The birth of Jaxon

Thursday, April 30, I started having contractions around 2:30. They were going between consistent and random, but staying the same strength. It was a decent strength though. Then my contractions got down to 3-5 mins apart for an hour and a half. I called Jeffrey and he came home from work and took us all to the hospital. They hooked me up to the monitors for about 45 mins, then they came around and checked me. For some reason, when I would lay down the contractions would die down and Jaxon would shift up out of my pelvis, but when I sat up he would engage again and my contractions would get stronger and faster. Anyway, I was about 5 cm dilated and 80% effaced and they left me there for an hour while they decided if they wanted to keep me. Later the Dr. came in and asked what I wanted to do, and of course I said stay!!  The baby sitter came and got Jasper from us so we could get things settled. We finally got to our room around 7 or 8 that night. We had one lady nurse and two navy men attending to our room. The nurse was in charge of me and the baby and the navy guys were in charge of the IVs, blood drawing, and doing random errands. The men were TERRIBLE at getting my veins and they went in super slow so it was very painful. They only wanted to draw from my hands and wrist for some reason. Between them and the lab messing up, I ended up having to give 6 vials of blood and was getting really cold and clammy. I do terrible with needles. 

They let me labor for a few hours but I wasn’t getting anywhere fast so they suggested that we break my water. I got an epidural, then an hour later they broke my water. (water broke around 10:30) The epidural was really good, It took away the pain, but I could still feel what my body was doing; I wasn’t completely numb. I felt my contractions, and I was also able to feel the pressure when it was time to start pushing. When I called the nurse back in and let her know that I thought it was time to push, she checked me and sure enough the baby was already traveling out! They did an excellent job of coaching me and really letting me be in control of the labor. They slowed me down right before the baby made his entrance and we did short easy pushes, maybe two seconds each and it prevented me from tearing! I was also very stretchy thanks to Jasper’s big head. Please don’t hate me for saying this, but I only did about 8 mins of pushing...

When Jason came out I had them lay him on my tummy and I was just able to enjoy him for a while. They took their time letting Jeffrey cut the chord and everything they did. After a little while I let them take Jaxon so they could get the baby stuff done. It was nice not to be rushed, the dr took her time getting me taken care of, unlike last time where the placenta was basically ripped from me. Over all it was a wonderful labor and delivery! They ended up having to ask me to recover in a different section of the hospital so that other people could give birth. I didn’t mind at all, but the nurses where they sent me had no idea how to take care of new moms and babies and it got very frustrating trying to deal with them. 

I’ve been feeling really good though! I can get up and walk on my own! I have the normal cramping pain, and It really hurts to pee... but compared to how it felt with an episiotomy, I feel wonderful! Nursing has been going well too. Jaxon doesn’t get frustrated as fast, and I’ve been a lot calmer now that I’ve had some experience. So far he is doing great with his latching and we are learning how to read his hunger signs. =)
