spent a full hour trying to troubleshoot why my oras rom hack was slightly broken and after reinstalling like 5 things and thinking i bricked my 3ds because of a stupid reddit comment i got it working

Transferred my 3ds data from a 2 gb sd card to a 32 one and Jesus Christ I can only do it on my mom’s age old MacBook Air that has a card reader built into it because for some reason using an adapter with literally any other computer didn’t even pick up that my teeny little two gig sd card was in there

Yesterday I bought a dashcam because honestly we all should have one if we drive, as part of it I had to buy an SD card, when I got home and tested it, it would not record and show an SD card error, I thought “ah damn I will need to go back and change it”

Trying to make sure it is an SD card issue and not a camera issue I took some of my old SD cards to test and yeah with an old one the camera works (can’t use it because is less memory)

So having confirmed it is the SD card issue I was about to just package everything to go later and change it when I thought “Oh let me try the SD card on my old digital camera”

Why? Idk I just thought about it. As expected when I put it in shows a SD card issue… and then it shows a message “Want to format SD card? It will delete all existing data from camera, want to continue?”

It is currently running, and I am not sure if this will work, but just the fact that this camera from the early 2000s even has the option do this in an attempt to solve the problem, when the newest 4k camera I bought won’t even attempt to fix the issue, is enough to show how while technology “improves” it also downgrades on ways we usually don’t notice.

I'm hacking on an embedded system for work and it uses SDIO, which is a special type of SD card interface designed for communicating with non-storage devices. In this case, Wifi, because apparently the WIFI chip on this board is hooked up through the same interface as the SD card (probably to save on pins)

And it turns out SDIO is based on a metadata format defined way back in the old days of PCMCIA/CompactFlash (a very early standard for add-on cards for laptops and other portable devices) and thus it uses Card Information Structures and I'm having to deal with them.

In other words, the trans hacker is having to deal with CIS errors.

fake high capacity usb sticks and sd cards are fr such an insidious scam. I've had some very tech savvy friends fall for it, even calling it "falling for it" doesn't feel right. like they're really cheap, much cheaper than reputable brands, but it's in the range where most people will go "guess that's how it is these days well isn't that cool" then you get it and plug it in, and it looks like it genuinely does have the space it advertised! you copy over files and get no errors, until eventually you go over the genuine hardware capacity and still, no errors usually. then, try to read back the data that's been overwritten and boom! it's all corrupted. but it's been too long since you bought it to get a refund or even leave a bad review! it's the perfect tech scam, a product that works just well enough for people to think it's legit, leave positive reviews even, think nothing is wrong, until somewhere down the line it starts corrupting all of their data. evilness

i know this looks like nothing to those who don't know but for me this is the culmination of my slaving away for 3 days lmao the homebrew i'm running, gbarunner3, is a virtual machine that uses the GBA hardware in DS Mode to run GBA games with a higher layer of customization and access to traditional DS hardware. an example of something similar that comes to mind is Nintendont, the gamecube loader for Wii. Technically speaking, the vWii on the Wii U is also this concept, albeit underutilized.

anyway, it's intended to run ROMs off the SD card exclusively. Meaning that it cannot run actual cartridges. I wanted to use my pokemon carts alongside gbarunner3's wireless emulation to facilitate wireless adapter features without having the more expensive GBA hardware and peripherals, for an example.

i spent the last few days learning a bit of how the DS hardware and the codebase works, and trying to implement the option of using actual hardware than only ROMs off the SD card.

the DS only has 4mb of memory! and most GBA ROMs are between 8mb-32mb. how gbarunner3 gets the ROM loaded, is that it has 1mb worth of cached ROM loaded at a time and dynamically loads a ROM region based on when the game's code needs to access it. learning how to deal with memory in the context of the SLOT2 data bus in a codebase designed around SD card caching...

It was very annoying! I had no way to debug anything other than forcing a crash to tell when I got a certain result. it effectively was trial and error for hours and hours of blind crash debugging. the dev of gbarunner3 uses an IS-Nitro development kit to do his debugging. I didn't have that lmao

this is me oversimplifying everything incredibly because it's very hard to describe but i'm very proud of it. i'm sure it looks like nothing from an outsider's perspective though but i think it opens the gateway for some cool features that you'd otherwise have to use digital-only ROMs for.

I have a lot more to do but the fact i got this far on a whim is really neat!

So I'm an old fart that still uses an mp3 player that transfers files via USB or SD card, and since changing to Linux, updating that thing has been PAINFUL due to the loss of MediaMonkey. Absolutely none of the modern Linux music players do proper playlist-based file syncing. (That is, you select the playlists to update, and sync both the files and the playlist m3u to the target device, even if the target device uses a different file folder structure from your computer.) Rhythmbox pretends to, but in practice you can only do it once and all subsequent tries error out. Having to wipe the entire gigabytes of data every single time I want to update the player? Um, no. The closest I got was using Strawberry to transfer files, but it doesn't sync the playlist itself, which is a huge hassle. And I know, another major old-fart moment, as the younguns these days just use cloud servers and dynamic playlists and service-based playlists and shit. Which is therefore what all of the non-dead Linux music players focus on. But I think I have finally got a working solution, by running 32-bit Foobar2000 through Wine with the OneWaySync component. (Although, I will still have to use a bash script to do auto-edits of the device playlist filepath, since Foobar is exporting Wine-assigned filepaths. Thankfully I already have one basically good to go from my Strawberry setup.)

The dream starts off with advertisements on Tv dedicated to a new burger place in town, “Blox_Burgers” is a new burger place. Their gimmick is that the restaurant is robotics and building block themed, with the burgers and food looking blocky.

Not all is as it seems, Some people walk out suffering immense nausea, They all believed it was food poisoning. But then those people suddenly mutate, These people gain a bloodlust for the metalic taste in blood due to the fact that they actually can’t consume metal.

It turns out there’s these little tan robot fleas with googly eyes that are about the size of a dime that can shapeshift into different objects, These things tend to latch on to people turning into naturally occurring things like pimples or moles on human skin in order to blend in and inject the protein that encourages this craving for the metallic taste of blood. In the restaurant they posed as sesame seeds waiting for ppl to lower their guard. Originally it was designed to make people develop an abnormal admiration of metal but it evolved into craving metal and now eating blood all together. The worst part is the flea things can actually asexually reproduce like real fleas, they can make these small jelly like cubes (they sorta look like cube shaped boogers) that should be crushed or melted on sight because if given 30 minutes they can form into another flea.

So the world is in shambles, blood thirsty victims roam the streets, corpses line the sidewalks. It's down to Sam, Max, FoxTail, Boxman, Professor Venomous, Ko and a few other ppl. Together they work to eliminate fleas and save who they can from this fatal error that Blox Inc. caused.

Time skip, The team is in a meeting hosted by Ko and someone else discussing the team name and logo due to a sudden efflux of fleas, and no visible afflicted outside. Everybody except one shows up to this meeting…

Boxman has made a deal with The new ceo of Blox inc himself JOHN DOE, he hijacked Roblox after beating Builderman (the character not the guy) and made another side company to create these fleas designed to take over the world, he was gonna eventually make everyone kill each other for metal in the end anyways. He made a promise to Boxman that he and Venomous will be safe as long as he promised to sabotage the surviving team once they got too close to figuring out the solution. Boxman was given two robots reminiscent of a mouse and a purple snake designed to not attack select people based on voice, he was instructed to put sd cards one containing his voice and and the other Venomous’ voice into the robot. The moment the robots turn on, he begins to speak and they do the EXACT OPPOSITE of what he was told they would do… he turns to the camera and gives the camera a very dissapointed look that says “Cob dammit, I should have known.”, as the mouse-bot lunges at him. The snake-bot slithers away looking for Venomous.

The last of what I remember happening in the dream is a scene where Venomous is talking to himself in his office, trying to evade the snake but it lunges at him, coils around his arm and bites, holding itself into place and infecting venomous.

Side Notes:

- I think it would've made more sense if the robot that attacked Boxman was more of an avian creature, like a chicken or sum - It was implied Foxtail acted as a primary leader and sometimes Sam was co leader and Max believing it wasn’t fair he couldn’t co lead along Sam. - Venomous and Boxman were a part of the team because of their experience with evil robots. - All of the box bots whereabouts are unknown - Boxman Only trusted john doe because he was extremely worried about Venomous and thought he could genuinely protect him by doing this

- I think I vaguely remember SpongeBob in the dream but I'm not gonna tag this post spongebob cus I barely mentioned him in this post

- Foxtail was highly suspicious of boxman for quite a while due to the word “Blox” being very similar to “Box”

Overall rating: 8/10 Would dream again, I’d love a sequel.

aw piss i copied all of the files from my old 4gb sd to my new 64gb sd for my 3ds and the console wont recognize the SD card so i REALLY hope its just a format error that can be fixed quick and i can recopy everything back in, or else i am going to be Upsetty

I have some broken SD cards. One doesn't let you delete files, add files, moving files makes them disappear into nowhere. Second one has one folder that gives errors when you do anything with it (rename/delete/add file), it used to have files, but now appears empty. So, the question: can I copy files from them somewhere safe? Will it be safe for new storage? I'm pretty sure it wasn't caused by malware, and don't care much if those files will get corrupted in the process, but worry if they will break something else.
