MORE RANDOM THINGS IM INTO
WHATS UP GUYS GALS GAYS AND THEYS its ya boy, here with more random stuff I am into and want to talk to other people about at 12 am on a saturday
did you know Sears used to sell houses?  yea, and I bet if you live in the midwest you have seen HUNDREDS of them, might have even lived in one (lucky)
Tumblr media
this is what the ads for them looked like, and this is just one of like 100 plans they sold. theyre called Sears KIT homes because what would happen is they would ship a rail car with everything in it, and instructions, and because it was the 1910s to 1950s you would just rent a truck and take it to your lot and then you, your neighbors, and your family would build it. novel
Tumblr media
honestly I got really into them about uh....a yearish ago? I had just started working at a big tax firm here in Indianapolis (I got laid off, they purged a team after a manager left, company was a lot more scummy then I assumed) well basically I had a bit of extra money and the housing balloon hadnt gotten this bad yet. Well me and the waifu were looking at houses, theyre cheap as shit here in indiana and we found this beautiful sears house from the 1930s that was just.....guys it was perfect, they wanted 100k, 3% down was reasonable, but it got scooped out from under us, and well....just as well. Got laid off like two months later, wouldve been nightmarish if that happened after we got a house. Luckily I got my new job shortly after, grace of god sort of thing, better paying job nicer office, less scummy work. it looked like this, wouldve been a wonderful home
Tumblr media
it is on my list of things I want to own one day, feel like turning a sears home into my perfect little mid century modern pad would fill some hole in my graphic designer/ aesthetically obsessed brain. I mean dont get me wrong, I would love something that looked like the fuckin farnsworth house, but I think going more conservative is likely a good idea when it comes to a house, resale value etc
Tumblr media
well thats about it, still working on actually doing that youtube channel idea, it’ll happen. give it time.  love you guys, have a good night

You used to be able to buy a pretty nice house from us for $1,528, or around $27,586 in today's money. You'd buy the house, which would arrive as materials on a train, and you'd pay for land to put it on and labor to build it. You could even build it yourself, if you had the time and skill.

as much as I love history and Chicago history especially, I do sometimes forget how recent everything here is. I was at the Hull House Museum with a friend of mine the other day, and we had a wonderful time listening to the curator talk about the birth of social work, the women who drove it forward, and the ghost stories that haunt their stomping grounds despite no one really dying there.
As we were walking around after the tour, my friend pointed out that Jane Addams' dress (the one on display in that room, black and small and otherwise unremarkable) had an uneven hem. "Oh, good eye!" the curator, who was walking alongside us, exclaimed. "Addams' tuberculosis left her with some spinal curvature, even after corrective surgery. She had most of her dresses altered to ensure the hem would be straight when she wore them---but on a standard dress form, the hem looks uneven."
"I always forget that having a tailor or dressmaker was considered typical back then," I said.
"No, by that point it was much more common to buy a dress from Sears and have it altered," the curator replied cheerfully. "That's what Addams did."
The whole exchange was maybe a few seconds, but it sticks with me even now. The idea that Jane Addams bought a dress from Sears---where I have also bought dresses, where my mother bought dresses---makes me feel insane. And yet, we're only talking about a hundred years ago or so. Is it so unreasonable that I, as a disaffected teen, was drifting through racks of mass-produced garments, just as Jane Addams did a century before? The exact location of the hands making those garments has changed of course; the workers' protections that Addams' contemporaries fought for have resulted in offshoring that work to less-guarded parts of the world. But it gives me a strange sort of fellow feeling to think about it, all these many decades later.

I was trying to place Teddy Sears and just realized he’s one of the gay ghosts from AHS: Murder House. The one that was cheating on Zachary Quinto with JungleJim4322
So technically Brilliant Minds is a weird AHS Hospital AU

Me: Is this Farmer Boy sequel written in 2012 really going to be able to feel like a legitimate follow-up to the style and atmosphere of the original, or is it just another modern cash-grab?
Heather Williams, on page 2: Best of all, he knew that fall meant crispy spareribs and sweet cider and hot roasted potatoes with melting butter and all the pumpkin pie he could eat.
Me: ....it looks like I can trust you. Carry on.

David left them a hefty sum in his will. After thinking it over, Maria decided to use part of it to move into a larger house, one with three bedrooms so the twins can each have their own space as they get older. Maria shared a room with her own twin brother for years, so she understands the appeal of having your own room, even if it's small.

there are some things that inherently have a lot of Feeling to me and it's weird realizing that it's not unusual or uncommon for this to not be the case for people but it's also strange because it's hard not to react to things like old floorboards or old brick structures or the interiors of dilapidated houses. like, the self control it takes to not swoon in some sort of overwhelming reverence....what do you mean you don't feel it too

Got an advanced copy of my next book. It’s called Hearing Things, it’s about a young field recording enthusiast and his cat who visit a haunted house, and it’s out in September from Toon Books. Preorder now at your local bookstore, or online at one of those big book places.

I picked up Dragon Age: Veilguard on my lunch break today, but also some steeply marked down chicken drumsticks at the sell-by date. I have celery and onions that I need to use up, so now I'm making chicken wild rice soup for dinner while I try to figure out these controls (bc I'm mentally stuck on Jedi Survivor's controller mapping)
