Aquileia
The ancient city of Aquileia was situated near the head of the Adriatic Sea west of the Roman province of Illyria. The strategic location of the city served a crucial role in the expansion of the Roman Republic by serving as a buffer against possible invasions from the Germanic tribes to the north. As a colony with major harbor facilities, Aquileia allowed the Romans to exploit both the neighboring gold mines as well as the region's own rich amber.
To the north of the colony was the independent territory of Noricum. It would become a Roman province in 16 BCE under Roman emperor Augustus (27 BCE to 14 CE). Although Noricum controlled a few minor routes over the Alps, its location south of the Danube and abundant iron and gold reserves were far more valuable to the Republic, allowing trade to emerge between Noricum and northeastern Italy, namely Aquileia. As a buffer and center of trade, the city would eventually become one of the largest and wealthiest cities of the Roman Empire, becoming the capital of Venetia et Istria.
A Gallic Region
Lying to the north and northeast of the Italian peninsula far to the west of Aquileia lay Cisalpine and Transalpine Gaul. During the early and middle Roman Republic, the area was not considered part of Italia, which only extended to the foothills of the Apennines. Cisalpine Gaul comprised the area from the plains of the Po River to the Apennines, while Transalpine Gaul extended beyond the Alps northward. Although sources vary, Cisalpine Gaul was initially the home of the Etruscans; however, Celtic tribes from north of the Alps – the Insubres and Senones among them – gradually moved into the area, and by the end of the 4th century BCE, the Etruscans had been completely forced out – thereby enabling the Celts (Gauls) to make the occasional raid into Italian territory.
Around 390 BCE, the Celts were bold enough to push further south and sack the city of Rome. Tom Holland in his Rubicon wrote that "a barbarian horde had burst without warning across the Alps, sent a Roman army fleeing from it in panic, and swept into Rome" (234). Although sporadic raids continued into the 3rd century BCE, in 225 BCE, Rome was able to defeat the Gallic invaders at Telamon – a city located on the coast of Etruria between Rome and Pisa. Realizing the importance and potential of the region, the Romans went on a three-year campaign, capturing Mediolanum (Milan) in 223 BCE. Further attempts to move northward were foiled by the Carthaginian commander Hannibal in the Second Punic War (218-201 BCE) where many of the Celtic tribes sided with Hannibal. After his defeat, Rome continued their foray into the region, establishing colonies at Cremona and Placentia (Piacenza).

It's also worth pointing out the comparison with Herculaneum (a nearby city that was destroyed by the same eruption) but which has recieved a lot less academic attention....
The ruins of Herculaneum give a much better example of daily life in the roman world as the city wasn't able to be evacuated in the same way as Pompeii (also Pompeii in 69CE was being rebuilt after an earthquake)
The remains of Herculaneum were actually discovered years before those of Pompeii. Pompeii only received all the attention because being buried by ash made excavations easier
In Herculaneum a lot more artefacts survive due to the nature of the eruption (Whilst Pompeii was buried by ash Herculaneum was covered by the pyroclastic flow)
Case in point: whilst excavating the docks/harbour most of the human remains were found to be adult men (which led to the belief that the city had been evacuated like Pompeii). However, when archaeologists began excavating the warehouses they discovered the remains of women and children (they had taken refuge in the arched storerooms for safety whilst the men took their chances outside)
Also, a lesser know fact about Pompeii is that the king of Italy in the 19th century (Umberto the something IIRC) ordered a special exhibition space made in Naples to house all the smut that was discovered (for example artefacts recovered from a street full of brothels) so as it couldn't be seen by women and or children after touring a display with his wife and daughter.
Pompeii is also our best source of 'Vulgar Latin' (as in what would have been spoken by the average person in the street) due to the amount of graffiti (often recommending particular prostitutes, people bragging about their sexual exploits and or slagging people off) that survives.
I finished my Rome book and have now begun one about Pompeii. I’m 65 pages in and I already love it: yes, it covers the volcano, but most of the book is about “this is what the town and daily life of it would have been like, actually.” Fascinating stuff. Things I’ve learned so far:
- The streets in Pompeii have sidewalks sometimes a meter higher than the road, with stepping stones to hop across as “crosswalks.” I’d seen some photos before. The book points out that, duh, Pompeii had no underground drainage, was built on a fairly steep incline, and the roads were more or less drainage systems and water channels in the rain.
- Unlike today, where “dining out” is expensive and considered wasteful on a budget, most people in Pompeii straight up didn’t have kitchens. You had to eat out if you were poor; only the wealthy could afford to eat at home.
- Most importantly, and I can’t believe in all the pop culture of Pompeii this had never clicked for me: Pompeii had a population between 6-35,000 people. Perhaps 2,000 died in the volcano. Contemporary sources talk about the bay being full of fleeing ships. Most people got the hell out when the eruption started. The number who died are still a lot, and it’s still gruesome and morbid, but it’s not “an entire town and everyone in it.” This also makes it difficult for archeologists, apparently (and logically): those who remained weren’t acting “normally,” they were sheltering or fleeing a volcano. One famous example is a wealthy woman covered in jewelry found in the bedroom in the glaridator barracks. Scandal! She must have been having an affair and had it immortalized in ash! The book points out that 17 other people and several dogs were also crowded in that one small room: far more likely, they were all trying to shelter together. Another example: Houses are weirdly devoid of furniture, and archeologists find objects in odd places. (Gardening supplies in a formal dining room, for example.) But then you remember that there were several hours of people evacuating, packing their belongings, loading up carts and getting out… maybe the gardening supplies were brought to the dining room to be packed and abandoned, instead of some deeper esoteric meaning. The book argues that this all makes it much harder to get an accurate read on normal life in a Roman town, because while Pompeii is a brilliant snapshot, it’s actually a snapshot of a town undergoing major evacuation and disaster, not an average day.
- Oh, another great one. Outside of a random laundry place in Pompeii, someone painted a mural with two scenes. One of them referenced Virgil’s Aeneid. Underneath that scene, someone graffiti’d a reference to a famous line from that play, except tweaked it to be about laundry. This is really cool, the book points out, because it implies that a) literacy and education was high enough that one could paint a reference and have it recognized, and b) that someone else could recognize it and make a dumb play on words about it and c) the whole thing, again, means that there’s a certain amount of literacy and familiarity with “Roman pop culture” even among fairly normal people at the time.

Excerpt:
Trump officials have taken actions that closely resemble measures contained in drafts of half a dozen executive orders and other proposals submitted by coal tycoon Robert E. Murray in the early days of the administration, according to documents released by the Energy Department.
In two instances, the Energy Department and Environmental Protection Agency took steps within a month similar to Murray’s ideas to roll back what he called “anti-coal” policies.
The Energy Department recently drew up a plan also advocated by Murray to impose a state of emergency to avoid the closure of ailing coal and nuclear plants.
The Environmental Protection Agency has taken steps to revoke or alter some of the other regulations Murray wanted changed, though some of his proposals have not been adopted and he is not the only coal executive to seek federal assistance.
In letters and a meeting with Energy Secretary Rick Perry on March 28, 2017, the Murray Energy chief executive urged the rollback of “anti-coal” measures, called on President Trump to withdraw from the Paris climate accord, proposed legislation that would fill in $7 billion of pension shortfall with federal tax dollars and requested the curtailment enforcement by mine regulators.
Murray has been a major donor to the Trump campaign and GOP political activities.
Murray’s meeting with Perry, some portion of the documents and the substance of his requests have been widely reported. But the new documents released confirm reports of Murray’s influence and the alignment of his interests with the Trump administration’s.

I’d also like to add this fundraiser from the Minneapolis Foundation for businesses on the North side of Minneapolis!
Lake Street Council has been doing a great job of supporting the businesses there, but the North side needs a little more help (as of now, they’ve raised $142,084 of their $1,000,000 goal).
AND Covenant Community Church is also taking grocery donations every day for the North Side, if you live in MN and can spare anything.
(The two pictures basically restate everything I’ve said, but if you want something else to look at/keep— left picture is from a high school friend’s instagram story [she recently moved back to the Twin Cities, so I trust her], and right picture is from the fundraiser site.)
I’m so glad people are continuing to donate!
Putting the fundraiser link again here for good measure: https://giving.onecause.com/public/02ad4737-2285-4ad2-91c6-95cd66b423bf/fundraisers/c60e5030-69ce-4853-8b11-4727da5054ad/donate
so direct action is not an option available to you. what can you do right now instead?
Be mindful of the content you’re putting on your social media accounts. Stop retweeting/reposting violent images and videos of black people dying. Know that content like this, even with trigger warnings included, can be very emotionally disturbing/distressing and yes, even traumatic, for black people navigating the internet right now.
Report any images and videos you see where protestors’ faces are visible/unblurred, particularly in content surrounding the lootings. Don’t retweet or repost these images and videos. This can be a death sentence.Â
DONATE, PARTICULARLY TO MINNESOTA-BASED BLACK YOUTH MOVEMENTS / MUTUAL AID FUNDS WHO ARE DOING WORK ON THE GROUND. FOLLOW/BOOST IF YOU CAN’T.
• The Minnesota Freedom Fund, a mutual aid group fighting back against the unjust MN bail system, is taking donations. (Twitter)
• The Black Visions Collective, a Minnesota-based freedom fighter organization creating campaigns for justice, is taking donations. (Twitter)
• Reclaim the Block, a coalition to demand that Minneapolis divest from policing, is taking donations. (Twitter)
• Crowdfunding for black trans people in need thread.Â
• Comprehensive Minnesota bail fund/support document for May and June.

RGV insults Chiranjeevi again, says Khaidi No 150 poster very narcissistic
Ram Gopal Varma is in news again. Known for his controversial tweets, the Satya filmmaker has once again rubbed his shoulders with megastar Chiranjeevi.
Recently, the maverick filmmaker made headlines when he took a dig at Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan after watching Aamir Khan's Dangal.

Earlier to this, Ram Gopal Varma, who called Chiranjeevi 'mega dumb', had apologised to Chiru fans after the release of the first look of Khaidi No 150.
In Khaidi No 150, which is a remake of Tamil film Kaththi, Chiranjeevi will reprise actor Vijay's role and will be seen in a double role.
Directed by VV Vinayak, the film also stars Kajal Aggarwal and Tarun Arora in important roles.
Jointly produced by Ram Charan and Lyca Productions, the film is scheduled for a worldwide release on Sankranti.

Major Project Usability Testing
After various iterations and stages of my Bookmark app. I sent the version 2 of my app which I created as a wireframe component level to several different people.
Prototype link for User Testing-
https://xd.adobe.com/view/bf60c4da-b974-40e0-69ce-df9eec1aefb5-c951/
Initial Feedback
When deciding who was best suited to ask for my user testing, I decided to try and get at least 2/3 of my different age categories so that I know the layout/ sizing of my components are easily discoverable by more than just one age group of people!
Gemma, 23-year-oldÂ
It looks very sleek! It's easy to navigate and it's not too busy  I'd say maybe consider a complementary colour/diff shade of grey to highlight the book, names or stars, just to give a little extra something. Â
Gemma was able to easily navigate through it very well and knew when to scroll down etc without any issues.Â
Jake - 25 year old
Jake encountered a problem when clicking the settings button on the profile page as it displayed the Profile/ Friends tab despite being unnecessary for a Settings page.Â
So I removed these two buttons in order to solve this minor issue. As they aren’t necessary when the settings page is to edit and make changes to the user’s general profile page.
Confusing input fields - Adjust Goal Screen
I need to input a start and finish date on goals adjust page as the user found it confusing with just the input dates already there, without any clarification as to what the dates stood for. He wasn’t aware of what they were so I needed to explain, which isn’t a positive response.
My solution
So to solve this I could possibly leave them blank, to begin with, and then show the next screen with the information filled out. I can also just the input field titles -
E.g Start date -
End date - I could then add the feature of a pop-up calendar so that users can actually click their start and end date and visually see it when they are setting it.
Issue with Achievements
Will users be able able to share their reading goals onto their profile? Or will the people they are friends with be able to see what your reading goal is and the progress you are making with the reading goal you have set yourself?Â
Obviously, this is something I should probably consider as it’s part of a gamification element. That other users should be able to see what progress you are making. But then there should also be the option to hide this as some people may not want this visible on their profile.
Achievements should be displayed on the users' profile page so that people can the badges they get and it would also motivate them to continue their reading habits.
Category Filter for Books
Delete review written unnecessarily in filter options - too many options to filter by that it’s overwhelming for users to see and choose from. So I’ll definitely need to put more work into the filter system for the next iteration of my prototype.
My solution
Change Sort By - too many categories and redesign it so it’s as a drop-down menu instead? Choose the most important filters - So:
Title - a-z
author a -zÂ
published date
ratings
Option to edit information on profile page to show the before and after, once the user has inputted the text.
Sean - 30 year old
Looks really cool! Nice and clean interface, very sleek  I think on the “profile” page some things might need centered a bit? At least that’s how it looked on mobile, and only a tiny bit because I’m a perfectionist.
Overall I still have quite a bit of work to do, but I feel like I’m at least on the right track now.
