Father’s Day special: Under the Waves
~ ~
Our twentieth Spring Vignettes piece celebrates Father’s Day, which is on June 18th.
Before you read what the piece was intended to portray, share what it portrays to _you_. I’m just the artist; you’re the beholder.
~ ~
For those of you whose ichthyology is rusty, seahorses are known for a very unusual quirk of their reproductive biology: When mating, the female lays eggs into a specialized gestation-chamber in the male’s abdomen; and the male then carries the eggs to term inside his own body. When the eggs hatch, the male gives birth, and the itty bitty fully-formed seahorses are born into the water.
This makes seahorses a very rare example of male pregnancy in the animal kingdom, found only in seahorses and their close relatives. Why this reproductive strategy is advantageous for seahorses, and not for other fish, is debated by marine biologists.
Fatherhood, at large, is a relatively rare concept in nature; among mammals, paternal care is the exception, not the rule; but it is surprisingly common among fish. The reasons for this are debated.
Seahorses are found in coral reefs, kelp forests, and estuaries, where they can use their little prehensile tails to hold onto things. Coral reef seahorses include the yellow tigertail seahorse (Hippocampus comes), which is found in tropical coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific region. These are extremely biodiverse habitats, home to a great diversity of species.
Cnidarians are well-represented in this scene. The tiny colonial filter-feeders that build coral reefs over millennia are cnidarians; including those that form the foliate “lettuce leaf” coral in the near foreground, and the staghorn corals in the far foreground.
As for the undulated flaring fan-shaped corals in the mid-foreground, I’m afraid I may have accidentally made them up. I thought there was a coral that looked like this; but I can’t seem to find one. I may have been inspired by the flower Celosia argentea var. cristata, one cultivar of which is appropriately called “Coral Reef Celosia”. Due to its fasciation or “cresting”, this variant does have this undulated fanning shape, reminiscent of some elkhorn corals.
In the right foreground, we see several sea anemones, another cnidarian. These are probably magnificent sea anemones (Heteractis magnifica). Among the tentacles of one sea anemone, there are two pink skunk clownfish (Amphiprion perideraion). Like other anemonefish, they are symbiotic with sea anemones; living inside them for protection, without being stung, and in return cleaning the anemone of parasites, providing nitrogen, and even helping the anemone breathe and feed by moving water through it.
Anemonefish are protandrous hermaphrodites, spending the first period of their lives as males, and becoming females later in life. They live in groups consisting of a single female and a number of males, with only the largest male permitted to breed. If the female is lost, one of the largest males will become female to take her place, and the next-largest male will become the new breeding male.
A third cnidarian is found in the upper right background; several jellyfish, possibly Indonesian sea nettles (Chrysaora chinensis), about to be munched by a green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas). Young green sea turtles eat a great quantity of jellyfish and other prey, whereas older green sea turtles eat various algae and aquatic plants. Due to the inward-pointing spines in their throats, green sea turtles never fail to eat their prey; but unfortunately, this also prevents them from spitting out plastic bags, which also look exactly like jellyfish.
The large school of swallow-tailed fish swimming among the kelp consists of anthias, possibly princess anthias (Pseudanthias smithvanizi). In contrast to anemonefish, anthias are protogynous hermaphrodites, spending the first period of their lives as females, and becoming males later in life. Even when they school together in large numbers, they divide themselves into small groups (or “harems”) consisting of one dominant male, several subdominant males, and a number of females. If the dominant male is lost, the subdominant males and the largest females will compete to become the next dominant male.
Behind the kelp, there is a giant pacific octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini). They grow to be the largest octopuses, and possibly the most intelligent of all invertebrates. Female octopuses breed only once in their lives; after laying a clutch of eggs, they vigilantly guard them, clean them, and circulate water over them, not leaving them unattended even to eat; and around the time the eggs hatch, they usually die of starvation. It is extremely unusual for a solitary animal to be highly intelligent; almost all highly intelligent animals are social; but octopuses are the one curious exception. If they had the opportunity to learn from their parents, they would be unstoppable.
Finally, in the lower left foreground, there can be seen two purple sea urchins (most likely Echinostrephus molaris). These are echinoderms, related to starfish, such as those seen in the frame. Echinoderms are notable for having bilateral symmetry as larvae, like fish and humans, but having radial symmetry as adults, like jellyfish and sea anemones. When they metamorphose, their left-hand side grows into their radially symmetrical adult body, and their right-hand side disappears.
The frame is formed out of starfish and kelp. Kelp may appear very plant-like, but it is actually a giant multicellular brown alga; not closely related to green algae or their land-dwelling plant relatives.
Parenthood certainly varies greatly from species to species. Life is unbelievably varied in every way imaginable.

I have never seen a mid-century modern rustic home like this 1977, very dated, very large, house in Sekiu, Washington. Note the wires anchoring the roof down. 5bds, 3ba, $825K. Whoever buys this home will more than likely have to embrace the dated features, or completely gut the place. Take a look at this one.
This home is nothing if not funky. I don't know how you'd decorate it, but only if it wasn't so dark. Anyway, this is the entrance foyer. At first I thought that those were seahorses on the doors, but I think they're just patterns in the wood.
This is a large living room. I have no idea if those things going up along the stairs have any purpose.
And, off to the side is a large stone fireplace. It's a little weird b/c the foil wallpaper was the height of decor in the 70s, but it doesn't necessarily match the rustic style of this house.
I have never seen a sunken rec room.
Appliances in this corner make a kitchenette.
And, the rest is over here. Look at the interesting mosaics.
Down this hall are some bedrooms.
I am amazed that they left this cool headboard in the primary bedroom. There's a vintage intercom system on the wall, too.
The bathroom is funky and it's also carpeted.
Hall to more bedrooms.
This one has a feature wall.
The bath has interesting tile cabinetry.
There's a sink in the corner of this room, but it may be another bedroom., b/c there are only 3 baths.
The real estate photos show more detailed closeups than full rooms, like this sink.
And, this door and shower curtain.
The home features a sauna.
This is quite a large room. That counter looks like an upside down tree stump.
This looks like a hot tub b/c it has a cover.
Outside under the house is an outdoor kitchen.
Large driveway and garage in the back of the home.
The house is on 2.89 acres of land.
View of the Straits of Juan de Fuca.
And, there's a marina. Doesn't the house look like the Stealth Bomber from up here?

Descriptions & preview pics under the cut:
EA Kelp as Edible Raw Meat for Vampires (Nona Dried Food Mod REQUIRED)
If you use the Nraas Hybrid mod to make mermaid-vampire sims, it's a headache getting them to eat a effing thing that's not plasma-based. So I took EA's Kelp mesh and slapped Nona's script on it, to make it "raw food" that can fill a vampire's Thirst need. (I HIGHLY recommend also using Nona's other raw foods--there's a nice juicy fish vamps can eat, which I used in my IWTV post here.)
Severinka Hippocampus as IP EP Jetski (IP EP REQUIRED)
(The harness mesh was shamelessly ripped/reshaped from Mermaidia's Seahorse Taxi. I didn't place the handles as well as I probably should have, but oh frikkin well.) I was too lazy to make this fully recolorable (you can kinda sorta recolor it, since I put the textures in the Multiplier not the Overlay)--but it does come in 4 color variations:
TheVintageSim Fringe Hammock REDONE (Functional Loveseat)
I've been wanting this decor hammock as a functional loveseat for frikkin ever. This gameplay gave me the perfect excuse to bite the bullet and make it. The mesh is rescaled to fit EA loveseats. Fully recolorable, comes in multiple variations, like the original.
Pocci's Jellyfish
I was so jealous that Pocci remade their TS3 Jellyfish ceiling lights for TS4 without the obnoxious strings dangling from the ceiling, so I went and made their Jellyfish 01 & 02 stringless myself. Then I made the Jellyfish as a Teddy Bear. The clipping & joints aren't great, but it works and I'm tired.
Venus Girdle Inspired Table Light
It's amazing, the kind of IRL deep-sea critters you learn about, just by reading mermaid fanfiction.
Wall Mosaics 1x5
They come in a bunch of variations. Two are based on IRL portions of the Madaba Map, for no good reason, other than I just needed a medievalesque mosaic map #ForReasons.
Ivy as Ceiling Light
I made sure there were no backfaces on the ivy mesh, so you could still see inside the lot from a bird's eye view. (I used these with the TW3 Bulb Lights I converted here.)
Simszoo Tree REDONE (RECOLORABLE as Outdoor Light)
I made this tree recolorable and an outfoor light--I wish I knew how to make only the leaves glowe, not the whole frikkin trunk. Ah well.
Pocci Sakura Vase REDONE (Translucent)
All I did was change the texture of the flowers so they were crystal/see-through.
And that's that!

Waterdeep Style & Culture (part one)
I've been working on pinning down some aesthetics/cultures connected to Baldur's Gate 3 and the Forgotten Realms in general. Y'all voted that you'd like to see my ideas on Waterdeep FIRST so here ya go.
I (and many others) have spoken about Gale Dekarios being INCREDIBLY Greek coded, even before you find out the Dekarios bit. So in my mind, Waterdeep is deeply Greek coded. First, Chessenta does exist in Faerûn and is very openly Hellenistic/Greek inspired.
There will be pretty pictures & stuff, promise, but first let's talk about concepts of Greek myth & early society & how it relates to our Wizard of Waterdeep.
Themes/Ideals
Art and artistry served the gods and gods made people in their image and of course in Greek mythology gods and especially demigods loved to be a mess in, on, around, or about mere mortals. The parallels there are obvious… Gale speaks first of feeling the Weave, of composing with it. It’s art and artistry to HIM, regardless of any limitations, codes, or creeds Mystra or anyone else might try to put around it. Another parallel is the concept of Arete. Arete refers to the journey to personal excellence. It’s a belief that everyone is called to be the absolute best version of themself, with the acknowledgement that that is different for every living creature, and from person to person. Do we perhaps know a wizard who takes that perhaps too seriously and has been historically manipulated and controlled around that concept? Hmmmm.
Aesthetics
Greek Arts
Mosaics, Tiles, painted everything. Bold and natural. There’s a sharp contrast between the fine lines of Waterdeep’s architecture, the precision needed for its docks, its ships, and the boldness of its artistry, applied to all things. Art is meant to be seen, experienced. And all art there needs to survive winds and storms all kissed with the salt of the sea.
My general idea of seafaring/fisherman communities and the specificity of Greek inspiration, especially mosaics, leads me to imagine a Waterdeep that utilizes clear motifs, themes, and symbols. You can already see from the photos I selected above that images reflect the natural surroundings but also lend themselves to myth. Even in busier, more detailed work, there are figures that STAND OUT!
Clothing (symbols, structure, some talk of status, jewelry below)
Here’s an excerpt from a fic where I have Gale lay out a typical, representative Waterdeep dinner. Here, I utilized my ideas about folk/mythological symbolism and its use in even an artistry most of us don't event think about, dishware and such:
“Come and see,” Gale extends a hand, unnecessary for a walk through the foyer and kitchen and into the dining area but Tav takes it eagerly. Tav gives a genuine sigh of awe at the table before her. This gladdens him. He meets her own sigh with one of his relief. She lets go of his hand to circle the table. It was simple illusory magic but Gale took care in making a series of ethereal fish in blues and golds seemingly swimming just above the scene, a few of them circling playfully around the candelabra in the center of the table. The table itself Gale had lain with a gold runner with embroidered blue waves and copper boats along its length, a very old tapestry motif that had been popular in Waterdeep before Gale’s time. Still, it was handmade with care by his own grandfather. He resists the urge to tell Tav this in great detail, wanting instead to be present. He focuses on how charmed Tav seems by the space. On either side of the candelabra Gale had placed two wine goblets, bronze with inlaid seahorses the likes of which donned ships during Waterdeep’s parade seasons, which Tav had not yet experienced. A carafe sat on the corner of the table, covered in hand painted seahorses of a less stylized nature.
Clothing
symbols and structures
I think these symbols extend to clothing as well, perhaps less on the day to day (though I don’t think Waterdeep has a concept of being overdressed in so far as having prints, patterns, and embroidered details go). Embroidery is reminiscent of the mosaic and tile arts, taking turn with repetitive detail or focusing in on one figure or symbol. I won't get too much into jewelry for now but I do think small jewelry pieces might be used to signify rank and status in various arenas of Waterdeep life (and this is something that happens in a few magic school campaigns for Forgotten Realms), using specific coins or beads to communicate anything from authority to "first time caster, please be kind" and "this bard breaks suddenly to jam" to which district a person is representing. This is an especially impactful idea to me because I imagine that Gale may have given up all these other pieces, including signifiers of House Dekarios and his achievements at Blackstaff to solely represent Mystra once he became Chosen. I've also included some of Elia Fernandez's ASOIAF women art because of the specific way they use house sigils. Dynamic, colorful symbols.
I imagine summers are hot so you want clothes to have enough structure to SERVE and to have a base if you want to strip down OR add light linens for more protection from the sun. I want to combine the silhouettes we see from ancient Greece- cloaks and tunics and, yes, shapes similar to the Roman toga- with the flowing structure we see of the wizard robes we encounter in Baldur’s Gate 3.
As a note, I think Waterdeep- partly by virtue of having so many places where people go to train as monks, bards, wizards, etc so having a huge uniformed student population, partly by virtue of having a canon drag scene- considers most pieces of fashion to be non-gendered. So any of the silhouettes included here, be they skirts, deep Vs, corsets, underbust details, etc, I'm assuming are flexible to and socially normal/accepted for any gender expression.
Lastly (for this round), here's a color palette for our Waterdeep aesthetics thus far.
I have a part two outlined that I hope I'll get to soon! It will be influenced by another island culture with a rich art/textile history and open us up to more fashion subcultures and how they reflect the working class and more physical studies of Waterdeep.
Feel free to let me know what else you might be interested in a series like this. Would you like more jewelry? Are you interested in interiors? any other specific elements of culture you'd like aesthetics for? Any time periods irl speak to you when you think of Waterdeep?
Thank you to those who voted to see this first and to anyone who reblogs or chit chats. If you'd like to support my sanity and so make it easier for me to do bigger fun things like this, I'm on ko-fi and Twitch and won't look a donation or support horse in the mouth.

How to Be a Real Life Mermaid 🌊🧜♀️🐚
The Look
🐚 Wear sea foam green, aquamarine, teal, ocean blue, soft grey, lilac, periwinkle, emerald, pale gold, white, deep blue, and turquoise
🐚 Pick flowy fabrics such as taffeta, chiffon, linen, silk, muslin, and sequined fabrics that resemble fish scales
🐚 Choose garments like maxi dresses, flowy skirts, bandeau off-the-shoulder tops, tank tops, soft scarves used as tops, shell clutches, woven bags, and pretty beaded sandals
🐚 Accessorise with jewellery made from pearls, sea glass, seashells, turquoise, aquamarine, opals, gold that resembles the sun glinting on the sea, and silver that reminds one of the metallic sheen of fish scales. Examples of accessories you can wear are bangles, anklets, layered necklaces, and pearl earrings
🐚 Makeup Ideas: eyeshadow in nudes like a sandy beach, greens and blues like the sea, or lavender and pink like a coral reef, shimmery highlight, dewy skin, coral pink lipstick, and seashell pink lipgloss
🐚 Hair Ideas: loose curls that look like ocean waves, fishtail plaits, green and blue hair dye, pearl hairclips, and sea salt hairspray. Brush your hair with a pretty wide-tooth comb.
The Lifestyle
🐚 Listen to songs such as Martha's Harbour by All About Eve, No Ordinary Love by Sade, Come Into the Water by Mitski, Pearl Diver by Mitski, Mariners Apartment Complex by Lana Del Rey, and Call of the Sea by Claudie Mackula (a longer mermaid playlist is here).
🐚 You can also listen to the sounds of the ocean, like whale song or waves crashing on the beach
🐚 Watch movies and TV shows such as Aquamarine, Splash, The Little Mermaid, H20: Just Add Water, Mr Peabody and the Mermaid, Miranda (1948), Mermaid Melody Pitchi Pitchi, Ponyo, Barbie in a Mermaid Tale, Barbie: The Pearl Princess, Neptune's Daughter (1914), A Daughter of the Gods (1916), Queen of the Sea (1918), Venus of the South Seas (1924), and Magic Island (1995)

🐚 Make your home smell like the deep sea too, with sea salt scented diffusers and candles such as Yankee Candle Sea Minerals, Yankee Candle Seaside Woods, or Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt
🐚 Home Decor Ideas: silk sheets in blue, grey, and sea green, seashell jewellery trays, homemade terrariums, jellyfish embroidery, seashell candles, beaded curtains made from string and shells, paintings of maritime scenes, glass vases filled with layers of sand, seashells, and faux pearls, seashell shaped soap dishes, rattan furniture, woven baskets, treasure chests to keep your valuables in, mermaid figurines, a seashell or jellyfish mobile, a bowl filled with seashells, a glass bottle filled with ocean water or with a love letter inside to replicate a message in a bottle, mosaics with marine motifs like seahorses and shells, even an aquarium with colourful fish if you are able to care for them
🐚 Spend lots of time around near bodies of water, swimming in it to connect with your inner mermaid, or just walking in it and feeling the sand beneath your feet
🐚 Collect seashells and pretty pieces of sea glass thar wash up on the shore
🐚 Watch synchronised swimming, or even learn it yourself
🐚 Go diving, snorkeling, or mermaiding
🐚 Visit aquariums to see beautiful exotic fish and learn more about the ocean

🐚 Enjoy snacking on seaweed soup, coconut water, and Guylian seashell chocolates
🐚 Take luxurious baths with dead sea salt, seaweed masks, small white bath bombs that resemble pearls, a coconut scented candle, and calming music

Scuba Diving In Pondicherry: Become An Ocean Explorer In The French Capital Of India!
When one thinks of Pondicherry, images of charming streets, colonial architecture, and the serene Bay of Bengal often come to mind.
However, beneath the surface of this picturesque coastal town lies a world of wonder waiting to be discovered. Pondicherry scuba diving has rapidly gained popularity, offering a unique opportunity to explore the vibrant marine life, captivating shipwrecks, and underwater landscapes that make this destination an ocean explorer’s paradise.
Dive into the Depths….
Pondicherry’s underwater world is a mosaic of vibrant coral reefs, schools of fish, and historic shipwrecks that have become artificial reefs teeming with life. Whether you’re an experienced diver or a curious beginner, there’s an adventure awaiting you beneath the waves.
The Wrecks of Pondicherry: A Historical Dive
One of the highlights of Pondicherry’s diving scene is its shipwrecks. The town’s strategic location along ancient trade routes led to numerous maritime incidents, resulting in the sinking of several vessels over the centuries. These wrecks have now evolved into thriving ecosystems, attracting divers eager to explore both history and marine life.
The most famous wreck is the SS Rajputana, a British passenger steamship that met its fate in 1923. Now lying at a depth of around 26 meters, this site is an intriguing blend of history and biodiversity. Diving enthusiasts can expect to encounter lionfish, groupers, and barracudas while navigating the remnants of the ship.
Scuba Diving Pondicherry: A Kaleidoscope of Marine Life
For those seeking a vibrant underwater experience, Pondicherry’s coral reefs are a sight to behold.
