I made a giant estradiol model. The atoms are to scale relative to each other, and are 3d printed in half spheres and then CA glued together. The bonds are made of stainless steel rods, which are CA glued in. In total, there are 88 3D printed parts, and ~50 steel rods.

list of things that are holy:
standing on a cliff in the wind and listening to the ocean smash itself against the rocks
the hush of an old bookstore
waking up extra early to drive out to the country and watch the sun rise
spinning and spinning and spinning to music that’s probably too loud at three am
being surrounded by a flock of ravens on the steps of a church
speeding down the freeway with the windows down
letting the rain pour down all around during a thunderstorm

Oh lol so while I’m here speculating about character motivations
I’m now up to Rogue Protocol in my Murderbot re-listen, and when Don Abene is grilling MB about who it is and who sent it, just after they met, it tells her that it has been investigating a possible connection between GrayCris and alien remnant mining on Milu. And then Don Abene goes « ah, this begins to make sense » and basically drops the subject. Later, she implies that she has known for a while that « Rin » is a big fat lie and that MB is here alone.
My theory is: we know that by this point, new stories have already started going out about Dr Mensah’s loose rogue SecUnit. Dr Mensah of Preservation, which is in the middle of a legal battle with GreyCris about alien remnants and murdering people. There is no way she doesn’t know about this legal battle, since she is tasked with assessing a former GreyCris planet. Her mission briefing must have mentioned their current legal trouble as part of the assessment of the corporation.
The loose rogue SecUnit part is fairly new, but if she had been following that developing story at all, then she definitely would have known about it.
So my theory is that when the definitely sus SecUnit who just showed up, saved her life, befriended her bot, immediately started antagonizing her security team AND is obviously lying thru its teeth mentioned investigating alien remnants, she must have connected a few dots and came to the conclusion that there can’t be that many loose SecUnits around and that one is definitely Mensah’s. Lol.

SecUnit, I love you (not in a weird way). You're just so - going through it
You're just so anxious, and nervous, and trembling, but also fuck I'm going to kill the corporate bastards
I love you. And Preservation and Tarik because fuck I am also going to kill the corporate bastards.
And I love Mensah and Ratthi and AdaCol2 and Miki and Sec2.0 and Rin and her, and vi, and him and they and ti. I love the polycules and the moms and dads and parents and guardians and media. And do you want to watch media?
SecUnit. I don't know if Martha Wells will write more about you. (The story pacing and my experience with other media says she will). But I want to read more about you. SecUnit, I love you. And I would consult you for security and media.
Anyway. I'm sad I hurried and tried to read diary 7 in a day. Everyday, I reconsider rereading All systems red. 35000 hours of media. Your diaries are like my Sanctuary Moon. My favorite line is when you say fuck. I know, very human and stupid. But I'm human and stupid.
SecUnit. I wish I could watch Sanctuary Moon. I wish I could have your annotations on every episode of Sanctuary Moon. Anyway, anyway, anyway, anyway.

ARTの"恒久アーカイブ"にはすでにたくさんのマーダーボットについてのデータが詰まってるんだろうな〜という確信があります
I am convinced that ART's "permanent archive" is already filled with a lot of data about Murderbot!
[クッション付きの椅子の上で丸まって充電サイクルに入る警備ユニット.mov]
[SecUnit curled up on a cushioned chair and be in a recharge cycle.mov]
[サンクチュアリームーンを観る警備ユニットの横顔.mov]
[Profile of SecUnit watching Sanctuary Moon.mov]
[形態変更手術のあと、シャワールームでせっけんの匂いになった自分の身体を興味深そうに嗅ぐ警備ユニット.mov]
[SecUnit sniffing its soapy body in the shower after altering surgery.mov]
こねこの成長記録か????
Records of a kitten's growth????
各ボット/構成機体たちの恒久アーカイブ、何入ってるのか考えるのは楽しいですね
It's fun to think about what's in each bot/construct's permanent archive!
ミキの恒久アーカイブとか‼️
For example, Miki's Permanent Archive ‼️
リン警備員の欄に、「はじめてのボットの友だち :)」と書いてある。
In the Security Consultant Rin section, it says "My first bot friend :)".
3号の恒久アーカイブには失ったふたつの同僚の警備ユニットのことが入ってるかな?
I wonder if the permanent archive of 3 includes the two colleague SecUnits it loses?
恒久アーカイブってなに
What is a permanent archive…
エーペックスレジェンズのパスファインダーが「思い出フォルダ(memory files)」の話をしていたので、そのようなものかな〜とは思ってるんですけど
I'm wondering if it's something like that, since Pathfinder from Apex Legends talked about "思い出フォルダ(memory files)".
うれしかったことや大事なこと、残しておきたいこと、すぐに思い出すべきことを優先的に詰めておくような
A folder what it can prioritize the things that made it happy, the important things, the things it want to keep, and the things it needs to remember right away.
つまり、マーダーボットはペリ呼びを大事なことで忘れたくない残しておきたくない、いずれ使う時にはすぐに思い出すべきことだと思っているということ?
Does that mean that Murderbot thinks the pet name "Peri" is important and something it doesn't want to forget and should be reminded of immediately when it eventually uses it?
そうだが?
YES?
うわ〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜 それって𝓛𝓞𝓥𝓔じゃないんですか?
OH〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜 ISN'T IT 𝓛𝓞𝓥𝓔?

Rogue Protocol
Author: Martha Wells
Series: Murderbot Diaries (#3)
Rating: 9/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Goodreads: 4.26/5
Date Read: 2022, December 2023
"Somewhere there had to be a happy medium between being treated as a terrifying murder machine and being infantilized." -----------------------------
Plot Summary: Murderbot can't ignore the elephant in the room any longer. While it has been investigating it's history, Dr. Mensah the woman responsible for it's safety is under scrutiny for the disaster of the planetary expedition that started this journey and the subsequent disappearance of Murderbot. Feeling strangely... sentimental for the scientist Murderbot decides to do some reconnaissance on the company that attacked the peaceful scientists to gain evidence to help Dr. Mensah. The SecUnit finds itself once again embroiled in an adventure way more complicated and dangerous than it ever wanted! Seriously! How hard is it for a SecUnit to find some peace and quiet to watch all this new media!
TL:DR: Seeing Murderbot struggle between it's internal desire to hide away and watch media forever and help humans with a death wish is just as fun the third time as it was the first time. This time around we get a clear glimpse into Murderbot's internal moral compass even though it claims to have none. The space adventures continue and the battle between corporate greed and individual humans good intentions is front and center.
Characters:
Murderbot/Consultant Rin - Once again stepping into the made up identity of security Consultant Rin, Murderbot spends this story wrestling with a mess of 'emotions' regarding Dr. Mensah, the new humans trying to expose the crimes of GrayCris and this annoyingly innocent human-form bot Miki that won't take a hint that Murderbot does not want to be friends!
Miki - a human-form bot who serves as the assistant to Don Abene in their investigation into the terraforming platform abandoned by GrayCris. Miki has never been mistreated like most other androids and because of that is extremely naive and innocent to the reality of the world. It is very curious of the world around it especially the amount of distrust Murderbot displays. Extremely dedicated to Don Abene and her safety.
Don Abene - part of a contracted team looking into the abandoned terraforming platform, she investigates shady activity with her trusty human-form bot Miki. From her treatment of Miki it is clear Don Abene respects robotic and android life forms and she is determined to pursue truth and expose crime.
Thoughts and Feelings: I feel like a broken record sometimes going on about how good these stories are, but they honestly are just high quality fun stories the entire way through. One of the most enjoyable aspects of these books is the slow progress of Murderbot facing and accepting humanity and what it means to be regarded as a person. Despite it's initial insistence on not being a person, Murderbot slowly starts to behave more and more person like. Most obviously through it's thoughts and considerations of the humans around it and the Preservation team that it left behind. Murderbot will never get rid of the silent (or not so silent sometimes) disdane for humans propensity for making stupid and violent decisions, but it finds itself drawn to protect them again and again. Particularly in this book Murderbot is introduced to Miki, a human-form bot that Murderbot massively pities when they first meet. Miki is sweetly innocent, believing the best of Murderbot and all of the other humans on the investigation team. Miki's owner and caretaker, Don Abene truly loves Miki and treats it like part of the family. This is a foreign concept to Murderbot who finds it impossible that a human being could actually truly care for an android. Murderbot leaves its interactions with Miki massively changed.
The continuous character growth of Murderbot is the strongest aspect of these stories.

For the ficlet ask game: Murderbkt & ART, 10!
[This is low, even for you.]
[I have no idea what you are talking about.]
[That's a lie, and not even a good one.] ART was capable of incredibly intricate lies when it wanted to put the effort in, so the fact that this one was so incredibly transparent suggested it hadn't even cared enough for that.
ART huffed. (Or did the feed equivilent of huffing). [Could you attempt to be more specific?]
I brought one of my visual inputs into our shared feed space, showing a live-feed jam packed hall filled with all sorts of academic humans and academic bots doing academic things. [There.]
[Yes, our humans are attending a conference. I thought you had paid a modicum of attention during the security briefing.] Yes, that was sarcasm.
It was going to try and drag this out of me. Fine.
There were over 700 humans in attendance of this conference. In this shot alone, 31 were visible, not to mention all the bots, display panels, advertisements, and science posters. While ART's image processing was definitely up to the task, it was playing dumb, so I highlighted the key human in a red outline. [You arranged for Don Abene.]
There was a 0.02 delay. [Don't be ridiculous.] Before I could respond to tell it how not ridiculous I was being, it continued, [She is a planetary survey expert, in an adjacent field to both your own humans and my own crew. I did not need to arrange for her to be here. She was invited on her own.]
I scowled.
Dr. Arada was standing a couple feet away, munching on some form of starchy food in a supposedly science-themed shaped that one of the science-booths had given her for unknown science reasons. She said, "SecUnit, are you alright?"
"Yes, fine." But I had frozen in the middle of the foot-traffic path, and people were pushing past me.
[You should go and say hello,] ART suggested. [Based on what you have told me, you rescued the majority of her team.]
[Not all of them.]
[No.] ART's tone went unusually gentle. [But most. And she offered you a job position afterward. All evidence suggests that she was appreciative.]
More people went past, some jostling and hitting me. I hated that; it was the worst part of packed public human spaces like this. Either I had to start moving, or get out of the way.
I started moving.
It was like my feet had developed free will of their own. Traitors.
But they carried me through the crowd, down the row of booths, turning left. Within less than a minute, I was only a couple of feet away from Don Abene. I turned to the nearest poster and pretended to be really engaged in the topic of mineral deposits or whatever. She didn't notice me.
At least, at first. But then maybe something had caught her out of the corner of the eye, or maybe ART had poked her in the feed or something, because she looked over at me.
Through a little drone I had poking out from my collar, I saw her expression. Puzzled, mostly. The expression of a human trying to place someone they couldn't quite recognise. Then it cleared, like clouds, replaced with an expression I couldn't identify.
Don Abene took a step towards me. In a soft voice, she said, "Excuse me... Security Contractor Rin?"
I shrugged. "Close enough. Yeah."
She smiled.

Rogue Protocol, Chapter 1
(Curious what I'm doing here? Read this post! For the link index and a primer on The Murderbot Diaries, read this one! Like what you see? Send me a Ko-Fi.)
In which Murderbot accidentally signs up for its actual job.
I have the worst luck with bot-driven transports.(1)
Its first journey was fine, nice and quiet and uninterrupted, but then Art happened, and as much trouble as Art was for MB, it misses it a lot.
The current transport is bot-driven, but it's carrying other passengers. Since MB doesn't want to raise any suspicions, it lists itself on the manifest with a different name from what it used on RaviHyral (Rin, not Eden) but still the occupation "security consultant". The bot transport decided that meant MB was its onboard security contingent for the ride, and now alerts MB when there's a problem. MB, for its part, "was an idiot and started responding" in the first place. It's what it was built to do, but it should have put up more resistance.
At first it was fine, and the people were pacified some when it made a copy of its media collection public and a lot of them spent a lot of time watching. But as the trip wore on, the passengers got into more and more elaborate entanglements. MB spends valuable media-watching time arbitrating instead.(2)
On the last cycle of the trip, everyone is somehow still alive, as MB heads into the mess to break up another fight. However, once it's taken the food utensil(3) being brandished as a weapon from one combatant, everyone in the room starts pointing and yelling about what they thought was happening.
MB, for its part, says it doesn't care.
Everyone shuts up.
MB reiterates they have six hours before docking, and then they can do whatever they want to each other.
The people start clamoring again to tell "Rin" what happened. It erases all memory of the details as soon as it gets out of the room.
They were all annoying and deeply inadequate humans, but I didn’t want to kill them. Okay, maybe a little.
MB has tolerated the human passengers' nonsense, partly because that's what it's used to, and partly because it feels a little bad for them. They've all signed twenty-year contracts on their labour, with a supposed payout at the end. It's a terrible deal, but everyone's aware that it's the best of a list of crap options for them. MB asked one of them, Ayres, if twenty years was measured by planetary standard, or the Corporation Rim Recommended Standard, or some other measure.
He didn’t know, and hadn’t understood why it mattered. Yeah, that was why I was trying not to get attached to any of them.(4)
MB would never have chosen this transport, but it was the only one going to the transit station it needs to get to Milu, a place outside the Corporation Rim. It had caught the first uncrewed transport out of the RaviHyral transit station, and from there, decided to check the feeds. It couldn't find much new, but there was an interview with Dr Mensah, from six cycles before. MB injects some feelings about hoping she and the other Preservation members were still safe,(5) before getting on to the analysis.
The investigation into GrayCris on the survey world was turning up something about a situation on Milu. So, MB decided to go investigate for itself, even though it thinks it knows what it will find. GrayCris wants alien civilization remnants, and the incident as described on Milu isn't quite what happened on the survey planet, but it IS suspicious as heck.
If MB can get Mensah proof of GrayCris's nefarious acts, the investigation might get heated. Maybe it would be enough to get the journalists to forget the rogue SecUnit. Maybe that would let Mensah to go back to Preservation where she'll be safe.(6) And, humans are typically very bad at covering their tracks.
So, MB had chosen at that station to go to the one transit station listed as having transport to Milu. Fortunately, it's also a hub for a number of other destinations, so it's neither suspicious nor a wasted trip either way. But, the one transport to HaveRatton was the one with the passengers.
Once MB is free of the fighting, it hides in its bunk until they're through the wormhole and it can pick up the station's feed. It wants to start looking for transport to Milu, and refresh its media. The latest show it started watching feels a little too close to the events of the survey planet with PresAux, but without a heroic SecUnit to save the humans.(7)
It turns to the transport schedules, but finds nothing to Milu, even in the next thirty cycles. It really wants to hurt GrayCris, and this seems the most promising lead. The Milu facility is listed with a floating population under a hundred people. Floating is good, people coming and going, but under a hundred is bad, because without a reason to be there, MB will face consequences if it's noticed, and everyone there will likely recognize a SecUnit.
MB checks the schedule for private ships, but still no listings… though there are a few ships with no listed destination, and one is just about the right specs to hold supplies for a hundred or so humans for a hundred or so cycles.(8)
The cargo ship had actually been scheduled to leave eighteen cycles ago, but had requested a hold. Six transports of varying sizes and points of origin were arriving on HaveRatton at the same time as my transport. The supply ship might have been waiting for one of those, if it was fulfilling specific cargo orders. It might have been waiting for a repair. To find out more, I’d have to ask in person.
=====
(1) I'm beginning to think I have to agree with it, if you count its luck with Art as "found a good friend, got into SO much trouble with its enabling and encouragement". (2) So rude of them to be humans, amirite? (3) Forks have got to be the greatest weapon of opportunity in existence, don't they? I can't think of forks without thinking of Kit Rocha's Mercenary Librarians, where they're a frequent weapon of choice for someone who will use whatever's to hand to get her point across. (4) Which is understandable. These people have locked themselves into good old modern indentured slavery. Getting emotionally attached means having emotional attachment to people you will never see again who will probably die horrible, painful deaths. (5) FRIENDSHIP! FEELINGS! It misses having humans it's safe to love. (6) The cartwheels MB has to do to justify expressing its love. It's so sweet. Terrifying, but sweet. (7) It's only been a couple of months and the investigation was probably not accurate, so it's not likely that the in-universe show is based on the in-universe events, though obviously if we twist to look at the author, Wells is making the direct comparison on purpose. I just think it's important to keep that sort of context in mind, because the strongest headcanons and theories are built on what you can know to be true, with the exclusion of that you know cannot be true, within the story. (I can highly recommend looking for the Watson and Doyle views of most situations in media, and comparing them. Watson is inside the story, Doyle is writing it, they have access to different information and will come to different conclusions based on it. Both have a lot of merit in evaluating things like "is this show based on MB's life".) (8) I can sense a road we're about to walk down, can't you?

This is a really neat roleswap fic — in which Dr. Ratthi is a rogue SecUnit and Rin is a grouchy ex-rimworlder with a mysterious past.
Let me just say: apotropiac, as a writer, knows what the fuck they are doing. I burn with envy reading their prose. It's just an absolute delight to read.
This fic does so much and is such a poster child for the strengths of fan fiction: the world and dynamics explored in this fic are a resonating echo and expansion of canon. The worldbuilding in this fic is both richly dark and piercingly hopeful. It's so much fun.

@secunit-rin replied to your post “I would like to report my brain has decided that I should listen to a song called "Ink" by The Mountain Goats. In my defense:...”
I wanted this to be real
Apparently, someone named "The Mountain Goats" has, on at least one occasion (I'm assuming?), composed music on a laptop whose default icon is a cat
I mean, it's still good music but still

ID (copied from alt): A digital drawing of Secunit, Don Abene, and Miki from Rogue Protocol. They're standing in a metal passageway, with streaked metal walls. Secunit holds Abene in its arms, with her head on its shoulder and her hand clutching its hoodie. Secunit, in the feed, says "Please, Miki, I just want to help." Abene looks down at Miki, saying "Miki...? Who is this?" Miki, a small robot with big round eyes, rests its hands on Don Abene's leg and foot, looking concerned and responding "Security Consultant Rin is my friend, Don Abene. I was asked not to tell you, to keep you safe." End ID PT: "Huh. That wasn't a lie, but it sure wasn't the truth, either."
