my pet peeve this morning is how everyone on tiktok is treated as an influencer or an influencer in making for even the most simple of videos. like on a video of someone accidentally scaring their friend someone in the comments will be like "we HAVE to see the best friend now 🤣" no tf you dont? you don't HAVE to see anything. it's a funny video and now it's over. there's always this entitlement to "another video please!!!! another another!!!" and it'll be on someone's page that isn't trying to be entertaining for billions of people

The other thing I immensely love about Bartimaeus of Uruk is how inhuman he is. Usually in media authors tend to "humanise" inhuman characters, by giving them stable human appearance or/and character traits. This vampire is actually a 17yo guy. This devil is a 30yo man. This magical god is a always teenage girl and they act accordingly. This is an easy route. Johnathan Stroud doesn't chose it.

Bartimaeus is not a woman but nor he is a man (even despite using he/him pronounce primarily it is canon all spirits are genderless out of nature, some just stend to stick more to one gender than the other). Sure he is not a "child" but nor he is an "adult", because he was never a human in the first place and was never fully presented as either of this. He doesn't devide love in platonic and romantic and doesn't feel a need to clarify. He struggles to explains the way he thinks and difficult for it to translate it to a human reader. He doesn't act as someone of a particular age in "human" understanding as well. He knows thousands of languages and switches between them. He loves humanity and yet still has an unique outside perception of it because he's not a human. He doesn't fit in any of human boxes to check, he's everything and nothing at once. He can look an act of any age or gender or feeling and perhaps fit none of those in your mind.

And this gives so much freedom for creating and fanfiction. Go on make him a young adult college student! Make him a middle aged man who has thousands of jobs! Make him a fourteen year old Ptolemy's twin! Create an AU where he as an anger or a cupid or an ageless God and none of it would be OOC to him! Human!Bartimaeus can be a traveler, a performer, a coffee shop barista, a hired killer! Perhaps don't make him a human at all, what If he is a tired cat who Kitty feeds on her way to work in a shop?

The possibilities are endless because instead of being a human with some cool flashing eyes and superpowers he is not actually a human. He's Bartimaeus of Uruk and that's it.

Stenography 101

My court reporting professor is actually very amazing. All of my classes are live, over Zoom, so I’ve not actually met her - or any of my classmates, even though three of them live in town and three of us have a text group - but the impact of her amazing support and personality has been very obvious on us, as a class. We have a group chat on WhatsApp where 20+ of us commiserate over every new concept in the theory we’re learning.

That said, she experienced a terrible loss last week and canceled one class but promised to be back the next day. (We meet three times a week.) Her returning so soon after is, of course, an absurd thought but I understand that people just want to maintain some sort of normalcy while grieving.

But as we all saw this notification over Canvas, and felt the impact of her news almost at once, my class hustled, collected donations, and sent this woman a giant flower arrangement with all of the add-ons we could find and afford. There was money left over from later donations for a second gift basket with care items, like gift cards for food delivery, so she wouldn’t have to worry about remembering to eat.

I offered to draw the card for that and already had this image in my mind. Took a photo of my machine and outlined it, then dove in to drawing these flowers from a reference bouquet. Which, honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever done before and wasn’t sure I could actually do.

(And y’all now that realistic stuff isn’t really my thing. But every now and then I have the patience for detail.)

I should say that I was greatly inspired by our professor fully committing to joining our class the day after her loss. Tears and all. She’d received her flowers and thanked us all, then wiped her eyes and moved forward with dictations for our final quiz of the semester.

This is just a drawing that I didn’t want to add words to, but I hope it brings some additional comfort and I hope she sees that it’s meant to relay our gratitude to her dedication to our success.

Court reporting schools and programs have something hovering around a 95% fail rate. I am only in my first semester of theory but we will have the same professor for all three theory semesters. Then off to speed building (the hounds), up to 225 wpm, where most people tend to give up.

I love the machine and learning a very detailed, even if a bit stroke intensive, theory that makes sense to my puzzle-loving brain, but at some point in the future, I know we will all just be hanging on for dear life.

Til then, I will be sprinkling this new love of mine into my little collection of sporadic thoughts here.

I can't stop imagining the alternate timeline where the EU did to Facebook what the US tried to do to TikTok. "Meta has to share its full proprietary software with our government, or sell to a European company" lmao can you imagine

Like EU and some others did some regulations on privacy and social media. As they should have, and as we should have here. And Zuck is still crying about it, as he should be. Notably, neither FB nor TT is banned in the EU, and while ByteDance hasn't made much noise about complying over there, Zuck is crying to drumpf to pressure the EU to lay off.

But anyways we can't do any of that here. Why?

Because any privacy regulations or social media regulations will affect our own data-farms. Because those data-farms are important to our government. Because Meta and Shitter freely share that data with our government.

The problem was never 'companies shouldn't have your data' because the US government is fully in favor of companies stealing and profiting from that data. We do it constantly!! Around the globe!! That is literally what Meta DOES.

The problem is our government isn't the one profiting, and that's what's not allowed.

my hobby rn is the jirai kei side of tiktok, those 'jiraimaxxing' accounts are so ... weird and also so funny bcuz they are so laaaame. like ... u rlly out there making edits and putting lil kids (ive seen one here one was 13 TT ) on the 'bad jirai' side and then putting only jp jirai BUT they sneaks themselves and their friends in so it's jp jirai and poof ! three or four western jirai ( •~• )

but more generally jirai tok is so funny between just regular gals that dress in jirai kei, thoses jirai maxxer, the racist jirais that spend all their time trying to explain why they said the n-words x10 in a disc server, and of course the subculs that get harassed for using jirai kei tags, and like the 1000 dramas they have everytwo weeks (jean jirai, lifestyle jirai vs jirai kei ect... )

It’s genuinely depressing watching people rooting for the tiktok ban on tumblr. “Yes get rid of the misinformation pipeline!” as if I wasn’t lowkey tracking black salve facebook groups or the weird urine cults on Twitter 10 years ago. Misinformation and the algorithms that feed it to you were not invented by tiktok and they will not go away just because the gov has shut down a single app.
