what's your dissertation about? you mentioned it in the siltcord and i'm really interested
oh my god hey I'm so happy you're interested! broad strokes because I've only been working on it for a few weeks but: the current theme is 'resistant landscapes' (both man-made and natural) in the later writing of Shirley Jackson!
Essentially, my main thread is that Jackson had two parallel strands to her work, which as far as I can tell began kind of interrelated but then diverged quite significantly? She's probably best known now for The Haunting of Hill House and to a lesser extent We Have Always Lived In The Castle, which are these. weird surreal psychological horror novels, engaging explicitly or implicitly with the supernatural, and centred around introspective, strange and sometimes deeply misanthropic female characters from isolated social units with dysfunctional, possessive relationships to each other.
Aaaaand then on the other hand she was known for being a 'happy housewife' who wrote these whimsical, quasi-autobiographical stories about all her children and how hopeless her husband was. These were popular too. Betty Friedan called her out in landmark 1963 feminist manifesto The Feminine Mystique for essentially spreading patriarchal propaganda.
The interrelation between the two is really jarring, because in one family is a source of horror and tragedy and in the other it's a source of, like... laundry. And Jackson's home life wasn't everything those stories made it out to be-- her marriage was unfaithful, her mother could probably be fairly called emotionally abusive, and as I talked about on the siltcord, she developed severe agoraphobia which often left her housebound.
So, yeah. My plan is to explore the depiction of families as constructed social units in dialogue with the environments they are constructed in in that work. Obviously a lot of that is relation of house to family, in the context of which Hill House is especially rewarding to consider, but I also want to look at relationships with nature and urban environments (especially in the context of settler colonialism and how that has had an enduring legacy in Jackson's particular part of New England), xenophobia (largely in regard to class, though racism and anti-Semitism are presences in her writing), domesticity and the idea of the housewife, and how horror relates to All Of This. The ideal of making a home within a hostile environment and of that environment turning on you, essentially.
I don't yet have particular areas of focus within that broad umbrella, but I might update with bits and pieces about it as I work? I don't really talk about academic stuff on here but I am very much Critical Literary Analysis Guy and I do also post relentlessly about haunted houses as a concept so if people would be interested in it maybe I will
anyway if you've read this far I recommend Horror in Architecture: The Reanimated Edition (2024) by Joshua Comaroff and Ong Ker-Shing which is a book about how horror movie tropes can be mirrored in built environments! I'm reading it right now and it's conceptually fascinating plus fairlyyy comprehensible by academic standards (if a little dense) if you, like me, are a Fool who knows nothing of architecture. very good also for getting to look at pictures of some of the most Fucked Up Buildings (affectionate) you've ever seen.

For the next year, this is what Alexandra Mussar will call home: aĀ cramped bedroom with water damage and dysfunctional sinks, in a house shared with six other students. For this, she's payingĀ $840 every month. This isn't how she pictured her university housing experience, but after six long months hunting for somewhere to live, she says she felt she had to settle. "There were no other options. This was my last resort," she said.Ā "It was either that or I was couch surfing for the next year." Across the country, students are sharing similar stories. The soaring rents that have hit some of Canada's biggestĀ citiesĀ have also walloped college and university towns, with little relief in sight. Take Guelph, Ont., where the latest data shows the average cost for a one bedroom apartment has spiked to $2,095 per month in June, up 27 per cent from the same time last year. [...]

Putting my Favorite Characters in Hades Part 2: Hunter from The Owl House
Tumblr media
Power description, Chthonic Companion, and a Better Look below:
okay this guys a lil different bc i see him like a mini boss that would show up at the fountain in Elysium starting after you beat Hades the ā€œfinalā€ time. Sorta like how Hunter reacted to Luz saying the emperor was a lil bitch, he ā€œwouldnā€™t believeā€ Zag actually beat Hades.
His powers would be similar to that shade in Tartarus that can teleport. However, after some dialogue Zag and him would build a relationship and youā€™d no longer have to fight him. Does that make any sense? Just making Elysium even worse than it is šŸ«”
Anyways, Hunter would stop fighting you and instead tell you fun facts about wolves and give you his homemade Chthonic Companion: Flapjack! I think it would be a timed session of like 5-10 seconds that how much damage you cause is proportional to how much health you get back.
Tumblr media
Anyways, hereā€™s a better look at Hunter! I gave him the cast crystal as part of the staff and covered him in that symbol to really show his dedication to the cause šŸ«”šŸ«”

iā€™m really interested in yā€™allā€™s takes (and if this is popular /yall are are interested i might make polls for more characters)
below is propaganda for what i think/what im tied between (very long)
^this is mainly the inspo for everything i wrote
so a decade ago when I made my original Hogwarts au i felt so sure of my placements. but then as the characters became so complex and more was revealed, itā€™s obviously more nuanced.
lion was clearly my choice at the beginning. heā€™s an impulsive, reckless, strong willed, bold, determined, passionate and selfless person. because he was fighting for a cause we agreed with, he was heroic. he exemplified the good parts of gryffindor; following his morals and what he believed was right and driven towards his goals for freedom. he had such intense personal justice and morality to the point that he believed that those that took freedom from others deserved to died.
but without a doubt, that was twisted when we realized the traits he had were not necessarily for humanity but for his own selfish desires. which showed his true snake nature. he only cared to protect himself and his loved ones. he didnā€™t care about anything or anyone else in the end, and maybe he never did. all he cared about was his own personal freedom being taken from him and he would do anything to get it and punish those that stole it from him.
he didnā€™t know why but he wanted to destroy everything. is that more lion or snake? heā€™s such a simple minded character. sees everything in such black and white, me vs them, extreme to extreme, killing himself for humanity or genociding the world. and he was prepared to and did do extremely unethical and manipulative things to get what he wanted. he cares about his people and will destroy everyone else. thatā€™s so key to being a snake. but being single-minded is also like key lion trait.
iā€™ve noticed that the line between lion and snake is very thin. and so is badger and snake surprisingly.
-
also to those who are curious how he might fit into the other houses:
with badger, his loyalty was and is a key component of his character. he wanted freedom, he didnā€™t want to die, but he could not kill his friends. he could not escape his main ties to his friends. a badgerā€™s entire basis is about care for all people, however a badger can decide who counts as a ā€˜personā€™. he has no problem killing titans at the beginning but then decides to spare the one on the floor. he dehumanizes those who take freedom from others and makes it in his head that they donā€™t count as ā€˜peopleā€™. which culminates in him wiping out everyone who is not ā€˜peopleā€™ to him.
but i think this exemplifies snake traits more
with bird, itā€™s hard to explain bc im seeing it in the sorting hat chats pov (the link i put above) but they say that birdā€™s main driving force is systems and the system they have crafted must be followed. most birds change the system and make it more complex as the learn more. but stagnant birds are those that refuse to change. when his need for freedom conflicts with his knowledge that everything is predetermined and he has no real choice, his system breaks and he becomes depressed and is consigned to suicide.
tho ā€¦i donā€™t know. heā€™s like the least bird person ever. he is impulsive and reckless. he only starts to be calculating in the end of his life in an extremely snake way. he doesnā€™t systemize his morals or views of the world or is in pursuit for knowledge and truth. rather he is very dead set on one goal and commits even when he knows itā€™s wrong (which a bird would never think) also bro is not wise or creative or any other characteristicsā€”
-
So now with all the propaganda out of the way, Iā€™d love for you to write your explanations for your choice! (long or short)
also i wanna do a poll for armin, mikasa reiner and jean bc those are alsao characters who i feel like have such nuances to them that id love to hear input:))

Sorry, Rhaenyra, the way you did this was stupid. You got two riders, yes, but many potential riders died. In fact, what if none of these people had been up to Vermithor's standards and he had killed them all, even though they could have ridden other dragons?

OC concepts #01 - Puritan Morty
(OBS: Not to be confused with Pilgrim Morty)
Tumblr media
Lore (outside universe text):
{ GRRR YOU'RE NOT WRONG ITS *LORE TIME* OHHHHH YEAHHHHHH I MISSED THIS SO MUCHHH IM FUMMING BY THE MOUTH HRHWDEDRERRRR }
Puritan Morty is actually just a silly little puritan from the 17th who loves God. ... That's all.
" Ohh good morrow, what cheer?<3 "
Tumblr media
Basically Puritan Morty wasn't really known as "Puritan Morty", but actually an unhinged and absolutely mentally unstable crazy man from the 17th century. It's said that he wrote absolutely nuts notes in the walls of his house after a near death experience in his 19s. After the traumatic event, he "finally could truly understand the reason why he was born" and could see not only dead people and spirits, but also the living people soul's true form - what eventually turned him insane and forced him to isolate himself in cause of the terrifying visions he had everytime he was faced with people. The notes he wrote, eventually himself through the years would refine into the very, very, VERY CURSED book that is now called the Mortynomicon, which somehow ended up in some Rick's attic.
However, those are only theories. Before someone actually looked at his face and knew he was IDENTICAL to Morty, he was just some other old supernatural myth.
It's said that parts of the cursed scriptures of Mortynomicon were seen in past centuries thousands of years ago in ancient found relics.
People(Ricks who deal with supernatural stuff) also believed that the book (including, but not limited) describes ways to communicate with the dead, to make deals with various evil spirits and even how to expel a soul from the body of a living person permanently. It also tells about a dangerously unfriendly and menacingly powerful entity that can be summoned through this book, among with other dangerous practices.
The book is locked up by a huge lock and can only be open with a key that is currently COMPLETELY LOST. And if it were every found, oh lad... You can't really comprehend how f#cked we'd be.
Crucial references(design and lore):
(personally I believe- I mean- its pretty damn obvious but- i think I may be wrong? We never know- the Necronomicon and Forbidden Morty (from pocket Mortys of course) are DIRECT references, but I'ma mention both anyway)
-Of course, The Necronomicon, the most badass book. -Talk to me (movie - specially the Medium's hand backstory, I love that sm). -Forbidden Morty.
