⏱Time for some history lesson!⏱ Since we have been introducing our hemp print collection for this past week, so why not learn about the pattern? Japanese in origin, this hexagon-based pattern is called “Asa-no-ha pattern,” and is a resemblance of a hemp leaf🇯🇵🍁 It has a SUUUPER long history. You ask, how long? 1200 years!! HEIAN PERIOD Asa-no-ha pattern was first seen in the adornments of Buddha statues in Buddhist art from the Heian Period (late 8c to late 12c). After 400 years, in the Edo Period (17c to mid-19c), the pattern started to appear on clothes. It was usually seen in children’s clothing. The Asa-no-ha pattern was used for children’s clothing with a hope that they grow healthy just like how the hemp plants grow fast, straight, and tall. It was also believed to keep the evil spirits away. This is only a brief historical background of the pattern, so I will post the more in-depth part of it on Story so come check it out! The reason I decided to use this pattern in my work was because 1) I love GEOMETRIES 2) to introduce old art form to this current time 3) hemp is highly versatile plant that can be processed into numerous things, and can take a very important role in sustainability. I really wanted to share the history with you on this pattern since I use them a lot for my products (and I needed a history lesson myself). Believe it or not, avocado gives pink as a dye🥑🥑 I get a lot of surprised reaction when I tell people at the market that the pink furoshiki & box tote are from avo dye. So, here's a quick recipe. 1️⃣ Cut up pits & skin into smaller pieces in order let the color come out faster. I cut the pits into quarters. 2️⃣ Simmer it for 50-60min. Don't let the water boil. 3️⃣ Let it sit overnight for deeper color. 4️⃣ Remove avo pieces. 5️⃣ Dip a fabric of your choice (try cotton). The fabric needs to be washed with soap and soaked in water for at least 1 hour prior to dyeing. 6️⃣ Let the dyebath simmer for at least an hour. 7️⃣ Let it cool in the pot. You can leave it overnight for deeper color. Natural dye isn't hard at all. TURMERIC SHIBORI BOX TOTE First step to soil-to-soil product. Took a piece of organic cotton 10oz canvas and made multiple pinch points to make the pattern. Then, soaked it in turmeric dye bath for 30min. Take off all the cordage, and there I had a perfect shibori patterned fabric. This tote has a front pocket, which is a vintage Japanese silk fabric I found at a local store here in Hilo. Sewn with cotton thread. This means all the parts of the bag except for the brand tag can go back to the soil after it wears out. 🔄Soil-to-soil product is something that is organic and natural that can be put back into the natural cycle when it no longer can be used.🔄 My next step would be to change the brand tag from poly to cotton! Passion for natural dye has grown in me this past month🧅🥑🏵 Dyeing ropes; I started teaching myself a new alley of handcrafting, which is macramé. It's just simply twisting, braiding & tying, but I find creating patterns through these process very calming+therapeutic. The techniques I have been learning through lei making is really paying off.
