We don't talk enough about Rhaenys's visual transformation and the symbolism behind it.
#house of the dragon#rhaenys targaryen#by which I mean - come into my inbox so we can talk about Rhaenys's visual transformation and journey#She's the only one who has a drastic change without either a change in her rank or marital status or just going through puberty#She goes from clear and definable roles: lady to warrior#Velaryon to Targaryen#Passive to Active#This is what I mean when I talk about the idea that the MEANING of “The Queen Who Never Was” changes over time#From something that speaks of her failure to something that signifies her ability#One can focus on “Never” and the other focuses on “Queen” and it's the secondary one that is her lasting legacy#When it's said by Baela and Corlys posthumously

what's your dissertation about? you mentioned it in the siltcord and i'm really interested
oh my god hey I'm so happy you're interested! broad strokes because I've only been working on it for a few weeks but: the current theme is 'resistant landscapes' (both man-made and natural) in the later writing of Shirley Jackson!
Essentially, my main thread is that Jackson had two parallel strands to her work, which as far as I can tell began kind of interrelated but then diverged quite significantly? She's probably best known now for The Haunting of Hill House and to a lesser extent We Have Always Lived In The Castle, which are these. weird surreal psychological horror novels, engaging explicitly or implicitly with the supernatural, and centred around introspective, strange and sometimes deeply misanthropic female characters from isolated social units with dysfunctional, possessive relationships to each other.
Aaaaand then on the other hand she was known for being a 'happy housewife' who wrote these whimsical, quasi-autobiographical stories about all her children and how hopeless her husband was. These were popular too. Betty Friedan called her out in landmark 1963 feminist manifesto The Feminine Mystique for essentially spreading patriarchal propaganda.
The interrelation between the two is really jarring, because in one family is a source of horror and tragedy and in the other it's a source of, like... laundry. And Jackson's home life wasn't everything those stories made it out to be-- her marriage was unfaithful, her mother could probably be fairly called emotionally abusive, and as I talked about on the siltcord, she developed severe agoraphobia which often left her housebound.
So, yeah. My plan is to explore the depiction of families as constructed social units in dialogue with the environments they are constructed in in that work. Obviously a lot of that is relation of house to family, in the context of which Hill House is especially rewarding to consider, but I also want to look at relationships with nature and urban environments (especially in the context of settler colonialism and how that has had an enduring legacy in Jackson's particular part of New England), xenophobia (largely in regard to class, though racism and anti-Semitism are presences in her writing), domesticity and the idea of the housewife, and how horror relates to All Of This. The ideal of making a home within a hostile environment and of that environment turning on you, essentially.
I don't yet have particular areas of focus within that broad umbrella, but I might update with bits and pieces about it as I work? I don't really talk about academic stuff on here but I am very much Critical Literary Analysis Guy and I do also post relentlessly about haunted houses as a concept so if people would be interested in it maybe I will
anyway if you've read this far I recommend Horror in Architecture: The Reanimated Edition (2024) by Joshua Comaroff and Ong Ker-Shing which is a book about how horror movie tropes can be mirrored in built environments! I'm reading it right now and it's conceptually fascinating plus fairlyyy comprehensible by academic standards (if a little dense) if you, like me, are a Fool who knows nothing of architecture. very good also for getting to look at pictures of some of the most Fucked Up Buildings (affectionate) you've ever seen.
#thank youuuu for asking this!! <3#I didn't want to hijack siltcord bookclub to talk about my academic work#at least in part because I think it's fun to read thohh blind#but it's my blog & I'll infodump if I want to#also holy shit morgan I think you just tricked me into writing up a more thorough plan for my dissertation than I did for my supervisor#so thank you??? this has been bizarrely helpful#fun fact I very very nearly ditched this idea to write about family/amatonormativity/happiness in the silt verses as my actual dissertation#but decided not to because I like my supervisor and didn't want to switch#and also there is essentially no secondary literature for tsv.#well. there is some genuinely excellent secondary literature#but it is all written by the same twenty or thirty very unwell people on tumblr dot com#and that's not usable because I can't cite it and refuse to use it without citing it#I'll still write that tsv paper some day tho. just for funsies.#dissertation posting#shirley jackson#the haunting of hill house#✨️#voices from beyond

For the next year, this is what Alexandra Mussar will call home: a cramped bedroom with water damage and dysfunctional sinks, in a house shared with six other students. For this, she's paying $840 every month. This isn't how she pictured her university housing experience, but after six long months hunting for somewhere to live, she says she felt she had to settle. "There were no other options. This was my last resort," she said. "It was either that or I was couch surfing for the next year." Across the country, students are sharing similar stories. The soaring rents that have hit some of Canada's biggest cities have also walloped college and university towns, with little relief in sight. Take Guelph, Ont., where the latest data shows the average cost for a one bedroom apartment has spiked to $2,095 per month in June, up 27 per cent from the same time last year. [...]

Putting my Favorite Characters in Hades Part 2: Hunter from The Owl House
Power description, Chthonic Companion, and a Better Look below:
okay this guys a lil different bc i see him like a mini boss that would show up at the fountain in Elysium starting after you beat Hades the “final” time. Sorta like how Hunter reacted to Luz saying the emperor was a lil bitch, he “wouldn’t believe” Zag actually beat Hades.
His powers would be similar to that shade in Tartarus that can teleport. However, after some dialogue Zag and him would build a relationship and you’d no longer have to fight him. Does that make any sense? Just making Elysium even worse than it is 🫡
Anyways, Hunter would stop fighting you and instead tell you fun facts about wolves and give you his homemade Chthonic Companion: Flapjack! I think it would be a timed session of like 5-10 seconds that how much damage you cause is proportional to how much health you get back.
Anyways, here’s a better look at Hunter! I gave him the cast crystal as part of the staff and covered him in that symbol to really show his dedication to the cause 🫡🫡
who should i do next?
#the owl house#toh hunter#hunter clawthorne#hunter noceda#hades style#hades supergiant#hades game#hades 2#hades#this guy was fun to do#i might do his secondary pose one day#also i listened to the underworld saga the entire time#it’s 3 songs#but is 6 hours of content if your not a coward#epic the underworld saga

Sorry, Rhaenyra, the way you did this was stupid. You got two riders, yes, but many potential riders died. In fact, what if none of these people had been up to Vermithor's standards and he had killed them all, even though they could have ridden other dragons?
#unless this thing had the secondary goal about cleaning up targ bastards - but there hasn't been any indication of that#house of the dragon#house of the dragon spoilers#hotd season 2#rhaenyra targaryen#vermithor

(mgv) house and wilson display courting behaviors and don't even realize it. granted, courting in that sense is out of style and traditionalist so even if they did believe they were doing it, they'd wrinkle their noses (house especially). but like.... house buying them expensive tickets to a thing is an opportunity to grow closer, wilson letting his food get stolen isn't just a show of patience but proof he can be a good provider, etc etc. the amount of times they get mistaken for a couple in omegaverse is, in turn, much greater than it already is in canon
#house md#hilson#i can imagine some people are more food aggressive naturally as it's an evolutionary trait#parents typically teach their kids not to bite if anything else should anyone reach for their food#but once they come into secondary puberty the instinct can return with a vengeance#so the 90% of the time that wilson doesn't even twitch as house steals half his lunch is a ->#sign of just how close they are AND how much wilson actually likes house#because food sharing is a love language no matter the au it's in real life it's oouguhhh#i've been on this rant before i know i have#and they (general public) don't even know how many times wilson brings dinner home too..........#“home” to house's place. even if wilson HAS A WIFE AND HIS OWN PLACE#and that's just canon. this show makes me sick (i am having a great time with house md)#mgv

as an artist who just wants to get to drawing the pretty clothes and is terrible at posing i am forever enamoured by your poses..... they have so much energy and movement!!!
was this via art study, a general knack for anatomy or do you just enjoy posing specifically? and do you have any tips?
(i was just wondering bc your pose work is always so dynamic :D (your lighting also slaps /pos))
this is one case where it's a secret fourth thing lol. I have never successfully studied a single thing in my life, I am not at all a naturally "gifted" artist (and as well I reject the idea altogether), and posing has never jumped out to me as its own task in drawing at all! the way I do anything art-related, and posing specifically, is a lot more mechanistic than how it's perceived I think; I've just assumed this came as a function of how narrative-forward I see art, and how much I focus on comic work.
what folks talk about as "posing" I usually think of in two terms: composition and character acting. composition is how the figures fit into the intended frame, and character acting is the actual motion that'll be portrayed. you can see how that logically works itself out! there are more words than stars in the sky written about composition already, I honestly don't think there's anything I can say that'd be more useful than words from artists like thomas romain. character acting is itself more a matter of writing than visual art to me; you've got a guy and they probably do things, you draw them do those things, that's really it. the rest of it is just, figuring out weights and accenting in a scene, shape language, line flow, discipline-specific stuff like that; since no matter what I'm drawing I always mentally think of it as a comic thing, I usually try to insist on the strong points of that medium, one of which is colloquializing shapes to imply the entirety of a movement through a single panel. I don't always succeed at this! I hope to do better in the future. but it's how I approach this matter.
I think sitting down with your art to think about like, how you're approaching it and what you're in it for would help with troubleshooting a lot of the times. it's helped me before! I'm a completely hedonistic artist, I don't draw what I don't want to draw. what is it exactly about posing that's giving you a hard time? is it something you can do without? usually it is. if it's the thinking up a pose part, you can copy poses from high fashion magazines and sewing pattern models and just photos you find. if it's the fitting a pose into a nice looking complete picture part, don't make it a nice looking complete picture, do it sketchbook style, collage a buncha stuff together. if you never want to think about posing ever again, that's what stock bases are for! make urself some or get some from an artist and just draw the nice clothes.
if ur committed to figuring out posing and wanna ease urself into it, I find prompt lists are pretty good for giving ur brain a ground to build on top of and start asking questions. it's also a good exercise to sit down before drawing a thing to ask urself what u want it to be like, genre-wise: is it gonna be a comic cover, or a family photo, or a professional photoshoot, etc. these things have their own visual languages, and keeping that in mind will direct u on how to frame and choose the movements for ur piece. or, if that's overwhelming, drawing characters running is always good! there's plenty of character acting involved in there, it shows off the physicality of the clothes nicely, and it's decently easy to frame.
(I am similarly mechanistic about pretty much every other aspect of drawing lol, lighting/shading included. fully a case of "if it looks alright I put it in, if it doesn't I don't do it". I still struggle with it every time I do colors, but what can ya do. if the piece asks for it that's what it'll get. thank you very much for the nice ask!)
#not art#ask#ngl when u mentioned in ur ask that u like drawing clothes but not the poses I immediately went that is in fact a whole discipline#that's fashion sketching! I don't Like that discipline because the point is the clothes (and also every mainstream example of it#is an artist drawing the thinnest skinniest most featureless figure ever lol) but art that is just about drawing clothes#definitely exists#I find generally keeping art modular is a good practice. most things in art you can fully do without#if you don't wanna do lineart you don't have to do lineart! if you don't wanna color you don't have to color!#nothing about drawing is an obligation. school is made up. don't make it unfun for urself!#you can't get good without getting comfy. honestly you don't even have to get good you can just draw for fun forever#''improvement'' is for people with somewhere to get to. if ur just hanging out sightseeing why hurry and miss the sight#I've said here before that I like giving characters clothes and usually that's read as ''I like drawing clothes'' but#there's a whole second half of that sentence folks seem to gloss over usually. which is ''I like drawing characters''#and honestly the ''clothes'' part is sequentially secondary to the ''character'' part. it's actually all character art to me lol#if u give me a featureless nothing base model to give clothes to I would not be able to do it. that means nothing to me#thats why knowing what ur up to with art is important I think. when u know what ur in it for u can focus ur search for materials#and references and tutorials etc. u can separate the art u like looking at and the art u like doing#and u know u don't have to feel all kindsa ways abt other people doing art that u like looking at but would have a Bad time making#hope this has been helpful at all! no refund if it hasn't sorry that's store policy. my house!
