Basecamp Belltown Prep What show preparation looks like in my world. Lots of sketches and drafts planning the show layout and never feeling like I have enough pieces while I'm desperately feeling like I need to create "the right piece for the right space🤣 Which is funny for everyone who knows that I have MORE than enough work and the night before my show opens, I'll be in my studio creating "breakthrough" pieces that are sure to change the context of the show that I've already spent weeks planning. Some of my favorite photos from my tour of the Seattle Underground in 2011! (I just found the memory card).

If you’re not from Seattle, you may not know there was a HUGE fire in 1889 that essentially wiped out the whole downtown area. Seattle was built mostly on filled-in tidelands, so it made more sense to build on top of the existing city. This raised the street level, and would help to prevent flooding which had become a common problem during high-tide. 

Seattle now has a never-ending basement underneath the city. With passageways that have had many different uses over the years, from storage to prostitution, many of which are closed off at this point. But there are plenty of tunnels that are still open and available to tour, and it’s definitely worth it if you’re in the area!

Looking out at one of the historic buildings in Pioneer Square, Seattle from an alleyway where we came up from the Seattle Underground. Pioneer Square was once the heart of the city as Seattle’s founders settled here originally in 1852. In 1889, a cabinetmaker accidentally overturned and ignited a gluepot which started the Great Seattle Fire 🔥 that destroyed 31 blocks as most of the buildings were wooden. When rebuilding the city, the city leaders decided that all new buildings would be brick or stone and they would build all new buildings one or two stories above the original street grade. Some of the buildings also had two entrances, one on the first floor, and another on the second floor. Pioneer Square had originally been built on filled-in tidelands, so the streets were often flooded. The new street level also assisted in ensuring that gravity-assisted flush toilets that funneled into Elliott Bay did not back up at high tide. Pioneer Square today is actually a level above where the original buildings were before 1889, and Bill Speidel’s Underground Tour takes visitors down under the current ground level to see some of the old store fronts and ruins. #seattle #pioneersquare #seattleunderground #washingtonstate (at Pioneer Square Seattle)

I find this photo outrageously entertaining. Yesterday @marxist70 took me to Highline to meet some folks and see Pill Brigade and Stoneburner. (Awesome although I missed Stoneburner.) At one point at the bar he said, "We never took any pictures of us together without me in a hood." I snorted. "...I think someone has said that to me before XD :X " Then, I end taking this picture, in which I have striking contrast to Mark's exhuberance with my morbid face.
