Seal
William Jay Smith
See how he dives
From the rocks with a zoom!
See how he darts
Through his watery room
Past crabs and eels
And green seaweed,
Past fluffs of sandy
Minnow feed!
See how he swims
With a swerve and a twist,
A flip of the flipper,
A flick of the wrist!
Quicksilver-quick,
Softer than spray,
Down he plunges
And sweeps away;
Before you can think,
Before you can utter
Words like "Dill pickle"
Or "Apple butter",
Back up he swims
Past sting-ray and shark,
Out with a zoom,
A whoop, a bark;
Before you can say
Whatever you wish,
He plops at your side
With a mouthful of fish!
"Reflections on a Gift of Watermelon Pickle... And Other Modern Verse" - compiled by Stephen Dunning, Edward Lueders, and Hugh Smith

Elephant Seal Viewing Point, CA (No. 7)
In California, the population is continuing to grow at around 6% per year, and new colonies are being established; they are now probably limited mostly by the availability of haul-out space. Their breeding was probably restricted to islands, before large carnivores were exterminated or prevented from reaching the side of the ocean. Numbers can be adversely affected by El Niño events and the resultant weather conditions, and the 1997–98 El Niño may have caused the loss of about 80% of that year's pups. Presently, the northern elephant seal is protected under the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act and has a fully protected status under California law (California Fish and Game Code [FGC] § 4700).
While the population is rising in the state of California, some colonies farther south are experiencing declining populations, likely due to rising sea and air temperatures. In Baja California, the two largest colonies, in Guadalupe and San Benito, have seen consistently declining numbers for the past two decades. Seeing as populations farther north are consistently increasing, it has been hypothesized that this discrepancy is due to a change in migration patterns. As sea and air temperatures rise, Northern elephant seals may not be migrating as far south as they have previously. The climate is expected to continue warming, and southern populations are expected to continue falling.
Populations of rookery sites in California have increased during the past century. At Año Nuevo State Park, for example, no individuals were observed whatsoever until 1955; the first pup born there was observed in the early 1960s. Currently, thousands of pups are born every year at Año Nuevo, on both the island and mainland. The growth of the site near San Simeon has proved even more spectacular; no animals were there prior to 1990. Currently, the San Simeon site hosts more breeding animals than Año Nuevo State Park during winter season.

It's half past 3 a.m and I have both russian AND literature tomorrow (easily my worst subjects [not counting exact sciences and maths] with a teacher who fucking hates me) and yet I'm still awake
Why?
Because the lore of my mermaid AU is expanding and I'm practically vibrating with how excited I am to indulge in it all

You would think this face is for something like burgers or a steak but no. This is the face Arthur makes when he hears there's seaweed he can use to make bara lawr with. He loves it, it's one of his favorite foods.

I love sharks! :) they have been my special interest for almost 5 years! I love how diverse they are. Over 500 different species with different lifestyles :) they have cool adaptions and skills: they can sense electric impulses from the muscles of living creatures and they can sense water vibrations, they're smarter than we first thought, they are older than trees and rings of Saturn and yet there is still lots of misinformation about them. Some sharks can produce or reflect light and few species eat seaweed and seagrass! Sharks live pretty much anywhere and I especially love deep sea sharks like goblin shark, frilled shark and Greenland shark :) Sharks may not take care of their babies or shark pups after they are born but before the birth shark moms make lots of work to make sure their pups are born as strong. Shark's pregnancy is often one year or more so that the pups have time to develop and some egg-laying sharks put their eggs into safe hides so that predators don't find them. Sharks give birth in areas, where pups are safe and can find lots of food while growing.
Please info dump on this post!!
I know a lot of times people autistic/neurodivergent people feel like they have to apologize for their interests and I want to help change that.
I genuinely want to hear about your interests! I want to hear the "fun facts" and the lore of really specific media. Don't shy away from including details, you can write out a whole essay and I'll read every word. Just share about something you like unapologetically!

African Sea Forest Named One of the 7 Wonders of the World.
Bloomberg has released its list of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and the kelp forests, also known as the Great African Sea Forest, are a special mention.
Located just 10 miles from Cape Town, South Africa, the kelp forests are a diverse and fascinating ecosystem. They are made up of kelp, a type of brown seaweed that grows to very large sizes. They grow on the ocean floor and can reach lengths of up to 150 feet. These seaweeds thrive in shallow, clear waters at low temperatures.
As the seaweeds grow, they form what we call a forest. The African Sea Forest serves a similar function to its Californian counterpart, providing food and shelter for a variety of marine life, from game species like lobsters, crayfish, and abalone to large predators like the Cape fur seal. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the Great African Sea Forest is the diversity of shark species that call these pseudo-arboreal environments home. The forest is home to a number of rarely seen shark species, including the charismatic pyjama catshark and the shy spotted gully shark. Between the African Sea Forests are stunning reefs with gullies and channels.
