In the late 80s, Shinichi Kameoka was a mangaka for Monthly Shonen Magazine and Big Comic Spirits. His comics were influenced by Japanese yankī subculture, telling the stories of gangsters, baseball players, and underground boxers.

When serialization for these comics ended, he applied to Square as a graphics artist for Final Fantasy IV, but was relegated to debugging. However, his big breakthrough came in the 90s when Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana) began development, in which he was responsible for the iconic designs of the protagonists, as well as character pixel art.

From yankī manga, to Secret and Legend of Mana, to Magical Vacation/Starsign, to Egglia... His art style's come a long way hasn't it?

I wish I knew why I was so nostalgic for games I've played, like, once.

Something like Undertale, I can understand. But I didn't care for Secret of Mana or Final Fantasy V that much. That entire game is one big love letter to classic RPGs, from story to song. Yet, I hold them in high enough regard that hearing certain songs makes me cry pure nostalgic tears. I also cried when I beat Secret of Mana and, to this day, I'm not sure why. It was bad, but I wasn't happy it was over, per se. It was kind of a bittersweet feeling, I guess.

I dunno. My brain is wired weird.

A fun mtg YouTuber made a vid on the Final Fantasy set that’s coming up and made a joking reference to Legend of Mana as one of many references to rile up the FF ‘um actually’ fanboys (jokes on you I’m into that lol) and I was thinking.

Man, Mana would make for a good Magic set. It’s got:

Magic swords. Dragons. Magic schools. Beast people- Legend specifically has a kitty person who is not dissimilar to Mirri. There are gemstone people (this was waaaay before SU and that one 3d anime with the rock people) whose cores were sought after for magic power contained within- diamond reskins mayhaps? Karn could be Gaius. There’s fairies! Urza style magitech. Evil wizards. A big magic tree god. The same retinue of dnd fantasy monsters you’d expect from a jrpg. MANA for chrissake!

Do you see my vision wizards?! Fuck Final Fantasy boyband bondage aesthetics, give me a Mana set!

My experiences playing Secret of Mana ('18) having never played anything in the series yet:

"Oops, I just threw away that bandana instead of equipping it."

"This combat loop feels really stiff but it's the start of the game so I bet it gets refined over time. It is SNES design after all."

"Woah, ok. Kugimiya Rie's voice just poked something deep in my head."

"Oops, I just threw my bracelet away instead of equipping it."

"Will Primm select the attack animation that swings the monster away from my janky hitbox? Spin the wheel and find out!"

"Holy shit, will this co-op camera please let me see more thAN FIVE FEET IN FRONT OF ME PLEASE!?"
