I want to make a rentry about screenreader accessibility!!
Why do you use a screenreader? Is it due to a disability?
What are common inaccessibility issues you come across?
What information would you like to see in an informational rentry or carrd about screenreaders, plaintext, and image descriptions?
Feel free to link to resources in your reblog for a resource masterlist as well!

please for the love of god stop censoring ur DNIs or trigger warnings with numbers n weird characters it is literally hell for screenreader users to listen to
a lil' lesson:
do: tw: bad thing
don't: tw‼️‼️‼️//// ɓ4ď tĥ1ñĝ
bc this is what it sounds like:
censoring trigger warnings also exposes it to people who have muted the word, so they'll be seeing the content anyway

we use a screen reader fairly often cus we struggle to read and have worsening vision- meanwhile the non-existence of alt text on images / image IDs is depressing as fuck
not to mention the amount of people who use alt text as a joke, completely exclusing groups of people

Hi, not quite sure what you mean, but if you're using standard emojis, they have a unicode label assigned to it. For example, 👍 reads as thumbs up with my screen reader. However, not all symbols are labeled. Hope that helps!
i’m gonna say what needs to be said. everyone here needs to start caring about disabled people. i’ve seen too many new blogs popping up that are completely inaccessible.
it’s great that people are continuing to keep making new genders! but people need to understand that while yes, your typing quirk is cool and all those symbols are pretty, they are so so inaccessible. screen readers can break trying to use those symbols.
and the worst thing? people have been saying this for so long and nobody cares enough to make a change. mogai/liom is supposed to be inclusive of disabled people and neurodivergent people, by not translating things or adding image descriptions you are excluding them completely. that’s all i’ll say

hi mod toby here. this is me rewriting my answer to an ask someone asked on anon because tumblr ate the whole thing when i saved it to drafts
the question was something to the effect of "why put IDs in the body of the post instead of alt text? /gq"
right. so, there are actually a few reasons to be listed
first of all, as we all know, tumblr is hardly a perfectly functional website. one facet of this affects alt text. it sometimes eats alt text. sometimes the alt text glitches out. sometimes it just doesn't show it. this means alt text isn't the most reliable on tumblr
secondly, at least in tumblr mobile (which is the main platform a good amount of people use tumblr on), the "ALT" button is small and hard to tap, especially if you have trouble with your motor skills, or if you have hand trembles, or if you don't have hands! this means it can be inconvenient to use
it's simply more accessible and convenient to everyone equally if the descriptions is there, not in alt text, not under a readmore (which is a whole other topic of discussion actually), right after the image
if this question was tumblr based, then these are the main reasons i have to put descriptions in the body of the post. i'm sure there are lots of other ones i couldn't think of
but, if you were talking generally, then there are a few more talking points
for one, not every website has an alt text button like tumblr does. this means descriptions put in the alt text aren't accessible to everyone, only people that use a screenreader
why would people without a screenreader want or need descriptions? well, there are different reasons and circumstances. it can be because they only need descriptions for certain things (e.g they only need it for eye straining images) and not everything, it can be because they haven't found a screenreader to their liking yet, or any other reason i can think of
the bottom line and the crux of the matter is, you don't know if everyone who needs a description can access an alt text. it's better to have it there when you don't need it, and can simply scroll past; than to have need of it and not be able to access it

Is adding alt text better or text under an image better for screenreaders?
Hello, great question! Alt text is the best option for screenreaders, since the feature was made to work with them! However, a plain text description (which is directly below an image and above any post captions) will also be read fine by screenreaders, although it can be annoying for a screenreader user to slog through empty alt text before hitting the post ID.
My personal standard is to use both features, since, as of the most recent consensus I've witnessed on Tumblr, it's most the broadly accessible practice. This is because not everyone who requires IDs uses a screenreader, and alt is not universally accessible on Tumblr for a few reasons; including both formats covers just about everyone! Some options for using both alt and plain text IDs at once is to do an abbreviated alt ID and a more in-depth one in the post body, or to preface "ID copied from alt" in the plain text ID so screenreader users know to skip the repeated information. I would appreciate if any screenreader users would like to provide commentary that I'm not qualified to give as well!

wall punch emojis
Tumblr media Tumblr media
uhhh yep what it says on the tin
shaded and unshaded versions, and these can be used for "FUCK i love this character/thing so much i can't express it other than punching wall" or "FUCK im so angry right now i cant express it other than punching wall (in digital space)"
please dont actually punch your walls its bad for you and the people around you this is silly okay
List: 1. a yellow guy punching a wall, the wall has cracks in it and the yellow guy is shaking and red in the face with anger, they have an intense expression 2. a yellow guy punching a wall, the wall has cracks in it and the yellow guy is shaking red in the face, they have an intense expression

First of the first and last of the last have grief that rhymes, but instead of bringing them together, it just gives them 3947287 layers of beef that they’re too stoic to act out about. (And then it brings them together. Later. Much later.)
