Solarpunk and other Species

Or: Whalecome to the Whale Revolution (I guess)

Kinda going off what I wrote yesterday...

For those, who have not heard: Orcas have started to organize to sink boats and small ships. And they are strategic about it. Attacking the ships navigations system first and then punching holes into the hull.

It started about three weeks ago in the Mediterranean, but the information spread pretty fast among the species, by now having reached the US East Coast. And it seems they have started to recruit other whale species into it.

This kinda sounds like some shit out of a fantasy novel but, well... This is, what is happening now.

And I think this once again shows one thing we humans kinda tend to forget: A lot of animals are actually pretty darn intelligent. I am not saying that they have human intelligence, but they are intelligent and are capable of both complex thought and communicating complex ideas.

There are so many stories like this. Of animals so clearly having been able to convey complex information among them. Just because we are incapable of understanding them, does not mean they do not have this kind of ability.

And it is not just whales, who we at least someone pick as being intelligent creatures. Elefants are capable of this. A lot of different ravens are. Sharks, too. Even though they are solitary animals, we have seen such behavior and the ability to exchange information with one another in sharks as well. Oh, and pigs. We cannot forget pigs.

It is something I keep wondering about, when I consider things like worldbuilding for Solarpunk stories. Right now pretty much the only ones interested in trying to communicate with animals are conservationists and NASA (who have figured that maybe we should figure out how to understand other species, because it might help us communicate with aliens one day). And while we have the vague idea of animal rights, it is mostly stuff about not making them suffer...

See, I am not a vegan. I am not gonna be a vegan anytime soon. Because, again, I very much see humans as part of nature - and we always were a predator species in the end. But I also think that stuff like factory farming, and I do not think that stuff like industrial fishing is right or moral. Some hunting and keeping small amounts of animals though? Absolutely valid. (Also, because some disabled and chronically ill people - as well as people in some extreme environments - are reliant on animal protein.)

BUT... I also do think it is wrong to think as ourselves as something so very different than animals.

People will always go on about not humanizing animals, to which I agree. They are different species and will probably think very differently than us. I have said it so many times and will say it again: No, your cat does not understand the concept of freedom. But that does not mean that there is no animal species capable of complex thought.

I have seen a lot of indigenous folks on twitter joke: "Orcas said: Sea back!" (paralleling the "land back" movement), and honestly: I don't think, they are necessarily wrong about it.

I think that a few species of animals do understand complex ideas like that... And maybe we should learn to listen to them and cooperate with them, rather than seeing ourselves as the one big species.

I don't know. It is just a thought I cannot shake.

odysseus: *turns to telemachus smiling like nothing happened* shall we go then?

telemachus: *happy but very confused*

getting emotional over footage of an amateur scuba diver interacting with a coelacanth. they are hunted by large deepwater predators, and here comes a large creature bearing the brightest lights it's ever seen, making strange noises, but it does not shy away. it hovers, calmly, as the diver reaches out and trails a hand down its back. im strongly against the anthropomorphizing of real life animals but the stupid emotional part of me loudly insists this is because it recognizes us, the alternating movements of its four paired limbs matching the diver's four paired limbs, & it is thinking, "hello, cousins, we missed you these 66 million years, it's so good to see you again. welcome back, welcome home."

According to NBC here in the US, the missing titanic sub has been found. As debris. Off the bow of the Titanic wreckage.

And it looks like the sub suffered what we all suspected, and what was undoubtedly the more merciful of the two options: a catastrophic implosion from the pressure.

Also, more info has come to light about the fishing trawler with the hundreds of migrants that sank cataclysmically off the coast of Greece, indicating that the greek coast guard knew about the vessel AND how much trouble the vessel was in, and were towing it at a speed that made it capsize, at which point they unhooked the tow line and watched the trawler sink without helping the passengers to safety. Despite a bunch of other ships trying to help as well throughout the whole ordeal.

So a lot of people are dead, all because of regulations (and the lack thereof) regarding sea-faring vessels and rescue protocols. People shouldnt be allowed to make a business charging a ton of money for a ride on an uncertified, unsafe, un-seaworthy ship going deep into the ocean with no distress beacon or tether to the mothership. People also shouldnt be allowed to enact laws that criminalize the ferrying of refugees, which then force the refugees to hitch rides on fishing trawlers, and which also prevent people from helping those fishing trawlers full of refugees due to fear of legal consequences.

Hopefully BOTH of these events spark changes on an international scale in terms of what is legally allowed to be sailed, who is legally allowed to be the passengers, and what the rescue protocols are in the event of disaster for any seafaring vessel, illegal or not. It shouldnt be just the global 1% who get 24/7 search parties and remote-operated submersibles helping rescue them.

It really dawned on me watching episode 17, just how important this sequence of events is to Kabru and Laios' relationship, and how. Well. That's for a different post. I want to keep this one free of spoilers. (Certified Safe For Anime Only™)(There are spoilers for episode 17, tho. Obviously.)

Kabru's main concern has been, at least in part, revealed. He wants to figure out if Laios is capable of defeating the dungeon, and, if so, if Laios can be trusted with the power that might confer. The answer to his first question is simple. Yes. If anyone can defeat the dungeon, it's Laios.

The second question is where things get interesting. Can Laios be trusted with power?

In the aftermath of Laios' first fight with Toshiro, Kabru learns that while Laios has no particular respect for the law or conventional wisdom, he does have the humility to consider that his judgment might be flawed if he encounters conflict with someone he respects.

That is the face of a man taking notes, and I think he's making a cautious mark in Laios' favor. Laios doesn't really understand Toshiro's opinion, but he's listening.

Then, in the fight with the Falin-Dragon chimera, Kabru voices dissent—disgust, even—with Laios and Marcille's priorities.

You can practically see the Dragon Age style approval rating drop. Kabru disapproves. Minus fifteen hearts. If it had ended like this, I think Kabru would have lost all interest in Laios. Someone who would sacrifice a dozen lives out of sentiment can't be trusted.

Laios' response, and the way it builds on Kabru's earlier observation, is crucial.

He listened. And even better, he didn't listen blindly. He applied critical thought to Kabru's argument. What Kabru hears from him isn't just "I'm sorry, you were right," but also, "I understand and respect your position and priorities, and here's a very good argument for why killing what I still consider to be my sister is not in our best interest."

He processed Kabru's criticism and came to his own conclusions, and he did it fast. Not only that, but he's right. Kabru hadn't considered the potential consequences of killing the chimera.

Laios proved in this one exchange that he 1) isn't blinded by either his pride or his prejudice, 2) has the strength of character to not just fall back and surrender to someone else's judgment when he's uncertain, and 3) is smart enough to tactically outhink Kabru.

This is why Kabru is so invested in Laios liking him that he forces himself to eat the harpy omlette. This is why Kabru takes Laios' hand and makes sure he knows he wants to see him again. He doesn't understand Laios, and he still has strong reservations about him. Laios' interest in monsters scares him. But Laios has proved to Kabru that he might be capable of being the person Kabru needs him to be.
