him to Feyre because? hes doing it in a friendly way? I guess? Idk, i think if he cant handle Nesta calling him that when shes using it as a synonym for asshole then I dont he should be okay with Rhysand doing it in a 'friendly' way but whatever. Also sidenote about his introduction to Feyre, iirc one of them said some line about how all illyrian bastards are basically brothers but then Rhysand is also their brother in all but blood, so for a brief moment I got these crossed wires where I was like "wait, is Rhysand trying to claim bastardhood when he was not only not born out of wedlock but was born as the result of a bond ordained by god" and I dont think thats the case, I think "cassian and azriel share a kind of brotherhood through their bastardhood" and "rhysand, cassian and azriel are adoptive brothers" are supposed to be wholly seperate statements, although it is pretty weird how that line seems to imply that the former is the main reason that Cassian and Azriel are brothers, as opposed to the fact that they were raised together when they were children. very weird, but that might just be me
But lets get back to Cassian. Another thing he seems to be insecure about is the fact that he's a brute or seen as nothing but a brute, judging by the fact that thats something he brings up in that big monologue after Nesta and Eris' dance, but again, I feel like the rest of the IC lowkey treat him like hes a brute and kinda stupid even if theyre not outright saying it. And like, Im pretty sure Amren has outright said it. Not to mention that whole thing with him taking Mor's virginity which, she wanted to sleep with him because he was the strongest warrior which is technically complimentary, but I feel like it should have a similar impact to the overtly negative brute-insults because its similarly putting a lot of emphasis on his physical strength and kindof dehumanizes him (not to mention the fact that its pretty racist, both in-and out-of-universe). Also, i dont think this was ever explicitly said in the text as the reason for why Mor picked him over Azriel, but doesnt it kinda feel like she picked Cassian because he was 'lower'? Like, obviously their backgrounds are quite similar with both of them being bastards but Azriel was the son of a nobleman while im pretty sure Cassian was from like a poor commoner family, and I could definitely see her picking him just to make sure shes thoroughly 'ruining herself' by having sex with someone she as the lowest of the lowest of the low, yknow? And like, even if thats not why she did it, these fuckers dont communicate and Cassian seems insanely insecure so I feel like he shouldve had the same process as I just had, and it shouldve affected their relationship negatively but thats not the case, Cassian is just like "no thoughts, head empty, pagelong internal monolgue about how beautiful and kind Mor is"
I was gonna write another paragraph about the illyrian racism but this post is getting kinda long and I think you've gotten my point by now: the ic can do whatever they want with things that touch on Cassians insecurites and he will not care and continue sucking up to them with nary even a second thought, but if Nesta even exists in his vicinity, it ticks him off so badly. And why is that? Because...... she has rich person-vibes? i guess? Thats it, its just vibes. And Im not the first person to point this out, but the text is really trying to make nessian seem like this rich lady/poor boy dynamic and like Cassian is punching up because "Nesta is like a queen" and its like, yeah, emphasis on the 'like' there because shes not actually a queen and she doesnt hold any power over this guy!!
#sjm seems pretty obsessed with this concept of the two people making up a couple being 'equal'#like thats what the mating bond is based on according to the suriel#some sense that the two bonded ones are magically equal#and i feel like thats pretty much all shes basing 'equality' on in this context#when its like#no thats obviously not all because cassian and rhysand and lucien are centuries old!!#you cant make up for that kind of gap in life experience by just being like 'well technically the archeron sisters are more powerful#and/or have rarer powers' who cares!!#theyre not gonna be able to use them as effectively as these guys whove had centuries of time to train with them#when theyre fucking twenty with powers that they got two years ago max#thats a massive power imbalance right there not to mention all the shit that life experience is important for#anti acotar#anti sjm#anti nessian

Me wondering why my cat and i have spent pretty much all day in my winter bed blanket and pillow nest and kinda shivering when I’m outside of it, checks my weather app

Oh. That would do it
#emma posts#listen. I love Minnesota but damn#some days I’m like ‘do we HAVE to have a competition with Antarctica?’#I know it’s global warming fucking with weather patterns#we didn’t use to get this this often#we also didn’t get as many summer droughts and temperatures in the 100s often#one of those things can give me seizures and it’s actually not the cold#lakes my beloved is fucking die without you#what good is enough snow to do outdoor activities if you would freeze too quickly#last winter it was too warm and dry and when we did get precipitation it was freezing rain#global warming fuckery#still. I at least don’t have to worry about seizures from stepping outside 👍#and it’s actually pretty when we have snow#the other night it was warm enough to snow and we got these huge flakes that looked all sparkly like big glitter chunks#and full moons on the snow are gorgeous#I don’t hate winter tbh. I just get cranky about extreme weather happening so often#for a variety of reasons from climate activism history to it just sucking ass#we used to only get days like this once every couple of years#now it seems like it’s either this cold or too warm for real winter#my family signed up for a certain kinda weather when they immigrated here a century ago#and this wasn’t exactly it. at least not this frequently#I’m just glad buildings have better insulation and weather proofing now#the farm house was bad enough before my parents remodeled over the years#you can still feel cold when it gets like this though#but I’m actually at my apartment right now and it’s usually a bit warmer because of everyone’s body heat and it being brick#my window here does have a break in the seal somewhere though#I’ve got six pillows. one of those chair back type pillows. and three blankets plus my cat right now#i would turn up the heat more but my cat and I don’t want to leave my bed#I should put socks on#thanks grandma for making me a pair of really thick pajama pants for winter

Hatice and Ibrahim have never been more divided from each other up to that point than in E43-E44. While Hatice always sensed when Ibrahim was actually in danger or she's lost him in any way (i.e. E35 when she felt something in Edirne while Ibrahim was with Nigar), nothing came up when he was shot; he didn't even tell her what happened to him until she found out herself; they were seperated while he was recovering; the wait for Ibrahim to come back felt like an eternity to Hatice and she went through several breakdowns at once (and his carriage was right in front of her but she couldn't see him, her only thought until the very end was that he was dead, isn't that what her dream with the "crying" statues meant?); when he came back she wasn't allowed to spend at least some time alone with him as SS wanted to talk to him; even their sleep was interrupted. The only thing that Ibrahim asked Hatice to do was to play him his mother's song on the violin (I like to think that Hatice started learning the violin in order to become closer to him, to who he is, to his past again after what they went through with little Mehmet).... but he no longer associates even that with Hatice anymore.
#not even gonna mention Ibrahim being gone while Hatice was giving birth in the end of E44#as that is the culmination of all the separations that accumulated throughout E43 and 44#and I already pondered a little on what it meant in my “Ibratice and the losses of a child” meta#oh funny story this was supposed to be a post about Hatice saying they're bringing Ibrahim's corpse when the carriage appeared#as that is likeeeee oh my godddd the *FORESHADOWING*; she was even shrouded in green again too!!!! (lighter green but still!!!!)#but then I saw that this was just the Bulgarian dub again and the English subtitles translate it as something else entirely#which didn't seem like what Hatice actually said either but since I can't make out some of the OG words at all and there aren't#English subtitles under the Turkish videos of E44 I decided not to risk it#anyway goodness how much did Yakup's prophecy terrify Hatice#she really can't see anything *but* death at this point and how *won't* she when all her feelings always turn out to be correct?#(except the statues of course but due to the rest of the bad events they can't do anything *other* than feed Hatice's fear)#this is why Hatice fearing so much about Ibrahim's life isn't merely a matter of obsession but I digress#thing is Ibrahim was *actually* ready to *die* for once wanting his mother to *take him* in that dream#(parallel to Hürrem's E01 dream of course)#as he's lost the rest of his past (that's in the present) already; he's really been defeated hasn't he?#the only person left is his mother he barely finds as he's already lost her long ago both metaphorically and literally#but he finds her and he symbolically finds her in Nigar; this is what “home” means to him now and his look at Nigar after he woke up#is what made him realize it; Hatice is too far behind; close yet so out of reach while Nigar only seems closer and closer#so he goes after her to chase that “home” he got lost in but “home” isn't what he once knew anymore#(Nigar's tear falling on Ibrahim's cheek *is* an artistic device signifying love tbf)#magnificent century#muhteşem yüzyıl#muhtesem yuzyil#hatice sultan#ibrahim pasha#ibratice#hatibo#(also in the tags)#nigar kalfa

Inspector Morley, Late of Scotland Yard, Investigates: The Case of the Scarlet Letters (1.3, WGN-TV, 1952)
"Mr. Mullins, I have in my possession sixty-eight letters, none of which has begun to outlive its usefulness. I'm quite prepared to admit that blackmail is risky, but then murder has its disadvantages too - that is why I gave up murder."
#inspector morley late of scotland yard investigates#inspector morley late of scotland yard#(there's some confusion about the correct title of this series; it appears onscreen with 'investigates' but many online sources omit the#final word and it wouldn't be unique in having a title screen that differed slightly from the official name of the show; either way it's a#hell of an unwieldy name for your programme.....)#classic tv#1952#john gilling#victor m. gover#tod slaughter#patrick barr#tucker mcguire#leonard sharp#another rediscovered gem made available by the good folks at kaleidoscope#oof. ok. so the story of Inspector Morley is complicated and still semi mysterious (the show is 70 years old after all‚ there's precious#little surviving documentation). as far as it goes‚ this was a UK production intended for sale to the BBC (there existing no independent tv#company in 1952). the beeb‚ for whatever reason‚ passed on the series. 13 episodes had been made and of these about seven were cobbled#together into feature films to recoup some of the costs; those survived and saw occasional outings on rainy afternoon tv schedules here#it was thought that the remainder were junked‚ but research (not my own i hasten to add) has revealed that the whole series was in fact sol#to the US where it was shown on WGN (a Chicago based station i believe). when kaleidoscope recovered this particular episode some 6 or 7#years ago‚ it was thought to be the sole surviving episode‚ at least in its original format (ie. not edited into a feature). actually it#sounds like they might all exist and a few are even on youtube (including this one). this is very early detective tv and it shows its age#not just in its ropey visuals (it's all quite soft and fuzzy) but in its very old fashioned shape and design‚ which is closer to mid#century film than what television would shortly become. that sensation is only furthered by the presence of the immortal Tod Slaughter‚ a#bastion of early british cinema and one of the first horror icons the uk ever produced. unusually‚ it seems like he starred in most (if not#all) of the episodes of the series; unusual bc he plays the villain‚ opposite Barr's staunch ex copper Morley. having a recurring villain#must certainly have helped when editing the shows into films for cinema release but it was quite a strange choice for tv#tho perhaps a set cast reduced costs (this was clearly a budget production‚ tho it does feature some impressive early location shooting)#Slaughter is great fun‚ in full scenery chewing mode as the wicked and unrepentant mastermind behind all sorts of crimes#Barr even has personal beef with him‚ though it would require seeing the other eps to fully understand it i suspect

"of course a book written more than a century ago is not going to be in line with contemporary values" well skill issue. witbd continues to be more progressive than most opinions i hear from people around me
#that's a joke.#but some people seem to think that feminism was invented in 21th century or something#no 'everyone' didn't 'think like that' 'back then'#if you claim to be aware of the features of time you have to acknowledge all the emancipatory ideas&movements that arose in that time!#and that the reactionary author you are reading was in fact reactionary#unless you are like talking about plato. but i mostly see people talking like that about books written like at most two hundred years ago.#chernyshevsky posting

"Two and a half years ago, when I was asked to help write the most authoritative report on climate change in the United States, I hesitated...
In the end, I said yes, but reluctantly. Frankly, I was sick of admonishing people about how bad things could get. Scientists have raised the alarm over and over again, and still the temperature rises. Extreme events like heat waves, floods and droughts are becoming more severe and frequent, exactly as we predicted they would. We were proved right. It didn’t seem to matter.
Our report, which was released on Tuesday, contains more dire warnings. There are plenty of new reasons for despair. Thanks to recent scientific advances, we can now link climate change to specific extreme weather disasters, and we have a better understanding of how the feedback loops in the climate system can make warming even worse. We can also now more confidently forecast catastrophic outcomes if global emissions continue on their current trajectory.
But to me, the most surprising new finding in the Fifth National Climate Assessment is this: There has been genuine progress, too.
I’m used to mind-boggling numbers, and there are many of them in this report. Human beings have put about 1.6 trillion tons of carbon in the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution — more than the weight of every living thing on Earth combined. But as we wrote the report, I learned other, even more mind-boggling numbers. In the last decade, the cost of wind energy has declined by 70 percent and solar has declined 90 percent. Renewables now make up 80 percent of new electricity generation capacity. Our country’s greenhouse gas emissions are falling, even as our G.D.P. and population grow.
In the report, we were tasked with projecting future climate change. We showed what the United States would look like if the world warms by 2 degrees Celsius. It wasn’t a pretty picture: more heat waves, more uncomfortably hot nights, more downpours, more droughts. If greenhouse emissions continue to rise, we could reach that point in the next couple of decades. If they fall a little, maybe we can stave it off until the middle of the century. But our findings also offered a glimmer of hope: If emissions fall dramatically, as the report suggested they could, we may never reach 2 degrees Celsius at all.
For the first time in my career, I felt something strange: optimism.
And that simple realization was enough to convince me that releasing yet another climate report was worthwhile.
Something has changed in the United States, and not just the climate. State, local and tribal governments all around the country have begun to take action. Some politicians now actually campaign on climate change, instead of ignoring or lying about it. Congress passed federal climate legislation — something I’d long regarded as impossible — in 2022 as we turned in the first draft.
[Note: She's talking about the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Act, which despite the names were the two biggest climate packages passed in US history. And their passage in mid 2022 was a big turning point: that's when, for the first time in decades, a lot of scientists started looking at the numbers - esp the ones that would come from the IRA's funding - and said "Wait, holy shit, we have an actual chance."]
And while the report stresses the urgency of limiting warming to prevent terrible risks, it has a new message, too: We can do this. We now know how to make the dramatic emissions cuts we’d need to limit warming, and it’s very possible to do this in a way that’s sustainable, healthy and fair.
The conversation has moved on, and the role of scientists has changed. We’re not just warning of danger anymore. We’re showing the way to safety.
I was wrong about those previous reports: They did matter, after all. While climate scientists were warning the world of disaster, a small army of scientists, engineers, policymakers and others were getting to work. These first responders have helped move us toward our climate goals. Our warnings did their job.
To limit global warming, we need many more people to get on board... We need to reach those who haven’t yet been moved by our warnings. I’m not talking about the fossil fuel industry here; nor do I particularly care about winning over the small but noisy group of committed climate deniers. But I believe we can reach the many people whose eyes glaze over when they hear yet another dire warning or see another report like the one we just published.
The reason is that now, we have a better story to tell. The evidence is clear: Responding to climate change will not only create a better world for our children and grandchildren, but it will also make the world better for us right now.
Eliminating the sources of greenhouse gas emissions will make our air and water cleaner, our economy stronger and our quality of life better. It could save hundreds of thousands or even millions of lives across the country through air quality benefits alone. Using land more wisely can both limit climate change and protect biodiversity. Climate change most strongly affects communities that get a raw deal in our society: people with low incomes, people of color, children and the elderly. And climate action can be an opportunity to redress legacies of racism, neglect and injustice.
I could still tell you scary stories about a future ravaged by climate change, and they’d be true, at least on the trajectory we’re currently on. But it’s also true that we have a once-in-human-history chance not only to prevent the worst effects but also to make the world better right now. It would be a shame to squander this opportunity. So I don’t just want to talk about the problems anymore. I want to talk about the solutions. Consider this your last warning from me."
