RAIDERS WIPED OUT AFTER 6 HOURS; VIETCONG WIDEN ATTACK ON CITIES
Tom Buckley, The New York Times, 31 January 1968
Tumblr media
SAIGON, South Vietnam — A 17-man Vietcong squad seized parts of the United States Embassy in the center of Saigon and held them for six hours early today.
The Vietcong, wearing South Vietnamese Army uniforms, held off American military policemen firing machine guns and rocket launchers. Finally the invaders were routed by squads of American paratroopers who landed by helicopter on the roof of the building.
Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker was taken from his residence about five blocks from the embassy to what was described as a secure area. The Associated Press reported. He returned to the embassy at 11 A.M., about two hours after the last enemy resistance was wiped out. Others of the embassy staff were also said to be safe. The American flag was raised in front of the embassy at 11:45 A.M., almost five hours later. The daring raid was the most dramatic of scores of attacks launched by enemy commando units that carried the Vietcong’s Lunar New Year offensive to the capital.
Fighting was continuing in Saigon at 2 P.M. local time (1 A.M., New York time.) A Vietcong squad, armed with a captured American machine gun and rocket launchers, was firing from among the concrete beams and pillars of a half completed hotel across the street from the Presidential Palace. i
Only scattered reports of American losses were available by mid-afternoon. The total was perhaps 40 men killed and twice as many wounded. The guerrillas forces were believed to number no more than 500.
Elsewhere in the country, heavy fighting was reported in the capitals of the five provinces of the I Corps area, the northernmost section of the country, and in several district towns there and in the Central Highlands cities of Banmethuot, Pleiku and Kontum.
Targets Widespread The raiders in Saigon, besides attacking the embassy, fought their way onto the grounds of the Presidential Palace. Waves of helicopters raked them with rockets and machine-gun fire.
The palace houses the executive offices of President Nguyen Van Thieu and Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky. The United States Embassy said the President was safe at an undisclosed place. The whereabouts of the Vice President was said to be unknown.
As the fighting raged, this correspondent was pinned down for 15 minutes behind a military police jeep as tracer bullets arched a few feet overhead. The bodies of at least two American military policemen lay perhaps 50 yards away. Vietcong and civilian dead also sprawled on the sidewalk.
Heavy fighting was also reported near the runway at Tansonnhut Airport, where an enemy company of about 100 men was making a suicide stand against a larger force of Vietnamese troops and American. military policemen. The field was closed to all but emergency flights.
A handful of commandos held out in the building housing the Saigon radio, only a few blocks from the embassy. Part of the structure was burning.
The attacks began at 3 A.M. .today. Eleven hours later, only fragmentary reports could be obtained of many of the guerrilla assaults that turned Saigon, a relatively placid island in a widening sea of war for the; past tow and a half years, into a battle ground.
Three American officers billets were attacked, as was the Philippine Embassy, the headquarters of the Vietnamese Navy, the Vietnamese Joint General Staff compound adjoining the airport, and the GiaJong Palace, which houses government offices.
The embassy attacked capped a night of terror unmatched since the overthrow of President Ngo Dinh Diem on Nov. 1, 1963.
Beginning at 3 A.M. with mortar fire and a rocket barrage, guerrillas also struck three American billets for officers, the Tansonnhut air base on the edge of the city, the compound of the South Vietnamese General Staff adjoining the airport, the Philippine Embassy, South Vietnamese Navy headquarters and the studios of the Saigon radio.
While early reports said the Vietcong had taken over the main embassy building, or chancery, Marine officers denied that this had occurred. The raiders rampaged through the consular section, still housed in prefabricated buildings on the ground, and through the lower floors of a villa occupied by Col. George Jacobson, the mission coordinator.
Gen. William C. Westmoreland, the American commander in Vietnam, visited the embassy grounds a few minutes after the American troops-had taken control. He said: “The enemy’s well-laid plans went afoul. All the enemy in the compound have been killed.”
Heavy fighting was reported elsewhere in the country.
Fighting was reported] throughout the former imperial capital, Hue. The Vietcong continued the attack begun yesterday in Hoian, with two battalions dug in around the! provincial hospital and in an adjoining Vietnamese army compound. Six companies of Korean marines were reported moving to the attack.
The attacks occurred on the second day of Tet, the Lunar New Year. Despite public warnings by the Saigon police that a terrorist assault could be expected last night in the aftermath of the enemy’s attacks on major cities, the raids seemed to have caught both the Americans and the South Vietnamese by surprise.
An American military-police battalion and the Saigon city police found themselves outgunned. Not until the arrival of the first helicopters at the embassy were any infantry troops, American or South Vietnamese, seen in the center of the city. There were no tanks or heavy weapons to meet the enemy.
Safety Was Key Aim The embassy compound, covering four acres, opened last September. The primary consideration in its construction was security—even down to the helicopter landing pad installed atop the Chancery, the compound’s main structure, so Ambassador Bunker would not have to travel through crowds that might sometimes be hostile.
While Saigon was being attacked, reports of raids elsewhere were flooding into the American mission. Targets included the Bienhoa airbase and the headquarters of the American II Field Force at Longbinh, northeast of the city.
Danang, the second-largest city in South Vietnam, came under heavy attack, a day after it was rocked by rocket and mortar barrages.
The South Vietnamese police had warned yesterday afternoon that attacks by guerrilla “suicide squads” were expected. American civilians had been told to remain indoors. Servicemen were already under orders to remain indoors to leave the streets clear for the celebration of Tet.
The downtown streets were quiet and deserted when the first mortar rounds exploded on the block-square grounds of the Presidential Palace.
New Assaults Reported Small-arms fire crackled in a dozen places. As the cannonade! continued, allied helicopter gun-ships swung overhead, sweeping enormous lights over the area.
The fresh wave or attacks was viewed by some officers as the start of a general offensive, intended to force the United States to the bargaining table or make it face the likelihood of a greatly expanded and more costly war.
The new raids came as coherent reports of yesterday’s sweeping raids became available.
Ground attacks, following mortar and rocket barrages had struck eight major cities—Danang, Nhatrang, Quinhon, Kontum, Hoian, Pleiku, Banmethout and Tuyhoa—between midnight and 4 A.M.
Then, instead of slipping away in the darkness, enemy formations continued to hold positions in all of them except Danang and Tuyhoa, with fighting reported continuing this morning. In the case of Kontum and Banmethuot, new assaults from outside the city were reported.
At Danang, South Vietnamese rangers and United States marines, supported by waves of helicopter gunships, pursued the retreating enemy through the southern outskirts of the city.
North Vietnamese snipers roamed the streets of Nhatrang 24 hours after attacking an American compound. Lieut. Gen. William R. Rosson, commander of the I Field Force, and Lieut. Gen. Myung Shin Chae, commander of South Korean ground forces, had narrowly escaped the raid.
The situation remained unclear in Tuyhoa, the capital of Phuyen Province on the central coast, and Banmethuot, the capital of Darlac Province in the Central Highlands, where the enemy also mounted apparently successful assaults.
In all the raids, the enemy displayed coordination and offensive strength without precedent in the war.
While South Vietnamese military and governmental installations bore the brunt of the attacks, the American command disclosed that several American installations had also been hit. These included an Army airfield nine miles north of Camranh Bay, the vast supply base that had been visited twice by President Johnson. It was regarded as the most secure area in the country.
While casualty reports were; incomplete and often contradictory, it appeared that American forces had escaped fairly lightly, with fewer than 50 men killed and perhaps 100 men wounded. South Vietnamese losses were probably heavier.
Although the enemy units generally achieved surprise, they took heavy casualties in the prolonged fighting that followed. The figure may reach a total of more than 500 enemy dead. Informed sources in Saigon regarded this as a bargain price for the enemy to have paid for the enormous blow scored! against Government prestige.
In response to the wave of attacks, the South Vietnamese Government canceled the 36-hour cease-fire it had ordered throughout the country for the Lunar New Year.
American forces at Khe Sanh and elsewhere along the demilitarized zone, in the Dakto region and in the border areas northwest of Saigon, had gone on full alert as soon as word of the attacks in the rear areas was received. But there was no attempt by the North Vietnamese units opposing them to stage coordinated assaults.
An especially heavy enemy attack was directed at Danang, in Quangnam Province, 370 miles northeast of Saigon. Gene Roberts, chief of the New York Times bureau in Saigon, reported from Danang that four Phantom jets and two Marine Corps Intruder jets, all-weather aircraft equipped with radar navigation systems, had been destroyed in a rocket barrage.
At Pleiku, the major air base and supply terminal for the Central Highlands, at least 50 buildings were reported afire by Army officials early in the morning. Hundreds of refugees were said to be roaming the streets.
At Kontum, a province capital 50 miles north of Pleiku on Highway 14, a Vietcong force estimated at two battalions, striking about 3 A.M., fired mortars at the airfield, seized the post office and other Government buildings and attacked the Soviet Vietnamese Army’s headquarters.
At Nhatrang, the brunt of an attack by a North Vietnamese and a Vietcong battalion apparently fell on two adjoining American compounds, one housing senior officers and the other a military-police company and a sector headquarters near the center of the city.
An interim report on casualties said that 12 Americans had been killed and 10 wounded, 71 Vietnamese soldiers killed and 123 irregulars wounded in the ambush. Sixty of the enemy were said to have died in the assault and 15 to have been taken prisoner.

Why should you book Beach front hotels in Danang Vietnam?
A beach front hotel in Vietnam will be the ideal spot for taking up adventurous sports in the sea waters. It is also the ideal location for you to launch your Vietnamese holidays that include the several visitors to the nearest temple ruin or a cave filled mountain. Danang Vietnam hotels are lined up on the coastline and My Khe Beach and the Non Nuoc beach host some of the top beach hotels in the entire Da Nang. So taking refuge in these posh hotels that have sea water lapping their front door should be the first choice as the seconds and thirds won’t give you as much pleasure.
Tumblr media
If you are a first timer to Da Nang it is better for you to enquire about the availability of hotel rooms and preferably beach front hotels in Danang Vietnam and it will reveal several of them. You have distinct advantages by staying in a beach front hotel as it will enable you the amazing sight of evening sunset over the horizon and while you take in the beach and the water during the day. Some of these hotels are within 10-15 minutes of drive from the center of the city and the city is connected to most of the tourist attractions via road or rail. My Khe, Non Nuoc & Da Nang City Centre house most of the hotels here and taking up a hotel room on the beach is what is suggested to first timers because you can’t get enough of the white sanded beaches here.
The sea view hotel in Danang Vietnam could be the most convenient as it allows you to enjoy major tourism sites equally. The hotels here could be hard to get during seasons though Da Nang beaches enjoy huge crowds around the year, the winters in Europe can make it difficult to book them. You have to be an early bird and book one of the hotels near the beach for this memorable sojourn. Call Mandila Beach Hotel by dialing +84 (0)236 730 6666 or sending email to [email protected] To find luxurious suites and deluxe rooms near the beach.

Naman Retreat Hay Hay Restaurant and bar is a project designed by VTN Architects. Beside the main linking road between Da Nang city and Hoi An old town, Naman retreat resort, a qualified coastal resort is located 16 km away from Da Nang international airport. Photography by Hiroyuki Oki
Naman Retreat is designed as a modern but peaceful tropical green resort complex. In an area of 3.4ha, the mission is to harmonize 80 bungalows, hotels, 6 VIP villas and another 20 villas. The concept of the resort is to provide physical and mental treatment for guests in nature’s friendly environment and with healthy activities such as spa, yoga, beach sports. To achieve a perfect atmosphere that enables guests the maximum purification of the body and mind, the resort was designed by a harmonious mix of greenery, natural stone and bamboo.
The Hay Hay Restaurant and Bar The building facing the main view to the beach and swimming pool serves as the dining space. This building has ground level capacity for 350 guests. This floor is the main dining hall that provides breakfast, lunch and dinners for both guests staying in the resort and guests who are passing by. There is also a basement that serves as a kitchen and technical floor.
The restaurant was designed with a diverse range of spaces created by the change in floor level and by the bamboo structure of the building. Large groups can enjoy dining together under the bamboo domes, a family or a couple can enjoy their meal at more private areas beside the conic columns, which visually divide the hall into intimate smaller spaces creating semi private areas. The restaurant also provides the outdoor space for those who would like to enjoy their meal under the sky. There are 2 rounded shapes sitting immersed in the pool facing the sea. To provide light during the daytime, there are glass skylights on top of each dome in the centre of the building that leads natural light into the dining space.
The main structure of the restaurant is designed by bamboo. The rectangular plan of the restaurant is composed of 29 conic shaped bamboo columns and 2 bamboo domes. All of the columns are connected by the pitched roof consisting of the straight bamboos in the grid system. We designed the glass facade supported by concrete columns inside to obtain a space that can be fully closed for airconditioning and yet still be connected with its surrounding exterior landscape.
The bamboo used in this resort were all naturally treated in situ. The process of treating the bamboo consists of bending by fire, soaking in water and fumigation. This procedure took 4 months to achieve a better quality of bamboo. The conic columns consist of inner straight bamboo columns, locally called “Luong”, and an outer surface created by bended bamboos, locally called “Tam Vong”. In order to get the most benefits from each type of bamboo, the design followed the features of each type. To overcome big spans, the “Luong” bamboo is more suitable as the poles can reach lengths of up to 8m and their diameters can reach up to 100 mm. For bending, the “Tam Vong” bamboo is a perfect choice, the diameter is smaller but the skin is thicker therefore the poles are very flexible to bend.

Today we went on a Jeep tour up to Ba Na Hills to see the Golden Bridge. The bridge was beautiful, but the rest of the area was a tourist trap! Oh well! Then we headed down the mountain back into Da Nang to a hole in the wall vegan restaurant where no one spoke any English, but one of the customers showed us what he was eating and we all ordered what he had! It was delicious!!!! For 5 of us to eat, it cost $3 total. That is crazy. The people were very friendly and it was all elderly women working back in the “kitchen” area.
Next we headed to Red Beach. Red Beach Base Area (also known as Camp JJ Books, Camp Haskins, Camp Viking, Paddock Compound or Red Beach Camp) is a complex of former U.S. Marines, Navy and Army and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) logistics and support bases northwest of Danang. The base was located along Highway 1, 8 km northwest of Danang at Red Beach, the site of the landing of the 9th Marine Regiment, the first US combat troops deployed to South Vietnam on 8 March 1965.
Then we drove up to Son Tra (Monkey) Mountain. It is a breath-taking national park in Da Nang that stands 693 metres above sea level. It’s a 35-minute drive from Da Nang, making it a popular retreat amongst locals and travellers looking to escape the heat and busy traffic of the city. Locally known as the Son Tra Peninsula, the verdant mountain is also surrounded by pristine beaches such as Bai Bac, Bai Nam, Bai But, and Tien Sa Beach.
The winding and inclining roads surrounding the mountain is a popular spot for motorcycling, but a powerful vehicle is required to reach the top. However, the journey is well-worth the effort as you’ll be greeted with panoramic views of Hi Van Mountain, Cham Island, Da Nang City and Son Tra Peninsula.
Meanwhile, hiking enthusiasts can enjoy the verdant jungle trails and also spot rare species such as rhesus macaques, long-tailed macaques, pygmy slow loris, and red-shanked douc langurs. It takes about four hours of moderate hiking from Bai Bac Beach to the mountain summit.
Monkey Mountain was a prominent observation base during the American-Vietnam War, housing two radar domes that are now taken over by the Vietnamese military as well as a helicopter pad, which makes for a cool lookout point.
We did see a red-shanked douc langur sunbathing on a tree stump. It was beautiful! It did not stick around. As soon as he saw us he took off. We also saw quite a few of some of the other monkeys that live in the area. We lucked out with having perfect weather for the day. We finished out our tour driving along the area that was called China Beach during the Vietnam War. The beach is actually called My Khe beach. Considered to be Vietnam's most picturesque beach, the white sandy 20-mile stretch of My Khe Beach was named by the American troops who visited during the Vietnam War for R&R.
In the evening we took a long walk around the river area and downtown Da Nang. We had a great dinner along the river, then walked over the dragon bridge before returning to our hotel.
Tomorrow we are off to Ho Chi Min City!
