05~05~19: East London Vintage Kilo Sale

£2.50 entry + £14 for clothes

If you’ve never been to a kilo sale before, essentially how they work is you fill up a bag of clothes and instead of them being priced individually, you pay by the kilo. I think at this sale it was around £15 per kilo – it’s also worth remembering that just because it says ‘kilo’ in the title it doesn’t mean you have to buy a kilo. You just pay for the weight of your items. So, if you’re clever and realise that you’ll be able to pick up more lighter items for a kilo than heavier items, you could come away with lots of blouses and scarves for £1 or less each!

Embroidered floral cotton jumper

~Flowers have always been a visual source that I have referenced in everything from my photography and graphic design work to my wardrobe. I don’t really know why I have such a strong affinity with them, but I do know why I had to have this jumper. When you scour vintage stores or charity shops, it can be hard to find jumpers that aren’t super itchy. This beauty is made from cotton yarn so is an absolute dream to wear. Aside from that the design of the flower embellishments is just so pretty and I love how it continues onto the back.

Stripy 70s-esque jumper

~I get a lot of clothing inspiration from the seventies, and so this beige and white vertically striped jumper just felt like a classic seventies piece that I needed in my wardrobe.

Hand-painted skirt

~So, when I picked this skirt up the elastic waistband was not only too big but was coming apart. But I loved the fabric too much to leave it, so it became a project. I unpicked the old waistband casing and made a new one, inserting new elastic (who says A Level Fashion isn’t useful?). I love how it turned out, now I’ve just got to figure out how to style it.

11~06~19: the bag of dreams 

Embroidered-beaded purse £10.95 

~I’m writing this post a long while after buying this bag, but I still can’t get over how much of a bargain this was! It was on display in the Soho Beyond Retro and so naturally taking this into account, I thought that it would be at least £30. But when I opened up the bag and turned over the golden label, it was like a thrift-lovers version of winning the lottery! £10! 

~I did wonder if it had been priced wrong as the craftsmanship that has gone into the construction and embellishment of the bag indicates that it should be worth more. I clutched the bag tightly, not caring that I definitely shouldn’t have been buying anything else that month.

hi happy first of october 🍃 ••• second hand september is officially over. not buying anything new for a month is not very hard. i didn’t buy any new clothes and no stuff for the flat. did i experience any difficulties? no, of course not. ••• did you participate in #secondhandseptember ? being conscious about what we buy and how much we buy is very important. i normally don’t shop a whole lot on a monthly basis but i liked being more aware of it for a few weeks. ••• once again i’d like to add though that i am in a position where i can make these decisions easily: i can shop anywhere i want (be it retail or second hand) due to my size. i have no children or people under my care (who i might need to buy affordable, new items for), and i live in an area where second hand items are easily accessible. ••• we should not be shaming people who need to or, in many cases, are forced to shop at places like a dollar store, h&m, amazon. ••• this week has been a reminder that the tax system works for corporations and the ultra rich. let’s advocate for change in the way big corps can hoard money, create monopolies, and thereby force people into buying from them. ••• and if you’re privileged, like me, use that privilege to not shop or shop differently. i see a lot of people online advocate for change without addressing the importance of privilege and it annoys me.
