In a shaded urban landscape by a carpark were these clumps of Iris foetidissima (stinking iris, gladden, gladwyn, roast beef plant, scarlet-seeded iris, stinking gladwin). In winter this evergreen perennial has large pods which open to reveal bright orange-red seeds. The leaves can look rather tatty but the seeds persist through the winter providing a display.

These pods are full of promise, awaiting the right time to release their seeds to the world. They’re a reminder that even the most curious shapes in nature have a purpose.

The seedpods of Papaver somniferum (opium poppy) are a great decorative feature after the flowers are over. They can remain in the garden or be used in a floral display either fresh or dried.
