“An evening spent in the company of the most important woman in my life prompted me to reaffirm my convictions about how she makes me feel, and what I would like to forge between us. It was not a difficult desire to have, not in the least, but my heart was beating fast against my ribs, and I feared she might have heard it all the while.
I want to bind myself to this woman for all the life I have yet to live, and all the time that she would see fit to bless me with. I want our union to be recognised among kith and kin, and born witness to by the very stars.”

“Sokhatai and I would like to thank everyone who attended our ceremony of Eternal Bonding from the bottom of our hearts, we would not have had such a wonderful event were it not for the family, friends, and comrades who joined us on this most joyous occasion. Thank you, thank you, thank you! We love you all and wish each one of you great fortune and prosperity!”
“We hope to see you all again very soon on the vibrant jade grasslands of the Azim Steppe. Farewell, and may you forever walk with Nhaama’s blessings!”

1. The Flowing Sorrow — Primarily Bogen will use this face paint pattern and colour combination to indicate that he is either suffering from depression, or feels remorse over something he has done or has been done to him or his kin, and also to indicate general sadness or melancholy.
2. Hunter in the Grass — The hunt is a very important aspect of Xaela life and Bogen honours the traditions of the hunt with this face paint. If he is seen wearing this it usually means he is accompanying or will accompany his betrothed Sokhatai to the Steppes at some point for a Purbol, Dzo, or Baras hunt.
3. On the Warpath — Prolonged anger is a very rare emotion for Bogen to feel, but that doesn’t mean that he never experiences it. If there is a threat to his adoptive tribe, or the heat of battle stirs him up, he would likely paint his face in this pattern to indicate his aggression.
4. By Azim’s Fortune — Feeling fortunate is important to Bogen, given that disaster is not a stranger to him, so when he feels that he has gained something important, either material or spiritual, he will paint his face with gold paint in this pattern. This is also a paint pattern he would use during festivities or for ceremonies of eternal bonding, to bless the couple with good fortune.
5. The Funerary Shroud — As the name might suggest, Bogen only wears this face paint during funerals or ceremonies to honour the dead to show respect and offer condolences.
6. Bane of Spirits — Superstition was, and remains, an integral part of of Bogen’s life. He was always taught to guard against malevolent voidkin and wandering spirits by his father, as such he will paint a warding sign with ash-based paints onto his face when embarking on more dangerous journeys. In a way, it represents a prayer for safe passage.
7. Ancestral Schism — Sometimes difficult choices arise, whether in daily life, trade negotiations, or tribal affairs, and if called upon to make a significant contribution to the outcome of a situation Bogen may end up feeling severely conflicted and would indicate his indecisive deliberation by painting his face in this way.
8. Heartblood of the Tribe — There is something to be said for pride in one’s tribe and people, and while Bogen is not one to brag, he most certainly does feel patriotism and pride in his adoptive tribe, but above that he is also very proud to be Xaela, and he will wear this face paint often during his travels and when dealing with foreign tradesmen.
9. The Wisewoman’s Touch — When Bogen feels inspired, creative, or accomplished, he will paint this intricate design on his forehead with a small brush, as it is traditionally thought that the mark will bring even more inspiration to its wearer.
10. By Nhaama’s Grace — Each dot symbolises the Dusk Mother’s subtle influence in the lives of the Xaela tribes and holds a blessing of peace and wisdom. When faced with extreme challenges, be they physical or spiritual in nature, Bogen will paint his forehead with these markings in order to immerse himself in a feeling of calm tranquility and to prepare for meditation.
11. A Lover’s Kiss — Those who invite love into their lives are sure to feel the pull of desire and attraction. When Bogen is feeling romantic, or seeks romantic interest and attention he will paint his face in this manner.
12. The Jade Serpent — Bogen will paint this symbol in the colour of jade specifically to reminisce and tell stories around the Tumet tribal heartfire about the past and about his adventures. It is a very sacred symbol, embodying the Tumet reverence of their perception of the mineral’s properties, and is only meant for these special storytelling and ancestral tradition retelling gatherings.
«All information here is purely my own headcanon and is in no way meant to dictate other people’s roleplay styles, stories, and/or characters. If you would like to use my concept of Hotgo face paint for your own character(s) I’m really flattered and have no problems with that, but please credit me as the source, thank you!»

Character Biography
Names: Bogen Hotgo, Bogen Tumet [BO-GEN TOO-MET].
Nicknames: Bobo.
Meaning: Material happiness and enjoyment [Hotgo dialect].
Age: 34.
Physical Description: Bogen is quite on the taller scale for an Au Ra male, with an athletic and medium muscular build. His skin pigmentation is a dusky purple tone. Bogen’s face is often painted with symbolic ritual paints that are meant to convey his emotions or to commemorate special events, he also frequently dyes his hair in various bright colours, leaving the original shade of his hair quite the mystery. An injury incurred during the ceremony of his adoption into the Tumet tribe has affected his left eye and caused it to lose the glow of its limbal ring, the iris itself has faded to a milky white, but his vision remains relatively fair.
Occupation: Merchant, fencer, archer.
Favourite Foods: Baklava, Doman Tea, Steppe Tea, Airag, Shorlog, Tsagaalga, Nomad Pie.
Likes: Rainy weather, sweet eats, meaty meals, traveling to new destinations he has never seen before, spending time with his beloved, meditating and reflecting quietly over past experiences while partaking of a cup of airag or a pot of tea, flirting, mingling with the different peoples across Eorzea and The Far East, putting together vibrant dyes and inks, personally sourcing pigments and raw materials used in various handicrafts, painting his face, spending time reminiscing with Xaela of the same age, the sound of Sokhatai’s laughter, being surrounded by the antics of children.
Dislikes: Discord among tribe members, constant and intense dry hot weather, the sound of children crying, late goods shipments, difficult customers, the Dotharl tribe, the Tumet tree-binding ritual, most foods prepared with fish, bullying (teasing is fine, he teases people himself, but there’s a line), insults hurled at his wife or any member of his tribe, witnessing abuse.
Personality: The term gentle giant might be a fitting moniker for Bogen, given that it takes quite a lot to rouse him to any sort of physical expression of his irritation or anger. Because of his Hotgo heritage, he used to have very little need to express himself verbally, as a Hotgo he would have simply painted his face to show his emotions. However, with his travels and exposure to other cultures, Bogen has begun to express himself much more than he once did and now speaks as colourfully as he paints his face.
He is far from being a pacifist, however, and when roused to take up arms he will do so without hesitation and with great honour for the hunt or for the glory of his adoptive tribe, the Tumets.
Sexuality: Pansexual.
Relationships: Married to Sokhatai Tumet, father figure of sorts to Dorbentei “Ochigin” Tumet, mentor and benefactor to Vinea Mercer.
History: He was born into the Hotgo tribe to a generations-long line of dye and ink craftsmen and traders. He learned the craft from his father, and developed an unquenchable sense of wanderlust when he made his first official trade visit with his father at Reunion upon turning twelve. Ever since the brief exposure Bogen experienced at the small-scale Reunion markets, he became infatuated with the wealth of cultures outside of his tribe’s influence, and was obsessed with the thought of one day visiting all the lands spoken about at the Reunion market stalls.
Six years later, and with the blessings of his family and his tribe, Bogen embarked on his first journey, crossing the Azim Steppe into southern Yanxia and across the Ruby Sea to reach Kugane. It was an experience that would solidify Bogen’s desire to travel further than any other Xaela had ever travelled before, and the first of many yearly excursions he would make thereafter.
It was during one such excursion that the massacring of the Hotgo tribe at the hands of the Dotharl tribe occurred, an event that saw to the destruction of Bogen’s family and claimed the lives of his child and husband. News of the Hotgo’s demise eventually reached him while he was on his travels, but by then it was already too late to do much of anything. Because of this, Bogen harbours a deep resentment towards the Dotharl, but his usual jovial demeanour often belies the hatred he carries in his heart.
He has recently been adopted into the Tumet tribe at his lover Sokhatai’s request, and they have just recently consummated their engagement with a ceremony of Eternal Bonding!

I spent the afternoon on the beach in Shirogane with Sokhatai today, after some hard work in the shop this morning, it really cheered my heart and soul spending time with her. Despite her violent little outbursts, she is truly like a rare Steppe flower in my view. Her spirit and love of life make me want to become a better man.
She really is everything to me.
Well, I had better get back to work now and hide these before she finds them and beats me with my own scrapbook.
