you posted about all the emo and alternative music you were into and not to mention the youtubers who you loved.
your number one favorite youtuber was alexis quackity. you related to him in many different ways. he made you laugh on days you weren’t doing too well. he meant a lot to you, even if you didn’t know him personally and it was all most likely just an internet personality.
still, you found yourself talking about his latest let’s talk streams or even his random tweets. you loved having a community of online mutuals that felt the same way about quackity.

halfway across the country, alexis sat cross-legged on the floor of his cluttered apartment, surrounded by a sea of empty takeout boxes and energy drink cans. his eyes were glued to the computer screen, the glow from the monitor reflecting off his square-rimmed glasses. his mouse hand hovered over the keyboard, poised to respond to the endless stream of comments that flooded his youtube channel. his thumbs danced across his phone, scrolling through the notifications that seemed to never end.
it had been a wild ride for alexis since he started streaming games and posting videos under the moniker 'Quackity'. the fame had come quickly, and with it, the adoration of millions of fans around the globe.
sometimes alex would take the time and look through his community of devoted fans. he would use throwaway accounts to simply be unknown for once and just see what there was out there.
his fans were so unbelievably talented. many of them were amazing artists making portraits of him or even writing songs for him. some were even exceptional writers and the fanfiction stories he’d come across were actually pretty good.
amidst the digital chaos, one fan seemed to stand out from the rest. y/n, with her username 'Y/NIsNotHere', had caught his attention with her thoughtful comments and unyielding support. He clicked on her tumblr profile, and there it was: a fan account dedicated solely to him.
her profile was a shrine to his digital persona, filled with meticulously edited gifs, screenshots from his streams, and heartfelt notes about how his content had changed her life. Alexis felt a strange mix of flattery and curiosity. he hovered over the 'send message' button, his heart racing with excitement.
what did she look like? what was her voice like? would she be as amazing as she seemed? with a deep breath, he typed out a simple hello.
granted, he was using a secret throwaway tumblr account so he didn’t expect for an immediate response. and yet, the response still came rather quickly.

loook i get why the idea of riding the "anti/pro" fandom disk horse makes people gag a little in their mouth and try to opt out entirely, but here's why i went from feeling exactly the same way to taking a firm profiction stance. I've been meaning to make this post for a while.
~10 years ago, I posted a fic for the first time and it got its own harassment campaign. The fic wasn't even sexual, and wasn't going to be (it remains incomplete). It was accurately rated T on fanfiction.net. Anyone in the Fairy Tail fandom will understand this: I literally got harassed for writing a "Lucy leaves the guild" fic💀.
After many nice comments, someone left a pretty nasty one. Hurt, I messaged them back. They acted super attacked that I'd responded (lmao) and after we argued, threatened to "rip my shitty story apart in the comments section" if I responded again. I told them "go ahead lol."
They went ahead.
Now know that it was a relatively small harassment campaign, but at the time, it was devastating. Right around then, I wound up in the hospital. After I got out, I went to excitedly check my fic, and found several reviews saying things I wouldn't repeat to my worst enemy. I was suicide-baited more than once, told "thank fuck you finally abandoned this shitty story, dumb cunt," stuff like that.
There were several accounts involved, and I can't say for sure, but I suspect at least a couple different people were involved, though probably at least half of it was one person.
All the other comments were screeching about how I hadn't updated, mostly. "NO UPDAAATEE WHY DOES THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS TO MEEEE??!!!" was one that stood out after I'd been miserable in a hospital for an extended period of time.
Idk what people think is going on when FT fic authors write this trope, and frankly I don't give a fuck. Because while I was partly writing the story out of some young, cringe feminist rage, I also did genuinely have a real story I was compelled to tell. I was inspired by another, popular fic I loved which used the trope to talk about how trying to shoulder our burdens alone really just hurts both ourselves and everyone who cares about us.
My own story was ultimately going to have similar themes, with more focus on strength, what it means, and in what contexts earning and having it actually matters. In retrospect, no wonder I wound up in hot water, because at the time "Lucy vs. Strength vs. Misogyny" was the FT fandom's Designated Nonsensically Activist Debate™. But that's partly why i wanted to write about it; engaging with the fandom had gotten me thinking about it 🤷‍♂️
Not too long after that, FFNet oh-so-benevolently granted us the ability to delete comments from our own stories (they never took my reports seriously at all, afaik). I deleted all or most of the harassers' comments (may still be a one or two up, and i'm fairly sure there's a couple comments defending my fic from the harassment) without saving screenshots, which I really regret now. I was just so mortified and full of self-loathing about the whole thing that i wanted to forget it completely. Something that had brought me joy at a very lonely, vulnerable period of my life had turned so negative, and i couldn't even tell the people closest to me about it without being made fun of for writing anime fan fiction.
I didn't understand why this happened at the time, but--after a period of trying to forget/bid out of it all with a slight anti lean (a common approach I see people use, and one which I'm not proud of adopting)--I just had to figure out What the Fuck Even Happened There. And I'm telling you, after years of reflecting, wrestling with both sides, and educating myself, that this "status quo of harassment" culture which pervades fandom goes way deeper than you think and comes out of a way darker well than you probably realize. An astonishing amount of this is, quite literally, TERF shit and evangelical shit.
Trying to be in fandom and take a stance of, "Anti/Pro shit? Ew, I'm Not Touching that," is like swimming in a heavily polluted river and being like, "Poison? Cringe. Not me lol."
You might be lucky enough to be in a less-polluted part of the river (AKA a relatively non-toxic fandom, in which case good for you!)...but tbh this rhetoric and peer-signalling will still seep in.
I can't stress enough that pro-fiction, AKA "proship", is the normal, leftist-about-art-and-sex opinion. Pro-ship is against all the horrible things you're against; in fact, pro-ship isn't trivializing real trauma by equating it with fictional trauma, or trying to apply literal evangelical/radfem solutions--which are proven not to prevent or help. Profiction/proship is literally just saying, "Fiction is fiction, reality is reality, and the two don't have a 1:1 relationship. And historically, trying to censor just things we've decided are bad has done nothing but get LGBTQ+ and POCs censored. Therefore, depictions of illegal things shouldn't be censored." That's it. "Proshippers all ship problematic ships," is a brazen lie. Many of them share other fans' disgust for those ships, they just don't believe in censoring fic authors over it.
It is also taking a stand against harassment because--and I hope my own story has helped drive this home--as with all groups who adopt ingroup/outgroup thinking, antis are defined by their tactics, not actual stances on real, serious issues. What happened to me was absolutely a result of anti, "it's okay to 'bully out' anything I just don't like" mindset pervading fandom. In a way, this was the mindset's final form. They didn't even feel the need to cite a reason the trope was "bad" or "wrong"; it annoyed them, and they viewed their own feelings as a valid enough pathway for policing to go right ahead and do so.
In the interest of offering solutions instead of just bitching about problems, I might make a "how to know if you've bought into these types of views"-type post sometime. Also might come back to this and provide some sources/citation.

so one of the technical bits i challenged myself with this gunter/corrin doujin was to:
(a) figure out an efficient process for professional multi-page artistic works in linux/true OSS programs - from ideation all the way to printer hand-off.
and
(b) a process that fit well with my brain and kept me from spinning my wheels endlessly redoing pages. it's a common problem with longer projects (aka why you see reboots of webcomics all the time, and also why i haven't been able to get "what greater sin" out for three years cuz i sucked at this lol).
why the focus on process though?
after mastering a certian degree of technical proficiency. it's what separates the hobbyist artists from the pros. not to toot my horn, but i'm quite good at project management process at work, and about two years ago it dawned on me to take some of that learned knowledge and actually apply it here if only to save eyestrain/wrist-strain time.
work lazier smarter, not harder etc.
before i get into the process outline, there's two programs that are doing the heavy lifting since i gave them a trial run with the last anthology and they worked great in tandem. (both cost no money and are available on all major OS's btw)
krita, my main drawing program. sketching/inking/speech bubbles/coloring/vector stuff can all be done here.
libreoffice writer - basically microsoft word for linux. i use it for arranging multiple pages, reordering, and exporting as .pdf to give to the printer (while amazing at rendering, krita can't export as pdf or show multi-pages)
so!
process wise, it occurred to me not too long ago that i needed to consolidate my multi-page creative projects into 3 major gates.

thumbnails are a common concept in comics, but they're great for print front/back matter too. thumbnails ain't here to look pretty, their sole purpose to get the idea from your noggin to on the page.

here's a completely unaltered spread from my journal with a ton of thumbs and notes for this doujin.
so what's the kind of stuff i think about with thumbs?
how panels in a comic fit together with the major emotional beats + line of action. does the eye follow the pages naturally? do you "feel" the emotional impact?
does the compositions work with each other? negative/positive space, weight on top or bottom or diagonally, etc. do the pages feel claustrophobic or too empty? do they breathe?
decorative framing elements that reflect the tone you want + how they generally lead the eye across the page
random notes about overall tone or potential future pages
etcetc
at this point i import that digitally, and start drawing a proper sketch off of it.
fast forward from that sketch to:
"proof of concept" layout
i'm calling this proof of concept instead of a draft as they serve different purposes. a draft is a half-finished work you can just screenshot and show to anyone for feedback (like comms). proof of concept here is showing a certian level of completeness across draft pages to measure consistency.
lack of consistency is the mind killer killer of comics.
proof of concept is specifically meant to nip the 'fizzled out halfway' issues in the bud. it's to show you how cool it looks altogether already, but also shed a light on problem areas that are potentially popping up on the earlier side, so there's less time wasted.
this is a little premature in the process for a proof of concept screenshot, but you get the idea here in a later strip, shown here as screenshots imported into libreoffice writer:

another reason that made libreoffice writer essential is the accurate 2-page spread view. between that, being able to resize the page to whatever you need, and the very easy pdf exporter (with customizable compression), i don't know if i could do this kind of project here.
now, backing up - what kinds of consistency are we checking for here?
does the inking/coloring style change noticeably in a jarring way?
is there one comic strip that the pacing/paneling sucks in comparison to the others? or feels awkwardly added in tone and perhaps better saved for a different project?
is there one panel within a sequential series that's torturing you? what's the best way to throw it out and redo it even faster?
do the front/back matter support the meat of the inside in a clever, on-tone way?
did you accidentally change the font halfway through after you liked your new shiny toy? which one works better?
etc
keep in mind we're not just checking the consistency in one strip, it's for the book as a whole.
and then lastly,
"the last ten" final
"the last ten" is a mental concept i've used for the last ten years for single comic pages. it's especially tempting to noodle over endlessly making one comic page perfect, when you could have done ten reasonably good ones in the same time, and so i made this my last step making IC pages.
once when you approach a level of reasonably done, but kinda hate the page and are procrastinating on getting it out, stop, rest your eyes overnight, and list the last ten minor things you'd change.
once when you've changed those? out the door it goes.
i'm gonna switch to a different project but here's a good example of a "last ten" stage applied to illustrations when i did fallen!gunter's FEH mockups.

i can't remember the exact last ten i used, but it was something like:
too much of one specific glowy purple on both, i wanted more contrast with the red glow + "water" texture
needed more effects on the first image to better match FEH's aesthetic
change Leigh's credits after they got a chance to see it and give the thumbs up
knee/shin on left looks unfinished painting wise, clean up
missing chest plate silver decorations on left, clean up
etc
this is the last hail mary check to hack your brain into being satisfied with the page. you've had your say, onwards to the next one.
now, you can also have an additional 'last ten' for the project as a whole. but it's especially critical for comic pages to help keep the momentum/tempo/pace going.
anyway!
we'll see how all of this actually works in practice depending on how fast i can get this doujin out. :)

I have a lot! Lol. There are some pretty vile genuinely -ist ones, but I mostly want to treat this game as things to laugh at rather than get mad over. So I'll pick two that are on the puzzling side!
I think the funniest bad take which I can also connect to my username I've seen was the person deadly seriously saying zanpakutou are the opposites of the wielder, and citing Zangetsu as proof (white Zangetsu, not old man). It's so puzzling! We got the reveal in a chapter literally called THE BLADE IS ME. I desperately need to know how they arrived to that conclusion.
Plus, like, your power growing the more in tune with yourself you are is one of the coolest core aspects of Bleach, imo. It's one of the themes the manga never betrays, too.
Putting the rest under the read more because it got long, lol.
The other is more recent and I have an actual screenshot of it! Yay!

I'm not saying this is a bad take because of the ships it targets -- I couldn't care less about who ships what, frankly -- but the reasoning! It made me feel like I time travelled to 2011 :DDD *who* the hell throws 'horny yaoi fangirl' as an insult these days?
If I am to be more serious, it's also the misconception that people ship things because of anything that reflects something about them as a person. Genuine emotional connection? Who cares? It's fine to want that for your ships. I would never rec grimmichi/urayoru/yorusoi to anyone looking for healthy ships where both halves genuinely touch each other's hearts, but people don't like unhealthy ships because they're 'starved for genuine emotional connection', be so serious right now. It's such a cheap attempt to feel superior and so dated that it becomes funny.
8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
Hmmm, what IS a common opinion? It feels like the fandom is pretty fractured. I guess the one unifying opinion I disagree with is that the manga became worse after Soul Society arc. I think its structure became significantly weaker and it kept sustaining tension for far longer than it should've with very minor moments of (much needed, necessary for characterisation) reprieve, but I think Hueco Mundo and Lost Agent and, yes, even TYBW, are muuuuuch stronger arcs thematically. They're more depressing and pretty much a downward spiral (and dear god TYBW is such a mess plot-wise that it can be hard to reread) but the themes it revolves around are ever-present and it never betrays itself for the sake of a #cool moment or "closure", and I personally appreciate that.

Is it cheating to say fluff? That's not Bleach-related. I'm sorry, I love misery!
Bleach-related................ I'm drawing a blank! There are plenty of tropes etc that I dislike, but I can usually understand why someone would like it. I suppose I don't understand takes that seem to be based on 'well EYE like it and it came to me in a dream' (rather than being based on something that happens in canon), but I can understand why someone would enjoy that too, it's just not my personal approach.
I will say though. I am a bit bored of the "this villain just needed Love and their bad personality and actions are mostly a result of Not Knowing Love" take. I think villains are hot because they're villains! Let them enjoy their villainous actions! But I still get why people like that too. So I guess I'm mostly giving a non-answer here.

My Generation Six Heir, Adeline Olvera, continued

Adeline and Rin's second child Charlotte was born while August was an infant! I consider this to be The Sim's equivalent of two under two. Also the Relationship and Pregnancy Overhaul mod by lumpinou (🐐 status wow!) makes this quite realistic. Basically Rin now can not stand being pregnant and is just not okay with it. Was it too many pregnancies too soon? She'd also love to have another child. But that's life, even in The Sims now!

Adeline has always loved family. She loves her parents, siblings, cousins, and has been around lots of kids. Parenting came naturally and she was as doting and supportive as her parents were with her. She was also stricter. Funny as when she was a toddler, she was so difficult and later in youth, her parents let her do what she wanted.

Based on my screenshots, I think she spent more time with Charlotte when she was an infant and toddler than August. Maybe it was because of her work.
At this point I see she is in the Adult lifestage. I think she'd also progressed far enough in her career that she had more free time (only in The Sims lol. Well, it depends)

Rin was the stay at home mom. Also, grandma Elizabeth helped a ton.

So Adeline's an accomplished Sim and her life is going great. Thriving career plus a lovely family. Just goals! I have to admit, she's also had a nice life

But she has had struggles. This period of her life was dominated by grief. I talked about sad periods when many Sims are dying. This is it. It started when she lost her father. With family support and mourning however, she was able to move on.

And love. I can't overstate just how supportive Rin was. And all her relatives. This huge family and support system. It made losing them even more painful. I looked at her life statistics and sadness has been one of her most common emotions. I'm glad she likely won't outlive Rin. It sucks to make Rin the widow instead, but after what Adeline's been through, I hope it's done

Then she lost her mother. I loved Elizabeth too. Just heartbreaking. She was such a beacon of warmth and good and is missed dearly. This was painful.
Shockingly her uncle Connor and his wife would both have their lives cut short in accidents around this time. Her beloved uncle Jason passed away due to old age. Since toddlerhood, they had the sweetest relationship. He was a great guy.

It was a winter made even more cruel.
Sims can water plants with tears.
I'm just thinking of all these Sims, over generations, and the role this garden has played in the family. A critical source of income, delicious produce, sanctity, a loved hobby, and I suppose now a place to grieve. I call it Rebecca's garden.
Rebecca Olvera was a spare way back in generation two and Valentina's sister. She was I think the Sims equivalent of a horticulturist, of course loved gardening, and was also a talented pianist. Unfortunately none of her music survived. This garden, now infinitely more valuable does.
I have to say this game and the stories told mean so much to so many people.
This got emotional. Now I'll joke about how realistic Sims gardening is. Everything is perennial (except for Cottage Living giant crops. With the way they're planted, it can be like small scale farming), pests are easy to deal with (😭), sunlight doesn't matter etc. Anyways this game is great lol

"Children are life renewing itself..."
Life does that. It's actually the whole point. Through new life. Flowers bloom only to set seeds in fruit or otherwise. Mosquitoes commit to destroying humanity every time they find standing water. People obviously have kids. And Sims do too. Life goes on and my Sims push on for even simple moments like these.

Also Sims has ghosts. In my game they always seem to show up when my Sims are done grieving. It almost makes it sweeter

Adeline's family has changed. It is much smaller. There's been pain and loss affecting everyone, but the most important thing is supporting one-another.
Suffice it to say, generation five is over. Only sims in generation six and onwards are alive right now. It always feels like a new era in time's like this. I feel like generation one and two was a time, generation three, generation four to six (and maybe can be split from Arthur's death), and now here's a new one at generation six and onward.

Okay so these posts are supposed to be about Adeline. It's just that family is a big part of her and everything. The periods of loss were brutal. I just remember everyone being sad all the time. And the children not having as happy as a time as every child deserves. But struggle doesn't have to define us. And life goes on

Adeline has recently reached the top of her career, shortly after the charity benefit gala. Her title is Charity Icon. She's also a little famous. She has the refined palate quirk, and the networking perk so far (Adeline is charismatic, has maxed the skill, has loads of friends, the people person lifestyle, and her career. I figured this made sense). I think in late adulthood, she's at the peak of her life. It's great. She's a phenomenal Sim with a great life and part of my legacy family.
Adeline, you're a Sim. You exist behind pixels as a bunch of code and objects. Like all beloved things, most of all, you exist in my heart.
I'm so grateful for this game, amidst all the difficulty of real life.
Honestly while writing this post I was thinking a lot. It almost became like a journal entry or reflection. I was thinking about that period of struggle. And my irl struggles. And the quote I dropped "Children are life renewing itself..."
As this is also a public post, I think I'm not gonna say where I got it from 🙂 It led to me thinking of real life people who inspire me. Two in particular, Sandra Day O'Connor and Hattie McDaniel.
I'm not even twenty yet. Life really is long. I first realized it when I thought of even after grad school (if I go), I will probably still be in my early twenties. Life is a journey. Thing's change. I have and will change. Career's change all the time. And the future is uncertain. I think of what O'Connor and McDaniel achieved despite their struggles. I'm so early in everything. It doesn't define me. So I'll hold on. Even in the darkest times.
2024 has been the worst year of my life. Someone said "Good... that means it'll only get better... if not, congratulations. This has not been the worst year of your life" 💀😂 something along those lines
Happy holidays and Happy New Year. I went from Sims to this. So thank you Maxis (and even EA lol) for this. And of course, The Sims community for all everyone contributes.

HPA students are 17 when they are first years and 20 when they graduate. The sdr2 students are told they have already graduated/they are already at least 20 years old as their first motive at the very beginning of chapter 1. I really don’t get how them being teens is such a common misconception in the fandom
Can I get a gameplay screenshot for the 17 year old part? You can stay anonymous and give me a timestamp to a YouTube video or something. I don't know how I've played this game for multiple times yet still missed this fact lol.
If I just got into highschool and some random stuffed animals tell me I've actually graduated and am actually 20, I'd still believe I'm 15 (or 17), since I've only experienced 15/17 years of my life, and we can see from ch 6 that their avatar bodies still reflect their first-year high schooler self (example being Saiyonji).
Also, like, it's fine if you believe they're 17 y/o 🤦. I honestly don't care if they're 15 or 17 or 20. If it is important to you that they are 17, just pretend I put 17 in the place of 15; or don't read what I've wrote. I'm ok with that. 15 is just a shorthand for me to say komaeda is still a little guy who hasn't got rid of his teenage emotions and matured into a proper adult human being. He's troubled by lack of normal socialization, he's still mentally immature regardless of his physical age, and I want to empathize with him and give him some touches of humanities in this way. It's a rhetorical shorthand.

random mannsgiving question: have you ever written about the art in heat? i've tried googling "why do vincent and justine have a GIANT NAKED MAN in their bedroom", but no dice, lmao. am also v fond of "Painting of a Man with His Face Half Hidden" that justine always purposefully stands in front of, and whatever that not-at-all-symbolic twins/lovers painting is that neil passes at van zant's.
Excuse my incredibly shitty “screenshots.” The HUGE NAKED MAN painting is insane, it’s one of so many details in Mann’s strategic placement of art within the Gustafson home, a structure I am especially fascinated by because it exists specifically to menace Vincent Hanna and to reflect his deepest fears and insecurities back at him.

Is he dying? Is he having an orgasm? It’s difficult to tell, and symbolically, the difference doesn’t actually amount to much, lol. But it is a male figure who looms behind the marital bed, visually duplicating the shadow of the Absent Biological Father, whose existence was just introduced to us with Lauren.

There is of course the painting of the figure next to Justine, whose gaze is cast downward and whose mouth is obscured — he will not look (what should he be looking at?), and he will not speak (to whom, about what?).

My favorite: the kitchen wall! We are being shown that this is Lauren’s art, what is probably a self-portrait, and some pretty bleak foreshadowing: her eyes are red (with rage? From tears?) and her lips are blue, suggesting a cadaver. The rest is hard to see clearly, but there’s pretty obviously a suit, masculine totem of the Profession, hanging there facing the wall, with no one inside it. It's empty. [KILL BILL SIRENS]

WHY ARE THERE DOLL BABIES HANGING FROM THE CEILING? WHAT???

A common motif in Vincent’s associated visuals is black encased in white, or white encased in black: it’s in the house, it’s on his ring, it’s even on his gun (ivory, to mark him as a hunter). He first sees Neil’s face in black and white. He speaks of a dream in which dead bodies accost him with their black eyeballs. There’s too much to pick apart here all at once, but that symbolism of duality and containment, darkness and light that engulfs the other rather than integrating, or that strains to break out, is heavily loaded.
What’s also black and white? A photocopy, usually — at least in 1995! — or a facsimile.

Van Zant also gets some fun black and white decor, and in this case the “bad copy” is a of a colorless jungle, zebra stripes and another naked man (lol) and monochrome plant fronds. The suggestion is of a sterile, inauthentic masculinity-by-proxy, Van Zant thinking he can win a war in the streets against Neil by ordering his cronies to fight it for him, engaging in the kind brute violence he could never endure or enact himself. It is contrasted in the same scene with Neil’s authentic immersion in the gritty, razor-wired jungle of L.A.:

Neil is positioned very frequently next to patches of greenery and nature within the urban matrix, symbolizing this pastoral escapist fantasy for which he yearns, that he has been trying patiently to defer but is tempted by Eady to pursue too fast, too soon. Eady as in Eve, greenery as in a certain garden…
In Van Zant’s house, we see that painting of the Doubles, and there is the suggestion of the Lover but also of the Twin, the Bad Copy. Van Zant is doing under cover of legality and propriety, or the trappings of them, that which Neil and his crew served hard time for by putting their bodies on the line. Breeden’s quote comes to mind: I did hard time for what that motherfucker does every day. When Neil executes Van Zant, he is also raging against that inauthenticity, that fundamental capitalist hypocrisy.
I could go on: the architectural stylings of Chris and Charlene’s house foreshadowing his whole character arc in Heat 2 (no way!), the painting in Eady’s house that is clearly a hand reaching out (ooohhh noooo), that in Mann’s rendition of the iconic Alex Colville painting he makes sure to show us the gun paired with the set of house keys (WOAGH), it just goes on and on. He’s a genius.

Ryan Ross did not write AFYCSO in high school. He had graduated before P!ATD even existed.
it seems like there’s a lot of current misinformation about early P!ATD, so I’m going to run through some of the main points related to Ryan in case that can help...
2004
January – February: 17-year-old Ryan was in his last semester of high school and hadn’t met Brendon yet. The Summer League was busy trying to record some demos – those are the songs that Ryan wrote in high school. He was thinking of calling that demo “Movers and Shakers: Here’s Defeat You Can Dance To.” (I don’t remember ever hearing The Summer League’s songs, but I was getting into the P!ATD fandom in fall 2005 when the Vegas kids who knew Ryan in hs hadn’t been scared away yet. They all said similar things: The Summer League had been trying to sound a bit like Fall Out Boy, Ryan’s singing needed a lot of work, and those songs had nothing in common with the future P!ATD ones). The songs that Ryan would write usually reflected whatever phase he was going through. From what I heard & saw online, he seemed to be a Fall Out Boy fan in 2004 who had previously worked at Hot Topic, had gauges, wore graphic tees, and dyed his hair dark. Apparently The Summer League’s songs matched that phase. I really want to emphasize this: Ryan Ross was a huge Fall Out Boy fan in 2003-2004. The Summer League had even played Chicago Is So Two Years Ago in December 2003 at the Punks Who Saved Christmas show at the Huntridge Theater in Vegas (here’s one news article that’s still up that mentions The Summer League sharing the bill with a few other bands. Ryan mentioned the song name in the comments on his post here). There wasn’t much useful info in The Summer League’s journal entries... it was mostly Ryan’s typical angst that was a not-so-subtle message to a girl lol. But he did post on January 1st “new songs. new friends. new recordings. new year.” He also called his band “League” for short when he was talking about their new tshirts.
side note: I recently saw a screenshot of a current info site that said Ryan started writing AFYCSO when he was 14 lol. Here’s how Ryan described the actual songs he wrote around that age: “They were some pretty terrible songs! I guess we were sort of growing up listening to pop punk and the whole skateboarding scene. So it was sort of very juvenile, very innocent pop punk.” Maybe the current misinformation came from someone who saw a quote from Ryan talking about starting to write his own songs when he was in his early teens, but they somehow didn’t realize that Pet Salamander or The Summer League existed?? (Pet Salamander was the early garage band that played a lot of blink-182 songs as Ryan & Spencer learned their instruments, but Spencer was clear that they hadn’t been a blink-182 cover band like the media later tried to make it seem. For example, he said in fall 2005 that “It wasn’t like a Blink cover band.. it’s just that the first songs [Ryan] and I learned on guitar and drums were Blink songs. We’ve always had our own songs. It’s just that we would play them too.” But I still think it’s sometimes funny to call them a blink-182 cover band just because of how much the media ran with that idea in 2006). 
I didn’t see/save a lot of Ryan’s older personal lj entries, but apparently he posted this on April 27th: “when i met pete from fob in november i talked to him and Patrick a while about song writing and music, being in a band, and when they came back in febuary, i went up to pete and said hey pete remember me my names- and right then he goes yea dude ryan i remember you! hows the summer league? i don't know why i thought of this but that really left an impression on me that he would remember my name and face and band after meeting tons of kids in every city and learning a 1000 new names a night. i am horrible with names.” Again, I didn’t see that post for myself, but I thought it was most likely legit based on the people who shared it in 2006.
spring & early summer: Brendon met and joined The Summer League around the time he turned 17, Ryan lived with Spencer towards the end of the school year while his dad was in rehab, Ryan graduated from high school, and the band played some small shows while Ryan was the singer. Calling them “shows” is iffy, though. They said they played places like a party, Brendon’s church, and someone’s backyard this summer. I think the July 18/19-ish show was at Brendon’s church. Paulina talked about being the merch girl at a June 6th show, but idk anything about where that was. The guys said the biggest shows they’d played before they became P!ATD were at a waterpark, a hot dog place called Doggy Style, a bowling alley, and a battle of the bands, but idk how many of those happened before summer 2004. The point is that they were still playing pop-punk songs in public as The Summer League for part of this summer and they even had tshirts for sale that said “The Summer League: Adult Contemporary” (some Vegas kids shared pics of those in the very early Fever era). The guys definitely didn't get their practice space until summer 2004 after Ryan had graduated from high school. (Apparently Ryan also posted on lj on July 2nd: “we moved into our practice room today! lots of good sex could go down in there. that place is 24 hours. and i have the keys. hahahaha. but really it should be cool. i hope. well. maybe”). The band made it very clear in future interviews that being in that practice space & hearing all of the other bands that sounded alike was what inspired them to totally change directions and form the new band of P!ATD together (so Brendon could technically be considered an original member). They stopped playing any type of shows in public after forming the new band, so their claim that Panic! at the Disco had never played a single show before they were signed & recorded their first album was legit. (That phrasing was tricky but it was a brilliant marketing move – there’s more info in this post). I’m not clear on exactly which month they formed P!ATD, but sometime in late July – August would fit with their stories.
Here’s some misc summer stuff that doesn’t have much to do with the band: Ryan went to Warped Tour, saw a FOB show around July 28th, and got his dog Shotgun from the clinic where he worked (I think he maybe worked for Brent’s parents).
August: Ryan posted the first draft of what would become the lyrics for It’s Time to Dance on his livejournal. The band repeatedly explained over the next few years that that was the first song they wrote together as a band (they’re talking about more than just lyrics). They were all 17 at some point while working on that song this fall. 
The guys were not all the same age, though! I think that’s where some current confusion might come from. Ryan & Brendon were both 17 in summer 2004 when they got their practice space and formed P!ATD, but Brent & Spencer were only 16 (Spencer turned 17 in September, so he wasn’t 16 for very long either... but it’s still true that part of the band was 16 when they got their practice space and worked on their first song that would eventually be on their first album). Brendon, Spencer, & Brent were still in high school, but Ryan had been in the grade above them and had already graduated. Since the majority of the band members were still in high school throughout the next year while they worked on parts of AFYCSO, it was a quick interview answer (and a good selling point) to say that the guys were a bunch of teenagers in high school when they wrote AFYCSO. Even Jon Walker would later say things like “we were in high school when we wrote our first album,” despite the fact that he was a year older than Ryan and didn’t even meet the band until 2006. The guys just needed to have a group statement in interviews.
Ok so back to August 2004: Ryan turned 18 at the end of the month and started college at UNLV, so they were all dealing with “school” in general as they started getting serious about their new band. (side note: in 2006 Ryan said he’d been studying creative writing, but in 2008 he said he’d been studying music production & engineering. He was barely even there for a semester, so maybe he’s just talking about the various classes he took... I don’t think it’s that big of a deal).
fall / autumn: The band was trying to get fans online instead of irl in Vegas. Brendon was now the band’s singer, they recorded the first demo of It’s Time to Dance as separate parts on a laptop & posted the demo to purevolume in late October, and then Ryan proceeded to spam the internet telling people to check out his band’s song. (Slightly related: I know the main masterpost of Ryan’s personal lj posts that was generated through ljseek in 2006 only goes back to like fall 2004, but that’s def not the full picture. It’s only text and it’s missing a lot of content btw – even from the time period it includes. And this version of the old masterpost of Ryan’s lj comments is missing some stuff, but at least that one’s still up). Anyways, Ryan was just a regular guy trying really hard to promote his band & get anyone’s attention. A lot of his bathroom selfies are from those posts this fall. I’ll just add one here for an example... he’s a freshman in college:

Ryan still lived at home and later said he was having a hard time with his dad this fall, so that factored into some of the earliest P!ATD songs he wrote. The band started to record the “Nails for breakfast and tacks for snacks” demo in early November, that untitled demo was posted on purevolume in mid-November (this is related), and then Ryan posted the lyrics on his lj too (I put them in here). And here’s the related tightpants post too because why not.
The guys later talked about how stressful this season had been as they tried to create a legit band while going to school & their part-time jobs. Ryan said he’d work mornings, go to class in the afternoon, and then practice in the evenings. He was also having a harder time commuting to school, and posted on lj about a parking ticket, a speeding ticket, and getting his car towed while he was in class. The band sounded like they had a lot of pressure from their parents and might have been on the verge of breaking up at this point.
Pete Wentz actually listened to the purevolume link that Ryan pestered him with, posted this on November 28th (you can see Ryan’s reply in the comments), and then emailed Ryan saying he wanted to hear more (Pete said in countless interviews that he wanted to sign them right away). Ryan was still 18 & in college at this point and the other guys were still 17 & in high school.
Brent’s brother Blake was the one who later leaked the supposed transcript of the AIM chat between Ryan & Pete. Blake posted that as a myspace bulletin during the mid-2006 season when he was doing whatever he could to aggressively destroy the band’s image, so I’d definitely take the content there with a grain of salt (even if it seems harmless). I wouldn’t trust anything from Blake... and especially during that season. 
Pete Wentz rented a car and drove to Vegas on the weekend of December 3-4 (some people went with him too, like his tour manager Dan Suh). The P!ATD guys didn’t even know how to play their new songs live as a band yet, so they basically played It’s Time to Dance acoustically for Pete over & over in their practice space (here’s more info). They still only had 2 songs on purevolume at this point. Pete told the band he wanted to sign them as they were driving back to his hotel.
A summary of the rest of December: P!ATD got their myspace, the band went to visit Pete in LA (Brendon recorded his vocals for 7 Minutes In Heaven), Ryan dropped out of college, and the guys signed their contracts sometime around the new year (with the help of their parents since 3/4 of them were still underage). 
January –  June 2005
The band went back to LA in mid-January to visit Pete and record an official demo of “Its Time To dance (cause boys will be boys)” that could be used on samplers. That was posted on purevolume on January 20th (Ryan was the one who kept fans updated... because yeah, the band already had fans thanks to their Fall Out Boy connection). Here’s a comparison of the 2 demos for It’s Time to Dance: the first version is the one that Pete heard in November 2004, and the second one is the January 2005 demo he had them record. I’ve seen a lot of confusion over those demos lately for some reason, so to be clear: the second one is not the demo from fall 2004... it’s the demo that was widely used for promotional stuff in 2005. It was even played on the radio in some towns a bit later that year. That’s the song that I think best represents the 2005 season.
side note: many years after the split Brendon claimed that the band spent 1.5 years in their van… so he was counting the entire time he was in a band with these guys starting in late spring 2004 (regardless of what their band name was or whether they were even playing shows or driving anywhere). The trips to LA to visit Pete are part of that timeframe then. Brent claimed that they’d started recording AFYCSO in January 2005, so that was just the second demo of It’s Time to Dance. 
the FBR spring sampler with P!ATD on it started coming out around Valentine’s Day, but P!ATD wasn’t officially announced as a new FBR band until March 15th. This is the picture they were using this spring:

Their FBR & purevolume bio called them a dance rock band and mentioned the line “ambitious and desperate for attention” from one of the songs they were working on. Every band member’s contact info had been listed on purevolume in fall 2004 (their AIM names were “stitchesnwalkers” for Ryan, “screenametaken1″ for Brent, “aboynamedskip” for Brendon, and “twentyninepiecer” for Spencer), but by April 2005 they were only using Ryan’s AIM & band email as P!ATD’s official contact info (Ryan also continued to use his blinkexists182 email throughout the Fever era). The Relax Relapse demo was on purevolume by April too.
Pete Wentz obvs had a big fanbase, so the online hate towards P!ATD had already started (because they didn’t “deserve” to be signed and hadn’t “paid their dues” etc etc). Ryan said that “Rather than going to all these boards and writing what I thought, I just put it in the songs.”
During the Fever era the band talked about how much pressure they had been under in spring 2005 when everyone expected them to just come up with an album. However, by 2008 they had a much different perspective and Ryan was making comments about the first album like “we had ample time to write… we had no pressure and all we wanted to do was to put our music out there.” During 2007-2008 they talked about how they were pretty much unknown in 2005 and didn’t have an established sound or image, so there weren’t many expectations in comparison with where the band was at while writing the second album. So everything is relative, but the point is that in spring 2005 the guys still seemed to feel some pressure.
It sounded like a lot of the stress this spring came from their personal lives too. This quote from Ryan sums up a lot of what he said in countless Fever-era interviews (this is from the spring 2006 Alt Press cover article that had a lot of errors from the journalist btw, so I’m only referencing Ryan’s direct quotes): 
“When I told my dad after the first semester that I was going to quit college and write a record, he was not very pleased. He definitely threatened to take everything away. I was on the verge of getting kicked out because of that decision… I’d be completely angry with him about wanting to kick me out of the house, but then I’d have to make sure he was ok and take care of him. I’d… try to get him back to being sober, and [it would be] like he forgot all about what I just did for him and go right back to wanting to kick me out. There were definitely a lot of fights, and he was in and out of the hospital a lot that year. There’d be times where I’d be gone doing something for the band, I’d come home and he wasn’t there. There’d be a message on the machine from the hospital, saying that he was there and to come see him. There was a ton going on in my life, all while trying to write a record.”
I don’t think Brendon actually got an apartment this spring, so I wouldn’t jump to conclusions that Ryan stayed with him in a hypothetical apartment (even if that’s a nice story).
Ryan’s girlfriend cheated on him around late spring 2005, which led to a lot of inspiration and a shift in the focus/tone of several song drafts that Ryan wrote after that (notice how 2/3 of the band’s official demos so far had focused on Ryan’s struggles with his dad). The early lyrics for Build God were shared in May.
The band said they needed to wait until Brendon had graduated from high school before they could leave for Maryland to record AFYCSO (Brendon also explained the same thing on lj). They left on June 13th and drove across the country in their van. The sleepover pics were from around this time btw. 
Ryan briefly got back together with the girl who cheated on him.
THE LAST HALF OF 2005
Some writing had definitely happened that spring, but Ryan made it clear in Fever-era interviews that he also wrote part of the songs for AFYCSO that summer in the studio. The exact number of song drafts that the guys brought to Maryland changed depending on the interview, but they usually said they had 3-7 drafts ready for Matt Squire to look at (although Ryan said a couple times that he only had a few songs before working with Matt). AFYCSO as we know it definitely wouldn’t exist without Matt Squire as the producer... all 4 band members gave him a ton of credit too. Spencer said in fall 2005 that “As far as the recording goes, all credit goes to Matt Squire. He really helped piece this together.” Brendon said “I love that guy… He had so many good ideas that fit perfectly. I should say we had pieces of songs and put them together. We had seven or eight full songs, and then he edited every single one of them. He really helped us out with some ideas.” Brent said “Also, pre-production – I can’t even say how much he helped us structure those songs and turned them into real songs and gave us a direction. We went in there with 5 solid songs but then we had other songs that were just kind of pieces… that guy – he’s a genius. He really is.” Ryan wrote some amazing lyrics, but Matt Squire absolutely deserves credit for the end result too.
Ryan said in a summer 2006 interview that “we wrote Fever in three months and recorded it in a month.” That timeframe lined up with other interview quotes and everything the band shared online while the events were unfolding. They mainly wrote AFYCSO in spring & summer 2005. Ryan turned 19 several weeks after the band left the studio, so he was 18 for the writing process of the first album. 
The band explained several times that the verses for IWSNT were written a day before Brendon had to sing them since the guys had to be done in the studio a couple days later. Brendon also told Hearts & Sleeves in early 2006 that “A lot of the second half [of the album] was written in the studio and recorded in like the last five days. So that was really tough. We were stressing out pretty bad. We didnʼt have some songs written. We still didnʼt get to do some - a couple ideas that we had but that was just due to a lack of time.”
Ryan wrote the lyrics, but all four guys helped create the overall songs. Ryan talked to Helio at the end of the Fever era about the songwriting process for the first album: “when I had a little bit of the music and lyrics finished, I would bring it to Spencer and Brendon and we would all finish the songs together.” The band’s approach to songwriting varied for each song, though. Sometimes Brendon came up with music to fit the lyrics, sometimes it was a group effort, sometimes the lyrics were written first, sometimes the music was written first, etc. There’s more info in this post about recording AFYCSO. The sound of AFYCSO was a reflection of the different musical interests of all four band members (plus Matt Squire’s advice). 
Ryan called into DJ Rossstar’s Punk Rock Show on June 30th and fans could submit questions through AIM or online (speaking of which, there was definitely a decent sized fanbase following the band’s time in the studio).
Spencer introduced Ryan to the Beatles this summer in the studio (I think that Spencer might have specifically pointed out the strings/cello in Eleanor Rigby in early July too... but that’s just my own guess). Brendon’s livejournal entry on July 3rd had the title “I look at all the lonely people.” Ryan later named Eleanor Rigby as a song that changed his life. He also said “I started really getting into The Beatles when we were recording [AFYCSO]. Our drummer, Spencer, started playing me some of their stuff.” This is part of why it was so fun to see the band end the Fever era with their own cover of Eleanor Rigby. 
Ryan and Brendon didn’t know each other super well yet. Their fighting really got going this summer as they tried to figure out how to work together. Both guys talked a lot about how they were at each other’s throats this summer because Ryan wanted Brendon to deliver each line a very specific way, but Ryan wasn’t able to sing well enough yet to explain what was in his head to Brendon... and Brendon couldn’t read minds. (This post gets more into why Ryan wanted Brendon to front the early band). It wasn’t hard to spot that this general source of conflict was never fully resolved. Basically, Ryan needed creative control and wanted things done exactly the way he envisioned them, but Brendon was never going to be a precise extension of Ryan... and that wasn’t a healthy long-term setup for either guy. They both talked during the early Fever era about their challenges in navigating their work relationship (which is different from their friendship). They would mention the previous fighting and then claim that they were getting along better now, but then a few months later they’d reveal that some of the same conflict had still been happening but apparently now they had learned how to work together. That pattern continued. Ryan told The Miami Herald towards the end of the Fever era that “it was really frustrating at times, too, trying to get across to [Brendon] how I wanted a part to sound or how I wanted it to come across emotionally. We’re still trying to find that balance of understanding each other.” Spoiler alert: they did not find that balance in 2007 lol. (This is definitely not context for the spilt btw... it’s barely scratching the surface of all the creative differences that grew between them. I’m just saying that they did their best to make this early setup work when it was necessary).
Matt Squire had a degree in psychology, which I think probably helped this summer lol. 
The Daily Telegraph had a funny quote from Ryan about how this summer went: “We were making things up in our heads that weren't there, and on top of the stress of trying to finish the record, we were living in a one-bedroom apartment with four people on bunk beds. Everyone got on everybody's nerves. Someone would write a new part for a song and someone else would say they didn't like it just because you ate their cereal that morning.”
Spencer & Brent were still 17 while the band recorded AFYCSO. The band sometimes focused on that number in interviews because it made them sound younger to say “we were 17 when we made our first record.” Ryan & Brendon were 18, though! 
The band’s first tour with Acceptance was announced in July. The guys left Maryland around the third week of July to head back to Vegas. Then they had a couple weeks to literally learn how to be a band and play their songs live.
Their first show was on August 12th at The Alley in Vegas. They played their second show in Ohio en route to the east coast to join the Take Cover Tour. So their third show ever (as Panic! at the Disco) was on a national tour opening for Acceptance.
Ryan would have been starting his sophomore year of college at the point when the band started touring (if he hadn’t dropped out of school).
Ryan turned 19 at the end of August. Spencer was still 17 when the band started touring, but then he turned 18 in September. Brent & Brendon were also 18 during this first tour.
Ok now the Fever era had started, so I’ll kind of wind down here. These selfies were from late 2005 btw (not high school). Ryan is 19 here:

Ryan started dating Jac around Halloween 2005 (they’d been flirting on lj for over a year) and Brendon met Audrey around that point. Those relationships were really short-lived... they lasted for like 4 months and the guys were on tour for a good chunk of that time. Audrey & Jac took a ton of pictures, though, so maybe that’s why their presence could seem more significant these days? Both Brendon & Ryan had other girlfriends in 2006 who were around longer.
The band was out of their van at the end of 2005. And they were getting really big super fast (like they should not have been opening for TAI in early 2006 – that wasn’t fair to the headlining band).
Ryan wasn’t in high school at any point while he was in P!ATD. I’ve seen a couple fans these days who think that Ryan was like 17 years old in pictures from spring 2006... but those same fans still seem to understand that Ryan’s 21st birthday was in 2007 (so idk how their math works).
Ryan just looked really young in early 2006. He was actually half a year away from turning 20 here:

He wasn’t a teenager during the Nothing Rhymes With Circus Tour either... he was 20 years old and would have been in his junior year of college. 
Also, I think the fact that there are a ton of pictures from certain seasons might make it feel like those things happened for a longer period of time than they actually did (ex: Brendon only wore the lavender hoodie for a few weeks in summer 2006). Ryan wore dramatic stage makeup during parts of June–December 2006 and then he was totally over it. He made several comments during the Pretty. Odd. era that were pretty discounting of that phase of his life (and made me feel silly for ever loving it). But I did appreciate how Ryan went through a lot of phases while he was in the band, fully embraced each one while he was in it, and then could totally drop it as he moved forward & kept building on his interests.
Ok I’ll just stop now before this post gets even longer. The point is that Ryan Ross was not in high school when he wrote AFYCSO, but the other band members were. The end.

I was just watching good omens and I came up with some questions, but I didn't know whom to ask, so I was digging around for go analysis blogs and found you. *takes a breath* So, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on why Heaven's camera angles are the way they are. I noticed that, in heaven, the camera tends to focus on the characters' heads specifically, so they fill most of the screen. Either it's a meta reason or a reference to something (like Newt with the Office) that I'm not getting. That's the main thing, but I've also wondered why exactly Aziraphale uses the verb "fraternize" in the 19th century. It seemed an odd pivot from caring about Crowley's safety to Heaven's rules. Hello! Omg yes, let's talk Good Omens cinematography.
First, the obligatory Analysis Disclaimer: I doubt there's a specific interpretation that you're just not getting, some singular, "correct" reading of the scene(s). Two years past release, I'm positive the fandom as a whole has come up with plenty of ideas (I mostly hang on the periphery. I'm far from up to date with GO meta), but any and all of it will, by nature, be subjective. Thus, all I can offer is my own, personal interpretation.
So for me? It's about intimacy.
Not intimacy in the sense of friendship, but rather the broad idea of closeness. Confidentiality. Emotion. Knowledge. Understanding by means of literally getting into the thick of these conversations. I love the camerawork in Heaven (and elsewhere) because the camera itself acts like a person — an additional party to these interactions. And, since we're the ones watching this show via the camera, it makes it feel as if we're peeking into scenes that are otherwise private. Obviously all cinematography does this to a certain extent, the camera is always watching someone or something without acknowledging that we're doing the watching (outside of documentary-esque filmmaking), but GO uses angles and closeups to mimic another person observing these scenes, someone other than the characters involved.
The easiest example I can give here is when Michael makes their call to Ligur. Here, the camera is positioned up on the next landing of the staircase, as if we're sneaking a look down at this otherwise secret call. There's even a moment when the camera pans to the right to look at them through the gap in the railing, briefly obscuring Michael from our view.

Here, a standard expectation of any scene — keep your character in focus — is done away with to instead mimic the movements of someone actually hiding in the stairwell, listening in on the conversation. It creates that feeling of intimacy, as if we're really there with Michael, not just watching Michael through a screen. The camerawork acts like a person overhearing an illicit conversation prior to falling back on mid/closeup shots. We're spying on them.
To give a non-Heaven example, the camera helps us connect with Aziraphale during Gabriel's jogging scene. It's hard to show through screenshots, but if you re-watch you'll see that the camera initially keeps them both in the frame with full body shots, allowing us to compare things like Gabriel's unadorned gray workout clothes with Aziraphale's more stylish outfit; one's good jogging form and the other's awkward shuffle. However, this distance also creates the sense that we're jogging with them, we're keeping pace.
That is, until Aziraphale begins to lag. Then the camera lags too, giving them both the chance to catch up, so to speak.

Until, finally, Aziraphale has to stop completely and the camera, of course, stops with him. We're emotionally attuned to Aziraphale, not Gabriel, and the camerawork reflects that. Even more-so when we cut to a low shot of Gabriel's annoyed huff at having to stop at all, making him appear larger and more imposing. Because to Aziraphale, he is.

This work carries over into Heaven's other scenes. The closeups are pretty much a given since, whether it's Gabriel realizing Aziraphale has been "fraternizing" with Crowley (more on that below!), or Aziraphale choosing to go back to Earth, the scenes in Heaven are incredibly important to the narrative. Closeups allow the viewer to get a good read on each character's emotional state — focusing on minute facial changes as opposed to overall body language — and that fly-on-the-wall feeling is increased as we literally get an up close and personal look at these pivotal moments.

Compare a shot like this one of Gabriel to the line of angels ready for battle. We don't get closeups on any of their faces because their emotions aren't important. Yes, that's in part because they're background characters, not main characters, but a lack of emotion — their willingness to enter this war without question — is also the point of their presence in this scene. So they remain a semi-identical, nearly faceless mass that runs off into infinity down that hallway, not any individual whose inner life we get a peek at via a closeup.
I particularly like Aziraphale's conversation with the angel... general? Idk what to call this guy. He's just gonna be Mustache Angel. But, getting back on track, his scene has a lot of over the shoulder shots which, admittedly, are pretty common. From a practical perspective they're used to help the audience situate both characters in the scene — you're here, you're there, this is how you're spaced during this conversation — but it can also help emphasize that closeness between them. Keeping both characters in the shot connects them and though Aziraphale and Mustache Angel definitely aren't on the same page here, those shots help cue us in to the unwanted intimacy of this moment. They're both angels... even though Aziraphale no longer aligns himself with them. They're both soldiers in a war... but Aziraphale will not fight. This angel has a list of Aziraphale's secrets, including that he once had a flaming sword and lost it... but Aziraphale doesn't want to admit those circumstances to him. This angel wouldn't understand, even if he did. Intimacy here, connection and closeness, is something discomforting because Aziraphale can no longer embrace those similarities. They put him (and us) out of sorts, so when we get them both in frame, that connection creates tension, not relief.

And many of those over the shoulder shots are given sharp angels, or the camera is placed too close to the "off screen" party. Compare a shot like Luke and Rey to Aziraphale and Mustache Angel. Here, Luke is a clean, solid line on the left side of the screen, just enough there to cue us in to where he is in relationship to Ray, In contrast, Mustache Angel's mustache is Too Close and proves rather distracting. Rey and Luke are connecting here over being Jedi with responsibilities to uphold (or at least, Luke will acknowledge that connection later lol); Mustache Angel is forcing a connection with Aziraphale that makes everyone uncomfortable.

We are too close to him here. He feels too close to Aziraphale too. This whole conversation is upsetting and discomforting, pushing Aziraphale to finally choose which side he's on (his own with Crowley). The shots aren't meant to subtly keep the audience from getting lost and then otherwise be unobtrusive, we're supposed to be Very Aware of this angel's body and how close he's getting to the character we've come to identify with — both literally (he's leaning in) and in terms of forcing Aziraphale to finally make his choice.
When Mustache Angel marches forward and gets all up in Aziraphale's face, the camera positions itself behind Aziraphale in a way that makes it feel like we're hiding behind him, with Aziraphale taking up far more of the screen than Luke does. Like the scene with Michael or running with Gabriel, the camera often likes to mimic a "realistic" response to these events. This angry, shouty angel is getting closer, best take a step back and stay out of sight behind Aziraphale, holding his ground.

These closeups also serve as a nice contrast to the wide and longshots we get of Heaven. It's an imposing place with skyscrapers in the distance, lots of steel, immaculate floors, and endless white. It's overwhelming and it's cold. But then we cut to those mid-shots of Gabriel and Michael, telling us that they're in control of it all.
Aziraphale? Aziraphale is not in control. Not now, anyway. When he appears in Heaven we get a longshot to show off this endless void and he's just another, tiny speck in it. If he weren't flailing around — an acting move that likewise helps sell how out of his depth he is — it's unlikely you'd even notice him. Aziraphale's clothing and hair blends in perfectly with the background. He's forgettable. Easily overlooked. Someone to underestimate. And when he moves, he has to come to the camera. We don't cut to Aziraphale to establish control like we do with Gabriel. He's left to awkwardly shuffle up to Mustache Angel until he's finally come into view.

Yet when Aziraphale makes his decision, he aligns himself with the brightest, most colorful, most interesting thing in the room: Earth. Earth, with all its messy individuality, is the antithesis to Heaven's controlled uniformity and a bright blue orb hanging in the midst of all this white helps remind us of that. Aziraphale rejects becoming one of the identical soldiers and instead literally reaches out for the one thing in Heaven that doesn't fit in.

When he leaves, we get an extreme closeup for the first time. Mustache Angel is pissed and as such we not only get a good look at his face in the aftermath of Aziraphale's choice, but that extreme closeup on his mouth as he's shouting too. It's like he's shouting directly at us, the viewer who is currently cheering on Aziraphale's decision. There's a war, dammit... but we don't care. Not in the way he cares, anyway.

So there's a lot! And I could probably go on, but apparently I'm only allowed to add 10 images per post now (tumblr what the actual fuck if anyone knows a way around this please share!) and I've already had to merge a bunch of images like an animal. Simply put, I don't think Aziraphale bringing up fraternizing is a pivot from one to the other — from caring about Crowley to caring about Heaven's rules. I mean yes, Aziraphale is lagging behind Crowley in terms of rebellion and a part of him is, at this point, absolutely concerned with how he'll come across to the higherups, but that worry doesn't stem solely from a (now very shaky) desire to obey for the sake of obeying. The thing is, Aziraphale's disobedience is, by default, also Crowley's disobedience. If they're friends and they're ever found out, they'll both get in trouble. Which, we know from the end of Season One, basically means being wiped from existence. That's horrifying! And it's a horror that threatens them both. I don't think Aziraphale cares about rules for the sake of rules; after all, he started off by giving away his sword, lying to God, is currently meeting with Crowley anyway... this angel has always ignored/bent the rules — established and implied — that don't suit him. Rather, he cares about the rules if he thinks they have a chance of being enforced. If there will be consequences for breaking and bending them. This is still about caring for Crowley (as well as saving his own, angelic skin). If they're found out, Crowley dies. And, as we the viewer learn, Heaven was indeed observing them that whole time. There was always legitimate risk attached to this relationship. Aziraphale's fear, hesitance, and at times forceful pleas to stop this stem as much from Aziraphale worrying about Crowley's safety as they do a learned instinct to obey the rules without question. He pushes to end the relationship because the relationship threatens the only thing Aziraphale cares about more than that: Crowley himself.
As for the term "fraternizing," that's a loaded one! I won't go into a whole history lesson here, but suffice to say it has military roots: to sympathize as brothers with an opponent. That is literally what Crowley and Aziraphale are doing. They are an angel and a demon, supposedly innate enemies, supposedly poised for an inevitable war... yet they've formed an incredibly strong kinship. They've both learned to love their enemy, the thing every army fears because, well, then your army won't fight (just as Aziraphale won't). However, beyond the enemy implications, "to fraternize" eventually took on a sexual meaning: to not merely love as a brother, but to lay with the enemy too, usually women from enemy countries (because, you know, heteronormativity). Nowadays, "to fraternize" often implies a sexual component. I've been rewatching The Good Wife lately and in one subplot, the State's Attorney cracks down on fraternization in his office. He doesn't mean his employees are forming bonds with assumed enemies, he means his employees are having sex on his office couch. So Aziraphale's phrasing here carries a LOT of weight. He's both reminding Crowley of their stations in the world — you are a demon, I am an angel, us meeting like this can have formal, irrevocable consequences for us both — as well as, given the fact that this is a love story, drawing attention to the depth of this relationship. They love one another, as more than just friends. Though whether Crowley's scathing "Fraternizing?" is a response to Aziraphale falling back on the technicalities of their positions, or acknowledging a love he's yet to overtly admit and commit to — or both! — is definitely up for debate.

Alright! Here goes my Bugsnax Grumpus last name headcanon!
(This ended up being way longer than I thought it would've been, oh god-)
I think we all can agree that the headcanon where a Grumpus child has their parent's combined last names as their own last name is a very common headcanon people share. It's a good one! Even I like it a lot. And when applied to OCs or fankids it makes for some hilarious names.
It'd make sense in-canon and I feel like it gives the Grumpus world more depth as their own little tradition. (Honestly give me ANY culture/tradition headcanon for Grumpuses PLEASE THOSE ARE MY FAVORITEEEE I even had one for teeth a while ago that I may share publicly one day!!)
But I've been thinking about this, especially because of Cromdo and my own OCs - Neddy and Rason Honeyfidget. With Rason being Neddy's dad, if we only used this headcanon then Neddy shouldn't have this last name... Well, there's a lore reason why he doesnt and that is that his mother has died while he was still an egg, a while before hatching. Rason made him take on "Honeyfidget" only.
But that's just the backstory that got me thinking at the name traditions as a whole, so I'll try to avoid OC talk any further to make this friendlier for others who do not know about my OCs and are just interested in reading this headcanon.
Another headcanon I want to mention as I apply it to my own is the headcanon that Triffany changed her last name to Bronica's last name as a way to honor her. You can definitely change your name to anything you want in the Grumpus world, but changing your last name to a relative's like your grandparent's last name is possibly quite common!
And now I want to bring up Cromdo and the fact he is divorced. It has been confirmed that Cromdo is divorced and that his name may reflect that. (Though originally it was answered in the AMA that "Cromdo Face" just sounded funny at first and that it is possible that he did loose a half of his last name this way!)

Also I want to say that he wasn't abusive to the child mentioned! I remember there was a small confusion and drama about that. And I believe one of the devs on the YH discord mentioned that the 1# tie was a reference to Octodad. I do not remember if that confirmed that he is a father or if this answer by Sage was possibly wrong. He cannot see the child because he lost custody of them and lost in court. I do not have screenshot evidence of this. On a side-note I believe this could be one of the reasons he grew to be so money hungry. He didn't have enough money back then to keep his child. Again I want to say it could be ONE of the reasons and not the exact reason why he is this way.
This is more so of an ramble about my headcanon and what I want to say rather than some comprehensive thing, I am so sorry dfwergeg it's just how I write and explain things and I gotta mention it ALL (Great addition to "Guzma, your ADHD is showing")
Anyways, back on track with my HC.
But in this/my headcanon - Cromdo is divorced, he has had a child, and lost a part of his last name because of the divorce. I do not know how human marriage last name and stuff works properly so uh, see this as just speculation about a fictional species' culture rather than a carbon copy of our own. Which it clearly isn't LOL
I personally think that you can do multiple things with your last name when you get married! (And how it can affect the child's last name!)
Let's use Chandlo and Snorpy as examples, because I think they make great last name combinations. (And Snorplo is HELLA !!/pos)
- You can change your last name to your partner's last name, like we do commonly. (At least, with all the cultures I'm aware of and how marriage works for us.) Examples: Snorpy Funkbun, Chandlo Fizzlebean
(This one isn't very common to do!)
- You can change one half of your last name to a half from your partner's last name. Examples: Snorpy/Chandlo Funkbun/Fizzlebun
(Not as common either, but it still happens. It is actually more common than the first example. This was the case for Cromdo. I'll get back to this later. Grumps usually reserve this for their childen, which is the most common way of naming your children!)
- You keep your last name after marriage! Example: Snorpy Fizzlebean. Chandlo Funkbun. Canon examples would be Wambus and Triffany as well!
(Most common one to do as many wear their last names with pride or for other reasons - such as Trifanny when she changed her last name to Bronica's last name in this headcanon.)
Before we get to the kids again, I'm gonna go back to Cromdo and what can happen during divorce.
During divorce you can simply change your name back if you changed it, or keep the last name you took from your partner. Many simply change their last names back to what they were originally. Some, if they went by the half/half method, take away the half from their ex-partner only. This leaves some Grumpuses with one worded last names, such as Cromdo.
I think he changed a half of his last name during marriage. After the divorce, he didn't want to "wear" his partner's name anymore and changed his name to Cromdo Face only as Face was a part of his last name he was given at birth. This is most often the default for Grumpuses who have been divorced and took only half of their partner's last name.
If Cromdo - (or any Grumpus with a one-word last name! There's certainly rare cases of Grumpuses who have one word that didn't go through divorce. Possibly Grumpuses with bad attachment to one of their parents - so they change or remove that half of the last name they got from said parent. If their last name was a combination.) - were to re-marry he could take one half of his new partner's last name, or not change his name at all.
I want to get onto how naming a child would work with this situation, so I will talk about ways of naming children before I get back to this! And by naming I of course mean the last names only, lol.
(One rule is that, unless you change your name later in real life for any reason, it's gonna have to be one of these otherwise! Your Grump parent cannot make you up a new last name. It is just a part of the tradition they have. Though re-naming isn't looked upon in any way by the majority of Grumpuses as there are many reasons to do so!! Unless you're a jerk or you value your last name TOO much.) (Also when I say "you" I don't mean YOU as the reader literally. I mean a hypothetical Grumpus child!! It's just how I like wording things.
(...I've been writing for almost an hour, brain scrampled eg)
- Your last name is the combined name of your parent's last names. Examples: Fizzlebun, Funkbean
(VERY COMMON! Most Grumpuses will do this when first naming their child!)
- Your keep one of your parent's last name! Fizzlebean or Funkbun.
(This all works if you have multiple parents btw! Can make for SUPER crazy long and funny last names. This *all* applies to marriage, too! I hope it is easily applicable. I do not want to go in depth on that. Feel free to hit me an ask about this if you want me to explain it more in depth!! I wouldn't want to exclude polyamorous relationships ^^ )
(Also yes, last names that are just the same word repeated twice/multiple times are possible too. Fizzlefizzle, Funkfunk... How fun are these to say? Gives me Grumpus OC name ideas already.)
But yes! Back to Cromdo! Or any Grumpus in the same situation, but as I've stater earlier, Cromdo is just an example here. If he were to re-marry and NOT change his name, there's two posibilities:
His new partner has a full last name.
In this situation, if they have a child they can keep the full last name from Cromdo's partner. Or they can have one word from his partner + Face. For reasons stated below the child cannot have "Face" as their only last name.
His new partner has a one-worded, short last name like he does.
In this situation, if they have a child they have to name it a combination of their last name's. No exception. Having a short last name is a sign of something happening in your life, and it is traditionally not put onto a child, unless they are adopted with no last name. That still counts as something that happened in their life, as their birth parents possibly just gave them away with no care in the world.

At this point I am almost completely off track, so please do ask me questions as I am not sure where I completely left off - Or rather if there is something I forgot that I wanted to mention.
By the way, for combining last names and such, you can also mis-match! Doesn't even have to be combinations. This applies to everything, even for (Full last name + one-word last names) where it makes sense the most. Examples: Beanfizzle, Bunfunk, Bunbean, Bunfizzle, Beanbun, Beanfunk. I'm personally a big fan of Bunfunk and Beanbun :P)
And this applies to siblings, too! It isn't uncommon for parents naming their children mis-matched last name combinations if they have multiple ones. (This ties into my headcanon for Filbo's many siblings and that he isn't a single child. He's in a big household and has at least 2 siblings. ONE OF WHICH I want to make into an OC! This requires me to make the parents, too, but I am not so bothered about that :P)

PatB: Snowball Ep Talk
You know, I really do love the episode Snowball (my personal favorite AKOM episode) but I don’t think I’ve ever talked about it here much, and if I did it’s probably really only because of the flashback sequence.

Okay so all looks good so far. Chain letter scheme and superstition, a standard introduction to Brain’s latest plot of world domination. All looks good. Plus I just like this shot of Pinky. Don’t mind me, just starting off light here with a smushed Pinky.

“I met a Snowball today! Right here in the lab!” -Pinky
You know, I just find the implications of this line hysterical. This means that Snowball was in the lab that day, waiting for the moment to strike, and he definitely pushed his stolen chain letter through the mail slot. 
And then he lets Pinky see him, and no it’s not just a passing glance either cause Pinky specifically describes a tattoo with an A and a circle and points to his leg. Which means Snowball deliberately lifted the fur on his leg and showed his tattoo to Pinky. 
Like, wow.

“It means, Pinky, that evil lurks among us. By the name of Snowball! SNOWBALLLLLLLL!” -Brain 
Talk about a bad breakup. *Alexa play Bad Blood*
Personally I think one of the interesting visual cues is that Snowball purposely plants himself into the mice’s space. There’s a lot of that in this episode. He knows how to rile up Brain and hit him where it hurts, namely through Pinky. 
Brain values his personal space, and he values a sense of control. When Snowball invades that space, Brain loses control, and his anger can lead him to make some very ill-informed decisions. Which is exactly what Snowball aims for. 
“You think Pinky is an asset?” 
“Anything I can take from you is an asset.”
Ah yes, Snowball’s mission statement. Crush everything Brain has into dust.

The flashback sequence. Dear God this flashback sequence. They were both so cute! 
You know, it’s really sad that a younger Brain acted more like Pinky. Making silly faces and trying to get someone to laugh are such Pinky things to do. I know canon is loose but if you consider this flashback taking place shortly after Brain was captured from the wild, then young Brain didn’t gain a grasp on what happened to him until after the gene splicer.

Ok but Brain was literally right there when the gene splicer exploded. Imagine having your cranium size dramatically increase, you’re injured, you’ve suddenly gained sentience, and as if all that wasn’t enough, you see the gene splicer explode with your only friend inside. 
Oh, and said friend’s mind was probably damaged in the explosion and now he hates your guts. And though you’re angry with him for his betrayal, some part of you will never stop caring about him.

Once again, Snowball needs to learn to keep his hands to himself. 
This conversation here establishes Snowball as the perfect third character. He appears only in a handful of eps, but he’s fun to watch and love to hate. Snowball challenges the mice’s relationship. Snowball sees the weak points; the insults, the reliance on each other, and twists them to his advantage. And Pinky even admits he’s hurt by Brain’s insults occasionally, though he still loves being around him.

“Pinky, the Brain doesn’t care about you. He’s just using you.” 
“No, he’s not.”
It’s really interesting to me how Pinky denies Snowball’s statement, yet his ears go down to show that he’s affected by the idea of being used. Pinky and the Brain may be night and day, but one thing they do have in common is their tendency to deny certain things. Brain with emotions and affection and Pinky with concepts he’d rather not admit the possibility of. 
Coming back to this later.

I just find it hilarious how they clearly run around where Snowball can see and hear them. Like they just shout Snowball’s name in the middle of the room. You’re terrible at being sneaky little mice. Please.

Well, it’s awful nice of Snowball to engage in nepotism and offer Brain a position in his administration...and then tempt Pinky with an amusement park when he refuses. 
You really gotta appreciate the complexity of Snowball’s plans. Stealing the chain letter fails->plant seeds of doubt in Pinky’s mind, even if this doesn’t work right off the bat, the idea will still be there-> take over a corporation->impersonate Bill Gates->When the mice show up, offer to co-rule the world on expectations that Brain will refuse->make co-ruler offer to Pinky->wait for Brain to open his big mouth and drive Pinky away. 
All to take everything Brain has. His dignity, Pinky, his meager resources. Like holy Snowball, Batman.

And then Snowball reveals the amusement park he had specifically built for Pinky. 
And here we have the most heartbreaking line of the ep. If I had the ability video edit I would’ve put the entire line on audio because Brain’s tone is very important here. It’s about 12:38 to 12:57 in the ep if you want to see for yourself. 
“Oh, go ahead, Pinky. I don’t need you. What did you think, I just have you around so I can steal your brilliant ideas and claim them as my own? That I’m just using you, Pinky? Oh yes, I’m using you for your brilliance!” 
First of all, very poor word choice, especially to someone who has trouble understanding sarcasm. I just want to dissect this statement here. 
The Literal Meaning: You’re an idiot to think you were ever more than an assistant. 
This is what Pinky hears. 
But if you listen to Brain’s tone rather than just reading the line, he sounds genuinely hurt that Pinky would ever be tempted by something as frivolous as an amusement park. It’s Pinky, so he just sees ‘ooh fun rides, cotton candy, and carnival games’! 
But Brain is perfectly aware that this is Snowball’s well-crafted method of taking away the only thing he truly has, and he knows it’s working. And he’s hurt.

Unfortunately, all Pinky hears is that Brain was only using him. That Brain values him for manual labor and an extra hand only, rather than a treasured companion. The fact that Brain often falls short of making Pinky feel appreciated just adds to this.

And now that he no longer has Pinky, Brain’s spirit is crushed. Brain is persistent, but without Pinky, he has no reason to be. 
As far as he knows, his only two friends have turned their backs on him and couldn’t care less if he has nowhere else to go.

OK I think this one shot establishes what the world would be like under Snowball. His name is everywhere, and he tells the population to do stupid things just to bask in his own superiority. 
However, I can’t see Brain putting his name on every building so frivolously like this if he ruled the world. Sure, he’d name a bunch of things after himself and Pinky, but it would be more meaningful to them. 
Brain wants humanity to advance, not regress.

Poor Pinky. Despite all this new extravagance and luxury, he’s also lonely. The room and bed are large, but it lacks personality. He’s sleeping with an ACME Labs snow globe, and other than a reference to Citizen Kane, it also shows that he’s not happy with this. 
The worst thing in the world for these mice is separation from each other.

I love how their characters are reflected in the mecha designs (also I had no idea Snowball was Iron Man!) 
Snowball’s is overall the more efficient design. It’s also much more combat ready and violent. In comparison, Brain’s suit is simply operated with a bunch of levers. It’s alright for peaceful situations like getting around faster or simply blending with a human population, but in a straight up fight the levers take too much time to operate. 
Snowball is more efficient than Brain, and while he’s got the ego, he lacks the insecurities that hold Brain back. His confidence makes him such an effective foe. And more importantly, Snowball doesn’t value Pinky’s companionship. He’s a tool and nothing more. Compare that to Brain. While Brain struggles at showing it, he ultimately wants Pinky’s input and values his jumbo-sized heart. 
Somewhat off topic, but I feel like the reboot missed this aspect of Brain and made him too overly edgy and violent (reboot!Brain would probably prefer Snowball’s mecha design over his counterpart’s). The only time Brain should become violent, if not for comedy, is when he’s protecting Pinky. His plans should have a level of restraint to them, and Pinky is the moral compass.

This is such an insanely clever move for Pinky. I feel like Brain would be like ‘oh my god Pinky!’ and then ‘wow, that’s actually brilliant what the heck is this tingling feeling’.

Ok fine I realize the ending to this ep is a reference to North by Northwest cause they somehow got to Mt. Rushmore but still 
Weird tangent but North by Northwest’s ending bothers me (not gonna fault this ep as it’s just a parody)? I’m sorry the girl is barely hanging onto Mt. Rushmore, the dude pulls her up, and then they have sex in a car. The sudden transition always seemed weird to me.

there it is! kama interlude analysis by a kama fan!
WELL. LIKE IT SAYS IN THE TITLE: this is just my own thoughts!! youre free to think whatever u want !! i am just putting my own knowledge into words because i genuinely love kama, and i would like for kama’s depth to be understood by the NA fandom a little more!! i try to stay as close as possible to their character in everything i do because i believe that the more in character they are, the funnier/more interesting content ppl will produce.

with that said, let’s go!!
kama’s interlude begins with guda passing the hell out because of exhaustion and then waking up in a dream sequence where kama treats them to some relaxing adventures, stuff to take their mind off heavy things!! first dream sequence is kama roleplaying a highschool setting where they’re dating.

i like this because they openly admit that its an illusion, breaking the immersion but as long as youre okay with roleplaying, they’ll continue it LOL  at some point, caesar mentions the student council president and arjuna appears behind him

since this is an illusion that kama made, i’ve been wondering about the fact that the way servants conduct eachother in this interlude is mostly because that’s how kama envisions they would act in a highschool setting, in an amusement park and finally with eachother (mostly for confirmed couples such as siegbryn, consort yu and her hubby etc...). suzuka and sei being gyarus is obvious, but arjuna as the student council president... is so cute???!!! i MEAN IT FITS ?! THATS A GREAT IDEA KAMA!!!! ANYWAY

this is kama’s first monologue and since they’re primarily the god of lust, all of the more vanilla stuff they mentions such as sharing a pair of headphones embarrasses them since its so tame. ITS CUTE !!! kama expects you to be horny in class !! what are you doing thinking about hand holding !!! medusa saves u from that tho with a direct reference to her relationship with kama’s vessel

this is interesting !! and reassuring !!! i think that kama as a character has a lot of depth and just reducing them to “sakura” would be a waste and this interlude shows how different they are from her. but they’re also similar! sakura went through a lot just like medusa says and kama does have trauma related to shiva. its not the same circumstances but the same kind of suffering which explains the nuance here. and what i like about chaldea is that there’s been multiple instances where its been proven that servants can grow thanks to their relationships with guda (most common example: leveling up your bonds) BUT ALSO, saint graph evolution (alts). and as a kama fan i’d like to see them happy someday and this interlude as a whole is proof of their healing/coping because of the time they spent in chaldea and how they interact with others. more on that later ! here, they don’t recognize medusa which is normal since they’re not sakura (someone else entierly), but...

KAMA ASSASSIN (the servant in your chaldea) is neither KAMADEVA or SAKURA MATOU or MARA. they’re a MIX OF PARTS OF THE THREE. creating an entierly new person(in this case, servant) !!!! it might sound like i’m repeating myself, but this is important!!!!!!!!! i will say this multiple times so people remember it !!! and if u already had this figured out: GOOD JOB I LOVE U !!!
Kamadeva (the god) has many stories, ones where he was born from concepts (dharma and shraddha), one where his parents are brahma and sarasvati, one where his parents are vishnu and lakshmi, stories about his reincarnation after his death where his parents are krishna and rukmini, his love with Rati and so on. We all know Sakura’s backstory since this is nasuverse. And Mara is a demon, an entity that tried to corrupt Buddha and prevent him from reaching enlightenment/stray from the path. Kama assassin has parts from all of these entities which explains why they have a vague longing for Rati, why they have a soft spot for Medusa and why they have an affinity with Kiara(and also like talking about corrupting u !). 
they then mention how a japanese highschool setting is fun and all i have to say is: i’m gonna make an indo fam delinquent vs student council au out of this one folks !!!!!!!! i gotta !!!

well with their stage 1 it was expected but without the translation i have to say that i was scared shitless! because people hate thinking! and even if kama clearly tells you that it’s a charade, u know a JOKE. A DREAM SEQUENCE. DONT BE A CREEP. KAMA INTENDED FOR IT TO BE WHOLESOME. i know some ppl wont use their brains. but u know its fgo and degenerates are everywhere. 
anyways. family bonding time ensues until another monologue appears!!

exactly like before, kama mentions myths that belonged to kamadeva. Meaning that the Kama in our chaldea isn’t the Kamadeva we know and is not Pradyumna either but the fact that the writers chose to have kama acknowledge it is very reassuring !!! Because it means that they’ve chosen to make it a part of their (complicated) history. Kama says that Pradyumna is the myth about themself they know the least, once again proving us that the Kama in our Chaldea (Assassin) is a different entity and that they were summoned to the throne upon their death, the moment they were burned by Shiva’s flames and became Ananga, in any case they’re still familiar with all of their own myths. it allows us to keep heroic spirits separate from their original myths. Obviously! And in the case of pseudo-servants, it allows us to keep them separate from their vessels. Cuz this is a fanservice japanese game. Andddd the fandom likes forgetting this fact quite a lot i’ve noticed. As a person who loves thinking about tons and tons of headcanons for fun, this allows us a lot of space ! Because this is fate/grand order at its base. Nasuverse. 
I’m glad that the interlude explains it so clearly, it’s very good !! Because the majority of myths from every culture are confusing, family trees are confusing, names are confusing, powers and attributes are confusing... its a mess !!!! the fgo characters we know are just cut from their own respective timelines/historial figures so the writers can organize themselves more easily. Like cutting halves from a big cake. Kama (Assassin) is the Kama that died from Shiva’s flames and became the universe ONLY. In Nasuverse, Arthur Pendragon is a woman. Anastasia Romanov NEVER had a demon familiar named Viy in real life despite the creature being part of russian folklore. u know ! im russian i can testify dude !! 
hopefully everyone got this bc i wont be explaining this any further dude, its exhausting !!!!!! bangs my hands on the table !!!!! 
ANYWAYS kama mentions “eternal pain that turns [them] into ash” being their key element. Their trauma is at the center of their heroic spirit self, what they are as a servant. This suffering is tied to everything they do, why they’re so lazy, why they’re so lax, why they’re so detached from their job.  But they’re not detached from their role. And “job” and “role” have different connotations here. They refuse to work as a cupid because of obvious reasons. BUT. They’re not detached from their role as the God of Love, as the God of Passion. The embodiment of those feelings. This whole interlude is proof ! They’re giving u free therapy because they Love you. Passion. They feel your love. Passion. They acknowledge how much fun you’re having. How passionate you are about certain things. They might seem extremely detached and hateful, but they aren’t. They’re one of the most empathetic servants there is. And their ability to love everything, even the things they hate is what makes them so miserable. Because it’s a part of them. Because the concept of Kama in hinduism is linked to them. Be it lust or simply the passion born from anything you do where you’re enjoying yourself. (quote:  “ the term also refers to any sensory enjoyment, emotional attraction and aesthetic pleasure such as from arts, dance, music, painting, sculpture and nature “. R. Prasad (2008), History of Science, Philosophy and Culture in Indian Civilization )
... I’d like to say that this contrast with Mara is interesting. And that i’m glad the writers chose to add in Mara to the kama assassin Beast mix. 
Because the anger Mara feels can become a drivepoint for Kama. I’ve always believed that anger and sadness are two sides of the same coin, it’d explain how layered Kama is and how valid their emotions are. Constantly torn between love and hate. An eternal grudge (i don’t deserve to be hurt like this) and an eternal misery(maybe i do deserve to be hurt like this). 
i wish they were my roommate <3 oh fuck ree got emotional wait where were we.
OH YEAH
i think kama saying that they dislike being involved with other indian servants because theyre linked to shiva is a feeble attempt at trying to keep up a strong front because they still love them in the end. cuz that’s how kama is ! after a while they’ll get bored of bullying ganesha and ashwatthama. they’ll get interested in rama because their respective mythos are linked even if their servant selves have no connection. hell, at the end of the interlude they talk about parvati and how they themself changed and realized things. BUT OH WELL, THATS STUFF FOR ANOTHER POST HEHE thats just ree wanting kama to b happy yall move along !!

ok this is interesting !! i think that the interlude showing us that parvati feels a semblance of guilt is character dev. proof for what i mentioned before!! in ookuu parvati felt quite ..unsympathetic to me, even if kama is a beast who wants to annihilate humanity, when u think about it, at their core their grudge is because of her and shiva’s betrayal. and here, she properly apologizes for making kama so upset. this is heartwarming to me since i dislike thinking that members of the indo fam hate eachother :( same goes for arjuna and karna, at some point i’d like for them to act like bros normally and finally be comfy. but anyways !!

this is actual proof of kama’s growth as a servant and how servants evolve in chaldea !! chaldea is not the same as a grail war, its a special, cut-off place and thats what makes it even more relaxing to think about. Everytime u summon a servant in ur chaldea u give them a chance to have fun with you, to have fun with other servants, to make amends, to start from scratch, to discover things they would’ve never known in their time (movies, video games, tons of different foods etc...), u give them a chance to relax. to grow !! this is the headcanon that im most attached to and im glad to see it be confirmed in the interlude of a character i love tbqh i had to stop and talk about that.

(i blow a kiss to the sky) is a little mess of a servant... a god, human crumbs and a demon... a total mess... im in love with them...

Robotech: Unboxing + Rant

Anime licensing and localization has come a long way since the dark ages of the medium where you had to track down old fan subbed VHS tapes or hope you can catch some heavily edited version of a show on one of your local networks before cable was even a thing. The latter describes the place in history that Robotech holds, and for many it was a landmark experience and a gateway into anime--and that should have been its legacy whole stop but well, corporate greed is a bitch. I’m sure I don’t have to sit here and explain the myriad of ways license holder Harmony Gold has more or less been super scummy. From downright patent trolling, to blocking any attempt at localizing certain series and even preventing video game releases; they have become infamous in the anime fandom--so much so to the point where I just don’t want to talk about Robotech anymore. 
Which is a damn shame! Robotech is legitimately a fairly fascinating and well crafted attempt at bringing over anime for its time. The writing is sharp, the voice acting holds up surprisingly well--and it is some of the earliest known roles for a bunch of now prolific voice actors in the anime dubbing community like Tony Oliver and Wendee Lee. Most importantly however the material is treated with respect, and while a bit clumsy at times, there is an obvious love from the staff being put into the work. It’s easy to see how generations grew up with this Frankenstein of an adaptation and became lifelong fans of anime. 
For me personally Robotech will always occupy the same part of my heart that loves the work of Ted Woolsey and other earlier localization figures who took a mess of bland too literal translations (sometimes ones that didn’t even make sense in English) and reworked them with a lot of character and charm despite some really insane restraints of the time. It’s not for everyone, but I do enjoy these early localizations for what they were.
Sadly it seemed Robotech would only be remembered in infamy for Harmony Gold and its (very well documented) downright criminal powers-that-be. Until this past April, where out of nowhere anime fans’ prayers seemingly have been answered. Now the agreement between the three companies is still not fully understood, and it’s hard to say for sure where this will go but for now I like to have goodwill that things will be different from now on. Which is what I want, I easily do love Robotech, and this new agreement brining new Robotech blu-rays is great, but I also want Macross blu-rays too! Hell, I don’t want just that but also Southern Cross and Mospeada releases too, even if they have to be on SD-BD. Over the recent years we have seen blu-rays for all kinds of tangentially related Robotech properties: Megazone 23, Zilion, Orguss, it would be great to have all of Macross as well as the main three series that comprise Robotech to go alongside with them on my blu-ray shelf.
With all that out of the way, I will stop ranting now and show off the most recent Robotech Collector’s Edition from Funimation as well as some comparisons to a past set I posses.

The box itself is absolutely gorgeous and the contents inside of high quality too. The asking price may be a bit steep but for fans it really does pay off.

I was especially impressed with the figure which I had no real interest in (and will still keep stuffed in the box lol) but was shocked to find out it can indeed transform between the three iconic forms of the Veritech fighter.

The blu-rays themselves are housed in a nice sturdy chipboard box and each set has unique art separate from the standard retail release.

Anyone familiar with Funimation’s previous release of the anime series Zillion will easily notice the similar “retro” (or maybe even VHS???) look of the packaging. 
I was somewhat annoyed at this graphic design choice when Zillion came out. I love older anime art and want to appreciate it for all its worth. I get how the vintage VHS look is a fun idea but still! Despite saying that however I ended up really liking it for this latest Robotech set. Probably helps that the o-cards aren’t made of the usual glossy paper stock and are instead really heavy and thick cardboard giving them an almost old book type feel.

The interior art for the amaray cases as well as the disc art are all great looking. I was especially impressed with the art used for the Masters Saga set which opted to feature protagonist Dana instead of a mech.

The earlier mentioned chipboard box. The entire set looks great in it but it does lead to my major complaint for Funimation about the packaging; it’s all Macross. Yes, the Macross Saga is great, hell it’s a common sentiment amongst fans that “The Macross portion of Robotech is the best part”. But really what makes Robotech what it is was the mixing of multiple shows. Really bummed out that Southern Cross or Mospeada got no love this time.

The Collector’s Edition blu-ray standing next to the 2013 A&E DVD set, which was the only one I could really find laying around at the time of this writing.

The first of these two images is a screenshot directly taken from the 2013 A&E DVD set, and the second of the two is a screenshot taken directly from the 2021 BD from Funimation. This pattern will be followed for all subsequent comparison shots; DVD on top then BD below it.

The colors really pop when the image is done right--with darker frames advantaging the most while brighter ones are too oversaturated.

Overall there is greater detail and the colors presented better reflect the original animation work in the BD but it isn’t too uncommon for it to look a bit garish and oversaturated at times too. 
I’d still say this BD upscale is a noticeable improvement at least from the 2013 DVD set I had on hand but well any fan of DBZ will know the song and dance with Funimation and how they remaster old footage. The similar issue of them working off a copy of a master and not the original film itself probably also is equally in play here as it is for their many botched DBZ sets. I’d also argue this set is a bit too heavy on grain (and I say that as a huge lover of grain) but the oversaturation may be the true culprit behind that feeling. 
Overall Funimation’s BD is a nice upgrade but I don’t see myself dipping any more into Robotech unless they actually can recreate the show from the original film master, by this point any more work will just be negligible.

It’s a steep price tag, and the entire series is fairly easy to stream now too if you have a Funimation account, but for the right kind of fan it makes a great piece for your collection. Until next time, let us all hold out hope for potential Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada blu-rays.

Gods of MoR
Religion is not that common in the MoR’s universe. However, with the existence of the After and its magic, the world is not totally secular. And there are still some who practice their own religions. Fair Gloria is perhaps the largest country to nationally have a God and the country’s nobles all practice (though Key, themself, is not actually religious) you may even find the soldiers of Rakea will say a quick prayer to whichever God will give them the bloodiest victory before battle.
Worship would probably be more common... if the Gods were still around. But the world, and even their angels, still function without them.
I’ll try to avoid too many details about that, as you can learn more about this and the various perspectives about it from Voca and, later, Zein in their respective books.
But I do have some facts I can share, including names at the bottom of this post.
1. The Gods are still alive.
2. The After is not a God.
3. Yes, the After is to blame for them being MIA.
4. I may share the story of what happened all those centuries ago before the first witch was born... but I may never, as well. 🤷‍♂️ Life doesn’t always give us answers.
And 5. All of the Gods, every one of them, are men. Cis, Trans, NB, they’re all mlm. I don’t have a lore reason for this, as much as I’ve tried to bullshit one lol, but I do have a meta reason; I wanted there to be a world in which the love of a man for another man is a good thing. It’s pure. It’s not predatory. It’s holy. It’s not wrong. It’s beautiful. I want the legends to be about wholesome, poetic, time-defying love between men. And so I decided the Gods of MoR will reflect that wish of mine.
The Gods do not feature prominently in any of the books, however their existence has still had a hand in my shaping this world, so it felt appropriate to mention them and give a little more information.
And under the cut is a screenshot of my list of the Gods that I keep, including the Gods of certain main characters, for those curious.

I am finally (finally!!) finishing Yuri on Ice. I started watching it when it first came out, then got impatient of waiting week by week for the next episode, so I figured I would binge watch it when it finished airing. Long story short, got busy and never finished it (I did listen to the soundtrack a bunch though).
So, I figured I would finally finish this show! I’ve been a super casual fan of figure skating since the 2014 Sochi Olympics and I knew a skating anime was going to come eventually, after Hanyu won the gold, so I was really stoked to watch YOI too, haha. Life just happened and I forgot about it.
(Not going to lie, I hate watching sports, except for equestrian events and archery occasionally, but I sat down for a brief moment and that so happened to be when Yuzuru Hanyu was skating his SP. It was the most serendipitous moment of my life haha.)
(But I really do mean “super casual fan”. I never dedicated the time to learn all of the terminology and don’t expect me to name any of the jumps. This will also be a super casual live blog.)
Episodes 1-2
Episode 1
When the animation for this anime is good, it really is good. I feel like skating is a bit tricky. If it’s not done right, it’ll probably look rather choppy since so much of the sport is flowing lines and the amount of athleticism it takes to make good performances look almost effortless.
I really like the opening sequence for this reason. The transition from their child-selves to their adult-selves and the reflection of one person’s career. I feel like I have no comments regarding the opening song. It’s got a catchy beat, the animation is gorgeous, and it’s one of the more memorable anime opening songs I’ve heard. It just fits the theme of the show so well, too.

The Makkachin phone cover is so cute. The amount of detail that went into this show really astounded me. The lanyard clasps and the words on his ID? The website? 
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to really hate chibi-cut-ins and those little interlude infodumps/intros that are common in anime (I think they work best in a manga medium, personally...), but that’s a personal thing.
First time I watched this, my reaction to Russian Yuri was “lol what’s your problem?? edgy little brat”. Still is haha. “I greatly object to sharing a name with a LOSER” is the vibe he gives off. He’s also lucky Yuri is a nice guy and didn’t just punch him for getting so up in his face and screaming at him.

Well, now that was just cruel. He’s having one of those “can it GET any worse” days, to which the universe answers “yes, yes it can”. I’m sure we’ve all had those days where nothing goes right and you just want to curl up and die (aka sleep) until it’s all over.
If there is one thing this show really did well as early as the first 3-4 episodes, it’s depicting Yuri’s mental state. His crushing disappointment in himself, everyone around him trying to cheer him up or talk about what comes next while he’s still just living in the moment, trying to get through the rest of this day.
Ha, my name is pretty common where I grew up, especially at the time I was going to school, and I relate so hard to turning because you hear your name only to realize no one was actually talking to you. Even worse for Yuri because it’s Viktor talking! His idol! Also, I felt it when he froze and walked away after Viktor asked if he wanted a photo with him.

Yeah, even in my hometown I never knew anyone who skated - ice or roller skating, aside from birthday parties. I personally have two left feet and I’m lucky I managed to stand on the ice without falling, but I never did figure out how to move. My dad had to pull me around (I was 10 or so?). But also, that scene adds some perspective to how Yuri is seen by others, which is important given we live in his head as the watchers of his story. It’s clear that his thoughts of himself don’t necessarily reflect what the public or his friends/family think of him.
A large part of the charm of this series, for me, was that Yuri feels like such a real person - him and his story, his doubts and his hopes (even his weight gain haha), are really relatable even if ice skating is so far removed from myself.

Ah, as usual, the live commentary over the skating that I half like because I have no clue what’s going on, but the other half of me just wants to listen and watch in peace lol
No comment on the double performance aside from: ALL THE BUDGET. But honestly if you’re not going to go ham on the performances (especially the best ones) in an anime about ice skating, why even bother lol.
Yuko had triplets. Triplets. I cannot even- (haha I love kids, I work with them for my job occasionally but having THREE of my own to go home would sound like a nightmare).

Doggo! But actually I just really like his apartment. I really like that they gave Viktor a standard poodle Yuri a miniature poodle because I feel like everyone including myself forgets the big floofs exist and in fact are the “standard” size, not the tiny guys.
HERE COMES THAT SCENE. The one that made the internet explode. I kind of still remember the night it aired, lol. I also can’t believe they got the green-light for that, haha.
I also love the social media posts in the ending. Social media in anime is always fun, it’s such a huge part of our lives nowadays. The little glimpses into the lives of the other skaters is not only fun, but makes them feel a little more alive, especially because they won’t be the center of the story.
Episode 2
I promise this one isn’t going to be as long.
This “farewell” gives me live action drama vibes. It’s hilarious.

It took me forever to figure out that the random English is likely because they’re supposed to be speaking in English to each other lol. It just makes sense.
At least one of the kids learned their lesson and asked before uploading haha.
Viktor not so subtly trying to find out if he likes or is dating anyone is hilarious. 
And Russian Yuri has a cat! I forgot about that. He does give off alley cat vibes.
Yuri, you literally just had an “ah-ha!” moment, but then couldn’t resist posting a pic of your new buy on social media lol...
I feel like people either like him or hate him (Russian Yuri), but to me he’s just such a teenage boy. They can be assholes sometimes, you know?? And hopefully they grow out of it haha.
I love Yuri’s smirk haha. Yup, don’t engage. He’s an angry 15 year old, you’re a grown ass adult. It’s really hard to forget age differences in anime but what self-respecting adult is actually going to have it out with a teenager being unreasonable?
I also totally forgot they nicknamed Russian Yuri, Yurio in the actual show lol.
OUCH that self-doubt.

Anyways, the first unofficial competition of the show starts next episode! I did see that one when it came out, but I think I stopped after episode 3...
