Eugène gets promoted (battle of Marengo)
Translated from the first volume of "Mémoires et correspondance politique et militaire du Prince Eugène" by Albert DuCasse again. This is about the second half of the battle of Marengo, when Desaix's arrival on the battlefield enabled the French to take the offensive again:
Finally, at around five o'clock, General Desaix joined us, and the First Consul was able to resume the offensive. General Lannes' troops, encouraged by this reinforcement, reformed, and soon the attack began, as did the enemy's retrograde march. General Kellermann's cavalry made a very fine charge on our left and, towards evening, the guard cavalry made an equally brilliant one. Although the terrain did not favour us, since we had two ditches to cross, we rushed with vigour against a column of cavalry much more numerous than us, just as it was deploying; we pushed it as far as the first bridges over the waters of the Bormida, constantly attacking with our sabres. The melee lasted ten minutes: I was lucky enough to get away with two sabre blows to my shabrack. The next day, the First Consul, on hearing the account of the affair, appointed me chef d'escadron. My squadron had suffered quite a bit, for, of the one hundred and fifteen horses I had in the morning, I had only forty-five left in the evening; it is true that a picket of fifteen chasseurs had remained close to the First Consul, and that many of the chasseurs, dismounted or slightly wounded, returned one after the other.
The official date of the promotion is 9 July 1800, and according to the "Moniteur", that's two days after Berthier had returned to Paris. Eugène himself at this time was still on the march.
(There's also sometimes cited a letter from Napoleon to Josephine, praising Eugène for taking captive an Austrian general during the battle. However, that letter is pretty sure a later fabrication, as there are so many. Eugène makes no mention of such an event.)

"Near Victory Turned to Defeat for British Forces," Kingston Whig-Standard. June 26, 1942. Page 10. ---- When these pictures were made in Libya a few short weeks ago things were going well for the British German tanks like the captured one above were being tested. German prisoners like these at left below were being taken. South African gunners like those at right below were blistering the desert with bullets. But Rommel came back with bigger, better armored tanks to take many more thousands of British prisoners, a large part of them South Africans.

Various Polish Forces during the Second World War
The Polish Army in World War II, despite being poorly equipped compared to other armies, fought fiercely against the German invasion, initially defending their homeland in the "September Campaign" before forming a significant exiled force that fought alongside the Allies in the West, particularly distinguishing themselves in the Italian campaign and the Battle of Monte Cassino, with notable contributions also made by the Polish Air Force and Navy throughout the war; they are recognized for their significant resistance movement within occupied Poland, known as the "Home Army" (Armia Krajowa), which engaged in sabotage and intelligence gathering against the German occupation forces.

xiao zhan - WWD article on his capsule collection with tod’s
TOD’S INTERSECTION: Tod’s is launching its second collection with Chinese actor, singer and the brand’s global brand ambassador Xiao Zhan. Bags, shoes, ready-to-wear and accessories feature the exclusive logo Tod’s· X, symbolizing the intersection of paths.
While the first collection was launched in 2022 when he was Tod’s China ambassador with then-creative director Walter Chiapponi, this is the first designed by the performer with Matteo Tamburini, who succeeded Chiapponi at the Italian brand at the end of 2023.
“The creativity and ideas came in naturally,” said Tamburini of the collection, “capturing the essence of Tod’s whilst introducing elements inspired by Xiao Zhan’s unique interpretation of modern simplicity and his understated fashion taste.”
The capsule, created by Tod’s Italian craftsmen, comprises the Di Bag Swing in brown and natural gray tones, with a classic saddle-stitch detailing and its reverse handle design; the Tod’s X phone bag in a micro version; the T Vintage sneakers in two color combinations, brown/white and gray/white; a scarf with similar natural color hues, and the double-layer collar shirt.
“I believe that the intersection of different styles and lifestyles meeting and blending through these objects makes for a beautiful experience,” said the actor. “I recall my encounter with Tod’s as such a beautiful moment. The brand’s approach to life, that relaxed, effortless elegance combined with a deep passion, resonates with me deeply.”
The collection will be available starting Thursday on Tod’s e-site worldwide and in a number of selected brand boutiques. A dedicated campaign will be launched mainly digitally and out-of-home.
The artist became Tod’s global brand ambassador in February and has also fronted communication campaigns for Zenith, Gucci, JD.com, Li-Ning, Tencent Video, Budweiser and, most recently, Boucheron. He is a member of the Chinese boy group X Nine and rose to prominence in 2019 with his performance in the TV drama “The Untamed,” later available globally on Netflix.

Aquileia
The ancient city of Aquileia was situated near the head of the Adriatic Sea west of the Roman province of Illyria. The strategic location of the city served a crucial role in the expansion of the Roman Republic by serving as a buffer against possible invasions from the Germanic tribes to the north. As a colony with major harbor facilities, Aquileia allowed the Romans to exploit both the neighboring gold mines as well as the region's own rich amber.
To the north of the colony was the independent territory of Noricum. It would become a Roman province in 16 BCE under Roman emperor Augustus (27 BCE to 14 CE). Although Noricum controlled a few minor routes over the Alps, its location south of the Danube and abundant iron and gold reserves were far more valuable to the Republic, allowing trade to emerge between Noricum and northeastern Italy, namely Aquileia. As a buffer and center of trade, the city would eventually become one of the largest and wealthiest cities of the Roman Empire, becoming the capital of Venetia et Istria.
A Gallic Region
Lying to the north and northeast of the Italian peninsula far to the west of Aquileia lay Cisalpine and Transalpine Gaul. During the early and middle Roman Republic, the area was not considered part of Italia, which only extended to the foothills of the Apennines. Cisalpine Gaul comprised the area from the plains of the Po River to the Apennines, while Transalpine Gaul extended beyond the Alps northward. Although sources vary, Cisalpine Gaul was initially the home of the Etruscans; however, Celtic tribes from north of the Alps – the Insubres and Senones among them – gradually moved into the area, and by the end of the 4th century BCE, the Etruscans had been completely forced out – thereby enabling the Celts (Gauls) to make the occasional raid into Italian territory.
Around 390 BCE, the Celts were bold enough to push further south and sack the city of Rome. Tom Holland in his Rubicon wrote that "a barbarian horde had burst without warning across the Alps, sent a Roman army fleeing from it in panic, and swept into Rome" (234). Although sporadic raids continued into the 3rd century BCE, in 225 BCE, Rome was able to defeat the Gallic invaders at Telamon – a city located on the coast of Etruria between Rome and Pisa. Realizing the importance and potential of the region, the Romans went on a three-year campaign, capturing Mediolanum (Milan) in 223 BCE. Further attempts to move northward were foiled by the Carthaginian commander Hannibal in the Second Punic War (218-201 BCE) where many of the Celtic tribes sided with Hannibal. After his defeat, Rome continued their foray into the region, establishing colonies at Cremona and Placentia (Piacenza).

i almost bailed on new year’s because i was sleepy and the weather was horrendous, but it was three short blocks from my apartment and i’d said i’d go so i really had no excuse; when i got there for a moment i was worried it was populated exclusively by Fashionable Gay People, but then i peered into another room and found the mutual aid contingent and was relieved even as i remembered with amusement a few parties ago, back in october, someone remarking, not harshly, on our collective habit of going to parties to talk to the same 10-20 people we already know. the first thing i did in 2025 was go see no, the gael garcia bernal movie about the campaign to vote no on the 1988 plebiscite on pinochet; the second was family brunch; the third was watching the shop around the corner and confirming i am truly jimmy stewart pilled now. thursday i got a great haircut and hung out in the mulberry street library reading js&mn (i have most recently arrived at the portion after strange comes home from the war) and met a friend for dinner before seeing teeth, my second time getting around to a michael r. jackson musical just in time for closing week; not a perfect show but a wild time and i’m very glad he gets to be out there doing his thing. friday i got pleasantly fucked up and went out dancing until 3:30 in the morning with like ten people all of whom once again know each other because we like making it possible for people to get free stuff, which i guess one day i will accept is just my life now but on some level has not yet sunk in. i thought a lot as i have been thinking a lot about how for my entire twenties and then some loneliness was the defining color in my emotional landscape and i am still awkward and neurotic and shy but that just isn’t true anymore, when i thought it would be true forever. an absurdly cool trans girl i know told me she loved my hair and i went to sleep having achieved my step count for friday and saturday mostly in the span of about four hours. saturday i thought was to be for laundry and sleep but n. said a movie was playing he remembered loving so i made it into the city (after laundry) to watch todo mudo, a 1976 political thriller with a somewhat inscrutable plot (to me, knowing nothing about italian politics after the fall of rome other than that mussolini happened) and impeccable vibes, and back at home i managed to muster up the will for full body day to hit my fifth workout of the week, because i am very tough and brave.
today i tutored for the first time in two weeks and screwed up what was supposed to by my second by forgetting my own schedule, but it’s fine. i reviewed & resolutioned & brought my mom a change of clothes at the hospital and made a little page i can duplicate in my planning app that looks just like my little notebook weekly log pages except it lives in my ipad :) i have had an extremely good staycation and already have a series of nice things to look forward to in the days ahead. i feel very lucky here at the dawn of 2025. i keep thinking that, over and over.

A (comparatively) Brief Thought about Steve Harrington's Names
Lucky Stevie has full names in three different languages and they're all equally incriminating in different ways!
For context: Steve's parents meet just as the summer of '66 is ending, in a perfectly legitimate bar with absolutely no connection to organised crime in Chicago. They introduce themselves as Christopher (call me Chris, Christopher is shite) Harrington and Anita (but you, bello, can call me Tina) Martino. They are both lying.
See, America is it's own little world. Founded by desperate refugees and religious extremists, the USA is the New York of the western world - the perfect place to disappear, because no matter your sins, there's always someone weirder. And in this totally not shady bar in Chicago, these two strangers have a lot of sins.
Mr. Ciarán Ótis Marcin Ó'hArrachtáin is what some might call a terrorist. Those 'some' are, of course, all eejits who seem to be fecking delirah with the Brits treating the Irish Free State as a colony. But Ótis and Martyna didn't raise a spineless dosser, not on tales of the shite they saw in Nazi Poland. Ciarán wants to be just like his mama, so does the only thing he can at sweet sixteen and joins the IRA. It was a grand old time - until some spanner decided to start the boarder campaign, make some things go boom, then it all goes arseways and suddenly he's a wanted man. Now he's legged it all the way out to this bar in Chicago where he can find some mostly-legal work, set himself up as someone who doesn't need to check over his shoulder every five seconds - and maybe he can take a chance on this absolute ride of an Italian who's just walked in, Jaysus -
Sig.na Alessia Stefania "Pieterina" Serafini has made a name for herself as a mafiosa. Beloved, wild, ruthless granddaughter of Don Alessio - caporegime since nineteen and well on her way to consigliere - and, right now, in molti problemi with la Cosa Nostra. So much problemi that she's been effectively smuggled into the US, like that goddamn heroin shipment that started all these problemi... ah well. She just needs to lie low for a bit (a decade) with her American cousins on the less than legal side of Chicago before she can return to her cosca and the people she actually trusts not to stab her the moment she turns her back - and maybe she can have some fun with this bello, bello Irishman who's looking her way, dannazione -
So. Discussing the evolution Mr and Mrs Harrington's relationship is gonna have to wait (though I'd love to hear from you guys) - the important thing here is the family history.
================================================
Tina's side: Alessia Stefania "Pietrina" Serafini.
Tina's father is Vincenzo Serafini and her grandfather is Alessio Serafini. Her first name is the feminine of her paternal grandfather's name. Steve's middle names are also from them.
(In case it wasn't obvious, the Serafini family are heavily involved in the Italian mafia - potentially involved in the Ciaculli massacre in '63 - and also have ties to the American mafia.)
Tina's mother is Pietra Tedesco and her grandmother is Stefania Tedesco. Her middle name - Stefania - and her son's first name - Stefano - are from her maternal grandmother. "Pietrina" is a diminutive nickname for Pietra - they're saying she's just like her mother, and since they figured this would be easy and natural enough for Steve to remember, his agreed Italian 'cover' surname is Di Pietro.
(Pietra is the feminine of her father's Petri Tedesco - which is itself the new name chosen by the German runaway Peter Thälmann. No relation to German Communist Party Leader Ernst Thälman, no sir, nothing to see here.)
So: Stefano Alessio Vincenzo Serafini - or, when he doesn't want to advertise the mafia part - Stefano Di Pietro.
Chris' side: Ciarán Ótis Marcin Ó'hArrachtáin.
Chris' father is Ótis Ó'hArrachtáin, and his paternal grandparents Steafán and Keira Ó'hArrachtáin. He gets his first name from the masculine of his grandmother's name, his middle name from his father, and gave Steve his grandfather's name.
(Steafán and Keira worked their asses off their whole life to put their kids through school, ennabling Ótis to work at the Irish embassy in Poland, where he managed to smuggle a handful of refugees past the Nazis to Britain, of which his future wife, Hannia Marcinkiewicz, was one.)
Chris' mother is Anita Marcinkiewicz. He gets his middle name from her surname. Steve gets his Irish 'cover' surname from that.
(Anita and her son are very similar as teenagers and young adults - the same heady cocktail of jaded rage and a naïve sense of justice, motivating spiky teens in parallel shitty situations to commit near-suicidal acts of heroism, with similar results. Just what did Anita do? Nothing you can prove, of course...)
(Yes, Anita Marcinkiewicz and Anita Martino - a wild coincidence that kicks of conversation for our young lovers in Chicago. Not in any way manipulated by an omnipotent fangirl who wants her OCs to have something neat to make slightly awkward but unexpectedly wholesome small talk about over a Guinness and a Negroni in a bar in Chicago). (This is why Chris calls his wife Tina all the time when anyone else would get shot if she's feeling anything less than saccharine.)
So: Steofán Ciarán Ótis Ó'hArrachtáin - or, when he'd rather avoid any connection to the wanted terrorist - Steofán Ó Máirtín.
================================================
Of course, as half Irish and half Italian - or, well, 1/8 German, 2/8 Polish, 2/8 Irish and 3/8 Italian but who's counting. Aside from me -
The point is, he's Catholic as fuck. He can be non-practicing and still Catholic (bc fuckboi), he can lose his faith and still be Catholic (bc interdimensional hell monsters), he can be an atheist (bc Irish) and still be Catholic, ok - he is Italian and Irish, there's no cure.
So, yeah, he's definitely been christened. And sure, you can old give any old name to the government (fuck them anyways) as long as it suits your purposes. But your christening name is the one that God knows you by, okay, you don't want to lie to the priest and end up with the wrong name tag when you get to heaven (or if, I guess).
What I'm saying is the paperwork says Steven Otis Harrington, but some poor Father/Reverendo gets hit with Stefano Stiofán Alessio Ciarán Vincenzo Ótis Serafini Ó'hArrachtáin. Good fucking luck!

Friends, lovers… and an orange | Epilogue
Author's note: And we've made it to the end! 😞 I must confess I was very insecure about this story when I started posting it and I still kind of am, I know it isn't one of my bests 😅 So the fact that you guys have read it and supported it, means a lot more than usual. I hope you like this last chapter (it finally explains what the orange on the title means 😅), and again, thank you very much for reading 💜

A few years later…
“Mase, we are gonna be late for dinner.”
“We won't. C'mon.”
“Can we at least walk a bit slower? You know heels aren't my thing, and on grass…”
“Then grab my arm. But c'mon, Addie. I don't want us to miss the sunset.”
“It's just the sunset, Mase” she chuckled as they continued walking through the gardens of their Italian villa. Because after all the summers they had spent there, and all the things they had lived and that had made it feel like it was their second home, Mason and Adele had decided to buy it.
“Today is your birthday, Addie. Everything about it is special.”
“I see… Is that the reason why you've made us all dress so fancy tonight?”
“Exactly. Only the best for the woman I love” Mason smiled, his dimple showing.
The previous year they had celebrated Adele's birthday at the beach with a big barbecue, their friends and families wearing just their swimsuits. But this year, for whatever the reason, Mason had been super picky and planned everything for everyone to the point that he had made a schedule with all the things they were going to do throughout the day. He had even booked a day just for Adele, their mums, Jourdan and Rianne, where they had gone to a spa and then to shop their outfits for the big day.
“Ok, so, umm…” Mason said when they made it to the spot he had chosen for them to watch the sunset. “Remember when I came to Italy to shoot my perfume campaign?”
“How to forget the perfume that started it all” she chuckled.
“Yeah” he smiled. “Well, half of the team was Spanish, and during lunch time we were talking about relationships and things like that, and one guy explained that in Spain to say that you've found your other half, you say you've found your media naranja.”
“Your what?” she laughed.
“My Spanish sucks, ok? Don't make fun of me” he replied, sticking out his tongue. “The literal translation would be to find your half an orange.”
“That's… weird.”
“It actually isn't. You are half an orange, and someone else is the other half of that orange. When you meet and get together, you make an orange, you complete the other. And that reminded me of us.”
“Are you calling me half an orange?”
“Addie…” he sighed. “I'm trying to be romantic and you are making fun of me.”
“I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Please continue.”
“Oranges have always been important to us. Our first kiss was under this very same orange tree. A perfume that smelled like oranges got us into a mess that led us to getting closer and to you falling in love with me. And it was here again, under this tree, where I confessed my feelings for you, which also led us to finally being together.”
“Yeah, finally” she smiled.
“So yes, Addie” Mason said, taking her hands on his. “You are half an orange. My half an orange. And together we make the most perfect one, an orange that was always destined to be made of those two halfs, of you and I. Of us together. Like you once said years ago, we are soulmates.”
“We are” she smiled.
“And because you are my soulmate, my media naranja” he said with his bad Spanish, making her laugh while letting go of her hands and getting on one knee. “Adele Antonia Turlington, would you marry me?”
“Mase” she gasped when she saw the little box on his hand, the most beautiful ring inside it. “Mase I… I… Yes.”
“Yes?” he asked, his smile growing bigger by the second, his dimples showing in all their glory.
“Yes” she repeated, tears already rolling down her cheeks. “Yes and a million times yes. I love you, Mason” she said after he stood up and put the ring on her finger. “I love you, I love you, I love you.”
“I think you are gonna have to say it again, I didn't hear you” he smirked, wrapping his arms around her waist.
“I love you, Mason. My soulmate, my half an orange, my everything.”
“I love you too, Addie” he smiled before kissing her, cheers and clapping being heard somewhere.
“What… what was that?” Adele asked.
“That has to be our family and friends.”
“What?”
“They were watching” Mason said.
“What?” she repeated, this time louder.
“I wanted to remember this moment, so I asked them to hide and film it and take photos.”
“Aww, Mase.”
“Cute, uh?” he smirked. “But there is more.”
“More?”
“More” he smiled before taking the hand where her new ring was shining and starting to walk towards where the voices had come from.
“Mase, what… What is all this?” Adele asked him.
“Our wedding.”
“Our what?”
“I know we just literally got engaged, but I don't want to wait, Addie. I want to marry you and make it official in front of everyone we love that I want to spend the rest of my life with you as your husband.”
“You… what… I…” she mumbled, looking from Mason to where their parents, their brothers, and some of their closest friends, like Jourdan and Rianne, were waiting for them.
But they weren't the only thing that was making Adele's eyes be about to pop from their sockets. They were standing next to an arch made with white flowers and orange details, the sea and the town nearby being perfectly framed behind it. It was simple, but stunning.
“Is this the reason why you've been acting so weird this whole trip and being so annoying with your schedule? Because you were planning it all?” she asked.
“Yeah… Sorry about that” Mason said. “But I was so nervous, Addie. I wanted it all to be perfect. And I know you probably had in mind something bigger, something with more flowers and live music and…”
“I love it, Mase” Adele cut him.
“Really?”
“Yes” she nodded, trying to not start crying again.
“Then do you want to do it? Do you want to marry me?”
“I already said yes, didn't I?” she chuckled, showing him her ring.
“You did, yes” he smiled. “Shall we, then?”
“Yes” Adele smiled back.
“Ok. Then wait here, I'm gonna tell everyone” Mason said before running towards their family and friends, leaving Adele alone with her thoughts.
She was going to marry him. Him, Mason, her Mase. And she was about to do it in her favourite place in the whole wide world, the Italian villa where they had made so many memories together, the one that meant so much to them and that now was their home too.
“I believe this is for you” Luca said, meeting Adele and giving her a big bouquet of flowers that matched the ones on the arch.
“Thank you” she smiled. “But shouldn't be dad the one walking me to the altar?”
“Love you too, sis” he replied, rolling his eyes.
“I didn't mean it like that, Luca. You know I love you and that you are my favourite little brother.”
“I am the only little brother you have, Addie.”
“Alex has always been like a little brother to me too.”
“Yeah, try to fix it now” he said, trying to look mad.
“I love you, Luca” Adele said, caressing his cheek.
“I know you do, Addie. I know” he smiled. “Anyway, should we do this? I think Mason is starting to fear you may run away.”
“I'm not running away, you idiot” she said, hitting her brother.
“Ouch!” he complained. “You do love him, don't you, sis?”
“With my whole heart” she said, looking at where Mason was standing, Toni trying to tame his hair. “But you still haven't told me why dad isn't walking me.”
“Oh, that. He's marrying you.”
“What?”
“Yeah” Luca said. “He got some kind of certificate and is legally allowed to do it. So, ready to become Adele Mount?”
“I'm not changing my last name, Luca.”
“Good” he smiled. “Then let's do this.”
“Yes” Adele said, taking the arm her brother was offering her, her heart beating so fast in her chest she felt it was going to break her ribs. And as she got closer to where Mason was, she felt it could actually happen.
“You look gorgeous, Addie” he said.
“I look the same I did five minutes ago” she chuckled.
“Are you ready, guys?” Adele's dad said, making them stop looking at each other like two idiots.
“Ready” they both said.
The ceremony didn't last long. Her dad gave a little speech, Jourdan sang one of their favourite songs (she had always been an amazing singer), and they exchanged their vows and the rings.
“And now I pronounce you husband and wife” Adele's dad said. “You may kiss the bride.”
“Finally” Mason said, wrapping his hands around her waist and making her lean back like they do in movies, all while she laughed and held onto him. “How was that for our first kiss as husband and wife?” he asked against her lips.
“Perfect” she smiled.
“Just so you know, it is going to be the first kiss of many. Because I'm gonna be kissing you for the rest of our very very long lives together… wife” he smirked, his left cheek dimple showing.
“Looking forward to it… husband” she giggled.
“I love you, Addie” he said, brushing his nose against hers.
“I love you too, Mase” she replied before kissing him again.

Nothing new here. Only Duroc almost drowned yesterday.
Eugène de Beauharnais giving a rather condensed report of events during the Second Italian campaign to his sister (from Novara, 7 June 1800).
(The rest is Bessières thanking for Hortense's greetings and Eugène sending some of his own).

Finding Home
written for @steddiemicrofic prompt: charm wc: 548 | rated: t | cw: minor homophobia
The first time, it was a total disaster. Every property they toured had something seriously wrong with it.
A fifth floor walk up, unfurnished, with what was possibly the world's narrowest stairwells. A second floor apartment, that even during the early afternoon appointment had the neighbors arguing loudly in a way that reminded Steve too much of his childhood and listening to his parents arguing in the next room. A basement apartment that was accompanied by gunfire and upon leaving there was obvious criminal activity that reminded Eddie of the neighborhood where he'd lived before Wayne got custody. A small house that looked cute from the outside, but on the inside was practically crumbling. A duplex where the upstairs neighbor started screaming about the bible and queers going to hell before they'd even walked in the door.
"I don't know, Eds. Maybe we should be looking somewhere else. Everywhere just seemed so bad." Steve sighed in defeat as they started the drive back to Hawkins.
"Don't give up so fast, baby. Indianapolis is the place for us, I can feel it. We just need to try a different company or something. She seemed to just show us the bad stuff available. There's going to be something good." Eddie replied, his tone optimistic.
The second time was better, but still not amazing. It was the little things that put them off.
A house that would have been perfect, if they hadn't been greeted by the judgmental head of the HOA as they left. A roomy third floor apartment where the lights kept flickering, and they were informed by the neighbor that it was a common occurrence. A house that needed a bit of love, and had a cop in uniform come by to introduce himself as the neighbor, putting Eddie a little too on edge following the witch hunt and false murder allegations. A top floor apartment that had multiple elevators and incredible views, they were just about ready to sign when they found out that the landlord had upped the rent leaving it at nearly double their budget.
"I told you it would get better," Eddie said as they headed back to Hawkins.
"But we've still not found anything. How many times do we need to drive up here just to leave without finding something." Steve replied, a little frustrated.
"Next time will be the one, I can feel it."
The third time started off bad, but ended incredibly well.
A first floor apartment that had multiple signs of damp, and stains from water leaking through the ceiling. A house where every other house in the neighborhood had a Bush 88 campaign sign in the front yard.
But the third property was perfect. A duplex where the neighbors and landladies were an older couple, a tiny Italian woman and a tall Hispanic woman. Both incredibly kind and welcoming, offering coffee as they arrived. Looking around, there was enough space to host the kids or have Robin come and stay. A yard where they could do what they wanted with. The entire space had been well cared for, and it showed in the little touches.
"I think this is going to be home," Steve said as they left.
"What did I tell you? Third time's a charm." Eddie replied.

"Inferno Rages in Sand, Sky of Libya War Zone," Toronto Star. May 28, 1942. Page 23. ---- WITH TANKS AND PLANES the war has flared again in the Libyan desert as the Axis forces launched a four-pronged drive at British positions west and south of Tobruk. "The biggest tanks I have seen in two years of desert warfare," was the description given by one foreign correspondent of German tanks. The R.A.F. is in heavy action only 15 miles west of Tobruk. CENTRE OF THE FOUR-PRONGED Axis drive against the British in the desert is between Ain El Gazala, 30 miles west of Tobruk and Bir Hacheim, southeast of Tobruk. There the British have powerful artillery concentrations, such as these, and, according to London sources, the defences in the rear are even more powerful than the outlying strong points. DURING THE LULL in desert warfare both sides brought up reinforcements and new equipment. The Axis is said to be using bigger tanks with very strong armor. British forces, too, have new equipment. Ever ready for a possible gas attack, British have masks such as this, being placed on a soldier by a South African W.A.A.F. sergeant.
BEST WAY to put enemy aircraft out of action is to blast them, before they get off the ground and both sides have been doing this since the war flamed up again in the Libyan desert. These are Italian planes burning after a British attack on a airdrome.
ROMMEL'S TANK COLUMNS are in the forefront of the Libyan battle and one observer says that almost all the Axis armored columns are now in the fight. London sources state "no real offensive can be mounted unless the attacking forse holde both Bengazi and Tobruk." The Axis is making a fierce drive only 15 miles from Tobruk. The British are confident. "Let 'em come and get us!" is their motto.

In recent days, the French president, Emmanuel Macron, has capitulated to the far-right anti-immigration agenda of Marine Le Pen. In July, in an electoral pact with the left, he sought a firewall against her. Now he has turned rightwards, giving her an effective veto over prime minister Michel Barnier’s new government.
By the end of the month, the Austrian Freedom party (FPÖ), founded by two former members of the SS, Anton Reinthaller and Friedrich Peter, is expected to form an anti-immigration,pro-Russian government. It will cement a new hard-right axis across Austria, Hungary and Slovakia, and more importantly, Italy, where step by step the far-right prime minister, Giorgia Meloni (who met Keir Starmer on Monday), is accused of taking control of the press and the judiciary.
The far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party has just won the east German regional elections in Thuringia and came second in Saxony. This is despite Germany’s domestic intelligence agency listing the AfD in three states as an “extremist” organisation, reflecting concerns about the Holocaust denial and links to far-right political violence of some of its members – and their invoking of banned Nazi slogans, for which the party’s Thuringian leader, Björn Höcke, has twice been found guilty in German courts.
But while Germany’s centre-right opposition leader, Friedrich Merz, who last year supported coalitions with the AfD in local government, has now refused to enter any national or regional coalition with the AfD, he has come closer to much of its anti-immigration agenda. He now wants “to talk about the issue of repatriation” of existing residents.
Now Höcke is openly mocking what he calls the “dumb firewall” against him, forecasting that it will not last. And last week the German coalition government reacted to the AfD’s success by tightening control of its bordersin an effort to curb irregular migration.
Another lurch rightward came with the decision last month by the Dutch health minister, a member of Geert Wilders’ far-right Freedom party, to refuse requests from African countries for urgent help in the fight against mpox, even when the Dutch stockpile runs to 100,000 boxes of unused vaccines – many of which will pass their use-by date next year.
The spectre haunting Europe is not communism, as Karl Marx once wrote, but far-right extremism. And not much is left of the cordon sanitaire that was to keep out the far right. Europe now has seven governments with hard-right parties in control or in coalition, with Austria likely to be next, as once-immovable barriers to contamination are swept aside by centre-right appeasers.
“Breaking point” was the slogan on a poster that Nigel Farage deployed in 2016 during the Brexit referendum campaign, portraying bearded and dark-skinned migrants appearing to march in droves towards us. The exact same photograph was later replicated in Hungary, with the caption changed from “Breaking point” to “Stop”.
Similar slogans include “Stop the invasion” (“Stop invasione”), used by Matteo Salvini’s Italian League party; and “Close the borders” (“Grenzen dicht”), adopted by German far-right groups the AfD and Pegida (Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West).
A few years ago, when the now-imprisoned former Donald Trump adviser Steve Bannon attempted to form a global coalition of anti-globalists, he managed to herd together a number of Europe’s rightwing leaders, from Nigel Farage to Hungary’s Viktor Orbán. He was involved in setting up an “Academy for the Judeo-Christian West” in Italy. And Trump’s “America first” Republican party is now one of many to adopt the “my country first” slogan.
Spain’s far-right Vox party has used “Primero lo nuestro. Primero los españoles”; Italy’s League, “Prima gli Italiani”; Hungary’s Fidesz party, “Nekünk Magyarország az első”; Germany’s AfD, “Unser Land zuerst”; Austria’s FPÖ, “Österreich zuerst”; and the Swiss People’s Party, “Die Schweiz zuerst”.
Outside Europe, “Önce Türkiye” (“Turkey First”) is promoted by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s Justice and Development party. The far-right Japan First party marches under the banner of “日本第一” (“Japan first”). “India first” has been adopted by prime minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata party.
Variations on this theme include “Polska dla Polaków” (“Poland for Poles”),used by nationalists in Poland, Vox’s slogan “España viva” (“Long live Spain”), and “Brasil acima de tudo” (“Brazil above everything”), used by Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro.
In all, about 50 countries have already gone to the polls in 2024. “Fears that this year would reflect the global triumph of illiberal populism have so far been proved wrong,” Francis Fukuyama, a senior fellow at Stanford University’s Center on Democracy and the author of the End of History and the Last Man thesis, has concluded. “Democratic backsliding can and has been resisted in many countries.”
He can, of course, point to the return of Labour in Britain, the re-election of Ursula von der Leyen as president of the European Commission, the shift away from the far right in Poland and the setback for Modi in India. But the Polish and Indian results tell me no more than tolerance of rightwing extremism can ebb when the electorate finds out that the nationalist demagogues are good at exploiting grievances, but bad at eradicating them.
And so we must not forget what has happened in countries from Indonesia to Argentina, the knife-edge fight for power in the US and – what Fukuyama misses in Europe – the insidious surrender of the centre to far-right prejudice.
Of course, there are ways to frustrate the onward rush of rightwing populists. Not only did the Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, defeat the right in national elections last year, but he has skilfully engineered a split between Spain’s centre-right People’s party (PP) and the far-right Vox over the fate of vulnerable child migrants. Until July the two were in coalition in five key regions: Valencia, Aragón, Murcia, Extremadura and Castilla y León.
But it was not the centre-right PP that abandoned the extreme-right Vox; it was the extreme right that walked away from the centre right. And as long as the so-called moderates continue to play with fire – believing that by keeping their opponent close, they can eventually tame the beast – they will continue to lose. Sooner rather than later, the far-right poison will have to be countered with a progressive agenda focused on what matters to people most: jobs, standards of living, fairness and bridging the morally indefensible gap between rich and poor.

ARTICLE: "The plane journey that convinced Ferrari on Leclerc" (Autosport Plus, 2018)
While Ferrari is doing all it can to help minimise the pressure - with boss Maurizio Arrivabene saying this week that the only goal for next year is for Leclerc to gain experience and 'absorb' the tricks of the trade - there is a feeling that in reality it secretly expects much more.
To realise why that is, you have to wind back the clock a little and understand that the decision to sign Leclerc was not some spur-of-the-moment call forced upon Ferrari because it was in a rush to sign somebody.
Ferrari made its decision on the eve of the Italian Grand Prix to pick Leclerc over Kimi Raikkonen not because it had to, but because it wanted to.
Leclerc's speed was obvious. The need to potentially shake up the internal dynamic at Ferrari was real.
And those fears about it being too early for Leclerc, of a young man not able to cope with intense pressure and at risk of being burned out and thrown onto the scrap heap before he hit his peak? The team management's minds had already been put at ease on that front.
It is often said that the qualities of an individual are found not when they are celebrating success, but when they have to pick themselves up from the bad moments.
And in Leclerc's case, it was the way he was able to cope with the death of his father in 2017 that proved a defining moment in convincing Ferrari that he had all it takes to deal with the pressure of racing for the Prancing Horse.
For someone who was as close to his father as Leclerc was, that loss last year was deeply painful. And, coming in the middle of an intense battle for the Formula 2 crown, it could have been enough to trigger a loss of concentration and a drop in form.
But amid all the personal heartache Leclerc was suffering, Arrivabene recalls meeting him on the Ferrari charter flight to Baku that week, and how the youngster's attitude there left him in no doubts about his star qualities.
"I asked him how he was after losing his father a few days before," explains Arrivabene. "He replied that he wanted to win the race, and then go home for the funeral. That is exactly what he did.
"If a guy can handle these moments, I do not think that he will have problems adjusting to the pressure of F1."
Leclerc has spoken openly about how the emotional rollercoaster of that weekend - the crying in the helmet after he took pole position and then the wins - meant those were days where he grew up a lot.
It is important to remember though that Baku was not the first time in his career Leclerc has faced supreme challenges. He knows full well how to keep his head under control when things are not going the way he may have hoped.
There was the risk as he started out his career of being unable to continue karting because the funds were drying up. Only a bit of help from his brother Lorenzo's best friend, Jules Bianchi, in convincing Nicolas Todt to try to help, made the difference.
Even today Todt remembers a very nervous Leclerc being dressed in a super smart black suit for their first meeting... and impressing throughout.
Then there was the difficult time in the middle of his 2015 European Formula 3 campaign. Taking a seat in the Van Amersfoort team that Max Verstappen had shone so strongly for in '14, Leclerc began the season in fine form with a series of wins in the first half of the year.
But something - most likely related to a senior engineer departing mid-season for personal reasons - changed within the team and Leclerc found himself suddenly on the back foot over the second half of the year. Where once he was battling in the top three week in and week out, suddenly he was fighting to be in the top 10.
Leclerc had to dig deep to try to recover; find answers about what had gone wrong, as he came home fourth overall in the standings.
But a super strong showing in Macau, where he finished second right behind winner Felix Rosenqvist, suggested he had kept his focus and unlocked the answers that were needed.
That time also marked Leclerc's arrival in the Ferrari Driver Academy, which helped him both progress as a driver and also show more evidence that when the intensity and pressure increase, he just gets better.
As manager Todt recalls: "Ferrari has helped him in many ways. Physical, mental preparation and also the contribution of the simulator played an important role. Of course, even more pressure has come, as is normal when you are part of the Ferrari world.
"But we have found that the greater the pressure that Charles is subject to, the greater his performance on track. That is a fundamental aspect, because today in the paddock I think that all the drivers have excellent sporting skills. But what makes the difference is the head, and on this front Charles I think is very solid."
Vettel will not be unaware of how fast and how mentally strong Leclerc is. Even if he hadn't seen it for himself, he has probably been told well in advance by Arrivabene why Ferrari is convinced it has the right man.
Did that prompt Vettel's recent suggestions that it will be important that the pair of them work together - rather than against each other - for the good of the team? Is he seeing a shift in the sands at Maranello as things will be different to how they were with Raikkonen? Only Vettel knows the answer to that.

Dare you to, on the second-last day of Pride Month, write a big effortpost about all the people that Pride Month either moved to the Find Out stage or proceedings or flat-out assassinated. A necessary part of this post would be bemoaning that Pride Month missed Kissinger or some other monster. The reason would be to dare the universe to render your effortpost out of date by sniping someone just before the end of the month, after you post. Please, I beg of you, goad the universe into taking out one or two more than it intended!
Oh, I will do that right now for free!
JUNE 2023: Great month for justice, bad month for assholes!
Pat Robertson, notorious conservative Christian activist and long-time hate preacher: dies on June 8
Ted Kaczynski, aka the Unabomber, conducted a decades-long campaign of mail bombings and domestic terrorism in the name of protesting technology: dies on June 10
Silvio Berlusconi, notorious far-right ex-Italian PM and general fantastically corrupt shitheel: dies on June 12
Stockton Rush, billionaire libertarian businessman who actively ignored 1000 safety warnings about his crappy product and fired a whistleblower for saying so, notably got himself and 4 other people killed on June 18 and joins the hallowed Wikipedia list of inventors killed by their own invention
Honorable-not-quite-June-but-close mention: James G. Watt, Ronald Reagan's secretary of the interior and a rabid anti-environmentalist, died on May 27
John Eastman: conservative lawyer who actively advised and encouraged Trump to stage a coup: facing disbarment hearings in California
Oh yeah, that guy Trump: on June 8, was charged with 31 federal criminal counts under the Espionage Act, relating to his crimes with classified documents; 37 charges overall, which takes his felony haul to 71 (and counting);
Vladimir Putin: is not gonna have a fun time over the next few days over the fallout from the Wagner mercenary rebellion;
Andrew Tate, flagrant misogynist asshole: officially charged with rape and human trafficking in Romania;
Ron DeSantis: lost literally THREE different lawsuits over his terrible anti-LGBTQ laws; collapsed in the polls and his campaign is allegedly "close to being over" because he's so bad at it;
State of Arkansas: likewise had its attempted ban on gender-affirming care for minors permanently struck down
Marjorie Taylor Greene: the crazy House Freedom Caucus doesn't like her anymore, apparently, and wants to "purge" its members, including her (lolololol)
Man, that's all well and good, but it's really a shame that Pride Month 2023: This Time It's Personal didn't put a cherry on top by offing Henry Kissinger, or like, Clarence Thomas or Samuel Alito (or both, both, both is good)
Come on, Pride Month 2023.
What are you, a PUSSY?
